The clues are;

1. I was born and mainly lived in Syracuse
2. I was given the challenge of launching the Syracusia, an enormous ship weighing 4 200 tons that had been built as a gift for Ptolemy, King of Egypt.
3. I invented 'engines of war' when the romans invaded
4. I was absorbed in my mathematics before I was captured and killed
