Riddle?

Ok...I know this should be TWO different threads, but it's basically something I gathered from this one book. In the second book, I thought Tom was suppose to be in his 5th year or 6th year and opened the chamber but turned Hagrid in because he feared the school would be closed and he could never come back? In the HBP it said it was his 7th year. Well, if it was his 7th year, why would he close the chamber after killing Myrtle? And speaking of her, I was thinking about the way she died today. She was picked on about her glasses and she ran to the bathroom. I cant remember if they said she didnt have her glasses on or not, but she wouldnt have her glasses as a ghost if she didnt die with them on (Not to sure about that) so would that mean she actually never SAW the balisk(?) or did she have them off and just died that way? I was confused about both of these and wondered if any of you could sorta help.

I always wondered about the glasses. But I mean, I don't think that glasses/glass/perfectly transparent things work as buffers for the Basilisk's deadly gaze: the fact that Hermione uses a mirror rather than easily wearing a pair of sunglasses or putting something clear in front of her suggests this. So I guess that's what JK was going for there (could have been clearer I know)

And uh... I don't know about the other stuff.

Hmm...as for his reasons for closing the Chamber it might've been because he needed to actually control the monster but to do that he'd need to be able to speak Parseltongue which he'd be unable to do from away from Hogwarts so rather risk raising suspicions (somehow?) to him he decides to close it? Not really sure though....

And like Melly was saying, I don't think glasses would stop because that's just something clear and you're still seeing the Basilisk directly, not as a reflection or anything...

Well he can't have the basilisk killing peeps too without him there behind it - or killing purebloods willy nilly. Makes sense to lock a dangerous creature up. Also, it's one of his secret places that no one else can get into - so the monster would be something like a secret weapon for him in times of great need. Don't want anyone discovering what it is and killing it.

And he had discovered Horcruxes by then, so maybe he found something Darker and more fun to do than killing Mudbloods with his snake (haha). Hey do you think that Myrtle was a kill he used for a Horcrux?

But JK said that you had to look DIRECTLY at the eyes of a basilks....sooo glasses would pervent that wouldnt it? It's a thin piece of glass between the eyes and such

Then why was Harry nervous even though he wore glasses?

Hmmm...I mean, I think it's still direct even with glass...though I guess if whatever magical thing kills the person is made by direct eye contact than that would be an issue....-ponders- I'll think about it and come back. xDDD

Oh, and melly, I don't think he would've used any of those killings as Horcrux's...they weren't "important" enough for him....

But Myrtle was his first Mudblood, and he used his basilisk!

To make a horcrux, you have to kill the person and your soul splits and goes into the object you want....you have to do the killing yourself : /

But the snake killed her on his orders? I thought that was the same, but I can see how it's different too...

Yeah, it wouldn't be the same because whenever his death eaters are ordered to kill someone it's not like he himself did it...

and also I doubt he wanted to make a Horcrux out of that kill when he had this diary to pass on so it could be passed on and opened even when he was gone from the school because if it was his last year he'd need someone to take over for him.

Well the whole thing with what year Tom was in I don't know. It could just be a mistake that JK made. She had messed up on dates before.

As for the basilisk, her wearing glasses and seeing the snake is kinda different from a mirror. A mirror is a reflection of the body so you don't really see the object just the reflection as to why it didn't kill Hermione. Now as for glasses, glasses just kinda make it so that when the light hits the back of your eye it goes back far enough so that things are clearer. So she would still see the Basilisk and it would still kill her. That's my thoughts

That'd be awesome if you could escape death by basilisk if you had bad eyesight. Mind you, it could still eat you.
