I'm guessing that James knew he was going to die, and gave it to Dumbledore, and told him to give it to Harry when he was older.

Or then Hagrid found it, covered baby Harry with it and gave it to Dumbledore! :D

I think it is possible that James felt he was protected under the spell and so gave it to Dumbledore before he died to offer it to the order or simply for his own benifit (although I am sure Dumbledore can become invisable by other means)

It makes most sense to me I mean didnt moody lend someone his cloack so those with one could like share it with someone whom needed it more. I then think afterwards who ever in the order he lent it to gave it Dumbledore and then Dumbledore gave it to Harry.
