300m HURDLES

Welcome to the 300m hurdles Please read instructions carefully before you begin

INSTRUCTIONS

The 300m hurdles is a very fast race in which each participant must finish to be awarded points.
Participants must do the following;

1. RUN - Submit a 200 word double drabble starting with the words 'If flying hippos lived in trees...'
2. JUMP - Submit a banner showing 'snape is good'
3. RUN - Submit a 5 line poem which rhymes on the lines: ababc
4.
JUMP - Submit a dollz with their style based upon the olympics
5. RUN - Submit a final 500-300 word debate argument upon why you believe that purple hippos exist!

Points Possible can be found within the points post.

Each part 1-5 MUST be posted in order AND in a different post. Double posting is allowed!

You
must complete all 5 parts to finish the race otherwise you will only

“If flying hippos lived in trees, there’d be fun for you and me!”

He snorts at the inane jingle, then winces in pain. For a moment, he’s forgotten his injuries. He touches his fingers to his lips, the corners of his bruised mouth quirking up into a smile.

Her kiss. No forgetting that.

He turns the television off, plunging the crypt into darkness, and settles back into the chair with a groan. He can feel the blood working already, knitting bones back together, mending broken skin, dulling the bruises.

He knows the injuries will heal quickly, leaving only a few faint scars to add to the collection. And the scars too will fade, in time.

He puts his hand to his lips. It is an unconscious movement, absent-minded.

It hadn’t been a crumb. Heck, it hadn’t even been half a crumb.

But it had been real.

When the scars disappear, when the bitch who put them there is long gone, he knows that the memory of that moment will remain, and he will treasure it.

He knows the kiss was given in thanks, and it has provided fuel for a thousand fantasies.

But the look in her eyes as she’d pulled away?

That has given him hope.

“If flying hippos lived in trees, what a site that would be.” He father said. Luna felt a smile embrace her face and her smile widen. She thought about it day after day, night after night. Why IF they lived in trees? Heck, what if they could fly? Luna would stay in her daydreams, watching the hippos in her mind. Some would smile and wave at her, inviting her to their party, while others slept in the lush green leaves.

She glanced at her father. “Father? Have you ever seen a flying hippo in trees?” She asked in her dream like voice. He took a sip of his water he had raised at his lips and made an ‘ah’ noise. “Once.” He replied. Her eyes shined with hope, happiness, and jealously. She wanted to see one and it wasn’t fair her father did. He noticed it and laughed. “I’ll show you one day, but today, we hunt the nargles again.” He said with a nod.
She rushed from the table, grabbing her net from the hook on the door. “Nargles await!” She yelled, happiness plastered on her face. She could wait to see the hippos, she wanted a nargle first.

Jude frowned. Mrs. Frame had told them to write silly poems. Jude did not do silly. Flying hippos weren’t going to get her into Yale. She glanced over to where the previous class’s poems hung. Her arch rival’s poem hung in the coveted center spot.

I trip trop over fluffy fleas
Stopping to smell the bees knees
Blueberries try to sweet talk me
And fluttering acorns applaud and agree
But with a sniff and a howl
I blow away their dandelion yowl’s
And continue to trip trop without thee

Jude snorted. The rest of the class looked over, and she feigned a sneezing fit. Of course Winston would come up with that nauseating tripe. Jude mentally rolled her eyes. If that pile of bone and nerd could do it…

If flying hippos lived in trees
Allowed to bend branch and bud
If gilled cows ruled the seas
Allowed to chew seaweed cud
Perhaps then a wish granted to me
Would be to see thine enemy made dud
And laugh with the hippos in the trees

If Flying Hippos lived in Trees, and purple monkeys danced on spotted knees
What would the world be like?

Would the sky be green, and the grass be blue, perhaps a flying
hippogriff or two
Perhaps in schools, where teachers stand, would be two cheaters hand in hand
Teaching the class their ABC’s, counting on their heads the 1,2,3’s
And what about the adults with all their careers, would you see an elephant with huge ears?
Perhaps a train driver would be of norm, yet perhaps it may be a swarm
Of multicolour wasps and bees, who chant not zees yet shout out

Would the world make sense to you, if you saw a zebra
crossing the road, or maybe even two?

Can one day the world be over run?
Will the animals one day dance in the sun?

The above quote comes from The Deathly Hallows, the last book in the Harry Potter series by J.K. Rowling. It is now apparent that the legend of the purple hippo exists outside our beloved HE site. Doubt what you will, but purple hippos run rampant around here, my friend.

To even have to debate their existence shows how close minded muggles, er, humans can be. It is true they are a genetic rarity, but just as there are albino peacocks, there are also purple hippos. Although they sadly do not fly.

Many who argue against the existence of purple hippos are quick to point out that they have never seen one. To that I argue that despite the fact that I have never seen a amoeba or a three legged goat doesn’t mean that I believe any less that they exist. I also point out that I have seen purple hippos with my own two eyes, but I am usually met with jokes hinting that I must have been “drunk as a skunk.” A funny phrase for non-believers to use, because if one were to indeed see a drunken skunk, then they should immediately call PETA, as some muggle has been amusing themselves by getting the poor animal intoxicated.

But I don’t expect you to take just my word that purple hippos exist. I have a letter from HE’s very own resident purple hippo (and if she’s taken the time to write a letter than she most certainly must be busy existing as well).

It has come to my attention that there are those out there who doubt my existence, and that of all purple hippos. I must apologize for this, as we are a rare and exclusive club we have neglected our public relations with humans. We have been so busy focusing on getting our population numbers up, it never occurred to us that one of the reasons we were still endangered was that no one believed in us. Fortunately I found HE and Sharon, who have worked diligently to support our species. Rigby has been kind enough to both take a picture of me and my baby, showing us in all our purple splendor. I regret at this time that I am not able to hold a press conference, but as true believers spread the word or our existence we will eventually come out of the proverbial species closet.

“If flying hippos lived in trees…..” Neville talked out loud well he read. It seemed Muggle Tales of Magical Animals caught his interest. “Why would hippos live in trees? Perhaps it has something to do with camouflage”

“Neville?! What are you reading?” Spoke a tall blonde haired girl smiling sweetly.

Not even glancing up, Neville spoke with his face still buried in the book.“Muggle Tales of Magical Animals. My Grandmother thought it was a good idea to learn about something different for a change. Instead of reading Magnificent Plants of Wonder.” Turning to face the girl, whom didn’t introduce herself, but he knew by the sound of her voice exactly who she was.

“Perhaps you could borrow my Magnificent Plants of Wonder?” Luna smiled

“Really? You wouldn’t mind?” Glancing round Neville’s mind began to grow with hundreds of plants that awaits him within this book. It didn’t take him long to become distracted as Luna disappeared and headed towards her dormitory.

It had been so long since he even seen this book. When he was younger he remembered his Grandmother telling him stories about books his father had. It’s possible that’s how he got his interest in plants.

I believe that purple hippos don’t exist. It a proven fact that hippos aren’t purple or even close to that colour. It seems a few myths float around about them being a really mythical creature, but I on the other hand feel that isn’t the case. We know of animals that have become extinct that resembled something else, and their colour doesn’t change; only their body. Perhaps its possible that they might have existed during the dinosaurs, but there as of days hasn’t been any proof.

One thing I do know that’s true is that Hippos secretes a red substance that helps protect them from the suns rays. It gives them a kind of reddish colour and looks almost as though their skin has become like blood red. Some people say that the hippo’s skin is changing its colour like a chameleon but in fact they are just protecting themselves. Their whole body doesn’t become completely red either. It seems to be mostly positioned around their eyes. Still this doesn’t make them anywhere near being purple or green or orange for that matter. Maybe we should learn to stick to the facts of history instead of trying to say something is evolving when in fact they aren’t.

There was a breed of hippos that went extinct during the last ice age. The most we know about them was that they were known to be called the river horse and were based outside of Africa. The Hippopotamus gorgops was way larger then the hippos we see today. Some say they would help move water and caused lakes to form where there was none. I still feel that this doesn’t seem possible. These hippos would have to enormous to move water and create a new path for a river to form. Perhaps it might have been another creature that the people swore did it, maybe the hands of something more mysterious.

Beth sighed as Abby went to Away. She typed out rhymes, debating how to get this to the guy. E-mail was so impersonal, IMs as well. She continued to write as a plan formed in her mind.

“Letter for you, Mike,” his mother said the next morning.

Surprised, he never got mail – actual, tangible mail – Mike quickly opened the envelope and read words written in a hand he knew so well.

The last lines caught his eye, past the inside jokes, randomness and awkward rhymes.

The hippopotamus. A magical creature, indeed.

Erm- a great animal. Cute, have tusks, funny name.

Unbeknownst to most humans, our past and that of the hippo are intertwined. Since day one, we’ve lived, maybe not side by side, but in the same general area. We used to interact with hippos on a day to day basis, and that’s not the only thing that’s changed. Way back when, all hippos were purple in color.

That’s right, I said it. Purple. P-U-R-P-L-E.

Call me mad, but I’m right.

Now, you might say that this is just absurd. Hippos aren’t purple nowadays, you’ll say. Well, I’ve got some news for you. So what if most hippos you Muggles see aren’t purple! That doesn’t mean they aren’t in our world! I mean…silly fellow humans. You’ll believe in dragons and unicorns, fairies and leprechauns, but not in purple hippos?

Right about the time when we branched off from Mug – I mean…

Meh, anyone who doesn’t believe in magic just plug your ears. Don’t know why any of you came anyway.

All good? Okay. So, as I was saying, when the magic race split off from the Muggles, that’s when the same thing happened to the hippos. The poor dears had all lived as one, but then they had to choose which side to be on. Those who wanted to live in the open or in zoos and amuse the general public changed to have more of a brownish-reddish coloration, while those that preferred our company kept their purpleness. I’m not one to say which made the better decision but looking at Bobbina and baby and the care they’ve been given versus those kept in zoos…

Well, you can see where my vote’s going.

Oh, right. I should probably explain who Bobbina and her baby are.

These two hippos are some of the purple hippos still among us. Mascots of the Hogwarts Experience, these two hippos bring joy to our every day life – just like in ancient times, except they’re more mischief makers than helpers. As you can see, these are real hippos. They aren’t holograms, they haven’t been painted – they’re real! And if this doesn’t prove it to you that purple hippos exist, then I guess you’ll have to come with me. We’ve gathered the whole lot of them to prove their existence, and they’re just dying to meet the nonbelievers.

Captain Jack turned on the TV volume when he caught sight of a most unusual thing.

“Today England saw one of the most if not the stranger of things to ever be caught on tape. No, this is not some new movie to come filled with special effects, this is real folks, this morning flying purple hippos were taped making nests in trees!”

Jack felt the perfume even before the hands closed around his waist behind him. Ianto caressed his lover’s hair with his nose.

“What are you watching?”

Jack took a moment before answering, Ianto was beginning to feel the stiffness, the serious tone in Jack’s voice when he spoke.

“Nothing, it’s just something I used to hear when I was a child. When the time of the ‘If flying Hippos lived in trees comes, burning monkeys will be running wild. Humans will be slaves and aliens will take over the world!’”
Ianto smiled “Please tell me I do not love a child’s stories believer, cuz that’d make you even more cute.”

“No, of course not, it’s just something I used to hear…” Jack didn’t tell Ianto where he had really heard that it was real and the beginning of the end of the world. Instead he just kissed Ianto like it was the last of days.

Why do I know, not believe, that purple Hippos exist? Simple because over 2000 members in this website can’t be wrong and we all know purple Hippos exist even if we don’t like them. I mean we even have a mascot to prove it, Bobbina and her offspring.

Make me believe which can only be done by doing stuff around the site only then you will find the truth and see for yourself purple hippos do exist!

Oh! Hello there, gentle viewers. You caught me catching up on an old favourite. It’s wonderful to get lost in a story, isn’t it? The adventure and heroics and discovery… don’t they just take you away? Hmm.

Come with me now, gentle viewers. Join me on a new voyage of the mind, a little tale I like to call Elfie, Purveyor of the Purple Hippo.

It was cold last night and the wind was cruel, but the Purveyor had a job to do… proving that purple hippos, do in fact, exist.

Unfortunately, purple hippos have a job to do too… they are shy creatures, and wish to remain of myth and legend as they have done for thousands of years.

But alas! Elfie is insistent upon proving their existence…

Elfie skidded to a halt in the cool night air of the desert. There was no noise, no sound except for her quiet breathing as she peered through her binoculars. A dark shape moved across the plain. Could it be? Had she finally found the legendary purple hippo?

There was a loud roar, and the sound of blunt teeth gnashing together. Elfie screamed, then all went black…

Oh dear, my goodness. Things don’t look good for our Purveyor, do they? She didn’t see the beast approach from behind, concealed by the cover of darkness, ready to attack…

Elfie groaned and lifted her head. She found herself staring into the beady black eyes of none other than the famed purple hippo himself.

“Did I hit my head, or are you really real?” she wondered out loud.

“Both, actually,” the hippo replied, though his voice did not permeate the air, resonating in Elfie’s head alone.

“So you do exist, then?” Elfie asked, rubbing a sore spot on her forehead, then leaning forward to tickle the purple hippo’s stomach. Here she was, proving the legend existed – why not break the school motto as well?

“Oh yes,” the hippo replied, “but I refuse to prove that I exist, for proof denies faith and without faith I am nothing.”

The hippo then promptly vanished in a poof of logic.

“Oh dear,” said Elfie. “I’m going to lie down and pretend this never happened.”

So you see, gentle viewer, through this tale of courage and adventure we have learned an important lesson: never tickle a purple hippo in the desert at night whilst under the influence of a nasty head bump.
