| Please note that the skirt below I actually did make it. And the girl I am using in the pictures is my Step Sister Amy.
Outfit I am wearing:
As I sat in the Talent X hall in my dressing room my heart pounded in my chest. It was a huge arena, with many different stages where each act would be performing. Pulling the list of all acts and when the would be shown I saw mine. Material Make-over by Polly in hall 6. At 3pm. That was a good time I had been told. Just after the whole lunch rush so many people will be looking for somewhere to go. It was not 2:30pm and I had not a bite to eat. I did not have the stomach for food.
Looking down Polly saw that she was still in the clothes that she had thrown on this morning. A pare of pale grey jeans and a black top that said Rock Goddess on the front. Quickly pulling them of Polly walked over to the rack with the outfits on. Pulling a few of them down she held them towards her body walking back and too towards the mirror until she finally found an outfit she was satisfied with. As hall 6 was decorated in purple Polly had decided upon being colour co-ordinated with the area of which she was performing in. She was extremely happy with the outfit she had chosen. A purple puffy out skirt with little pale purple flowers running across it. The top was a paler purple than that of the skirt and with no sleeves, it was tight to her body at the bottom but was loose yet fitted at the top.
With her clothes sorted Polly turned towards the rack of shoes, which now had discarded clothes strewn upon them. Moving them of Polly fumbled threw them all. There were so many shoes it was like a girls heaven. Pale pink shoes with large heels to dainty green pixie boots. Moving towards the row that was full of black shoes Polly pulled 3 pairs towards her. Trying one on she began to walk around the room to see how they felt. Although they were beautiful the shoes did not have any strap to go around her ankles so kicking them of she brought some more towards her. Sensible shoes. With a safety strap to go around your ankles and large squishy padding. Placing her small foot inside them she saw the familiar clarks symbol and knew at one that they would be comfy shoes. Walking to the mirror she saw that these shoes did happen to go with her outfit but not all certain they were show-biz she turned to the 3rd pair that were on the floor. They had a small heel and a large amount of string to go up your leg. Tying them around her she was careful to make sure that the knot would be at the back of her legs. Walking towards the mirror she knew that they were the perfect shoes for what she was about to do. They were not the most comfy pair of shoes she had worn but they went with her outfit perfectly.
‘And now to the hair.’ Polly muttered to herself as she plonked her bottom down on the chair in front of the dressing table. Turning her GHD straightness on Polly flicked through a hair and beauty magazine circling the styles that she liked whilst she waited for the straightness to warm up. Polly automatically did her usual style of straightening the hair around her face. Looking up into the mirror she saw that she despised her usual hair style and technique. With the fine clothes she was wearing now her hair just looked so out of place. Pulling the magazine towards her Polly began to try and curl her hair but as she pulled the strengtheners down she saw that they had fallen into a loose wave. With an exasperated sigh she tried helplessly to do something with her hair as the front bit of her hair fell down loosely near her eyes. Pulling a pale blue head band from out of her bag Polly placed it into her hair. Walking over to the mirror she smiled at her reflection. As she moved from side to side her fringe fell over her eyes and Polly was seen pushing it back from her face. ‘Grrr’ she cried as she walked to the dressing table placing her head in her hands defeated. ‘Are you almost ready miss its 10 minutes until you have to go out?’ A smart looking women stood in front. ‘Um yes I won’t be long.’ She lied as she looked at her hair which by now had started to frizz. ‘Excellent, I will come and get you at 3pm.’
As Polly looked into the mirror panic stricken she helplessly flicked through the magazine. Giving up on that she resolved to just straighten my hair. But as she had almost done she saw a small hair grip on the desk. Sliding it into her hair Polly’s spirits lifted. ‘Pretty yet practical.’ She said to herself smiling widely. Placing her mothers heart necklace around her neck Polly smile widened ever more. Even though the hair grip was the wrong colour it did not matter. Appling some eye liner Polly pulled on her glasses and walked to the mirror. Trying to practise what would be her opening line.
‘Hello everyone and welcome to Hall 6.’ The crowd then roared in response to the women on the microphone and I knew that it was time for me to walk out in a minute. Frantically I ran to my bag tipping everything out in my rush to find my lip gloss. As I had applied the last of my stroke I heard the lady cry. ‘And here is your host.’ With that I left the messy dressing room which I knew I would have to clean up later and bade my way out onto the stage. My sewing machine sat there in all its glory. The crowd looked up at me expectantly and I knew that I would have to entertain all these people for an hour. O my gosh what if people start booing me and leave. Panic stricken I walked up to the microphone. ‘Hey everyone are you have fun?’ I asked to hear a load chorus of ‘yes’ boom back at me. ‘So welcome to Hall 6 and your all hear for Material Make-over. My aim in this next hour is to not only entertain you fine people but to give one of you a whole new make-over and for you to step back into the 70’s.’ The crowd was still all watching and waiting for something to happen. A few children fidgeted and there mothers tried to quite them so they could watch the show.
‘So do we have any volunteers.’ There were not many hands that rose but there was one girl with brown/blonde hair who was sat on the edge of the 5th row. Taking a cautious step down the large purple step I walked over to her my microphone in hand. ‘So whats your name then?’ Polly asked placed the microphone towards her face. ‘Amy’ she replied giving me a cold stare. ‘Lets give it up for our brave volunteer Amy!’ She cried down the microphone hoping to make the place more lively. The girl named Amy followed me up onto the stage. Her hair was tied back into a scruffy pony and she was wearing dark blue tracksuit bottoms and a large Reebok hoodie. Smiling at my volunteer. I said ‘Pose for the camera.’
Which was the cue for my camera man named Colin to take a picture. As the flash of the camera went of and peoples faces turned towards him. I brought there attention back to me as Emma in the back turned on the music. Kate Bush – Wuthering Heights. Played softly in the back ground. Moving towards the box Polly pulled out a few bits of fabric. ‘Now this is where you lot come in’ She said to the audience hoping against hope that no-one was losing interest. If they were hopefully they would wait until she was really getting started before they decided that they hated her performance. ‘Now which fabric do you think we should use.’ Polly asked the audience as she held up three different choices all with a number on them. ‘Fabric one.’ Which was a pale blue one with orange swirls running through it. ‘Fabric two.’ This one was a white piece with small green spots splattered across it. ‘Or Fabric three’. The last fabric was bright orange with little yellow spots on. ‘Cheer for the one you want.’ Polly was hoping that they would choose the first one which happened to be the easiest to work with. But as most things work out the crowd cheered for the second fabric. The white piece with green spots on it. ‘Fabric two it is then.’ Walking over to the box Polly pulled out a huge sheet of the fabric. And placed it on the floor for the crowd to see. Moving over to the volunteer, Amy she began to take her measurements. Stealing a quick glance at her watch Polly saw that 20 minutes of her time had already been used up. Only 40 minutes left. ‘Shoot’ she thought as she smiled at the audience and read the measurements of Amy of to them all.
Moving the large purple chair towards Amy. ‘Take a sheat.’ She replied with what she hoped was a friendly smile, but Polly was nervous now. All eyes were upon her and she was sweating which was never good for working on clothes. Breathing deeply, Polly told herself. You hear now your at the final performance, you must have done something right. but none of that helped as she heard some people sigh in the audience. Quickly fastening the buttons to the back of the skirt Polly held it up for the audience to see. ‘ Now what I need you guys to do is chose and under layer.
‘Polly held up 3 new choices.’ A pink one, an orange one and a green one. Looking at the first half of the skirt Polly thought that the audience would go with colour co-ordination like she had tried to with her outfit at the area.
With the fabrics in hand Polly walked around until she came towards the back to a young women with a perm. ‘Would you like to chose the under layer mam.’ I asked, she looked embarrassed and to Polly it seemed that she was going to refuse her offer but what would appear her daughter held her arm out and pointed to the orange one. ‘The orange one is it?’ Polly asked the young girl with long honey coloured blonde hair. ‘Yes’ smiling at her Polly walked back towards the stage showing everyone the fabric she had chosen. Glancing at the clock she saw she had 25 minutes left.
‘Blast’ Polly muttered to herself. Quickly cutting the fabric to the right size and attaching it to the first half of the skirt. I held it up high for all eyes to see. ‘And here is the skirt made in under half an hour. But were not finished yet. No I need each of you from the audience to pass down some things to the front which we can use for Amy’s make over. All things will be returned to there rightful owners.
A small selection of things were passed down to the front. A few plane tops a cardigan and some hair pieces. Placing the assortment in front of me and the audience I pulled out a plane white top.
‘And whose top is this?’ I asked as I held it up. A girl at the front dressed in the latest trend held her hand up so that a jingle could be heard from her jewellery. I placed the top upon the skirt and smiled at the effect that small things thrown together can make. Pulling a gold and burgundy cardigan out of the pile I held it against Amy who now looked quite bored at being left to sit on a large purple chair in front of an audience that were not hers. ‘And whom does this belong to.’ An man this time with a small girl who would be assumed to be his daughter put his hand up. ‘My wife always brings spare things.’ He said to me making sure that his daughter was comfy on the chair. Though they obviously wouldn’t be as they were hard and plastic. But again they were purple and they matched the whole of the room. ‘And last but not least who does this headband belong to?’ A middle aged women raised her hand at this and smiled at me like she knew what she was going through. Her mouth was dry and she was in desperate need of a drink but Polly only had 15 minutes left. ‘Thank you everyone who has volunteered some clothes but unfortunately they will not be needed.’
Some people moved forward and Polly took Amy to a small enclosed area and asked her to change into the clothes. More music was now playing through in the back ground. And she tried to breath properly. Moving into the area she quickly did Amy’s hair and make-up. With only 5 minutes to go. Polly stepped out of the enclosed curtain and said.
‘Amy has changed from this.’ A large picture came up from behind me as some of the technical crew were working hard behind me.
‘To this’ And Polly pulled the curtain away to revel Amy in the outfit she had made and put together.
The crowd applauded her and Polly felt tears come up behind my eyes. I will not embarrasses myself in front of all these people. She told herself.
‘Thank you all for coming her to watch my performance and if I have used any of your items please stay behind to collect them. And don’t forget to vote for Polly in talent x!’ She screamed the last bit as people began to make there way out of the room.
After it was all over Polly breathed deeply as sue made her way into the untidy dressing room. Pulling things of the floor she began to tidy up. It was now 4pm and the last hour had gone really quickly. And she had nothing to show for it as she had let the volunteer Amy keep the skirt she had made.
