| Welcome to the first general debate of the new semester!
Sign up below to take part. The debate will begin once we have two people from every house signed up . As I will only be taking the first two from every house to sign up, please make sure this is something you are going to make the time to do.
Topic: Should the Tales of Beedles the Bard be mass produced?
As we all know, only a very few limited copies are now available. The debate will focus on whether or not it should remain at the limited number of prints, or if it should be mass produced and available to the general public.

| General Debate: Tales of Beedles the Bard
The tales of beedles the bard was a way for J.K.R. to say thank you to the people that had really helped her to have Harry Potter published. If the book was mass produced and sold all around the world how would it be a special gift? It is understandable that fans like us want to read the book but that’s J.K.R. gift to her friends.
There was also a chance to buy one of the books at auction and the money she used there went to the charity. To mass produce the book would be entirely up to J.K.R. she of course would make lots of money from it as every Harry Potter fan in the world would want to buy a copy. But creating the Tales of Beedles the Bard was not a money making scheme. It was a way of saying thank you. If you have ever created something for someone say a bracelet and later see that some other people have copied the design, the gift that you gave to that person doesn’t seem special any more. The people who received this book, all apart from the 7th person are special people to J.K.R. We also must be thankful to them as without those people whom J.K.R. gave the book to we ourselves would never have had the Harry Potter books. We must be thankful to them and in a way this is a gift from the fans too. Each Harry Potter fan would like to get their hands on a copy of this book yet we have accepted the fact that it is theirs to keep something they will enjoy and experience and we will envy them for it.
It could be debatable that it is sort of a tease from J.K.R. many people feel that it would have been better to keep the fact that she has created another book a secret. But if that was so how was she supposed to make the 7th book sold at auction. And the money raised from it.
Another reason I feel it should not be massed produced is that there is more to loose from it than gain. We will loose the fact that we know no more of the great story of Harry Potter can ever be read again. And nor will we experience the midnight madness. But is it only our love for Harry Potter and curiosity that makes us want to read this book. It is not about Harry, Ron, Hermione or any of our other favourite characters but about someone completely random. Someone whom we only briefly read about. Of course it would be nice to read it but this book would never be as big as the Harry Potter series and nor would we love it as much. It would be great to read the book but it would also steal the fact that it was a special gift away from those that received it.
Personally if the book was not made as a special gift with as much thought and care in it I would want to own it. But because it was a gift I don’t feel it should be massed produced.

I think that Tales of Beedle the Bard should not be mass produced. The whole idea of having them was to say thank - you to some very speical people in J.K.R.'s life and I think it wouldn't be fair to them if it was mass produced no matter how much I want to read them. We are all of the understanding that Amzaon bought the book and they don't have publishing rights, therefore they can't see for themselves. However, I do think they have thought up a creative, and inovative way to allow the fans to read them. They are talking baout thaking the book ontour and allowing fans to see and possibly read it. I think this would be a wonderful solution that gets around all the sticky legal agreements.

I feel to mass produce, as Polly has so correctly said, a gift, would be just disrespectful to JKR's friends.
How would you yourself feel, to be told "I love and respect you so much for all your hard work and friendship that i am giving you this gift, the Tales of Beedles the Bard, and only you and six other people will ever be given this." Only for it to be mass produced like any other Potter book?
Doing that would take away the sincerity (is that the right word?) of the gift.
I know we'd all love to read the book but if it means taking the joy out of a full hearted gift, id much rather hand over the House Cup to Slytherin and bow down and declare Rai is the king of kings and one true ruler of this planet....that will never happen by the way xD
The book was a gift to six friends of JKR, and the 7th was auctioned for charity, a well deserving cause in my opinion, if JKR had wanted us all to read the tales, then she would have given it to her publishers and said "here" instead she gave it to those who felt truly deserved it.
Im not trying to say that we as fans do not deserve this book, what i'm saying is, the people she gave it to, did so much more for her then we can ever dream of doing. It was a wonderful way of showing her respect and loyalty and love to her friends and i for one would not wish to be a part of something which meant taking that gesture away from her.

Yes it was a gift. But what about those Harry potter fans that coulnt afford to pay thousands of dollars at an auction, those who arent good friends of J.K Rowling but that wish to complete their understanding of the magical world J.K has created? Should they miss out on somting so treasured just because of the above reasons? How is that fair? To make sure the gift to those she treasures remains special she could sign their books, or even the fact that they were some of the first people allowed to lay eyes on this precious book would be enough. But the question remains: Why should the ordinary yet loyal fans miss out?

Urgh in answer to your question "why should ordinary loyal fans miss out?" well the answer is simple, are you a fan or Beadle and the Bard? Or of Harry Potter?
That is the difference here, its not about Harry Potter and his friends and his escape from the hands of death/losing a loved one etc, its about something different, what you really want is something else by JKR, and im sorry but you're not a loyal friend who has stood by JKR from the beginning. the books took 10 years to write and lots of tears along the way, you would have been, about 4 when they started, so you cant possibly say you were there from the beginning.
I myself read the first book when i was your age, 14, i don't for a second say i have been loyal to JKR since the beginning, thats just like being a Harmione shipper, i adore the Potter books, but having never read anything else of JKR i can not say i am dedicated follower of the author herself, simply the books, like everyone else.
That is why the tales of beadles the bard are so precious, because they were given to those who have stood by JKR nothing but support from the beginning of pen to paper to the final tear. To reproduce the tales of beedles of the bard is not only an insult to friendship but also to JKR herself, what a nice way to slap an author in the face by going against her wishes.

Some part of me wish it was mass produnce, but her friends desevre it more then regular peolpe like us. yes we may have rooted her on, but we were not there when she got a divorced like her friends where and we may have cheered her on to write books we craved, but who do you think told her to follow what she wanted and beleived, not us. We didnt know anything about her until the first book, but her friends did and that book was her way of saying thank you. Why should peolpe, who did nothing to help her what so ever, desevre to read that boo?. For all we know, it could be boring and not that good, even though it sounded good in the Harry Potter book. it would also be very rude for her friends to publish that book. When she was sued for using the word 'muggle' her friends where there adn helped her. So, all in all, we did nothing but made her rich adn in return she wrote us those books. we dont desevre that other book though.

I agree with what all of the other con people have said and would like to add, that as a Harry Potter fan who can't afford to buy it at an auction, I am happy with who got it. Amazon has already set up a contest to have a fan go and read the book and said that they will take it on a tour. Her friends would feel jipped if everyone got to own something so special and personal and I think we should try to imagine being in their shoes. So I don't think ordinary and loyal fans are missing out because I think that in time, we can all expeirence it in out own ways.
