POLE VAULT

Welcome to the pole vault event. Please read the instructions carefully

INSTRUCTIONS
Height is the key! And this event, height is classed as post count!

For this event you are required to use this thread as an RPG thread. You must invent a character, one of which you havent used within great hall or any existing character from fiction.

Your first post MUST give 10 lines about your character including name and a little picture. This picture MUST be put on EACH of your posts otherwise they can not be counted.

You may double post after your first information post though you may not double post after that!

Each post MUST have at least 10 lines! Any posts under that will not gain any points.

You will be given points not only on post quality and quantity, but also sotryline and character as well as many other aspects.

Your RPG scenario is: The castle grounds has been turned into an olympic stadium. All events are open and people go from one to another watching or particpating, socialising and partying. Take what you want from this scenario and be creative!

Points Possible can be found within the points post.

Name: Helga Hufflepuff

Helga Hufflepuff used to be the Hufflepuff house mascot before the purple hippo of HE castle took her place, kicking her out into the cold. She was cold and lonely with no money to her name, and with her unusual looks, she could not even get a job.

It was then she saw the advert for the HE olympics. At HE, she knew that everyone was accepted, so she signed up. She began her training - running every morning around the castle grounds, eating healthy food, weight lifting the purple hippo...

Soon it was time for the olympics to begin and Helga was ready. She put on her new yellow team outfit that she had spent the final few coins she had on and walked down the the stadium. Her heart was beating, and as she only had a little hearts as she was only tiny and only three years old, she was worried it would jump right out of her chest, yet she pushed forward head held high

Name: Penny Lane

Penny Lane is a 5th year Ravenclaw student. Despite her wit and intelligence, she always finds her self in second place, especially in a House that is defined by it's wit and intelligence. She's a smart, driven girl in a house full of other smart, driven people. The HE Olympics is her chance to redeem herself.

Growing up as a Muggle, Penny was raised by Moonbeam and Star Dust, her parents embracing the hippie lifestyle long after it had come and gone. She was teased a lot as a child, mostly for her name and her strange parents. Penny got in many fights, until her English teacher (also the school's girl's football coach) turned her aggression towards sports. By the time she was eleven she was playing football, lacrosse, softball and was on the swim team. Her skill on the field and in the classroom won her no friends. Penny Lane was still an outcast.

The letter she received from Hogwarts felt like a ticket to freedom. Suddenly her differences became something to be proud of, and she left for Platform 9 and 3/4's without looking back. Penny, sitting on the stool with the sorting hat on her head, waited while the Hat debated on placing her in Slytherin or Ravenclaw. Having read up on her history of Hogwarts, Penny prayed desperately for Ravenclaw. Her prayers were answered, and into Ravenclaw she was welcomed.

The near Slytherin sort had her shook up, and it was then that Penny Lane realized that she had a deep need for success. Perhaps her parent's laid back, carefree attitude had pushed her to the opposite extreme, perhaps part of her wanted to become a powerful witch so that she could get revenge on all the Muggle children that had spurned her. Whatever the reason, Penny tried hard to be a valuable member of Ravenclaw, and took on more than her fair share of responsibility.

Although smart, Penny studies hard to keep her perfect grades. In order to finally distinguish herself from the many shining stars of her house, Penny is competing in every single Olympic event. Despite the lack of time turners available, she has managed to study and practice every aspect of the upcoming games. As the event begins she is partly filled with nervers, and partly hugely excited.

Helga walked down the path into the stadium. There were already so many people around, getting ready for their events. She loked down to her event sheet and noted the times which each one started. Glancing around nervously, she could not see anyone in the crowd that she knew. Taking a deep breath, she walked to her first event - the 100m sprint.

Helga reached the edge of the field and began to warm up. As she was part way through some leg stretches, she noticed Penny walking towards her. Waving and smiling, she called her name, glad that there was someone that she knew.

"Hi Penny" Helga said smiling as Penny reached her, "Are you in the 100m sprint?"

Helga could not hear her answer as suddenly there was a loud bang and a couple of screams. Helga jumped up and tensed. She could see smoke in the sky with a green skull like mark.

"The dark mark..." she whispered shaking, her eyes not being ble to leave the sky as people hurried around her terrified

Name: Penny Lane

Penny left the Ravenclaw Locker Room and started towards the field where the 100m sprint was being held. She jogged most of the way there, keeping her muscles warm and loose. Penny slowed to a walk once she neared the field. In the distance she could see the former Hufflepuff mascot, Helga, warming up for the sprint. Penny had already identified Helga as one of her toughest competitors. After being pushed aside for the purple hippo, Helga was out to prove herself as much as Penny was.

"Hi Penny. Are you in the 100m sprint?" asked the adorably cute Helga.

Penny couldn't prevent the answering smile that formed on her lips. It was hard not to like Helga, despite the Hufflepuff being a formidable opponent. Penny opened her mouth to respond, when a loud bang cut off her train of thought.

Her wand was out and ready before she was aware of her actions, her body responding to the screams of those around her. Penny glanced around her and saw several people pointing up towards the sky. There, hanging above the HE Olympic stadium like an evil toxic cloud, was a green glowing dark mark. The breath left Penny Lane, and her heart caught in her throat.

Gradually her breath came back to her, and her heart returned to it's normal place, even if it's beating pace was a bit elevated. Anger came rushing through her blood. This was obviously the stunt of someone determined to shake up the athletes. Penny refused to give into either her fear or her anger, knowing that if she lost control the idiot or idiots who had cast the dark mark would be getting exactly what they wanted. Moving out of the pathway of the people who were still running scare, Penny found a bench to sit on. She concentrated on breathing slowly in and out. She forced her mind to focus on the 100m sprint, and not the chaos that surrounded her.

"You are a rock. You are an island." She repeated her mantra, stolen from a Simon and Garfunkel song but nevertheless effective, over and over. Penny did not look up to check to see if the dark mark was diminishing, did not check to see if people were still screaming and running around. She only stole the occasional peek at the field to see if the 100m sprint was starting. Penny didn't want even her meditation getting in the way of the event.

Meet Ira Lilith Smitje, uncommon hybrid of [not only] cultures. With a Dutch mother and an Italian father, she found out early in her life that while birds of a feather may not always flock together, opposites do attract but that doesn't mean they make a good match. And isn't her name kind of telling? Yes, Smitje is kind of an affront to the majority's sensible ears, but we are referring to the 'Ira' bit here. Greek and Latin seem to dispute about her nature, the latter insisting she owns a fair amount of rage while the other claims her to bring peace. Good for her she combines both, as well as two cultures, and several other opposites.

One of the most dominant contrasts is her attitude towards the world: on the one hand, she loves to talk to everyone about just about anything, including but not limited to herself and her personal life; yet she has problems letting people get close to her for she thinks they are to concentrated on themselves to acknowledge the gift of her friendship. Naturally she thinks that others have this valueable gift to give, too, and she is to self-centred, too, so she doesn't really have friends, more acquaintances actually.

Secondly, one needs to talk to her far more than a little to understand and possibly appreciate all of her. She's woven her tight net of both traditions and modern ideas in which she plans her life, and all of it makes her everything: stay-at-home wife, sports professional to a certain extent, the typical girl that's horribly addicted to fashion and beauty, a fun to be around pal for both boys and girls - yet with the multi-faceted nature, people always just see the other parts of her and believe she can't be either of them really if she's something else as well.

As a matter of fact, this is what made Ira come back to her old school, back to Hogwarts Castle, for the HE Olympics once she heard of them. Here she can care for the other participants all she is allowed to and fuss about them, but at the same time show her extraordinary sports personality; she has the chance to hang around and joke with nice people, yet the galas and sports-free times are her perfect chance to show she's got style and elegance. And it all comes down to one thing: she wants people to see that every part of her combined is what makes the real Ira, the nice girl next door that just wants to be liked and never taken for granted...yes, despite everything it's simple as that.

Therefore, in spite of every nervous expectation she's had before the sorting, this girl was immediately placed in Slytherin. Why, you wonder? Surely you've heard the rumour of them snakes just being misunderstood poor souls, and that's oh so true....that and maybe there were these helpful things called ambition, cunning, sarcasm. But hey, don't forget she's just nice and looking for love. So what if she's a little ambivalent [in more than one sense]? Maybe she just doesn't want to make decisions only to find later on she chose the wrong thing. Oh, did I mention her starsign's Gemini? Funny, I know.

Now ultimately for her sports personality, as sports is what this is all about: as said, she's ambitious and thus always willing to win, yet with the target of combining multiple talents, she's likely to join team sports for their work-together nature; she's obsessed with being the best however unwilling to stick to a healthy diet, and she keeps telling herself she's great without it, and far better off than if she won everything but was always miserable and grumpy [for she'd met someone like that around the castle grounds]; and on top of it she's highly attracted to medals though never sure which country to participate for. Antithetic? Oh please, why would you ever think that of dear Ira?

Melvin ‘Mo was what some would call a freak of nature. And, certainly, for him life was different.

He didn’t see things the way other people did. He didn’t look the way other people did. And certainly, many people would argue that he wasn’t a person – he was a thing.

But Melvin, he was born a trooper. He gets through his days and lives like everyone else. So what if he didn’t have ears? So what if he was covered in fur? And so what if he didn’t need eyelids! The people who questioned it just didn’t understand the advantages of no eyebrows. And certainly, the fact that it was hard to distinguish his gender meant little to him. He was unique. He was special. And he knew his worth even if other people didn’t.

Of course there were those days when he just felt like the outsider that he really was. For one, living in black and white was a constant struggle for him. And as a Wizard, it was exceptionally so. He was always at a severe disadvantage because of it (so many times he’d been hit with a Jelly Legs curse, thinking it was a Cheering Charm), and it impaired his learning abilities. But he always pulled through.

Melvin embraced the cliché “life is a challenge”. Every day seemed a struggle when you were two feet tall and your only means of movement was dictated by thin strings attached to your arms and legs. But he dealt with it as he dealt with everything else.

For all that Melvin could overcome his hardships so well, he always felt torn inside. You’d never tell, from the outside, of course – he was very good at that, though the lack of eyebrows and immobile facial features may have had something to do with it – and because of that people eventually became intimidated by him. His lack of response, though he was roaring with pain and torment on the inside made people believe that he was some kind of stone gargoyle, and they avoided him and revered him. He was something of a legend in certain First Year Hufflepuff circles.

It was something Melvin took advantage of. He was a Slytherin – naturally – and knew how to make good a weird situation.

When it comes down to it, Melvin – he’s just one of a kind. And he was ready and willing to prove himself in any way possible.

The Olympics was just the thing he had been waiting for.

Things appeared to have calmed down. There was still speculation over who had set off the dark mark, but HE Olympic officials weren't about to let it get in the way of the opening events. If the person responsible for casting the dark mark had hoped to stop the Olympics they were surely now disappointed. It would take a lot more than an ugly skull and snake in the sky to damper the athletic spirit.

Penny Lane had taken her place on the track. Elfie stood nearby with cap gun, ready to send off the fire to signal that the race could begin. Penny's thoughts were only on the race, only on breaking her own personal best time. She gave not one thought to her competitors, didn't even allow herself to glance their way. She raced best when she raced herself.

The shot fired and they were off!

Penny's long legs were powerful off the blocks, and pounded the track's pavement. Because this was such a short sprint Penny never allowed herself to fall into a steady rhythm. Instead she pushed with each foot, pushing herself faster and faster. Inside her head, Penny counted, sure that this was her fastest 100m ever. She crossed the finish line with one final burst of speed.

She didn't know if she had won, but knew that she had run a great race. Her heart thudded in her chest and in her ears. Penny slowed down to a walk, eventually making her way over to the ice chest. She dug out her canteen of ice water and took a long drink off of it. Finding a shaded area, she sat cross legged, waiting for the scores to be posted.

Maggie Willa Donelly has, so far, danced through her first couple years at Hogwarts School of Witchcraft and Wizardry. A pureblooded Hufflepuff witch, she's found life at Hogwarts fun and exciting - much better than going to a public Muggle school and having to babysit her little brother and sister after school. She's fit well into Hufflepuff, although she's a bit loud, bouncy, and exuberant for the stereotype to fit perfectly. Her bright smile is sure to light up a room, but besides that, she hasn't quite found her thing. You know, her thing. What she'll look back on when she's old and gray and be able to brag about. She's not too great at Potions or Transfiguration, gets decent marks in Charms, despises Herbology...The niche she was hoping to appear hasn't done so yet. But hey, she's still got over four years; she's only thirteen. There's time.

And then, out of the blue, the Olympics came to Hogwarts. Mags knows she doesn't look too athletic - and, to be honest, isn't in the slightest - but not every sport is about endurance and strength. Say, ping pong, for example? This kid was practically born with a table tennis paddle in her hand, and is totally psyched to show it off. Mike, her dad, got into the - er - sport during college, and has loved it ever since. He's taught it religiously to the kids but, somehow, Lori, her mom, escaped the ping pong craze that swept through the rest of the family. And so Maggie has come to the Olympics for a number of reasons.

1. To show that you don't have to look crazy fit to win.
2. To get her house another medal.
3. To show that she can win at something.
