JRR Tolkein

I have read the hobbit and thought it was really good, so naturally, i went on to the first lord of the ring book - i think im going to give up lol - it is so, not difficult as such, but hard work to read it! Has anyone read these books?

Call me obsessed but heh, yes of course i've read the books.
9 times over and the Hobbit and the Silmarillion and Unfinished tales and yea etc.
It wasn't a hard book for me, but i must say it may be challenging.
But i promise you it is definitely worth reading, you will become inspired by all the beautiful charactors and storylines, you'll never want to put it down.

The one thing i have noticed is that the books seem to bring more sense to the films (as with harry potter lol) - i will try to struggle on!

Yes of course they, they have more background and the movies left out ELLADAN AND ELROHIR!!! How dare they!

I've read the books, all four of them. I like them a lot, the movies too.

Yun, I can't believe they took those things out of the movies too! It made me so angry... *is still angry*

The books are great and yes, like all books which are made into films, they bare so much more - the films have left so much out, which annoyed me, although i did like the films as well

I love the movies, but I .... havent really read the books.... I read the Hobbit, which was pretty good, but when I tried to read FotR, I got horribly lost and confused on the first page, so I went to RotK and read the last page of that to see what happened :D but that didnt tell me anything....

But that was a few years ago, so maybe I'll try to read them again...

i had my dad read all 4 books to me before bed when i was about 10 years old, and i must admit i did love them. me and my best friend went as merry and pippin for the book week parade in 6th grade! it was fun :D

after seeing bits of teh lotr movies...well i'm not really into it so i don't plan on reading it

I love the film but i really didnt get on with the books. Again, they are a too hard read for me

I have read the hobbit, and the first two in the LotR trilogy but none of the others yet

The books look sooooo long! I like reading, but not those big books. Aparat from HP, of course! XD

LOL... LotR is a really, really long trilogy.. maybe that's why I never finished it... XD I'm somewhere in the middle of the "Return of the King" and it took me about two years to get there.. I used to read it with looong breaks... like read it for two weeks, then stop for another 3 months or so... XD Anyway, the last time I've opened my LotR book (yeah I have all 3 volumes back together in one unbelievably thick book XD) was a long, long time ago, which means I'd have to re-read it all over to understand anything now - which evidently too lazy to do! XD

oh, and I read the Hobbit - entirely lol. When I was in the 8th grade, a friend and I did a presentation for school about the Hobbit.

Well the only one I read was the hobbit and that was in the comic book version. Though I really liked it lol! I don't think I would read the lord of the rings books though I shall just stick to the movie because I dunno just a little to bleurgh for me. But my dad has always been obsessed with them and when I was little and used to sleep at his house at the weekend. He used to read them to me for bed time stories. So I have sort of read them.

I'm a big Tolkien nerd. I've read Lord of the Rings, The Hobbit, and The Silmarillion. I started reading them not long after the movies came out.

He is a bit of a bore when it comes to sludging through certain sections of his book. His descriptions are long-winded, but he created such an amazing world full of history that I can't help but enjoy his books.

Just as a word of advice for anyone who wants to try The Silmarillion: It reminds me more of a history book or the Bible. Approach it in that sense and it will turn out better for you. Take it step by step. Take notes if necessary. Reread. And good luck!

I love love love JRR Tolkein! The Hobbit and Lord of the Rings series were amazing and I've also read some of the other extensions he wrote, like the Silmarillion. I'm so impressed that he managed to come up with an entire world and language. Ahhhh!

He spent the better part of his life on it... he was in his fifties or sixties when LotR/the Hobbit were published, wasn't he??

But as a life's work and legacy, it's really something spectacular.

Yeah, I think you're right. It was a loooooong time. That's a lot of dedication and work. But it was worth it cause it's epic!

I envy his passion and drive... it's hard to stay so focused on one thing for so long.

I agree. I could never focus on something long enough to create a whole world like that with awesome characters too. Like Gandalf!
