Galileo was born in Pisa Italy. His Father was a musician, and his mother a Giulia degli Ammannati. Galilei was the first of six (some say seven) siblings. His family belonged in the nobility but were not rich. In the 1570's his family moved to Florence. In 1581 Galilei attended the University of Pisa where his father wished he would study medicine. It was at the University of Pisa where Galilei began his study of the pendulum although it was not until 1602 until he discovered that the period in which the pendulum swings back and forth does not in fact depend on the arc of the swing. Eventually this discovery would lea don to other things like his furture studying of time intervals and his ideas of the pendulum clock.
Also at the uneriversity he learned about the teachings of the Greek scientist Aristotle. However Galilei was skeptic of his approach to physics. Aristotle believed that objects fall faster through medium than lighter ones. Galilei experimented and found this not to be true.
In 1592 he became a proffesor at the University of Padua where he became fasinated with shipmaking and such. It was there that he patented the invention of a pump. The pump was an invention that rose water using only one horse.
Galilei never married but he had three children with Marina Gamba. Two girls who joined the convent, and a son. Later Marina got married to someone else so Vincenzio Galilei's son joined him in Florence.
After Galilei began to invent things he ended up making the telescope, modeled after the European telescopes that could magnify three times. His however cold magnify twenty. With this telescopes he discovered the four satellites of Jupiter, see the moon, verify the phases of Venus, and see sunspots. This also proved that the planets revolved around the sun, contrary to the sun revolving around Earth. This was called the Copernican System

The Two New Sciences. Some of it was about the law of falling bodies. It was the equation of distance traveled by the falling object under the influence of gravity for a certain amount of time. Galilei also worked on other sections involving the force of percussion, but he didn't like it himself. It begins to say that a large structure proportioned exactly like a smaller structure must neccisarily be weaker.

What is your opinion of Galileo and his theories and inventions? Word count at least 250 – 300

From what I've read he seems like a good man. When he wrote about the Earth revolving around the sun he did have some problems with the Catholic Church. When he wrote his book about it, the Church had wanted to make it more of a theory than a fact. He was eventually put under house arrest close to the end of his life. It was amazing really, I read this part where he was pleading with the Catholic Church, to look at the Bible and where the scriptures make it appear as the Earth revolves around the sun, not too take evrything literally. That was back from a time where people wrote as they saw and you shouldn't look upon little bits of information for answers. Does it matter? There is greater meaning in the Bible than what revolves around what. Anyway, that kinda inspired me. Too bad he died in house arrest, kind of a sad way to die, but before he did he made the first pendulum clock.

He also made other theories that a little mind like mine couldn't possibley understand without ripping their hair out. So I respect him for that. It was also interesting on how he found out that two objects falling; don't fall at different speeds. That surprises me every day. I just dropped a phone and a nail clipper. They didn't appear to fall at different times... It still amazes me! How is that possible? But anyway he discovered many things, including the four moons on Jupiter. How cool is that? To discover something. When you think about it, nowadays it doesn't really make a difference, because were so used to all these ideas, but this was hundreds of years ago that he was discovering all these things. So my opinion on all of this? Amazing. He like many other inventers, and discoverers, were the beginning of this modern world we have today. His ideas were amazing, and his brain was monstrously huge.

2. Describe the early life of Galileo leading into how he fell into astronomy (10)
Born in Florence, Italy, on February 15th he was the first of six children. At the age of 17 he went to the University of Pisa to study medicine. While at the university he began the study of the pendulum, according to legend he watched a suspended lamp swing backward and forward in the Cathedral of Pisa. In 1602 he made his most important discovery about the pendulum which then went on to further studies and his idea of a pendulum clock. At university he studied Aristotelian physics, but he questioned the theory ‘heavier objects fall faster through a medium than lighter ones’ and eventually – by carrying out further experiments disproved it. He then wrote a book about his discoveries of motion and entitled it’ De Motu’ which means On Motion. In 1592 Galileo was appointed professor of mathematics at the University of Padua. While teaching there, he frequently visited a place called the Arsenal, where Venetian ships were docked and loaded. During his visits to the Arsenal, he became fascinated by nautical technologies, such as the sector and shipbuilding. In 1593, he was presented with the problem involving the placement of oars in galleys. He treated the oar as a lever and correctly made the water the fulcrum. A year later, he patented a model for a pump. His pump was a device that raised water by using only one horse. Galileo’s most famous invention was the telescope, his telescope could magnify by twenty, unlike the other European ones which could only magnify by three. It was with this telescope that he looked at the moon, discover the four satellites of Jupiter, verify the phases of Venus and discover sunspots. His discoveries also proved that the earth, and all other planets revolve around the Sun.

One of Galileo’s books was ‘Concerning Two New Sciences’ written in 1638. this book has references to Scientific materials and the Law of falling bodies.

What is the cause of the tides? In the age of Galileo this question had many answers but it was Galileo that linked the answer to the Solar System. He then wrote a letter examining the many ways in which water in a vase can move. He then made a comparison between the water in the vase and the seas.

6. Who was Galileo’s daughter and what did she do for a living? (2)
Galileo had two daughters Virginia and Livia. They were both nuns at a convent and were very poor.

7. What ailment did Galileo have near the end of his life? (1)
At the end of his life Galileo went blind - first in his right eye and then in his left.




Part 2: (Worth 20 points)

What is your opinion of Galileo and his theories and inventions? Word count at least 250 – 300

I think Galileo was a genius, he has done so much for the world because he was not just an astronomer, he was a scientist and mathematician too. His many inventions and discoveries have helped us today. For example the discovery of four of Jupiter’s satellites and the Aristotelian theory that he disproved. Galileo built the telescope which many of our modern telescope designs are based on. With this telescope he also discovered a lot of information that astronomers today need, the things that Galileo discovered scientists today are only building on now. He also formed solutions to many problems e.g. the problem at the docks in Padua which required him to make the pump. He also taught at the university meaning that he passed on some of his knowledge to the younger generation which is a very important thing to do. He has inspired many people all over the world; something which I think is a great achievement.

I also think he was a brave man because of the fact that after the Catholic Church had banned theories he still went on to explore and expand on them. He still formulated theories based on them. Though some people may call this plain stupid I think it shows that he was passionate about his work – he was not going to let anything stand in his way. He also went against the Church – something which in those days not many people did.

2. Galileo was the eldest of six children, though some people believe seven. He was born in Pisa, Italy in 1564 to a family of nobility, though not overly rich. His father was a musician from Florence. At the age of 17, he went to study medicine at University, because his father had wanted him to become a doctor. He worked on persuading his father that he did not want to become a medic, and changed his studies to maths. His studies in Physics and maths led him to research into the Pendulum and he questioned the theory that objects of different masses fall at different speeds. As his research continued, he developed the telescope, which led him into the field of astronomy.

3. Discourse on Two New Sciences is about all of Galileo’s mechanical research and his views on the laws of motion

5. His theory on the tides was based on how he saw water move while it was in a vase and he compared it to the seas and earth. He said that as a vase moves, the water must move too, as it is pulled by gravity and kept in by the vase. He then said that the seas move because the Earth is moving on its axis and the Moon is pulling it away from the Earth, but not as strongly as the Earth’s gravity keeping it on the earth.

6. He had two daughters, Virginia and Livia, who both lived in convents for their lives. Virginia inherited his mind and was very much loved, but Livia was unwell for most of her life in the convent.

7. He became completely bind.

Part 2: (Worth 20 points)

I think that Galileo was a great scientist, who discovered so many things that we take for granted today. He wasn’t the only scientist, but his work in physics and astronomy is awe-inspiring. This is not only because it was such a great revelation, but also because he was working against the beliefs and views of the majority during his time because of the Church’s influence. Galileo was extremely clever and it is amazing that in those days, people would live for long enough, considering the diseases and standards of living, to dedicate themselves so thoroughly into the sciences and maths. He was a great mathematician as well as scientist and the fact that he was hired as a court mathematician for dukes and for Tuscany is quite impressive.

I also empathise with him because so few people believed his theories at the time, because, even if they were true, the church still belittled them and they seemed to far-fetched for the closed minds of the community. I know that he became completely blind as he grew older and I felt bad that such an intelligent mind would not be able to work properly without the help of his students.

In conclusion, Galileo Galilei was a great scientist, and a good person in general because he never gave up on what he wanted to do, even when people were against him and his decisions. My opinion is that Galileo should be admired and his inventions should be and they are) shown in museums so that everyone can see how important he was to the world of science.

Son of Vincenzo Galilei (a musician) and Giulia degli Ammannati, Galileo was born in Pisa, Italy on February the 15th of 1564. Being the first of six or seven children, he and his family moved to Florence in the early 1570’s.
In 1581 he started studying at the University of Pisa but due to financial problems he drop out. However in 1592 he was appointed professor of mathematics at the university of Padua.
In the meanwhile Galileo invented many mechanical devices and despite many people thinks that Galileo invented the telescope that’s not true. He was the first, though, using it to observe the sky and based on sketchy descriptions of telescopes invented in Netherlands, in 1608 Galileo developped one telescope with 8x magnification and later improved it up to about 20x.
With the telescope Galileo started is astronomy studies during which he discovered the 4 biggest satellites of Jupiter, observed a Supernova, verified the phases of Venus and discovered Sunspots.

Galileo wrote an astronomy book called “Sidereus Nuncius” which can be translated as “Sidereal Messenger”. The book’s a short treatise published in Latin by Galileu in March 1610. It was the fisrt cientific treatise based on observations made through a telescope. It contains the results of Galileo’s early observations of the Moon, the stars and the moons of Jupiter.

5. What is Galileo’s theory of the tides? (5)
In his 1632 Dialogue Galileo presented a physical theory to account for tides, based on the motion of the Earth. His theory gave the first insight into the importance of the shapes of ocean basins in the size and timing of tides; he correctly accounted, for instance, for the negligible tides halfway along the Adriatic Sea compared to those at the ends. As a general account of the cause of tides, however, his theory was a failure.


6. Who was Galileo’s daughter and what did she do for a living? (2)
Gelieo had two daughters which he sent to San Matteo convent, Virginia and Livia.
Livia took the name Suor Arcangela. She was sick most of her life at the convent.
Virginia who took the name of Maria Celeste was Galileo’s eldest child, the most beloved and inherited her father’s sharp mind. Although Maria Celeste was confined inside the walls of the convent at San Matteo for the remainder of her life, She was a constant source of support for both her father, whose books began a firestorm of controversy in the Catholic Church, and the convent to which She was sent. Maria Celeste served as San Matteo's apothecary, and also kept the convent afloat through the influence of her father. She sent him herbal cures for his various maladies while additionally seeing to the convent's finances and occasionally staging plays from inside the convent's cloistered walls. There is evidence She prepared the manuscripts for some of Galileo's books. She is buried with Galileo at the Basilica di Santa Croce di Firenze.

He went blind of his right eye in July 1637 and eventually from his left eye in January 1638, becoming completly blind.

What is your opinion of Galileo and his theories and inventions? Word count at least 250 – 300

We can say that Galileo was a visionary. His contribute to the world is priceless. Despite his theories weren’t always correct he opened the way for discussion.
Besides being a visionary Galileo was also quite a genius, his work includes not only a single area of interests but many different ones like astronomy, technology, mathematics and physics.
Galileo was also smart enough to not let his pride ouverrule him so he made concessions with the Church and that may he managed to keep himself alive, differently from what happened with Giordano Brunno which was burned at the stake in 1600.
Another important aspect of Galileo’s work is his pionneering use of quantitative experiments with results analysed mathematically (Experimental Science), this gives any discoveries a more accurate validation. Until Galileo there was no tradition of such methods in Europe.
In astronomy beside’s the telescope I find very important his contribution to the heliocentric model, though he did not prove ir. If the heliocentric model was aproved it would cause a revolution in the church beliefs, which eventually did when the model proved to be right.
His contribution to physic must be refered too, specially his experiments involving rolling balls down inclined planes, which proved falling and rolling objects are acelerated independently pf their mass.
I could go on and on talking about Galileo’s achievements. The main point is that Galileo was a great and brilliant man and deserves our respect and admiration for all he’s done. I admire his work as we all should. Tha world owes him, it’s man like him that keep the world going and evoluting.

Galileo was born in Pisa (now in Italy), the oldest son of Vincenzo Galilei. The family moved to Florence in the early 1570s. In his middle teens Galileo attended the monastery school at Vallombrosa, near Florence, and then in 1581 matriculated at the University of Pisa, where he was to study medicine. However, he became enamoured with mathematics and decided to make the mathematical subjects and philosophy his profession, against the protests of his father. In 1585 Galileo left the university without having obtained a degree, and for several years he gave private lessons in the mathematical subjects in Florence and Siena. In 1588 Galileo applied for the chair of mathematics at the University of Bologna but was unsuccessful

Galileo saw the problem of the changing in tides in a different way, connecting it to the whole structure of the Copernican universe, though this theory was banned by the church. It covered the idea of the planets revolving around the sun, therefore this movement caused the tides to change.

Galeleo's eldest daughter was Virginia but adopted the name Maria Celeste when she became a nun. Livia, who took the name Suor Arcangela when becoming a nun, was his youngest daughter

What is your opinion of Galileo and his theories and inventions? Word count at least 250 – 300

Galilei Galileo, in my opinion, was an extremely powerfully intelligent man, who’s theories were more apt than he ever had others believe. I feel that the Church made his life and theories difficult, which would have put strain on him and his family, (perhaps one of the reasons his children became nuns?)
His theories and experiments, although pushed aside in his time, aided the more modern philosophers and scientists in their works, leading us to stand where we now do in the knowledge of the solar system.
He was also a very strong willed man. He spent years trying to persuade other scientists and over turn the church’s decision to annul his theories. Through this, he was also deemed by future people as a brave man, and I tend to agree with this. I know that I couldn’t do what he did!
The main thing that I am in awe of is his telescope! Yes, he invented many other things, though it is the telescope that I can relate to. Having looked through my dad’s telescope, and seen the crators so clearly on the moon as if it was so close, I think that it is unbelievable and amazing!

With only a bit of money he was given the position of being a mathmatician. He moved and was teaching geometry and other related subjects when he decided to include scientific endevors into his explorations.

What is your opinion of Galileo and his theories and inventions? Word count at least 250 – 300

His ideas were quite good and he possessed vast amounts of knowledge that most people back then wouldn't have thought of. Everyone thinks he invented the telescope but he was actually the inventor of a better telescope and of making correct modifications that proved to be useful and more accurate. Without his theories and observations we might not have been able to make as many discoveries as we have today and we might have never been able to explain anything about the tides and why the moon is so important to us. Galileo's discovers gave us a push forward into the reality that makes up our world in which we live. We could only imagine that things would have been discovered at a later time; and probably in not such a similar way.
He helped us form our theories and roots of what we wanted to learn and he ventured to write several books despite being accused of heresy.He worked really hard on the things that intrigued him and opened a doorway for us to venture into. The guy was really brilliant. By modifying and correcting the necessary improvements on the telescope its self. Though he may not have been the sole inventor,his work has put an unforgettable mark upon our scientific discoveries and his writings will live on with each thing we invent we follow his theories and we might possible be able to find more out than we thought of before. His work has survived all through these years, and as we advance into the future, we won't forget the impact that he has made on us.
