| So there's an ongoing debate about the 2012 London Olympic Logo. Mostly everyone hates it, and you can see why. It's brash and loud and just plain...ugly... The worst part about it? The design cost £400,000. There was a petition started I think to get rid of it, but this morning there's the following news: - Quote :
- Culture Secretary Tessa Jowell has insisted that the controversial new 2012 logo will stay, as inspectors began a three-day examination of London's plans for the Olympic Games.
Ms Jowell admitted the graffiti-style logo had caused a "storm" after it was unveiled last week but said it was "adaptable" and could be used in a "variety of different contexts".
"The logo will be the logo for the Olympic Games," she told BBC Breakfast.
"One thing you can say for this logo is that it has got people talking. It has got people talking about the Olympics, it has got people talking about what they like and what they don't like."
Her remarks were made as the 16-strong International Olympic Committee co-ordination commission was due to be updated on the progress of London's plans since the last official visit in April last year.
Asked whether the logo was worth its £400,000 fee, Ms Jowell said: "I think it was, yes."
She added: "Call me unusual, but I think it's terrific."
Ms Jowell insisted that planning and development for the Olympics was "on time".
Speaking on the BBC Radio 4 Today programme, she said the Olympic Delivery Authority would announce this week that tunnelling under the site is complete.
This would allow overhead cables to be taken down and the next stage of the development to get under way. Does everyone else think it's as ugly as I do?

| It's okay... maybe if they used different colors instead of the maroon-y purple and yellow. THose just don't flow But I really don't see how THAT could have cost as much as it did... | |

| pshhh it's called modern art.... XD ... or so. XD
honestly - it doesn't tell me anything. It's neither symbolic for the Olympic Spirit, nor for London .. it doesn't seem to actually mean anything - and that's more or less what a logo should do XD
and really, no offense.... Mrs Culture Secretary seems a bit off the rocker XD
but still, one thing is true - it did get people talking about it XD
oooooo *dreams* maybe I can get to watch the Olimpic games :D

lol obviously, I don't like it much...

| Yeah, the flashing one caused epileptic fits. And I think the BBC asked for normal people to send in their own designs and some of them were far better. http://news.bbc.co.uk/1/hi/in_pictures/6719747.stmFor example the first one in that gallery looks loads more professional and I much prefer it! | |

| lol, you're right! XD Many of them would have been way better! :D and I particularly like this comment of a logo's artist: - Quote :
- Dear BBC, I knocked up this running figure in 10 minutes in my lunch hour. Please may I have my £400,000.
XD oh, and another BBC article XD - Quote :
- Organisers of the 2012 London Olympics have defended their new logo following widespread public criticism.
The jagged emblem, based on the date 2012, was unveiled on Monday and has sparked a huge response.
An online petition calling for it to be scrapped has more than 25,000 signatures and over 3,200 messages have been posted on the BBC Sport website.
But a London 2012 spokesman told BBC Sport: "The emblem is flexible and will evolve over the next five years."
She added: "Our emblem needs to be modern, bold, flexible and as relevant today as in five years' time.
I don't like it at all - but then I didn't like flares. But here's why we should give it a chance..
"We want our Games to be different. We are hosting them in a different era, in 2012.
"The emblem needs to work across new platforms that reach young people."
The new logo was unveiled by Seb Coe, chairman of the London 2012 organising committee, at London's Roundhouse on Monday.
It was designed by the Wolff Olins agency and cost £400,000.
Lord Coe believes the logo, which will be used for both the Olympic and Paralympic Games, will convey the right message for the Games.
"It won't be to be everybody's taste immediately, but it's a brand that we genuinely believe can be hard working... and reach out and engage young people, which is our challenge is over the next five years," he told BBC Sport.
"It's not a logo, it's a brand that will take us forward for the next five years."
Organisers hope the brand will boost the marketing push to raise £2bn to stage the Games and convey the message that London 2012 will be "Everyone's Games". wahey... what makes them believe young people will like it? XD and why does the "different era" have to come with an ugly logo? XD

| Yeah...2012 isn't that far away, and a lot of the people viewing it as ugly now will still view it as ugly then.
I just can't believe 400 grand was spent on it!

pshh I s'pose nobody will scold me for bashing it XD

It's ugly, and supposed to read 2012.... (Yeah, HOW?) It's jagged, and don't see how it appeals to the youth generation or whatever it is they said. Above all.... what does it represent about London?? Oh, lookie at us, we can spend £400k on a stupid jagged-looking piece of... badness. XD
The ones that people sent in.... the one with the most votes? I voted for that one, because it just looks SO MUCH BETTER.

| Hmm. At first glance I hated it, but then...OK, at second glance I hated it too.
The colors are just...WRONG. And it's a little too jaggedy. And no way worth nearly a million dollars. That's just sad. No logo can be worth that much money. If they changed the colors it might be ok, though...still not great, but OK.

So i said no i mean its not exactly my dream to go into the olympics so there would be no point it would mean making Judo my life and its just a hobby. But back to the Logo i think some of the people on this site could have done better than that.

| I personally think it is completely ugly. I understand that they are trying to appeal to the younger generation, but even the feedback from children is of disgust. There is another 'London' logo with 2012 incorperated in it. (I can't find the exact one) but I though it was much better | |

| It looks like they spent hundreds of thousands of dollars to hand a crash pink crayon to a two year old and told her to write the number 2012. How on earth was it that expensive to write and ugly 2012? Who couldn't have done that for a dollar? The first one on the link actually incorporates the rings, which is nice. What on earth do big pink numbers have to do with the olympics? | |
