| so this is the first decent book we've read in english class, aside from romeo and juliet and macbeth! I just finished reading it, finishing ahead of the class, and i was...well......wow. i mean i didn't like the ending. but the ending worked for the book, you know? and i loved all of the parallels to history that i could pick up on, and just....wow! i loved it! it rocked my world and was ten times better than catcher in the rye and the kite runner!!!! *dances* i'm hyper XD lol Anyway, who else thought this rocked? Comments? Luvvles, huggles, and hearts, Lifey::pirates:: | |

| lol yeah this was one of my favorite books that we had to read...sorta spooky and I could totally imagine it happening, especially when I realized the parallels that actually DID happen. | |

| its by George Orwell, and i really enjoyed it. in fact i rather want to reread is . Big Brother is watching after-all! i have to say, this book can drag in some sections (if you're not really into a lot of detail) but my advice (or rather from my experience reading the book) KEEP WITH IT, because when you look back and think about it, it really leaves an impact with you! its hard to describe, but this book definitely stuck with me and just...its hard to fully appreciate the book unless you finish it. and looking back on it, i really appreciate the ending. it couldn't really have ended any other way =) | |

| I just finished it, well, a while ago, but i couldnt stand the ending. - Spoiler:
I had heard many times about it being banned in places, so I was expecting some actual rebellion against the government and authority. And he worked so hard for the whole book to bring down the Party, and then he just gives in. That he had no willpower and let the Party win, probably annoyed me the most. I too loved finding the parallels between the story and actual history and just seeing the inside view of a closed off dictatorship. The part that I loved the most is just how realistic the main character was. There were times that i just wanted to scream at him because what he was doing was so stupid, but at the same time, i probably would have done the exact same thing. and for some reason, i found their language of Newspeak reallly interesting. :D

| I loved 1984, I think it's a work of a genius! I loved how all the details of the world Orwell created fitted in together, and it's really a book that leaves you thinking for a while ... And yes, reality parallels were strikingly realistic (and scary!). Oh and I loved the ending, too - I think it fitted in perfectly, and was written very realistically from the viewpoint of the action in the book and how it was natural to continue. Really, one of the few decent endings around, in my opinion ^^" (or maybe I'm just hard to please when it comes to book endings?)
Also, I recently read a book that took place in Mao's China, duiring the Cultural Revolution, and somehow the tone of it seemed familiar ... then I realised where I had read something similar before: 1984 - the only difference being, one was fiction, the other was a real story. XD

| Wow, this book is crazy. My English class read it. It is a good book I think, but I hated to think about how parallel it truly is, like you said Cris. I read this book and took it as a warning to our society, at least America's anyways, I dunno much about foreign governments except what I read in history or whatever is "hot" gossip or whatever. I still haven't decided if I like it or not, and I'm not sure if I would read it again...but maybe it's just because it wasn't a Harry Potter book, or something exciting, haha. | |
