Food

I've been reading through the books lately and I've noticed that in Transfiguration, Professor McGonagall, teaches them to turn things into animal. Cedric Diggory was able to turn a rock into a dog. In the seventh book, the trio are on the run and have no food and according to Hermione you can't just make food appear... so why couldn't they have just turned something into a chicken or another animal? There might be the fact they don't want to kill an animal but they didn't mind catching fish...

good point. i didn't catch that. but you're right, they could have done something for food.

Actually, the couldn't have. It's one of the 5 things you can't transfigurate. You can't change a toadstool into a fish, same with money. However if they had a fish they could make it bigger...

We understand that, but why didn't they transfigure something into a chicken (a live one) and kill it to eat it?

Rachel brings up what I would have said. It wouldn't last forever. That's why Hermione tried to tyransfigure mushrooms.. they're edible - just not tasty so they can transfigure it to something tasty so when it turns back at least it's still edible.

In the forth book, Mrs Weasley makes a "creamy sauce." come out the end of her wand, so obviously, some foods are possible to produce.
