| This is a quick assignment to get the potions brewing back in the dungeon.
I want you to choose 10 items that will comprise of your Potions shopping list. Explain what each item is, what potions (they can be existing potions or ones you create, or a mixture of the who) they are for, and where you will go to get them. Some will no doubt be found at the store, but the more exotic ingredients won't be so easy to come by.
This class will be worth up to 100 points - 5 points per ingredient on your list, plus 50 points for your explanations/elaborations/story. However, you will not automatically get 100 points for completing the assignment. As always, hard work will be rewarded. The more detail you add, the more inventive or entertaining assignments will be the ones that will get top marks. Those familiar with my classes will know that I never impose limits on imagination. If you take the time to write it, I will take the time to read it. Do NOT copy other students' work, and cite all sources used! Remember to pay attention to grammar and spelling as well as originality and presentation - it counts! Let the shopping begin!

| 1. Frog’s tongue- This ingredient is used in many potions but the most commonly used potion is the wart-removal potion. Is it as the name indicates, a frog’s tongue. You might think that you can just go up to any old frog and remove its tongue but that is not the case. You must wait until it is a full moon in the middle of the night while it is raining, sneak up behind the frog and place it to sleep with a sleeping spell. Then you must take the spelling frog and let it soak in warm water for an hour before you kill it. Once the frog is killed you must remove the tongue with knife, you cannot use a Severing Charm. Let the tongue dry for two days and then you can use it without contaminating your potion.
2. Wolf’s Fang- You must wait till the full moon comes and go out into the woods looking for a werewolf. Once you find this werewolf than you must wrestle the beast to the ground and pinning it to the ground you must then pry open its mouth and rip out one of its fangs. If you try to use a spell to hold the creature than you shall destroy the fang’s magical properties making it as useful as a dog’s fang. This fang is used in a few potions that are very difficult to make.
3. Unicorn Hoof- This ingredient is only used in the Speed Potion and any other potion that increases the speed of something, whether it be how fast one is running or by how quickly a potion can heal its patient. Mainly taken from domesticated unicorns, this ingredient is taken from their hooves. All you have to do is wait till the unicorn either dies or if their hooves get too long and remove or cut them down. If they are dead all you have to do is use a Severing Charm to remove it from the unicorn’s foot. If the animal is alive then you must get someone to come and cut their hooves and with the clippings you can use that in a potion.
4. Cat’s Whiskers- Used in the Agility Potion, this increases your reaction time. To obtain this ingredient you must get a wild cat and place it into a box for three days making sure that it is well feed and watered. After these three days you remove it from the box and feed it fish for a whole week letting the cat roam around your house. Then after that week the cat shall become tame for five years and during these five years you can cut of its whiskers without it affecting the cat in anyway and using it in potions. After these five years are over the cat will either die or once again become wild making it untamable and you will no longer be able to obtain any more whiskers from it.
5. Dog’s Fang- The Dog’s Fang is used in the Loyalty Potion which makes the drinker loyal to all whom they meet till the potion’s effects wear off. You must have a tame dog and once it starts to lose its teach and grow in its adult teeth then you can take its baby teeth and use them. Before you just throw them into a potion you must first take these teeth and throw then into a fire that isn’t too hot and let them in there for two weeks. Once these two weeks are over you are to bury them into the ground for one month. After that you dig them up and clean them off. Once they are clean you may use them in any potion that calls for Dog’s Fang.
6. Skunk’s Tail- Put in the Stinky Foe Potion, this potion causes the drinker to smell like a skunk for three months straight. You must go and find a skunk that was hit and killed by a muggle car on the highway. Making sure that the tail is still intact, you must then pick it up with a muggle’s shovel. Then you must remove the tail from the rest of the animal and place the tail in a washer machine. Turning it on like you would do with muggle clothing, you let the tail wash. Once it is done being cleaned you will then place it into tomato soup for a week and after that week you take it out, clean it and then use it in the potion.
7. Bear Claw- Use in the Strength Potion, the drinker will gain strength and be very strong. First you must find a herd of bears and following them around for a week casting the shield charm around the bear that you picked. After following them for awhile you must then sneak up on the bear while it is sleeping. Once the bear is fast asleep use the Severing Charm to remove the claw. Once you have the claw quickly run away from the bear to a safe distance and then you may make the potion.
8. Eagle Feathers- This ingredient is used only in potions that deal with flight. You must go and find any kind of eagle that you want to use and find it’s nest. Once you find its nest then search it for any lose feathers. You cannot just pull feathers out of the creatures as they will not work in the potion. You must make sure that they have fallen out and lain in the nest for a few days. Once you have gathered your feather than you can use that.
9. Parrot’s Beak- Used in the Talking Potion that is used to make the drinker start to talk continuously until it wears off. You must get a parrot that can speak and once it dies you must remember the last word that it said. You must then take the beak off of the bird and using your wand point it at the beak saying whatever was the last thing your bird said. The beak will glow and then turn purple and it is ready for use.
10. Bat Fang’s- This ingredient is commonly used in the Vampire Potion which once made it will lure vampires. All you have to do it find a baby bat and pull out one of its fangs. Before you pull out the fang you must point your wand at the bat and said “Vampious Cullenous” and then you take the fang from the bat. After you take the fang a new fang will grow in its place. Once you have the fang drench it in pig’s blood and let the blood dry on it. A week later the fang should of absorbed all of the blood and it is ready to be used

1. Lethe River Water This is water from the River Lethe and it is used in the Forgetfulness Potion that has the effect of memory loss. You must collect the water from the river just before dawn and then after that you must leave the water to purify in a cool, dark place. After a couple of months in solitary confinment you will find that the water has a slight blueish tinge to it. This means that it is ready to be used in your potion.
2. Bat Spleens It is a popular ingredient most commonly used in Flying Potions or Transformation Potions. For some unknown reason the spleen of a bat has magical properties that enable the drinker to take the form of a bat for a short period of time. The only problem of this is the drinker might forget where he/she is going because they would also obtain the brain of a bat. These are very easy to obtain and they require little skill or magic. You only have to venture down into a deep cave where many bats dwell and simple catch some with your bare hands. Then you must put a sleeping spell on the bats whilst you pull out their spleens.
3. Phoenix Feather Phoenix Feathers are not only used in the making of wands but also in potions. One feather is usually all it takes to create a very powerful Burning Potion. All you need to do with that potion is put some drops of it on the thing you want to be burnt and quickly run away. Burning Potions are usually not very popular though because the witch or wizard could just use incednio and because it is very difficult to get close enough to a phoenix to get its tail feather (and pointless as said before, you could just use the Fire-Making Spell).
4. Porcupine Quills Porcupine Quills are also a very easy ingredient to obtain and they are very useful because they can be used to cure boils. But there is a correct and incorrect way of getting the Porcupine Quills. Its easy to get the quills and you could do this anyway you want to but the preporation of them is whats important. If they are not given enough time to soften in a damp place then the potions could literally explode and melt away your cauldron. You can tell if the quills are ready because they will go from a black colour to a white or grey colour (may vary between the two). Never get the quills from an Albino Porcupine as its extremely difficult to tell whether it is soft enough or not.
5. Bezoar This is a stone obtained from the stomach of a goat. When it is used in a potion correctly it can protect you from most poisons out there. But this ingredient is hard to prepare. Once you have killed the goat (it must die without feeling any pain) you must skin it, cut off the horns (they can be used for another potion) and slit open the stomach. All of this must be done without any magic and just with a knife. When you find the Bezoar you must not touch it with your bare hands. Instead you must sweep it into a goatskin bag and keep it shut until it is ready to be put into a potion.
6. Goat Horn A Goat Horn is used in the same way as a Unicorn Horn but it is less powerful (although much easier to obtain and prepare). The Goat Horn is used in the Strengthening Potion that is most commonly used by Healers. To get the Goat Horn you must first catch a goat, then skin the goat and cut off the horns. No other preporation is needed except that you must carry out those tasks without the aid of magic or a wand.
7. Broomstick Straw A single straw from a broomstick can help to create a Flying Potion. It is extremely easy to get one (just buy a broomstick or use your own) but the preporation of it is tricky. You must use a muggle kitchen knife to cut off the straw. After doing this you must keep every straw sperate (if preparing mulitple ones) in a place where diamonds are held (it is recommended to put a diamond and a Broomstick Straw in a vault in Gringotts) and you must keep it there for three years. If it goes even a day over three years then the potion will not work.
8. Horned Slugs These are used in a potion that will cure boils. Upon capturing several horned slugs you must keep them in a jar which has rat's blood in it. There is no actual time that you have to keep the slugs in there for but when in the rats blood you can use them at anytime as they remain fresh for many years (they have even been known the keep for centuries).
9. Spines of Lionfish These spines are crushed and then used in healing potions. Lionfish are very easy to find and you can catch them without the need of too much magic. When you have caught a Lionfish you mush pull out 12 spines that are exactly 12 inches in length. When you have done this you have to get them dry as fast as possible (you can do this by using magic). You can tell if the spines are dry or not because they will go from a red and white striped colour to something that strongly resembles a bone. After doing this they are ready to be used in a Healing Potion (about 3 spines would be enough).
10. Eye of a Golden Pheasant The Golden Pheasant's eye is most commonly used in Colour-Change Potions. When you get the eye by killing a Golden Pheasant in a Solar Eclipse you need to squeeze it dry and then make a hole through the iris so that where the pupil should be there is a hole. After you do this then you can just drop it into your cauldron. Do not use the eye if it is brown because this will make the cauldron explode and splash you with burning hot potion.

| Belladonna: A poisonous plant with a purple shade, Belladonna is filled with tropane alkaloids and will be found at any Hogwarts students potions making kit. Other names it goes by is Deadly Nightshade and Witches Berry and was thought in the medieval times to be a plant of the devil. It is a common ingredient in history and present day for medicine, cosmetics, and poison. You can find it in shady, moist areas in North America. Just please don't confuse them with blueberries.
Blood: Blood can be found in any living mammal and certain magical creatures and carries oxygen throughout the body. Blood from certain creatures have certain effects. Blood of a Unicorn can help keep people alive when they are an inch from death. The Dark Lord consumed Unicorn blood in the Forbidden Forest outside of Hogwarts before he came back to power. Although drinking Unicorn blood has very negative effects on your soul...and who would want to harm such an innocent creature as a unicorn anyways?
Wormwood: Wormwood (also known as Artemisia) has many uses for it and is another common ingredient you can find in nature as well as in any Hogwarts students potions making kits. Muggles use it often in a drink that causes a hallucinogenic state and is used by some religions to enhance a psychic ability. It is native to the middle east.
Octopus Powder: Octopus powder is a potion ingredient made from the dried flesh of an octopus. You can probably find it at various apothecary stores and maybe a sketchy seller on ebay. Some would say the excitement of this potion ingredient is in the chase of the octopus itself. When caught you then air it out to dry for 2 weeks followed by cooking it for 14 hours at 250 degrees F. Once fully dried out you may crush it however you like, although I advice not to use a food processor unless you plan on ruining it. Octopus powder is used in many potions having to deal with getting out of sticky situations and it makes a great base for quill ink.
Nux Myristica: Nux Myristica is a common ingredient for any potion master and master chef. Nux means walnut and Myristica is Latin for a nutmeg tree. So it is a fancy way of saying..nutmeg. You can buy it at any grocery store or make it yourself to save the money. It has a long history of therapeutic uses in potions and is great in a pie or on top of buttered toast.
Lovage: Lovage is a plant much like celery and is used in many medicinal antidotes and potions mainly to aid digestion. The fruit and seeds of Lovage can also be used in cooking tings like soup and for tossing in salads and is native to Europe and southwest Asia.
Dragon Claw: Dragon claw is ground up and used as a brain simulator. Many students in Hogwarts used it to pass their OWLS and was confiscated by Hermoine during her reign as Prefect. It is a very difficult ingredient to get a hold of which has resulted in dragon trainers smuggling the shavings and trimmings of the dragons claws after their weekly manicures.
Bezoar: Bezoar is a stone like substance that is found in every Hogwarts students potion making kit. It is taken from the stomach of a goat and can be done by many ways. The job to search their goat bowel movements and vomit is paid heavily due to the disgusting task. It serves as antidotes to most poisons by shoving it down the persons throat. This probably works only due to the person getting sick and removing all of the poison from their stomach but studies have not proven the theory.
Mandrake: Most likely named after their appearance as a human being Mandrakes are apart of the nightshade family. Fully grown mandrakes screams can kill a person while a young one will only knock a person out. Even though growing them is a dangerous and annoying process, the mandrake has medicinal properties and can be used as a sedative, painkiller, and even aphrodisiac but an overdose can be fatal. Mandrakes are center of many Muggle superstitions due to their human like appearance and have been used in religious practices and referenced in the Bible.
Mercury and Mars: Mercury is a poisonous liquid while Mars references to Iron. Poisonous in various doses mercury can be found throughout the world. Many people have issues with the amount of mercury in some fish, for example and it has been the cause of controversy. For this reason Mercury and Mars were one of the many potion ingredients locked up in Hogwarts so that students only had access through supervision of a teacher.
