| Discussion Class - Odysseus Ship
Imagine a man who is on a long journey on his ship. Part of his ship breaks so he chucks the bit of broken wood into the sea and replaces it with a new piece of wood. A bit further on, another bit of the ship breaks so once again he takes off the broken piece and replaces it with a new piece of wood. This continues this way until he reaches his destination and by this time every single piece of wood on the ship has been replaced with a new piece of wood.
The question for this discussion is:
Is it still Odysseus' ship? If not, when exactly did it become not his ship because no part of the ship is the one he started out on.
Reflect this to yourself and everyday life.

| Yes the ship is still Odysseus' ship. The ship was built by Odyssues which means that the ship still belongs to him. There is only one problem though, the improved ship isn't the same ship as the one her left on. Odysseus still owns the ship because he built it and payed for the materials. As Odysseus may not have built the ship he set on himself the new ship is more his than the old one. The only thing that is different about the whole journey is that there is a different ship. Yes the ship still belongs to Odysseus making it Odysseus' ship | |

| Pickles said exactly what I was thinking: the thing that make's it Odysseus; ship is the fact that he owns it.
In my opinion, if Odysseus was borrowing Pandora's ship and made all the repairs it wouldn't be pandora's ship anymore. I say this because she owned the physical ship, and all the peices of wood that made it up. If none of her peices are there than it is technically not her ship anymore.

| I feel that it is still Odysseus ship. Though the peices of wood are not the ones that he started with he still brought them. And when buying something you say that its 'yours'. It may not be the orginal ship that he set out with but it is still his ship. For example if all of the clothes in your wardrobe kept getting holes in, ripped or faded and you replaced each of the items in your wardrobe so in the end you did not have any peice of the orginal wardrobe it would still be your wardrobe of clothing. Only with different clothes in it. The same applys for Odysseus ship.
And on this one I don't agree with Katie, if he was borrowing Pandora's ship and then it started to fall to peices and he replaced it all it would still be Pandora's ship. This can be shown again with the clothes, if a friend was borrowing a top and they got a stain on it that wouldn't come of and they replaced it with another top it wouldn't be their top it would be your top because it was yours to start of with.
In my opinion if you buy something weather its a sweet or a car its still your sweet or car even if it gets damaged and you have to replace different parts of it until its got non of the orginal features.

| With what Polly said about the stained shirt. If you decide to buy a new shirt, that is your shirt, not the friend you borrowed the orginals from. You would have to give them the shirt as a gift to make it theirs. And the stained shirt is stil there's as well.
If you bought it, or got it, or received it, it's yours. So Oysseus would have to give the ship to Pandora for it to be hers, because he bought all the peices.

| I agrree with Polly on the fact of Pandoras' ship. The ship would never belong to Odysseus iuf he borrowed it off Pandora, if Odysseus borrowed the shiip from Pandora and broke it he would have to replace it, the replacement would never be his. the replacement would be Pandoras.
The ship would belong to Pandora if Odysseus broke and replaced it. The ship wouldn't ever belong to Odysseus if it was BORROWED the replacement would be borrowed from Pandora until such times as it was given back.

| I believe that it is his because he did after all buy the ship to begin with making it his. Even if he just keep getting rid of the old piece of wood and putting another in his place it is still his ship. He did not take the wood form someone else he bought it and it was his. He then took his piece of wood and fixed his ship. Its all his and he still owns in all no matter how many more repairs he makes on it. | |

| If the ship was replaced bit by bit, then the newer additions soon become part of the ship. A ship is simply a whole made up of many parts. No matter how much is added, unless the whole ship is rebuilt from scratch, it's the same ship. Once a piece is added it becomes part of the ship, and soon ceases to be new. For instance, if he replaced the sails, and then a few weeks later had to replace the stern, by then the sails have become part of the ship and soon the stern will as well.
Take a tv show for instance. I'll use ER as a model. The first few seasons the cast remained the same, but as actors moved on to other projects, or their story lines were ended, new characters appeared on screen. After a few years a "new" doctor/nurse becomes a series regular. If in 10 years no orginal actor is starring in the series does it cease to be ER? No, because the overall whole is in place, the parts themselves are interchangable.
Very few things remain the same. But just because the parts are new doesn't make it less of a ship. Therefore in summary, at no point is the entire ship rebuilt at once thus it cannot be percieved as a serperate vessel. It does not pass ownership simply by being updated.
