| The Number Seven in Harry Potter The Number Seven consistently plays a role in the Harry Potter books. There are several glaring instances of the number seven, and a lot of smaller things (one could call them insignificant). The number seven has always been associated with magic. It has been called a lucky number. It is easy to see the lure of the number for JK Rowling in the books. To begin with, there are seven books in the series, equating to seven years at Hogwarts. There are seven Weasley children; Ginny is the seventh and only girl in the family to be born in seven generations. Hogwarts castle has seven floors, seven secret passageways. Voldemort has created seven horcruxes (for the precise reason that seven is a number with magical properties). The list goes on. One could say that these are coincidences, that they have no bearing on the outcome of the book. I beg to differ. I believe that the number seven plays a large role in the book. It appears too many times to be purely happenstance, and I believe it will be important in the final (seventh) book of the series. I shall look at the idea of Ginny Weasley as the seventh child and only girl further. There have been many legends surrounding the seventh child, for example, “The Legend states the 'Seventh Son of a Seventh Son' is the unborn one in the poetic sense, 'He' being preordained by his birthright too be a 'Maker of Things' endowed with gifts of 'second sight' 'predicting the future' 'healer' 'lucky' and a 'devil may care attitude' being referred to as the 'Divine One' or the 'Chosen One' who has a 'special purpose in life' for the 'Lord of Hosts' who is also cursed by the good & evil forces battling for his eternal soul.” It cannot be coincidence that Ginny is the seventh and only girl. Have we yet to see the full scope of her powers? I believe so. I also believe that the seventh book will contain many more references to the magical number.
