| BATTLE ONE: Buffy the Vampire Slayer vs. Twilight Welcome to the first Fandom Battle of Fandom Month. This is the thread for the BtVS vs. Twilight debate. Both of these are about vampires, but which one do you prefer? Is Spike hotter than Edward or is Oz a better werewolf than Jacob will ever be? Come up with arguments and points about why one is better than the other, remembering to back your arguments up with quotes, references, pictures etc. However - remember to always be polite and considerate of others views! This isn't a place to bash one or the other, but to have a proper debate. Only post in this thread if you have been assigned to one of the groups below. You may notice that some people have been assigned to more than one battle - however, they will still only end up with one score as it will be averaged. Remember to state which side you are arguing for at the top of each post. Good Luck! | [Twilight] Now I have seen episodes of BtVS, but I stopped watching them. Do you want to know why? The series dragged and got predictable and boring. Like so many other TV shows, BtVS just kept going and going. You could never tell if the end was near. There is such a thing as 'too much'. Twilight is an interesting, compelling story that has a visible end. Stephenie Meyer is an amazing writer who describes everything perfectly, but stills leaves some to your imagination. Why on earth would you pick BtVS over Twilight? | |

| (TWILIGHT)
I have never bothered to watch an episode of BtVS - want to know why? It just didn't seem like a series I wanted to get into, or even could get hooked on. With Twilight, however, seeing the front and back covers at Barnes & Noble had me bringing it to the check out. For the sake of comparing, I found a trailer for an episode of BtVS along with the back covers of the Twilight books. Let's have a look.

About three things I was absolutely positive.
First, Edward was a vampire.
Second, there was a part of him - and I didn't know how dominant that part might be - that thirsted for my blood.
And third, I was unconditionally and irrevocably in love with him. - Quote :
- New Moon
I knew that we were both in mortal danger. Still, in that instant, I felt well. Whole. I could feel my heart racing in my chest, the blood pulsing hot and fast through my veins again. My lungs filled deep with the sweet scent that came off his skin. It was like there had never been any hole in my chest. I was perfect - not healed, but as if there had never been a wound in the first place. - Quote :
- Eclipse
In the dead silence, all the details suddenly fell into place for me with a burst of intuition.
Something Edward didn't want me to know. Something that Jacob wouldn't have kept from me. Something that had the Cullens and the wolves both in the woods, moving in hazardous proximity to each other....
Something I'd been waiting for anyway. Something I knew would happen again, as much as I might wish it never would.
It was never going to end, was it? For me, at least, the Buffy trailer looks only okay. Drama, killing, etc., but nothing really calling out to me. But just reading the back covers of the books makes me want to read them!

| Before I start this off, I'd like to say that first and foremost I love Twilight to death and although it pains me to have to do this I do have to do my job as the Buffy team. Hopefully, somewhere I know Edward will forgive me...lol
*ahem*
Although Emmalynn and Elana made some excellent points I do have to point out a few details. As Emmalynn said "The series dragged and got predictable and boring. Like so many other TV shows, BtVS just kept going and going. You could never tell if the end was near. There is such a thing as 'too much'." That may be partially correct, but the reason for this is right there. Buffy was a TV show. Each episode was an hour that had to have a plot, climax, and many times conclusion right in that one hour. Some can even say that each episode could be it's own book with all the action that goes on in it. There were 7 seasons, 144 episodes total of the show. When you compare that to Twilight, which was a mere 4 books, although talented and good, still 4. Who's to say that if the Twilight series was dragged on to equal the amount that Buffy was that it won't also be "too much"? For that matter, this is what TV series are all about. You can never "know when the ending is near". You never know how long TV shows will last until you're told. Or books for that matter. If Stephanie Meyer didn't state that the fourth book was the last book, then we'd never know the ending was near. They continue the show until it starts losing it's viewers. If it stopped at it's best, then the fans would get angry. I know I did when several of my shows were threatened to stop airing. And considering that Buffy lasted as long as it did, I think we can agree that it was a great series. It's not easy to have a new story to air every week rather than books that come out once every year (if we're lucky). Although, I'd like to add that according to EW, the star of Buffy, Sarah Michelle Gellar decided not to continue a Season 8 which was why the show ended, not because it didn't have enough viewers.
As for Elana's arguement, it's more of a difference in opinion as I had the opposite reaction at first. I considered the Twilight summary to be merely okay. It didn't do the books justice of course. It was actually because of Twilight's back cover that I did not read the book at once. (Once again I'm very sorry Edward lol) However, I wasn't the only one as when I referred Twilight to serveral of my cousins and friends, I actually told them to ignore the back cover as they thought it was as odd as I did before I read it. It may be a difference in generation and when I read the back I thought 'Hmm, okay so she's human in love with a vampire that loves her but could potentionally kill her. Now why does that sound so familar?' Because add in the vampire slayer plot and it would be quite similar to Buffy which was written over a decade ago. I'm not saying that the storylines are the same, but the summary at first seemed like it to me. Except now I know that Bella would never ever be able to fight vampire unless she accidentally tripped on a knife that beheaded it. lol You can't judge such a large show on one or two episodes promos. Out of the 144 episodes, there bound to be a few that's not as great as others. Or like Twilight, you can never judge a book by it's cover.
In my opinion, one major difference in Twilight and Buffy is that Buffy has much more decisions and struggle than Bella does. She has alot more problems in her life. Like Bella, Buffy moves to a new school and has to deal with high school. Yet unlike Bella, Buffy has a destiny that she has to juggle with her life. She's the "Chosen One" to be the vampire slayer. She deals with the supernatural dangers that Bella has every day except Buffy doesn't have any protectors. She has to save herself. Add in the vampire boyfriend who she loves yet cannot kill because of that love and you've got Buffy Summer's life. The plot is just more intense than Twilight.
According to an article on wikipedia: - Quote :
- Reviews for the show were positive,[4] and it was ranked #41 on the list of TV Guide's 50 Greatest TV Shows of All Time as well as #2 on Empire's 50 Greatest TV Shows of All Time. Buffy was also voted #3 in TV Guide's Top 25 Cult TV Shows of All Time and included in TIME Magazine's 100 Best TV Shows of All Time.[5] It was nominated for Emmy and Golden Globe awards.
TV Guide and TIME would be most accurate and notice that each list if Best/Greatest TV Show of All Time. That's a mighty impressive honor. Not to mention that it not only was nominated for the Emmy but also won the award. In addition, from this series sprung movies, novels, video games, comics, and spin off with Angel.
