The Loch Ness Mystery

Nearly 1000 feet deep and 24 miles long, Scotland's Loch Ness is believed by many to be the home to the unidentified water creature tenderly nicknamed "Nessie."

The mystery of this Loch Ness Monster can not be directly pinpointed to a certain year of when it came to light, yet studies show that the larger population of the public first became aware of the ‘monster’ in 1933, sparking a world wide obsession with finding out the truth of the legend. No other monster is as tied in with a country's image as Nessie is with Scotland. Nessie has been featured in hundreds of newspaper and magazine articles, dozens of books and featured in plenty of cinematic films. She is arguably the best known crypto-zoological creature in the world.

Despite many believable eyewitness sightings, Nessie has never been caught, even after countless attempts in the respective lake. No carcasses have ever been found that might be anything other than recognizable animals. It is a fact that giant nets, submarines, underwater cameras, sonar, and loch-side crews of observers have all failed to come up with the solid evidence that will prove to the world that there is a Loch Ness Monster.

There have been many stories and myths that surround the existence of Nessie, including one dating right back to the beginning. The Irish monk who converted most of Scotland to Christianity in the 6th century, apparently converted Nessie, too; for it is said that until he went out on the waters and soothed the beast, she had been a murderess. A more modern story focuses upon Dr. Robert Kenneth Wilson, a London physician, who allegedly photographed a plesiosaur-like beast with a long neck emerging out of the murky waters. Much money has been spent upon discovering whether or not this photo is a fake, but right up until this day, no one is totally sure.

So is the legend of Nessie simply a great prank that has moved the minds of many a normal person? Perhaps this is one of those myths and legends that was never meant to be proven either way. In the end, it is the believers that continue to drive this legend. Real or fake, it is a legend that will live forever.
