| Muggle Music
At last! (I hear you say) A topic I can talk about! :D (Oh, I know y’all too well hehe)
I know you all love your music, muggle or magic: rock, pop, classical, metal; the list is endless!
Your task is to pick any music genre and write about it, giving information about where it originated. You should also include at least three (but don’t make it longer than five!) examples of this type of music today.
This is worth 60 points, and should be written in no less than 250 words.
Bonus
Write a short paragraph about an artist or group who you think has changed Muggle Music. What have they done that has made music better (or worse!)?
The bonus is worth 40 points, and should be less than 200 words.
Don’t forget to cite your sources, brain or not!

| Subject: Baroque Period Thu Jun 01 2006, 14:42 | |
| Baroque Period: The Baroque period lasted from 1600-1750 and was characterized by the musicians, Johann Sebastian Bach, Henry Purcell, George Handel, and Antonio Vivaldi. It was characterized by polyphonic music, a vast array of ornaments, and chord progressions. In piano, the use of ornaments occurred as a way to hide the inability of the harpsichord and clavichord to increase and decrease in sound (the piano had not yet been invented), while the volume was changed. This sudden increase or decrease in sound was known as terrace dynamics, which was one of the distinct trademarks of the Baroque period. Music of this time also was emotionally charged and portrayed mainly one emotion throughout the piece, although the music remained on time and much more structured than the lax and emotion-filled Romantic Period. Yet, the pieces written at this point in Classical music, as a whole, have set the example for the following composers and musicians. These pieces include Bach’s Goldberg Variations, Handel’s Messiah, and Vivaldi’s Four Seasons. Some of the types of music written in that time period include operas and oratorios. The opera, which had been invented in the late Renaissance period (the period before the Baroque period), was widely composed in the Baroque period, and the oratorios reached their peak with Bach and Handel. Also, the concerto, often is seen as the height of instrumental learning, flourished during the Baroque period, and the concerto grosso, or piece featuring a small group against an orchestra was invented. The fugue, toccata, and dance music like the gigue and minuet and trio, were also highly prevalent during this time. Bonus:(this is supposed to be under 200 words, right? If not, I'll redo it.) Johann Sebastian Bach has changed music. His compositions are often seen as the building blocks for technique and have inspired following composers such as Beethoven and Chopin. His fugues are considered the hardest type of music written for piano, with their many different melodies and harmonies that intertwine endlessly, and his Well-Tempered Clavier, Goldberg Variations, and The Art of Fugue for piano are considered the epitome of Baroque music. But I also have been taking violin lessons since I was four. (lol I started out with a cardboard violin until I knew how to hold it correctly and wouldn’t be dropping a real violin all the time. I swear 2 god that’s true) So I decided to talk about the classical music. Classical music was mostly popular between the years of 1750-1820. The classical era of music was based on simple, non-emotional music. Some of the most famous men from this era included Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart, Franz Joseph Haydn, and Ludwig van Beethoven. Vienna was the music center in Europe, where many of the composers lived and worked. Classical music often had simple harmony, and certain forms such as the rondo or the minuet. Harpsichords and pianos were used often. Dynamics were very important in the classical period. During the classical period, three orchestral forms were invented: the concerto, the symphony, and the sonata. Three examples of songs from this period are Gigue from Sonata in D by Vevarci (don’t know about sp, my violin book is downstairs), Concerto for Two Violins by Bach, Gavotte by Lully, Musette by Handel, and Gavotte by Gossic. | I chose rock because it is my favourite of course, so here we go rock fans this is where is originated, Rock n roll originated in America in the 1950’s when a man named Alan Freed decided to combine the music of black’s and whites together. The black’s music was more blues and rhythm while the whites were more pop and country-western. So he made up the name of ‘rock n roll’ for the combination. He got the name from lyrics of an old song in 1948 which suited this new genre of music perfectly. He combined the two race’s music together to get past the discrimination and learn more of their culture. Also so the black’s could learn more of white’s music culture. Alan did not create the name but he renovated the meaning of it. Nowadays rock music has been twisted into nearly heavy from early songs that were described as rock such as Elvis Presley whose songs were the same kind of rhythm and blues as the black’s earlier songs were. The strong rhythm and blues music known as rock has long been stamped out as new millennium bands become heavier and more emotional in this genre. The music mainly consists of two main instruments: Guitar(electric or acoustic) and drums. But keyboard and base guitar have been introduced. Another genre has been made out of rock and that is the Heavy metal music, which is more hardcore and less bluesy then rock. Here are some examples of rock music today are: Grinspoon Nickleback 3 Doors down U2 The Rolling Stones Bonus: I have chosen The Beatles for my bonus because they took the world by storm in the 1960’s. The sold over one billion records worldwide and have 40 singles. They were very popular for the way they changed rock music into more folk/electronic music. They were also very famous for the way they dressed and looked as well as their amazing talent in instruments and well known voices and famous songs.A huge wave of ‘Beatlemania’ rose up, and fans could buy nearly anything with John Lennon,Paul McCartney,George Harrison and Ringo Star’s faces on them. http://www.answers.com/topic/rock-n-rollhttp://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Beatles | |

| I’ve decided to talk about my favorite type of music, country. It started out as Country and Western Music, but was latter changed to plain Country in an effort to help lost the “hillbilly” image. Country is said to have originated Western and in the Southern, states of America. However it really began in folk songs and ballads. Early recordings in the 1920’s were country dance songs with fiddles and guitars as the main instruments, usually with a banjo in the background. Sometimes they also included a mandolin or a harmonica. In the 1930’s people know as “singing cowboys” such as Gene Autry took the lyrics to songs and altered them a bit. In the 40’s the Honky-tonk style was born turning the spotlight to people like Ernest Tubb and Hank Williams. During that time country music became much more popular. Nashville then also became the center of country music because of Williams’ success. The 50’s & 60’s produced people such as Johnny Cash, Loretta Lynn, and Charley Pride. In the 70’s it changed again, this time to give the “outlaws” a time to shine with people like Willie Nelson, music such as this is referred to as Old Country. All of this happened before we came to the style of Country music we have today, which many people will also call New Country or Modern Country. Some examples of New Country today include: Rascal Flatts Big and Rich Little Big Town Brooks and Dunn LeAnn Rimes And Tim McGraw Sources: http://www.britannica.com/eb/article-9026573?tocId=9026573 | |

| Hello Lil Sis! Yes I have actually done your homework so I hope you enjoy it lol - now you get a taste of my extra long - never ending writing skills lol.
~*~*~
Your task is to pick any music genre and write about it, giving information about where it originated. You should also include at least three (but don’t make it longer than five!) examples of this type of music today.
This is worth 30 points, and should be written in no less than 250 words.
During the Civil War, many slaves occupied their time by composing their own music. Different types of field tools and other common farm items were used. Slaves sang about their emotions, the difficult present, the past, and their hopes for the future. After the Civil War, many blacks moved to the North to pursue jobs. Because of their love of music, some wanted to stay in the music business. In the 1940s, Jazz transformed from dance music into sophisticated art music. Because of that, it was called "Rhythm and Blues."
It was coined as a musical marketing term in the United States in 1949 by Jerry Wexler at Billboard magazine. This style combined jazz, gospel, and blues. R&B was initially used to identify the style of music that later developed into rock and roll.
The 1950s was the premier decade for classic rhythm and blues. It overlapped with other genres such as jazz and rock and roll. A strong, distinct style straddling the border with blues came out of New Orleans and was based on a rolling piano style. It was not until the 1980s that the term "R&B" regained ordinary usage.
R&B came to be a major part of American popular music. It is also referred to as "urban contemporary" or "urban pop", contemporary R&B is distinguished by a slick, electronic record production style, drum machine-backed rhythms, and a smooth, lush style of vocal arrangement. By the early 1980s, however, funk and soul had become sultry and sexually-charged.
With the transition from soul to R&B in the early to mid 1980s, solo singer Luther Vandross and new stars like Prince and Michael Jackson took over. In the early 1990s, R&B group Boyz II Men repopularized classic-soul inspired vocal harmony, and several similar groups would follow in their footsteps. Prominent hip hop influences would record in a smooth, soft style of R&B termed quiet storm.
In the early 1990s, alternative rock, adult contemporary, and gangsta rap ruled the charts, and R&B artists began adding even more of a rap/hip hop sound to their work. The artists of this time brought hip hop slang, style, and attitudes to R&B music. The subgenre also includes a heavy gospel influence with vocal inflections and sounds.
During the late-1990s and early 2000s, the influence of pop on R&B could be heard in the work of several pop musicians. In the United Kingdom, R&B found its way into the UK garage subgenre of 2Step, typified by R&B-style singing accompanied by breakbeat/jungle rhythms. By the 2000s, R&B and hip hop had increased to the point where the only prominent difference between a record being a hip hop record or an R&B record was whether it’s vocals were rapped or sung. Some R&B singers have used elements of Caribbean music in their work, especially dancehall and reggaeton.
Bonus
Write a short paragraph about an artist or group who you think has changed Muggle Music. What have they done that has made music better (or worse!)?
The bonus is worth 20 points, and should be less than 200 words.
Boyz II Men were a popular act, not just in the U.S, but worldwide. Boyz II Men became recognized as a 1990s version of The Temptations. Boys II Men had a clean-cut image, smooth harmonies, and synchronized dance and performance movements. The members of Boyz II Men were particularly noted for their vocal abilities, and helped continue a trend in R&B towards an emphasis on emotive singing.
The influences of the group were felt and heard across throughout the R&B world. Groups showing obvious inspiration from Boyz II Men's work and singing style, among them, All 4 One, and later Dru Hill, Jagged Edge, and many others.
Also notable is that several record producers saw Boyz II Men's popularity with white audiences, and developed several acts in the same vein as Boyz II Men, but with white male singers instead of black ones. Because of this, Boyz II Men is often considered to have started the "boy band" craze that reached a climax by the end of the 1990s, with groups such as The Backstreet Boys and *NSYNC, going on to widespread international success, and others, such as Motown act 98 Degrees, finding more moderate mainstream success.

| The music genre im going to write about is country.Country originated many years ago mainly in Tennessee. The Grand Ole Opry was the place where all the famous and well known country stars would sing their heart out with many people to listen to them.Of course nowadays country music is much more appreciated and much more popular also. Country music has changed the way people see the music industry majorly.Back then some of the very famous country singers were Hank Williams,Loretta Lynn,Gene Autry,Willie Nelson, etc.A few of those artists I mentioned are still alive today and even more appreciated than ever. Now lets focus on todays ontry music.Ill name some famous country singers of today.Kenny Chesney,Keith Urban,Martina Mcbride,Faith Hill, etc.Country music is every cowboys favorite pasttime.Driving down the road in a ford pickup, your hand out leaning out the window listening to country music it doesnt get much better than that.
Bonus:MY favorite country singer is Martina Mcbride i've never seen one picture of her where she wasnt really pretty. Her songs are usually always happy and her songs have affected the way I look at life. The main lesson i've learned from her music is that no matter how darkened and evil the world never give up hope and I never have and I'm who thats how shes made me who I am today.

| Part 1 Jazz is a form of music that was first introduced in New Orleans around 1891. Apparently, it started by accident when a barber, called Buddy Bolden simply picked up a cornet and started to play. Before jazz, music was quite different; it had rules and followed patterns, whereas the introduction of jazz broke the rules and became a new music style. The Blues are a form of jazz music based on sad and melancholy notes and scales. Blues express feelings that fit in well with the jazzy tone and the lilt of the tunes make people empathise with a particular event, making the style of music very suitable for movies, whether angst or just thought provoking. The collective term for the jazz style of music soon branched out into more and more diverse forms that each had their characteristics. For example, Boogie Woogie is quite famous for its jazzy yet fast and lively traits. It evolved when the piano was used as a substitute for the jazz guitars in bars during the early 19s. Swing is another form of jazz that evolved. It also became a style that people were able to dance to. In a stereotypical swing band, there were normally about ten players, using saxophones, trumpets, and other brass instruments to give a rhythmic, offbeat that was catchy and melodic. Soul jazz is another type of jazz music that is repetitive, and is a derived from a sub-category of hard-bop. Some musicians don’t consider soul-jazz to be completely different from hard-bop, that there is very little distinction between the two. Examples of jazz bands are: The Syncopated Five The Wolverine Orchestra Fletcher Henderson Orchestra Jelley Roll Morten’s Red Hot Peppers Source: http://meltingpot.fortunecity.com/zaire/721/historyframe.htmPart 2 The Maestro, A. R. Rahman is known in India and even worldwide as “Asia’s Mozart” or “The Mozart of the East”. Mainly, his talent lies in fusing together different styles and forms of music with different keys and tunes to weave together a whole new melody. He transformed the Indian film industry from having music as simple fillers, to a main part of the show. His name became a household term literally overnight! I think that Rahman’s work is fantastic and without his input, we may never have the Bollywood hit movies such as “Dil Se”, “Lagaan”, “Taal” and many more…They would be there, and the acting talent would still be commendable, but they would just be films; they would be lifeless because the audience would not be able to empathise well enough with the characters to have the story pull at their heartstrings. Of course, we can’t forget the amazing musical he designed in London: Bombay Dreams, which brought a taste of the romantic Indian ideals to the UK. His best song in the musical is “Shakalaka Baby” which, I remember, was sung for about a year at every dance class after Bombay Dreams came out… Source: My head | |
