Short Harry Potter Prequel Written

A few months ago a number of authors were invited to handwrite cards for auction by Waterstones, on June 10, all proceeds to go to English PEN, the writers' association, and the Dyslexia Society.

After playing around with a number of different ideas I decided to write a short (for me!) excerpt from a prequel to the Potter series. It is about 800 words long and the action takes place around 3 years before Harry is born.

Although I did feel a bit like a relapsing addict as I sat down to write - the words poured from my pen with frightening ease - I am NOT working on a prequel. Indeed, I've written that clearly at the bottom of the card itself. I just thought that this was the best way to make money for two extremely worthwhile charities.

The good news for Potter fans who will not be able to bid at the auction is that you will be able to read the short story (along with amazing contributions from Doris Lessing, Margaret Atwood, Tom Stoppard, Irvine Welsh, Sebastian Faulks, Axel Scheffler, Lauren Child, Nick Hornby, Neil Gaiman, Lisa Appignanesi, Richard Ford, and Michael Rosen) by purchasing a book of facsimiles, which will be available in August. The proceeds from this book, too, will go to the charities.

I already entered the contest, and I think my story was actually good. which is surprizing for me...

Yes the book will be published but it is very short =[
i think it willbe good even though im not a fan of prequels......
but ofcourse i wouldn't be a HP fan if i didn't read it!

I did read that JKR's "card" will go up on the waterstones website in June, so people who are outside the UK should be able to see it up there.

It's so cool that she wrote a prequel. It's also cool that she wrote it to help these 2 charities. That's sweet. It's not just got help, but also for her fans. I'm not that big on prequels, but I'm definitely going to read it. Thanks for posting this!

Lol it is. I am waiting for someone to type it out for us all so we can all read it easier lol.

I really liked the story! I wish there was more, I just wanted to keep reading. As for the handwriting, I had a problem in the beginning but I could understand it after a while so it wasn't that bad.

I wasn't aware of this book until just now! Holy crap! I hunted it down though, amazon has some! It does cost 40something used and 60something new, but at least it's there. It is totally going on my Christmas list. Here's the link:

I didn't even know about this prequel until now. Unfortunatley, I think it's too expensive to convince my mom to buy for me and I don't have enough money to buy it....

Yeah, I have yet to be able to buy it either. Putting it on my Christmas list did no good.
