Dementor’s Kiss: Should it be brought back?

Before the Ministry had giants to guards the very beings kept inside its walls, hooded creatures known as Dementors used to stay guarding Azkaban. Since their betrayal to the Ministry to join the Dark Lord the Ministry has stopped the use of Dementors in 1998. Before this time though the Ministry used to practice the Dementor’s Kiss to those unfortunate enough to receive this punishment. It is a punishment far worse than death itself. The body of the person in question remains, however the soul of the victim is no longer there. The body is empty, without a soul just to stay there and continue on living. Those who have the Kiss perform have no chances of coming back as a ghost for there is no soul left. This fate used to be used on many criminals like Barty Crouch Jr. and countless others but now the Dark Lord has been defeated should the Dementor’s Kiss be used once again?

Many witches and wizards dread the idea of being given the Dementor’s Kiss. It is almost like giving them the death sentence. They would continue to exist but would have no soul. The victim has a wakeful unconscious state, but they are not truly aware of what is taking place around them. These victims once they have the Dementor’s Kiss performed on them would have to be dependent on another for almost everything. If this is the case, then it wouldn’t be a good idea to use the Dementor’s Kiss on someone. It has been stated by many that it is worse than death itself. However if the person has their soul remove they are no longer fully aware of what is taking place. They would have no feelings or any idea of what they did to deserve the fate they just received. They would just exist without really existing. In this sense keeping the Dementor’s Kiss would be useless, the death sentence would be a much better practice to keep instead. This way they could be punished for what they did but afterwards no one will have to take care of their body.

The main reason why the Dementor’s Kiss should not be brought back is because of the very creatures themselves who perform the act. After the great battle in 1998 it is seen that Dementors hold no true loyalty. They think for themselves and will obey whoever can give them the more souls to feed off of. In 1996 the Dark Lord was able to get the Dementors to stop obeying the Ministry and help out him and his followers the Death Eaters. Unless the Ministry could be certain they would be able to satisfy the needs of the Dementors using them again would be a terrible idea.

The Dementor’s Kiss was a bad idea from the start. Not only did the Ministry choose creatures that could be easily persuaded to join their enemies but they also did not fully think about having to deal with the bodies of the soulless victims until their bodies passed on as well. There are far better ways to punish witches and wizards for their crimes. Azkaban, even though it is no longer guarded by Dementors is a great place to hold wizards who did the crime. For those who did such violent and hateful crimes that the Ministry used to take care of by using the Dementor’s Kiss would be better off having the death penalty instead. There are many different alternatives to the Dementor’s Kiss so it’s return as punish is not foreseeable in the future.

Really interesting topic and good at showing different perspectives, too. Maybe a little more on the history of how Dementors got involved in the first place, what kind of deal they made, etc might have strengthened your point!
