Namaste (Nuh-muh-stay) is a form of greeting recognised nearly everywhere in India.

Mera naam....hai. (May-rah Naam (insert name) Hay) My name is...

Kaise Ho? (Kay-say Ho) How are you?

Mein Theek Hoon. (May Theek(tongue on palate when saying th) hoo) I am fine.

So...

Namaste! Mera naam WL hai! Kaise Ho? Mein Theek hoon!

Aur Aap? (or aap) And you?

Han Ji! Mein bhi theek hoon. Aap kitne saal ke hai?

Translation: Yes. I am also fine. How old are you?

Vocab:

Han Ji, Ji (Huh-n Jee)(Jee) - Yes.

bhi (bhee) - also

kitne (ki-tnay) - how many

saal (saal) - year

ke, ki, ka (kay, kee, kaa) - of ......ke=masc/fem polite plu/sing. ki=fem sing. ka=masc sing

We will continue looking at how to introduce yourselves in this thread...Hindi is not my mother tongue, but it is the national language of India so it is spoken everywhere...that's why I know it.

If you want to know how to say anything, want any vocab, etc, just ask, and I will do my best to give you a simple way of saying it.

I will also maybe give you some Marathi alternatives every now and then. Marathi is most similar to Hindi and is spoken in Maharashtra, the state where Bombay is, if you ever want to visit.

Also, pronunciation is going to be very hard....as you can see from my endeavours in brackets! Order and I seem to be the current resident Indians, though Stealth also speaks Hindi. Ask anyone for help if you need it!

If you want to practise what you have learnt, maybe I can open another thread...if everyone practises here, you wouldn't be able to sift through to the lessons...lol!

(Hey Neville! Sorry...I just came and saw the posts just now...and Hindi isn't my mother tongue, it's marathi, but I know enough Hindi to at least understand Bollywood!)

Main Mauritius mein rehta houn, aur yahan, loogg hindi bloté ho to mein bhi ^^( I live in Mauritius and here people speak lot Hindi, and me also)
