The cactus could be used in potions that are used to help dehydrate the drinker because cactus are good at storing water so it could also help the drinker to store some water too. It could also be used in a defensive spell that could cover the drinker with spines and protect him from others that might try to hurt him

It looks kind of redish and it has a lot of spines that it probably uses for protection. It looks like its in a group with four or five other plants. It is also surrounded by other types of plants too

Itchy Potion
Ingredients:

4 cactus spines
2 beetle eyes
small bunch of knotgrass
1 pint butterbeer

Bring the butterbeer to a slow boil in your cauldron. Add the knotgrass and stir clockwise 10 times. Add the 2 cactus spines and stir clockwise 2 times. Then add in the last 2 cactus spins and stir counter clockwise 2 times. Then add the beetle eyes and remove from the heat. Stir counterclockwise 5 times and pour into container.

When a teaspoon of this potion is added to an unsuspecting person's butterbeer, they will suddenly get itchy. Effects will last approximately one hour.

I have made this potion because i think the spines would be itchy if they touched you or were mixed into something and you drank it. Instead of being itchy in one body part, you would become itchy all over your body

Pricklyfingers Potion

Main Ingredients--Dragon liver, mandrake root and cacti spines. A few tips:
Make sure the spines are all undamaged. A potion containing broken spines will usually explode when placed over the fire. The liver should be finely blended, not chopped. Chopped liver has been said to cause indigestion for up to three days.

This potion is to reverse the effect of a limb 'falling asleep.' Often when a limb stays in one position for too long it will begin prickling, and might lose all sensation. This is a normal occurrence and usually goes back to normal on its own. However, if the wizard/witch in question was anywhere near a Kneazle while their limb was 'falling asleep' an odd reaction occurs and the limb will not stop prickling without the proper remedy.

The Pricklyfingers Potion contains cacti spines, which often have the same effect like a limb 'falling asleep' -- that burning, stinging sensation. However, when properly combined with mashed mandrake root, the effect of the cacti spines is reversed.

If using cockroach eyes, make sure they are of the flying variety. And only brown ones. Never black.

Cactus Stem Poison

6 ounces aconite
3 ounces belladonna
2 ounces Hellebore
1 ounce Saguaro cactus needles

Measure out all ingredients and mash the aconite and hellebore together. Raise your cauldron to a boil and add the belladonna and cactus needles whole. When concoction begins to smell foul, add the aconite/hellebore mixture. Store in a dark cabinet for 12 days to allow it to age. The poison will incapacitate anyone with just a sip, and kill if a whole bottle is drank.

I chose to use cactus needles because the Saguaro cactus needles are poisonous and would aid in the potion’s purpose-that is, to poison someone. Also, the sharp barbs of the needle would cause significant harm to the throat and scratch the victim on the way down.

Here we can see a quite lovely sample of a barrel cactus. If you look closely you’ll notice how the cactus appears to be leaning slightly. It is, in fact, leaning towards the south, something all barrel cactuses do.
