Heathers

I bought this because it was cheap and I had some of a HMV voucher to use up, and because whenever I read reviews of Mean Girls, there was something along the lines of "Mean Girls is witty, sharp, but it's no Heathers".

So I was intrigued by that, and when I read the plot synopsis that intrigued me further. I've just watched it and have to say it was really good. Very twisted, but funny, in a kind of "that's twisted...but it's funny..should I laugh?" kind of way.

Winona Ryder and Christian Slater play the leads and they're great, although Slater's voice grates a little after a while. The plot isn't very believable, there are real moments when you go "huh?", but I don't think it's meant to be entirely believable anyway.

The plot is dark, with Ryder playing the role of Veronica, a girl whose best friends are the popular clique "The Heathers". She hates them and what they stand for, and so when she mentions to her new boyfriend JD that she wants the leader of the clique dead, he concocts a plan to rid the world of Heather for good.

The ending disappointed me a little, and having read what the original ending was going to be like on imdb I think they would have done better to stick with it.

The film was made in 1989, so the clothes and hair look a little dated, but the dialogue and plot have held up well, I think.

I read an analogy on IMDB that Heathers is like the older sister of Mean Girls, and I think that's right. It's witty, funny, sharp and very dark.

Although it's rated 18, I don't think there's much in it that warrants the rating. It could have been given a 15, in my opinion. There's a fair bit of swearing, but that's about it.

If you get the chance to see this, I recommend it.

The movie was bit shocking in its day, which is why it was probably rated so high. But it is one of my all time favorites! This and Pump Up the Volume are Christian Slater's best films-- altho in Heathers he does kind of channel Jack Nicholson.
