| I've decided to start something new, just to make things different. Each week, or about every week, I will post a muggle object of the week. It won't be anything hard and will be worth 50 points. Please site all sources.
Muggle Object of the Week: A clock Part One:
1. What is a clock? (2) 2. What was used for a clock at first? (2) 3. How does a clock help a muggle? (2) 4. Name one time a clock was mentioned in Harry Potter. (2) 5. What is a clock on your wrist called? (2)
Part Two:
Write a brief history on the clock. Anything under 100 words will not be counted, however, please don't give me something over 500 words. This part is worth 60 points.
Part Three:
As a young witch or wizard, it is your job to make a clock work for those who are busy. How will your clock work? Will it have a built in organizer for the working family member? Will it have alarms go off every time someone tries to break into your home? This is clock, make it however you want! Worth 30 points.

Part Two: Write a brief history on the clock. Anything under 100 words will not be counted, however, please don't give me something over 500 words. This part is worth 30 points. From as early as the 2nd millennium BC, people were already finding ways to keep track of time. The simplest way at the time was by using the sun; this was done by looking at the shadows cast from the sun by a vertically placed stick. Depending on where the shadow fell, it was possible to keep a relatively consistent sense of time. Other early clocks were also used, such as the water clock, which worked by measuring the flow of water into a tank throughout the day; this was less accurate because the flow of water was not always constant. In the 13-14 century AD, many were trying to make a clock for astronomical purposes rather than mundane every day use, and were successful in 1275. The process allowed a toothed wheel to turn, catching against knobs held up by a rod oscillating back and forth which was regulated by a horizontal bar called a foliot. These clocks were much less efficient than modern-day, losing or gaining fifteen mintues to a half hour at a time. Next came the domestic clock which used a single hand that goes around a twelve hour face powered by a spring that would make pocket watches possible, and quickly after the wrist watch by the 1500s. By 1650 a pendulum was being used in clocks that made them much more accurate. Once electricity was being used, electric motors replaced all previous forms of movement, so all clocks were then powered electrically. This led to further developments such as the alarm clock, digital clock and more accurate clocks down to nanoseconds and further.
Part Three: As a young witch or wizard, it is your job to make a clock work for those who are busy. How will your clock work? Will it have a built in organizer for the working family member? Will it have alarms go off every time someone tries to break into your home? This is clock, make it however you want! Worth 10 points. My clock comes with all the standard applications of a clock used for telling time (rotating hands, easy to set alarm with a simple charm that will wake you up by Wizarding Radio or any manner of pre-set alarms from ocean waves to yourself talking!) but comes with many new features as well. Using a simple anti-break in charm, you can access a hidden chamber behind the clock complete with an Undetectable Extension Charm and a charm that keeps it light weight, that can hold anything! Waterproof, fireproof, and jinx/hex proof, this clock is safe for use anywhere. The hidden chamber comes with a voice entered address and contact books as well as a scheduling book. Coming in a variety of forms from a grandfather clock to a pocket watch, everyone can have their favorite form of clock/watch, and with the hidden chamber, you need never carry a purse or bag again as everything will fit right inside.

| For Part 1 I used Wikipedia (for information on clocks) and Harry Potter Wiki (for mentions of a clock). Part 2: Ancient Egyptians, Greeks and Romans used sundials and water clocks to measure time. In the 13th Century, there was a demand for a more dependable way to gauge time. Medieval artisans then created the mechanical clock. It was inaccurate and unreliable until the pendulum was invented. The clock played a key role in Western civilization. The earliest mechanical clocks were invented just before 13 hundreds, and told time by striking a bell. By the early 15 hundreds, inventors had developed spring-driven mechanical clocks that were small enough to be portable. Clocks are essential in everyday muggle items, such as Cell Phones, Global Positioning Systems and much more. Again, Wikipedia. Part 3: This clock has three settings: Muggle (on the off chance that there is one nearby), Family and Daily Activities. Family setting is much like something I saw in the second movie, where each member of the family has spoke with their name on and their are places on the clock such as home, work, school, etc. It follows the person everywhere they go. Daily activities is quite like the clock described in the second book: there are activities instead of numbers, and the clock with clang loudly at the time when the activity should begun until someone actually starts the activity. This way no one gets out of de-gnoming the garden | |

| Muggle Studies - The ClockPart One:Part Two:
Write a brief history on the clock. Anything under 100 words will not be counted, however, please don't give me something over 500 words. This part is worth 30 points. For years, people have found ways to measure time. Devices from sundials to water clocks have been used to observe time. Did you know that the Ancient Egyptians split the day into two, which is why now we don't use twenty-four hour time - in most cases. Most muggles relied on Mother Nature to tell them the time; they used shadows and the sun to find out what day it was! Over time, better things were produced: hourglasses, sundials, shadow clocks, water clocks... Then there were things we use now! Like, analogue clocks, digital clocks... Even grandfather clocks - some of which are extremely famous! So which of those are the most effective? Now that is for me to know and you to find out! Sources: The same Wikipedia page. Part Three:
As a young witch or wizard, it is your job to make a clock work for those who are busy. How will your clock work? Will it have a built in organizer for the working family member? Will it have alarms go off every time someone tries to break into your home? This is clock, make it however you want! Worth 10 points. My clocks is one of many hands, right in the middle it shows how safe you are in your home at that moment, with a round scale from 'safe and sound' to 'GET OUT OF THE HOUSE!' This, I think, is most useful for wizards living in He Who Must Not Be Named's time. On the outside, it has another scale, showing the safety of people outside your home - those who live with you, of course... If they are in danger, you'll know. The last of the tools, is a series of buttons to emergency services, most of them to the Ministry. If you press one, someone will apparate to your house immediately; this is to be used only for emergencies, obviously. Source: None I had a lot of fun with this! But I'm a new student, so it might be a bit messy... Sorry! | |
