Sad Midnight Sun News :(

Okay so i just got a message over on my Facebook to check out stephaniemeyer.com and read the news update.

And i am shocked with what has happened and now the repercussions are hitting the fans directly.

I have a good idea of how the leak happened as there were very few copies of Midnight Sun that left my possession and each was unique. I have no comment beyond that as I believe that there was no malicious intent with the initial distribution.

I did not want my readers to experience Midnight Sun before it was completed, edited and published. I think it is important for everybody to understand that what happened was a huge violation of my rights as an author, not to mention me as a human being. As the author of the Twilight Saga, I control the copyright and it is up to the owner of the copyright to decide when the books should be made public; this is the same for musicians and filmmakers. Just because someone buys a book or movie or song, or gets a download off the Internet, doesn't mean that they own the right to reproduce and distribute it. Unfortunately, with the Internet, it is easy for people to obtain and share items that do not legally belong to them. No matter how this is done, it is still dishonest. This has been a very upsetting experience for me, but I hope it will at least leave my fans with a better understanding of copyright and the importance of artistic control.

So where does this leave Midnight Sun? My first feeling was that there was no way to continue. Writing isn't like math; in math, two plus two always equals four no matter what your mood is like. With writing, the way you feel changes everything. If I tried to write Midnight Sun now, in my current frame of mind, James would probably win and all the Cullens would die, which wouldn't dovetail too well with the original story. In any case, I feel too sad about what has happened to continue working on Midnight Sun, and so it is on hold indefinitely.

I'd rather my fans not read this version of Midnight Sun. It was only an incomplete draft; the writing is messy and flawed and full of mistakes. But how do I comment on this violation without driving more people to look for the illegal posting? It has taken me a while to decide how and if I could respond. But to end the confusion, I've decided to make the draft available here (at the end of this message on the Midnight Sun page). This way, my readers don't have to feel they have to make a sacrifice to stay honest. I hope this fragment gives you further insight into Edward's head and adds a new dimension to the Twilight story. That's what inspired me to write it in the first place.

I do want to take a moment and thank the wonderful fans who have been so supportive of me over the past three years. I cannot begin to tell you how much each of you means to me. I only hope this note will stop all the confusion and online speculation so that the Twilight universe can once again become the happy escape it used to be. After this incredibly busy year, I am now focusing on spending more time with my family and working on some other writing projects.

I'm pretty angry that someone who Stephanie trusted could do such a thing as leak her manuscript on the net, i mean yes i know it does happen but surely this person should have known how horrid and violated a person would feel and now Midnight Sun is on hold indefinitely.

I know i'm no stephanie meyer or JK Rowling but as a writer myself i can fully understand where she is coming from. Yes i am upset that we will not get Midnight Sun any time soon, but i agree with Stephanie's reasons, she put her whole soul into the Twilight series and she had to give in to her mind demanding to write Edward's point of view and started Midnight Sun, she wanted to give us Midnight Sun, she wanted her fans to see the side to Edward she saw, she dreamt about but now someone has betrayed her and let us all down by doing this. Im unsure if i want to read the partial draft, i feel like i'm ading to the violation if i do read it.

this sucks... why. I hope that person gets an earful and Stephenie never trusts them again. Because of their stupidity, we all suffer and it sucks.

Wait, does she mean the one that could also be found on the Twilight lexicon, or something? I mean, if she does mean that one, then I'M SCREWED, because I read it, and I thought Stephenie had given her approval to put it there, so that fans could get a small look-see at it - I know it was an unfinished piece and all, but it was still great and--

*gave in to temptation and started reading it last night* i love Midnight sun even from the 1st chapter she gave us, and the more i read the more i love i just feel horrid that we get her permission to read 12 chapters of her draft because someone acted like an arse.

Well, I really can't remember where I found it, but it was some official looking site... :D Probably her website xD

Anyway, I've only read the first chapter, or a bit of it, atleast... :/

I don't think I want to read it... she said she dosn't want us to. I will stay off her website untill the temptation is gone. haha.

I got a text message at about midnight last night from one of my friends who was absolutely distraught over the news, and now I'm just plain depressed. I can't believe that someone would do that (actually I can, but I'd rather ignore the fact) but I still hope Stephanie Meyer publishes the book and the idiot who posted the manuscript pays for it with guilt and much much more. I can't imagine what will happen to them once the fans find out who it is...

I dont think the fans will find out who it is... Stephenie knows, and chose not to say. and she says, and I quote, "I do not believe there was any malacious intent" so I dont think they will get yelled at too much... just lose her trust forever.

yeah, i dont think we will ever find out who exactly leaked the chapters, but to be honest, i dont think i want to know. it would just be somebody to point the finger at and that information would just start a whole new wave of bitterness and anger within the fandom.

I actually had read the leak though, but i thought it was a fake. because i found it on this website that completely bashed SM and her books. I feel really bad now that ive found out its real, and if i had the choice of having these 12 chapters now and SM publishing a full MS in a few years, i would definitely take the full midnight sun in years.

okay. first off, shes not even writing a new story. Its just Edwards pov on a story that already happened. Theres nothing new in the book; her feelings cant change what actally happened. So the whole 'james would win and the cullens would die' is bs. I understand her not wanting to continue at the moment since it is hard to write when your too sad like that, but really. I just want to scream at her to get over herself. If she really did give out that many drafts to that many people, she was just asking for this to get leaked. Either she is just really naive or just really stupid. either way, i dont really have much sympathy for her.

when did she get a copyright on midnight sun? did i miss this? I know its still her book and its still wrong for anybody to leak her book on the internet....but if shes going to be all technical with her 'its a violation of my copyright' im going to be all technical back with 'your still writing it. you dont have a copyright on it yet.' I thought she only had the official copyright thing whatever for the first four books.

True - in a way, Midnight Sun doesn't give us anything we didn't already know, or couldn't have figured out on ourselves from Twilight. It's Edward point of view on things, "that's all" xD

But I still think it was pretty low of this person to do this... hmm, huge temptation to read more, though. How many chapters leaked? :/

12 chapters leaked and were put on her website.

Ah, well now I don't feel as bad as before... I mean, I only read the first one - or a part of it xD And I thought it was wonderful, so... mwehh :D

well i read the 12 chapters that she put up, and i felt awfully guilty whilst doing so but i couldn't stop myself, i found it to be so much enjoyable reading them all from Edwards point of view and Shausto-la we do learn something new.

In chapter 2 Edward is in Denali, we learn a bit more bout Tanya and her sisters, and well her and Edward.

We see the things that Edward kept from Bella, its so much better seeing it through his eyes now that i wish she would write all the other books from his p.o.

And one more thing GOD BLESS ALICE! I love her even more after those 12 Chapters. And Rosalie's reactions etc is understandable now i guess.

I'm even more desperate for Midnight Sun to be released now.

Okay, I read ALL the 12 chapters now xD And I have to admit, Etta, that it DID actually give us some new information - just the fact how Edward thinks is... ABSURD xD I mean, we know Bella's story, but Edward's just... just... BETTER :D

...grr, I can't believe it ended like that - I was so addicted! I WANT MOOOOOORE xD

I KNOW! I was hooked after the first chapter, and now we must pay the price for someone breaking SM's trust.
