| Jumping Jellybeans!
A nice, fun assignment this time. We all love sweets, candy, chocolate, the like, I’m sure.
The first part of your job this time is to research what you think are the three most famous Muggle sweets, candies and chocolates (three of each), and say why you personally think that they are so popular.
Part one will be worth a maximum of 50 marks.
The second part of this task is for you to say something you would change about three of these sweets/candies/chocolates, in order to make it a wizarding type of food. What would happen if you ate it? Would there be any added ingredients to spice it up?
Part two is also worth a maximum of 50 marks.
Good luck, and I don’t know if this is necessary, but don’t forget to cite your sources! Lol!

Pop Rocks- Pop rocks were developed in 1956 by William A. Mitchell. They were put on the market in 1875. Pop rocks get their snappy “attitude” from the tiny air pockets containing carbonation. The C02 is released when melted in you mouth. This produces the crackling and popping sensation. The Pop Rocks created quite a controversy, though. There were hotlines set up; just so parents could call in to make sure that the pop rocks were safe to give to their kids. Personally, I think Pop Rocks are popular, because of the illusion that they produce. First of all, they are yummy. Second, they are fun to eat. Third of all, the popping and sizzling on your tongue makes Pop Rocks more noticeable than a regular candy treat. And if you have ever tried Pop Rocks and Coke, you know what it REALLY feels like. Milk Chocolate- Milk Chocolate made its debut in “Charlie and the Chocolate Factory.” This yummy treat was created in the 1900s by Milton S. Hershey. For over 100 years, people all over the world have been enjoying Hershey chocolate. I think that chocolate has become to popular, because of the delicious taste, and addicting smooth chocolaty pieces. You can’t eat just one piece of chocolate. It’s impossible! The new chocolates, such as Almond Hershey, Marshmallow Hershey, and others, have made chocolate even more popular. Toffee- Toffee was a world wide hit when it first hit the market. Originally only bought in one type, the toffee soon was known all around the world. Eventually, Butterscotch Toffee, Mint Toffee, and other types of Toffee developed. I think that Toffee has been so popular, because of the soft, chewy feel you get when you eat it, not to mention the absolutely delicious taste! | Section One Sweets: Bassetts Liquorice Allsorts Liquorice allsorts are made by Bassetts, and were first created in 1899. Advertised by Bertie Bassett, they have long been a favourite sweet. With different types of liquorice sweet in a packet, I believe they have remained popular due to their variety, and their advertising campaigns. Maynards Wine Gums Wine Gums are another popular Muggle sweet. They are made by Maynards, and are different shaped and flavoured jelly sweets, with the name of different types of alcohol written on them (eg. Port). They are popular, firstly because of the taste, and also I believe the texture. The texture of a wine gum is very different to that of other gummy sweets. Skittles Skittles are also extremely popular, with adults and children alike. Skittles are small, chewy, fruity sweets, and come in two types: fruit and sour. The advertising campaign for Skittles has varied over the years, but the most recent slogan has been “taste the rainbow”. I think Skittles have remained so popular because there is nothing else like them on the market, and they are good value for money – you get a lot of skittles in a packet which costs approximately 40p. Chocolate: Cadbury Dairy Milk Undoubtedly the King of Chocolate is this, Cadbury Dairy Milk. Cadburys (based in Bournville, Birmingham) have been making chocolate since 1824, when John Cadbury opened his first shop. Although Cadbury create many different types of chocolate bars (e.g. Twirl, Flake, Time Out, Buttons, Crunchie, Creme Egg, Double Decker, Picnic, Milk Tray…the list goes on), Dairy Milk is what the company are most famous for. With a glass and a half of milk in every bar, it’s distinctive purple packaging and its fantastic taste, Dairy Milk is the top selling chocolate brand in the UK. Dairy Milk is one of the oldest, most popular chocolates, and I believe much of its popularity stems from the taste. Nothing is better than a bar of Dairy Milk with a glass of cold milk...perhaps watching Coronation Street, which Cadbury is the sponsor of! Galaxy Galaxy is, perhaps, the second best chocolate. Galaxy chocolate is creamier than Dairy Milk, and their long running advertising campaign slogan has been “Why have cotton, when you can have silk?”, making reference to the fact that the texture of Galaxy is silky. The chocolate melts in your mouth, and the brand has branched out into several different products, for example, Galaxy Minstrels and Galaxy Swirls. I think Galaxy is so popular because it is the main rival to Cadburys Dairy Milk, and because of the unusual (but tasty) texture. Mars Bar The humble Mars bar is one of the most popular in the UK. Consisting of a layer of soft nougat, topped with caramel and coated in milk chocolate, the Mars bar has been a favourite for many years. With the advertising slogan “A Mars a day, helps you work, rest and play,” Mars bars are as popular now as they have ever been. I think they are so popular, because they taste nice, and they are unique in their style. Also, interesting ‘dishes’ have been created, in the North of England, I believe deep fried, battered Mars bar is a speciality in chip shops. Candy: Drumstick Lollies Drumstick Lollies are a childhood favourite. Made by Swizzels Matlow, they are a chewy sweet on a stick. They are called Drumstick Lollies, due to their shape. I believe Drumstick Lollies are so popular, because they have a unique taste and consistency. However – you have to be careful when eating them – they fall off the stick quite easily! Double Lollies Double Lollies are also made by Swizzels Matlow. They are round in shape, and usually consist of two-colours. It is hard to describe a double lolly, perhaps the best way would be to say that they are sort of like compacted sherbert. I have always loved double lollies, because nothing else tastes like them, and I believe this is a contributing factor to their popularity. Rainbow Drops Again created by Swizzels Matlow, Rainbow Drops are a favourite of many. They are coloured puffs of rice, a little like Rice Krispies. I think they are so popular, again, because there is no equivalent on the market, they taste good and are good value for money. Section Two Skittles: I would alter Skittles, so that when you eat a particular flavour, you turn that colour. For example, if you ate a red skittle you would turn red, if you ate a yellow one, you would turn purple. The effects would be temporary, and would change every time you ate a different colour. The advertising slogan would be changed from “Taste the Rainbow”, to “Look like the Rainbow.” Drumstick Lollies: To alter Drumstick Lollies, I would dip them in a ‘noise’ potion, which means that when they are eaten, the consumer will hear a drum solo in their ears. Perhaps the Drumstick Lollies could become the magical equivalent of an i-pod? Galaxy: Galaxy promote a feeling of luxury in their chocolate, and so I would incorporate this into the magical side of things. One bite of Galaxy chocolate, and your surroundings instantly alter…your clothing becomes sheer luxury, your bedroom or lounge becomes like that of a Princess. | Candies:
TWIZZLERS Sourz: Its and assorted flavours of bite-sized Twizzler’s candy with a sour coating. It has different flavours and are very chewy. Twizzler’s candy, is one of the oldest confectionery firms within the United States. The twizzler’s company was established in 1845 by Young and Smylie.
Other kinds of Twizzler’s * TWIZZLERS PULL-N-PEEL * TWIZZLERS TWERPZ * TWIZZLERS STRAWZ
Lotsa Fizz: This candy is so awesome. When it is placed in your mouth it starts to fizz. These candies have been around for a really long time. Its like a hard candy with fizzy stuff in the middle. They come in three kinds of flavours- red, orange and grape. The packaging is kind of cool too. Even though the package come in red, purple or orange colours, don’t let that fool you. The candy isn’t always the same colour as the package says. So its like a surprise.
Shock Tarts: These are a really hard candy that kind of has a soft inside. The inside is sour with a shocking zing. Of course shock tarts look exactly like sweet tarts only sour instead of sweet. They also come in a wide variety of colours and favours.
Chocolate:
HERSHEY'S KISSES: Are such a chocolaty treat. I remember giving it to family members as a special kiss. Its kind of a chocolaty triangle that pure chocolate. Its small but come by will a big message.
Other kinds of Kisses: * Milk Chocolate * Milk Chocolate with Almonds (my favourite) * Rich Dark Chocolate * Filled with Caramel (my dads favourite) * Hugs Chocolates * Filled with Dules de Leche.
HERSHEY’S KISSABLES: This is a new version of Hershey’s kisses. This is such an awesome chocolate treat. Its chocolate covered in a new candy shell. All the shells are different colours, but the chocolate is all the same.. Mmmmmmm
KIT KAT This chocolate covered wafer is my favourite. I love how chocolate fits perfectly together with wafer. MM.. its so good. You get 4 bars to a package.
Sweets:
REESE'S PIECES: This is my favorite sweet. Its not really chocolate or candy but its just perfect. I completely love peanut butter and would die for these. I love how the shell crushes beneath my teeth and the peanut butter filling comes out..mmm so good.
JELLY BEANS: Jelly beans are my moms favourite kind of sweet. She could eat these all day long. They are kind of well jelly that looks like beans..lol
PEPPERMINT PATTIES: I love these too. They give you mouth a fresh breath with a chocolaty taste. It has chocolate on the outside and mint on the inside.
Part Two:
Shock Tarts: I would want the shock tarts to actually shock you. Of course muggles wouldn’t be able to master how to get the best shock, but to the wizarding world there is going to be young wizards shocking there friends.
Kit Kat: I would want it to transform young wizards and witching into Kats. Not everyday normal cats, just their face would transform. This would be awesome during Halloween.
Jelly Beans: I would want them to be like a jumping bean that would cause children to jump high amounts in the air. There would be no need to have a broom with Jelly Beans,
~*Christina*~

| Part 1
Sweets
Skittles:
Skittles come in two different flavours: sweet and sour. Skittles are small chewy sweets that release small bursts of juice, which really tantalise your taste buds. They have a thin hard shell on the outside, which can be broken to get to the real taste. They are so popular because they are small, easy to eat, and very cheap. They can be shared, eaten one by one, eaten a few at a time, etc. Children enjoy these because they are so colourful and they enjoy picking their favourite flavours and colours.
Chocolate Éclairs:
At first glance, these would probably fall into the chocolate category, but these are actually small bits of toffee that have an inside of chocolate. I think they are popular because when you suck them or chew them, then it is very surprising to get a lovely taste of chocolate right in the middle and children just love it (I know I do!).
Strawberries:
Yes, this may be a fruit but it is also a sweetie! They are sold extremely cheaply in ice-cream vans. They are small, strawberry flavoured chewy sweets that are popular amongst school children because they are a small snack between the end of school and home. They also taste tantalisingly sweet, therefore appealing to sweet teeth everywhere.
Candies:
Lollypops:
These little candy pieces on sticks are the probably the most popular candy mainly because they are so fun to eat. They can come in all different flavours and the taste lasts for a long time. This is mainly because they are so hard to bite but this is a good thing because of the juices the sucking releases.
Pear Drops:
These little sweets are also much like lollypops, although they seem to be harder and without sticks. They are a traditional candy sweet that normally has a slight bit of sulphur in them. They too release the juice very slowly and normally taste of either lemon/lime of pear/apple, though some can come in different colours as well.
Werther’s Originals:
These are a traditional candy made from butter, fudge, caramel and sugar. They are also hard, as all candies are. They release a distinguished fudge or caramel taste that lingers in the mouth for a long time. I think that they are popular because of the unique taste that they have and also because they are so rich and delicious. They are good quality candies, so naturally, they are slightly more expensive, but they also taste twice as good!
Chocolates:
Milk Chocolate:
This is a classic chocolate that is a favourite with everybody because of the pure simplicity of it. There are several chocolate bars that are pure chocolate but still sell the same. Examples are: Yorkie, Galaxy, Cadbury, Aero, Freddo’s, Flake, Nestle, Minstrels, and others.
Kit Kats:
Kit Kats are tasty little sticks of crispy wafers that are covered in a layer of milk chocolate. They come in packs of two or four. Lately, they are also available in other flavours such as nutty, orange, tiramisu (special edition). They can also be bought in chunky sizes, which are fun to eat. They are good for sharing and are not too ‘childish’ for adults to eat, and aren’t bad tasting for children to eat either.
Crème Eggs:
These are medium sized chocolate egg shapes that are filled with a sweet, gooey crème-y substance that looks exactly like the yolk and white of a real egg. Media and TV adverts have advertised it as a diverse kind of chocolate that can be eaten in any way – “How do YOU eat yours?” It is fun for kids to eat because it is so sickly sweet and so messy. But it is also fun to eat if you dip hot chunky chips into the crème. Disgusting as it may sound altogether, The Crème Egg is extremely popular, especially around Easter time.
Part 2
Magical Sweets!
Exploding Éclairs:
These are the same as Chocolate Éclairs, but as you suck on the toffee of these, or even if you chew them, there is a surprise waiting for you. Instead of getting smaller, they get slowly bigger until they fill you entire mouth. Just as it is getting too big to fit in your mouth anymore, they go “POP!” and leave you with a smooth, sweet taste of just the chocolate centre in your mouth. Perfect for pranking at parties!
Butterbeer Originals:
These are slight modifications to Werther’s originals. When you suck on these candies, they release the same taste and warm feeling that Butterbeer does. Also when you suck on them, when they reach half their size, the give you a quick blast of coldness in your mouth, the opposite of Butterbeer and then return to their original warm taste, making you appreciate the taste even more!
Eggy Effervescence:
These have the same tastes and consistencies as normal Crème Eggs. However, as each little bit of the chocolate coating is eaten, the crème in the centre of the egg suddenly bubbles up with proportionate concentration to the size of the bite. Sometimes it can overflow, or sometimes, it can just touch the tip of your nose! It is a lot of fun for young children and can also result in many competitions and what not to see who can try not to have their nose cremed!
