Has anyone read A Great and Terrible Beauty and the sequel Rebel Angels? I've read them both and I like them A LOT!
The third and final book in the Trilogy is The Sweet Far Thing, and I'm soooooo excited for it.
AND the greatest piece of news EVER is that they might be making Beauty into a movie! *squeee*

| Okay so I finally finished The Sweet Far Thing today. I must agree with streams and say that I was disappointed to say the least. The book kept building up and making me wait for all of the answers and a glorious end, but I never got either. Don't Click this if you haven't read the book or it will ruin it for you. (Really I'm not kidding)- Spoiler:
Can someone please explain to me how she can expect the avid readers to accept that as an end to their beloved story?
I understand that the sentence "I try to adjust to the dawn, letting the tears fall where they may, because it is morning; it is morning, and there is so much to see." Was meant to show that Gemma knew she needed to go on and live her life, and that there was much she still needed to see before her time was over. But seriously why no actually how could the story just end at that??
It didn't answer anything, it just left everything open and sitting there. For instance, what happened when Gemma finally returned to the realms to set the treaty between the creatures? What did the three goddesses mean when they said she would never be offered the opportunity to travel with them to the other side again? Does that mean that when she dies Gemma is doomed to be tied to the realms for eternity like Bessie and Wendy? When Gemma dies will her and Kartik be reunited? Or does she have to join with the tree of all souls in order to truly be with him again? What ever happens of Gemma, Felicity & Ann? Do the girls ever reunite? Is the end of the story the end of their friendship?
Here is a list of some of the biggest upsets about the ending given:
Felicity runs off to Paris to try find love again along with her mother and Polly. Ann runs off with what I refer to as "the circus" and Gemma is off to New York and University. There's no mention of them ever seeing each other again or anything. It just doesn't sit right at all with me. We've had all this build up of these girls, these best friends who have been through the worst and back with each other. It just doesn't seem right for them to just part ways and that's the end.
Then there's the case with Gemma's father, what was that?!?! They were just sending him of to India to die alone?? Maybe it's just me but that's what I took from that entire scene. And truthfully it bothers me to no end. I just don't like the relationship between Gemma and her father ending on a note like that, it just doesn't seem right. Especially not after all the pain you see her go through as she tries to heal and fix her father.
I guess I can see what she wants, she wants each reader to believe what they want to happens in the end happens.
Personally my dream ending would be with Ann ending up happily married to Charlie or whomever, but the three of them living out the remainder of their lives together -as old spinsters working at Spence (oh the irony xD)- as the friends they've always been. And in the end they all die peacefully and return to the realms where Kartik & Gemma are finally eternally reunited.
I can't help it, but I'm a sucker for a happy ending, and this book didn't give it to me, at all. It just kind of left me teetering on this edge of knowing everything and at the same time knowing nothing at all. It left way to many questions unanswered, and left me reading the last chapters over and over again as if I'd missed a page containing some relevant information, only to find out I hadn't.
My secret hope is that it was left open for a reason, maybe another book to answer some of the questions still plaguing my brain. Or maybe accompanying books about the separate stories of the three girls/women and what happened to them once they went their separate ways. But in the end, I'm pretty sure this is the best ending we are ever going to get, which leaves an empty hole in the pit of my stomach.

| I finished it last night. Contrary to the posts above me - I loved it :D - Spoiler:
I found the ending sad, but in a bittersweet way. As Ginny said, it seemed like that was the way it should have ended. - Quote :

In a way I kind of agree with that, but I think it would have gone against the girls characters had they done anything different. For Ann, her dream was always to be on stage - and she got that wish. Felicity is a free spirit, she didn't want to be stuck in the corseted humdrum of Victorian London, and Gemma is independant and didn't want that either. I think these endings (or beginnings perhaps) for their lives are right. - Quote :
- Then there's the case with Gemma's father, what was that?!?! They were just sending him of to India to die alone??
I thought this was a good ending for her Father. India was the one place he had been truly happy, and it seemed to me that wanting to return there for the last days of your life isn't so terrible. I was sad that Kartik died and got stuck in the realms But I can understand why that happened. In the rules of the Victorian society, even if he had survived he and Gemma couldn't have been together in the way they would have wanted. I like the idea that he is waiting in the realms for her, which I assume is where she'll go when she dies. I wasn't terribly upset at what happened to Pippa, I've never liked her character. The Felicity/Pippa revelation wasn't all the shocking...like Gemma said I think you've always sensed it from the start of the series. Overall, I enjoyed it. But I agree some of the loose ends ought to have been tied up. As the header of my LJ says... The problem with novels is that they end on the last page...

| Its coming to England on the 6th of May so I will be able to get it then.
- Spoiler:
I loved it simply amazing it was slightly big and a little dreary in parts but I love how Gemmas charatcer build up throughout the book. And kartik o gosh was I the only one who cired when he died it was amazing I cried so much it was like the end of noughts and crosses. Perfectly romantic I love the way it ended too. With Gemma going of to live in america the perfect independent women. And Fee wow I can't beileve she was a lesbian. Just before Pippa kissed her I thought she was going to but I never suspected it throughout the books I thought she was just a ver strong willed girl though it does seem perfect to fit her. I also knew that pippa was going to turn out that way even beforee it was mentioned in the books well even before I opened the book I kenw that something was going to be amiss with Pippa. I'm also proud of Ann she grew a lot in these books and I'm glad that got her dream. I hope they all stay in contact.
I would have liked a little more ending to it though.
