Although everyone has totally different finger prints, there are only three main patterns which can be found upon the tips of the finger, the arch, the loop and the whirl, the loop being the most common from all over the world.



Although these are the three main types, this is not to say that they are the only types of finger print. The less common ones are many and include such prints as the double loop, the peacock’s eye and the tented arch. These may not be found upon every finger on a person’s hand. They are more likely to be situated upon only one finger as they are so rare. A rare fingerprint means that the type of print is found on less than one person in one hundred people.

Some types of finger prints:

The ‘ulnar loop’ is one of the most common types of finger prints. It is actually believed rare not to have this type of print on the pinky side of the hand.
The ‘whirl’ is a spiral pattern which is also another more common print and can often be found on the thumb, index finger and ring finger.
The ‘radial loop’ is commonly found upon the index finger though is extremely rare on other fingers.
The ‘arch’ is the most simplest of finger prints, which never loops. It is uncommon on all fingers except for the little finger. If this is found on the little finger, it is a very rare print.
The ‘double loop’ is two loops going in two different directions but is actually a type of whirl print. This is an uncommon print and is extremely rare on the ring finger and little finger.
The ‘peacocks eye’ is a tiny whirl inside a loop. It is most common on the ring finger though very rare on the thumb.
The ‘tented arch’ is a pattern in the shape of an arch with horizontal ridges in the middle creating a tent like pattern, hence the name. This is a rare print, though extremely rare on the thumb and little finger.
The ‘accidental’ is anything else that does not appear in the above categories. It is extremely rare to have a pattern that does not fit in other categories; usually it comes down to the fact that the person has not read their print correctly.
