To complete this badge you must do the following;

1. Interview 2 members on HE who are from different countries to yourself. Ask them 10-15 questions each to find out a bit about them and their country and how they feel about it. Post both interview answers here with the username to who you interviewed and where they come from

2. Write a letter as if to a penfriend who lives in another country telling them about your country and how you feel about it. Make sure it is between 400-500 words

PostSubject: Re: World Membership Badge   World Membership Badge EmptySun Jul 13 2008, 16:22

For this badge I interviewed Herby and Cris! I wanted to have somebody from just a few hours away from me, and another across an ocean :D

1. Where are you from?
Herby: Canada (Ontario)
Cris: Romania - more exactly, the capital, Bucharest.

2. What language/s do you speak?
Herby: English and French
Cris: Romanian, German, English, French, Polish (and understand bits and pieces of Spanish, but I haven't spoken it in years >.<)

3. Do you have any holidays different from the US?
Herby: We have Good Friday, Canada Day and Labour Day. The newest holiday is Family Day, this just took place this year.
Cris: Well - do you have St. Nicholas' day (6th of December) in the US? Hmm... but you guys surely don't have what we call "Martisor"! Oh and from talking to you earlier, I also remember you didn't know about 1st of June, International Children's Day, hmmm? :D

4. If so, would you like to share a tradition that goes along with it?
Herby: Good Friday acknowledges the crucifixion of Jesus Christ. And is the Friday before Easter. In Quebec, employers must give either Good Friday or Easter Monday as a statutory holiday.
Cris: I'll tell you about "Martisor"! It's celebrated on the 1st of March, to symbolically welcome spring. On this day, small brooches bound with a red-and-white lace are given to girls and women and are worn on the front of their clothes. These brooches can be anything, whether precious or not and there is a real mania to buy them before the 1st of March - the whole business is unfortunately slightly turning kitschy lately, but it's still a holiday we celebrate with joy. Actually, I think the holiday was originally celebrated only by giving the red-and-white lace, that symbolises - I hope I remember well - life and .... purity?

5. Do you like living there?
Herby: Yes, I enjoy the fact that its so naturally warm and I wouldn't want to live anywhere else!
Cris: Well - I haven't lived there the last three years, since I've moved to Poland, but I surely miss Romania, with all its imperfections and crazy people. :D But while I still was there, I lived a happy, careless life and just felt at home - a feeling I can't say Poland doesn't give me, but it's not the same.

6. If there was one thing you could change about your country, what would it be?
Herby: I'd say the joining of the Americans to Canada. This way we could be one larger family and a more integrated community that will work together.
Cris: The unseriousness/carelessness of the people - okay, maybe it's a bit of a Latin-spirit thing, but sometimes people overdo it. Like, where else do problems like corruption and dirty streets arise from? If everyone knew what their job is and was ready to do it properly, we would all be living a happier, cleaner, much more stress-free life.

7. What’s one thing that you would never change?
Herby: Freedom and Health Care.
Cris: Again something relating to the people - the hospitality. Just go into any Romanian home and you'll get so stuffed with whatever your host has best to offer, that you'll be longing to come back again in no time! Okay, so you might get slightly annoyed when people like my dad insist you take another serving for at least five times even if you tell them you couldn't eat another crumb of bread, but it just shows that we Romanians just want you to feel welcome! World Membership Badge 436937

8. What’s the weather like?
Herby: Well, Summer is pretty much warmish. Normally high of 70°C. And winter time can be below 0°C, it maybe cool, but its awesome to make snowmen.
Cris: The climate in Romania is generally temperate. For Bucharest, that mostly means the winters have lately become far too mild in my opinion, it barely snows at all and when it does, it doesn't stay long, it just turns into mud pretty soon. And we've had some of the hottest summers in history in the last years, e.g. we have temperatures of about 38 C now, and it's not all, temperatures in Bucharest can rise well over 40 C in July-August and they feel more like 50 C with all the asphalt and pollution adding to the fun.

9. What’s the school system like?
Herby: Elementary blows, lol. High is pretty Good, and College Rocks my socks.
Cris: There are 4 years of elementary school - starting what you're 6 or7 years old (7 years was normal back in my time, now the tendency is towards 6), 4 years of what you could I guess call middle school, and then 4 years of high school. I'm rather speaking of the school system the way it was a few years ago, because I believe they changed some things in the last few years. Anyhow, there was this exam called "Capacitate" after 8th grade and you needed the grades from that (plus the middle school years) to get into high school. In high school, you cannot opt for particular subjects of your choice, you rather go to a class that has the orientation you wish for (e.g. if you want lots of things to do with literature and culture you go to a humanistic class, or else you can chose from classes with more maths, or science or whatever). Oh and - there is a fixed timetable for the whole week, which means you have different lessons each day. Education is compulsory up to the age of ... *thinks* ... 16, last time I checked. That's why I think there is some sort of exam after 10th grade, but I'm not sure what that's all about - new stuff, you see. Anyhow, if you're successful enough in high school, you finish with the exam called "Bacalaureat" or in short, BAC - then you can apply to University. In the past, most universities required you to pass an admission exam, but many have now changed towards only accepting you with your BAC grades - which method is best is hard to tell.

10. What kind of government runs your country?
Herby: Parliamentary
Cris: Well. Wikipedia defines Romania as an "unitary semi-presidential republic". ^^" Other than that, I'm really bad at political terms and definitions. <.<" Though - as far as I remember well, the main parties in power is liberal and democratic.

11. What are some popular sports?
Herby: Hockey, Basketball, Fishing and Hunting
Cris: I guess the most popular sport is football - it's a kind of a national sport. Oh most of Bucharest's youth enjoys ice-skating in winter, at least those I was befriended with - and you can see the skating rinks full. (which hasn't changed anything about the fact that Romania has as good as no international level skaters >.<")
Other than that, people like to support Romanian sportsmen and -women in whatever disciplines they appear at in the Olimpics or other international games - for example athletics or swimming, where we had a few champions. But most notably, we cheer for the awesome women's gymnastics team - gooo girls! :D

12. Could you post a link of some music you like?
Herby: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=stSeBTahyLM
Cris: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=J2tMvg2pZxc - Directia 5 - "Si ce daca" (title means "So what if") - basically a chilled rock song talking about a guy's feelings for a girl, along the lines of "So what if the world is evil and sad, I have you by my side and am happy etc" :D The refrain is awesome (well, I my opinion World Membership Badge Devil) - "N-am avere, decat iubirea, n-am ambitii decat fericirea, te am pe tine si lumea intreaga e a mea" - "I have no riches except love, I have no ambitions except happiness, I have you and the whole world is mine" World Membership Badge 436937

Hey Pen Pal!

I live in the good old US of A, and I know you probably know all about it, but I thought I’d give you my take on some stuff. Hope you don’t get too bored, hehe.

I live in Wisconsin, which is in the top middle of the country. It borders Canada, so that should show you how north we really are. Right now I’m in high school, which is the third set of grades we go through. We start out in elementary school which is kindergarten through fifth grade, and then move on to middle school, sixth through eighth, and then high school, ninth through twelfth. After that, people usually go on to a college, university, or a tech school. The necessary subjects we have in school are math, science, English, and history, but there are a bunch of elective courses too. Last year I took orchestra, a drawing class, Spanish 3, computer science, health and gym as electives (well, health and gym are required but only for one semester that year).

Since it’s a democracy, people here can vote for stuff like the president, other positions of power and other things like whether the next town project should be a library or pool (that’s going on in mine right now) once they’re eighteen. I can’t vote yet, but I can’t wait until I can – looking forward to having a say in what goes on, even if it’s just one vote among millions. It’s still a vote!

The weather in the US ranges from freezing to sunny all happening in the same day – it’s spread out, as I’m sure you know since you must’ve looked at a map once or twice. Where I am, it’s pretty basic. Cold and snowy in the winter, wet and chilly in the spring, hot and dry in the summer, wet and chilly in the fall. Nothing too exciting, but we did have the record for the most precipitation EVER in Wisconsin last year, which meant soaking your shoes whenever you went outside…basically all year. Yay for setting records.

All and all, I like it and am glad that I was born here. Besides who’s running the country, our obscene use of natural resources and having fast food restaurants at every corner and in between, I really can’t complain. So…what’s it like where you live?

Hoping to hear from you soon,
Elana

1 - Please tell me and all of HE'ers who read others work (aka why are you reading my work if you're not elfie? World Membership Badge 13) What country do you live in?

Duck the Duck: England
MarieC: Canada

2 - Are you happy with your country? Please be honest with yourself and HE.

Duck the Duck: Yes, though it's very expensive!
MarieC: Very happy - land of the beavers!

3 - Tell me one thing you hate about your country or more if you really dislike your country because if you do I simpatize with you.

Duck the Duck: The cost of everything
MarieC: Hockey XD and people who think that every single Canadian loves Hockey. LIES!

4 - Tell me one thing you love about country, just one, you don't need to brag to others how awesome your country is.

Duck the Duck: The Isle of Wight
MarieC: It's so prettiful

5 - Do you think you are lucky to have born in such country? (I hope not)

Duck the Duck: Yes
MarieC: Yes I do

6 - Would you like to like to have born in another country? (Please say yes)

Duck the Duck: No
MarieC: Not really

7 - Would you consider moving to another country? (Just nod XD)

Duck the Duck: Been there, done that, got the t-shirt and I'm not doing it again!
MarieC: Maybe like... the US. Near the border. Which isn't far from where I live anyway. ^^

8 - Is your country very religious? If so which is the 'ruling' religion?

Duck the Duck: I wouldn't say very religious, but the "ruling" religion is Christianity
MarieC: I don't know about most provinces, Quebec isn't really. Though I'd guess it's still Protestant in other provinces

9 - Is your country very diversed? Does it shelter a lot of different communities form other countries?

Duck the Duck: Yes, very multicultural, especially in my city
MarieC: Yes, we have loads of immigrants pretty much everywhere

10 - Regarding landscapes would you say your country is very diversed and worth sightseeing?

Duck the Duck: Indeed, a lovely countryside and some great cities as well
MarieC: It's one of biggest countries there is. We have mountains, prairies, valleys, glaciers, and two oceans surrounding it. So I'd say it's diversed. XD

11 - Food! Tell me one garnish of your country everyone should taste!

Duck the Duck: Fish and chips (though I didn't manage to convince Marie to have any!)
MarieC: Poutine! XD

12 - Harry Potter, pheonomenon or irrelvant in your country?

Duck the Duck:
Phenomenon
MarieC: Pheonomenon. Isn't it everywhere? XD

13 - What advice would you give to someone who wished to visit your country?

Duck the Duck: Bring plenty of money and be prepared for all weathers - it could be blazing hot the one moment then tipping it down the next
MarieC: Come in May. XD

14 - What's the one thing you think others should know about your country it hasn't been mentioned so far?

Duck the Duck: Ignore the chavs.
MarieC: We don't live in wooden shacks. We are not lumberjacks. We do not live in igloos either.

15 - Just to finish. What's your position about Gay Marriage? XD

Duck the Duck: I think gay people should have the same rights as straight people.
MarieC: Love is love, why should the gender matter?

--------------------------

My dear beloved friend of the other side of the world:

I saw your add in travelers’ magazine “The World is a Small place and Hippos will take over it!” – lovely magazine I must say the article about purple hippos and Snape’s hair odor was brilliant – in which you said you wish to make contact with a Portuguese pen friend as you were thinking of coming here. Let me tell you right way, don’t do that! Huge mistake!

Twenty… twenty one years in thirteen minutes have I lived in Portugal… well let’s say twenty as I was almost a year in Poland, and so far I’m still yet to find a reason to stay. Small country, small people, small minds, small salaries, small forests… almost everything here is less or small.

Of course big part of my dislike towards the country is related to my tastes which do not match the ones of the ‘nation’. Food, we have a Mediterranean diet where vegetables, fruits, fish and meat take part in large quantities though if you’re not a meat lover you might get some troubles as vegetarian restaurants are still something everyone knows about it but no one has actually ever saw one. Weather, we used to have a very tempered weather but now our winters are getting colder and the winters hotter but there’s sun pretty much all year long which is unbearable to me and my sensitive blue eyes and very light skin.

Beach, beach and more beaches we have that a lot but not the kind of huge clear sand, warm water beaches, ice cold water and small crowded beaches pestered with pickpockets so beware of your precious goodies. Mountains we have a few but nothing breathtaking so costal tourism is pretty much ‘it’.

Work and school we do have some good schools but they are rare and very specific to certain jobs. We have what it’s called ‘Brains’ flee’ all the good specialists go to other countries where they have better working conditions and salaries. The good jobs are taken by old people who do not give younger people a chance.

Anyway the only good point of Portugal might be the people, we are a friendly nation who knows how to receive other people and even though you can be surprised by some narrow-minded people and situations sometimes the opposite happens in an extraordinary good surprise.

Bottom line, if you want to spend a week to see what Portugal has to offer then I say you should just so you can say you’ve been here, though I’d never advise anyone to come here for a long period of time.
Hope you’re okay and please don’t be scared by this letter write back though yeah mail here is sometimes not very reliable.

Best Wishes
Raistlin The Wizard

Gryffindorgal4hp

1.where do you live?

I live in Northern Ireland, which is my mothers birth country. Father’s birth country is Malta, but he lives here with us, because we are a family.

2. Who rules your country?

My country is ruled by the English Queen, Elizabeth II.

3. What do you think of their ruling abilities?

I have always liked the Queen as I have got to know her ruling styles over the years and find them very satisfactory (we just get on with our lives a normal...while inside the Queen and parliament's laws *laughs*)

4.What would you change about your country if you could?

I would want a little more sun in the country in summer, as it is often very cold and rainy year round.
I would also change bits and pieces of the schooling system eg. I wouldn't be abolishing the 11+ right now.
I wish some of the people would be more friendly towards each other.

5. What do you like about your country?

I like the fact that we ALWAYS have green grass and sheep in the fields here. I also like a little bit of rain (but not too much)

6. What do you dislike about your country?

I dislike the fights that take place between the two religions. I wish there could be a way in which we could all get along.

7.What language does your country speak?

Our country speaks English, but we have Northern Irish accents...which is sometimes know as the 'blank accent' because some Northern Irish people think they have no accent at all...that there voice is 'normal.'

8. What is the average tempurature for your country?

The average temperature is...cold. It varies quite a bit from cold....to super cold.

9.Where would you rather live than were you do?

I love Northern Ireland, but I would love to live in Malta.

10.Is there anything special about your country that I should know about? (good weather ect.. Holiday destinations ect..)

This is not really the Traditional holiday nation...but Americans and Polish people seem to like it

Shadow Granger.

1. where do you live?

France, the Alps.

2. Who rules your country?

Democratic President (Nicolas Sarkozy... or summat like that)

3. What do you think of their ruling abilities?

I don't know, most people don't think much of him.

4.What would you change about your country if you could?

Shorter school hours.

5. What do you like about your country?

It's scenic, most of the times.

6. What do you dislike about your country?

It's kinda boring to be honest.

7.What language does your country speak?

French, unfortunately. There's a rule, and there's fifteen thousand exceptions to it!

8. What is the average temperature for your country?

10° to -5° in winter, 15° to 45° in summer.

9.Where would you rather live than were you do?

Back in Scotland!

10.Is there anything special about your country that I should know about? (good weather etc.. Holiday destinations etc..)

Apparently frog's legs taste like chicken, but I'd avoid the snails if I were you.

Hi pen pal!

My name is Matthew and I live in the north of Ireland, more commonly known as Northern Ireland. Ireland was divided into the south and the north because of problems with religion, the south went their own way and created their own government, the north stayed with the Queen and the prime minister. The Prime minister is the person that rules the country, not the Queen, that was over ruled nearly 200 years ago by the bill of rights. Every four years we can vote for a new prime minister who will make decisions that should change our country for the better.

I think our country is blessed with good fortune and a fair amount of prosperity, although sometimes I can't help but wish that it was ran more smoothly. When people disagree with something, bombs, riots and loyalist groups tend to get involved, instead of compromise.

I think our schooling system works really well, even though sometimes it appears long I think the government made a good decision (for once xD) Having said this though, the government plans to introduce new laws that say we have to stay at school until we are 18. I do plan to stay but I didn’t ever want to be forced into it, I would like to be able to decide for myself when the time is right

I think Northern Ireland has a diverse culture. We may have been divided by religion differences but we do have a lot of different cultures and religions in areas, I guess it’s just the Irish charm World Membership Badge Devil

The weather all over Ireland is pretty cool. We might complain about the rain sometimes, but others would be thankful for it, so I am grateful as I’m sure many others are. So along with the rain we have snow (occasionally), hail, fog, ice (where everything’s frozen), sun and heat waves, what else could we ask for? Although the weather is pretty screwed up now, due to Global Warming.
Stop the Global warming!

PostSubject: Re: World Membership Badge   World Membership Badge EmptyMon Aug 25 2008, 14:24

What is the best thing about your country/worse?

Well there’s a lot of good and bad thing about England, personally my favorite is the historical side of it. I mean there’s not much to learn I do fine it quite interesting to learn about. The bad things, let me think well every country has its flaws, but I don’t like the way the country presence itself and what I mean by that is Erm well the way other countries see England is completely different to actually living in there.

The best thing about Northern Ireland is probably the lush green grass and farm animals which i love. The worst thing is probably the fact that it rains like an awful lot.

Do you like your leader? Who is your leader? What is the best/worse thing he or she does?

Really to be honest, I don’t take much interest into politics but I don’t like the leader, the decisions he makes are not the best he could do.

We are lead by Queen Elizabeth 2nd, and our government is led by Gordon Brown. I like them enough I guess....but I know nothing about them. I had to ask my friend who ruled us. *nervous laugh*.

What food there are different then American Foods?

The food are quite similar to be honest, but we have the traditional fish and chips.

We are quite similar to America, but in smaller portions I think.... We also have our own native food, like soda bread, the potato (woo) and guinness. (An alcoholic drink that Im not sure if you can get anywhere else...)

If you could, is there anything you would change about you country?

I would change people views on how they see different people, how people see other people. E.g. Prejudice towards other people.

I think I would change the weather a little. Less rain, more sun, that kind of thing. Other than that I pretty much love Ireland....

How are your studies different then Americans?

I don’t really know anything about the studies in American but I do know they are quite different compared to in England.

We have school from 9.00am to 3.30pm. We also only have two sets of school. Primary and Secondary. Both for seven years. And there's no middle school....whatever that is.

What studies are you favorite? Why?

Drama, History and English. Drama; is gives you the right to express yourself in any situations. History; It gives me an insight into the past which I find interesting learning about. English; you get to used your imagination and I just love it.

I like English because I like anything to do with writing, and I like drama because I enjoy expressing myself in such ways. I hate all the other subjects to be perfectly honest....

What sports there are different then Americain sports?

Well there’s Ruby which is like American football but without all the body suit, cricket is the only one I think is different to any sport in American.

We play football which is like soccer I think. We dont have baseball...as far as I know and American Football is called rugby over here. Again my friend helped me with that.

What holidays do you have that America doesn’t?

White Day and that’s all I can think of.

Um....we dont have Thanksgiving. We do have Easter break but I dont know if you Americans do....I know nothing about America. We have St Patricks day obviously, cause that's a typically Irish thing.

Any hangout places that you like?

Oh there are not of places. Liquid a under 17s club, the park, cinema and bowling there’s not many place except them. Um....we like the cinema...which is "the movies". Nothing Irish though....

Are their any clubs you are in, which are school involved or community involved?

I’m involved in Drama and well that’s it.

I take guitar lessons, but other than that, not a thing. I quit them all when I decided I hated school and learning. When I became an emo I think that was...

Are their any kinds music you like that comes from America?

Well I like all types but mostly rock, there are quite a lot of rock artist that are from America that I like.

I love Paramore and Bowling for soup, Punk Rock kind of bands both of which come from America. I think.

Do you embrace others based on their skin/language/religion or based on their personality?

No, I’ll except people for being themselves. I don’t judge them If do not know them.

Um.... I dont really care about skin or language or all that. I pick my friends out of their popularity.... kidding. Personality. Of course.
m If do not know them.

How many different languages do you speak?

My main language is English but I’m currently learning French and Spanish.

English fluently, French quite well and Spanish and German and little. So in seriousness, one. English.

Do you have friends from other countries that you plan to see/talk to one day?

Yes, I talk to a few people from different countries and I would like to meet them someday, if possible.
Yup, I have loads. Jenn, Jayne and of course, Lesley. *winks*

Do you embrace other religions? What religion are you?

I’m Christian and I’ll accept and welcome other countries and cultures

I really dont care about Religion at all... and I am of no religion. Never "baptised" whatever that is and never been to a Church service or anything....so....yeah.

Hello Pen pal,
Well…I was told I was to write you to actually start out letter swapping and stuff, so I decided to tell you some stuff about the country I live in. Well..lets see., America is all its cracked up to be I can say that. We have weird weather, weird people (me) and weird foods. Well…not weird food, but that have changed the oils we used for cooking our foods in so we could be healthier. Depending on where you are, you will have the same basic weather. Like in the north, its usually cool or cold while down in the south, its warm and hot. It does rain sometimes and you can go months without rain here. If you live in the west…its mostly hot there, winter and summer. Some people are prejudiced while some are decent people.

Our President is George w. Bush, who isn’t that great. But hey, everyone has a bad person in office every once and a while. Ours is just….been there for to long. During the summer, this place is hot and beautiful, while during the winters it snows in some placed and its so pretty, with all the lights people put up in places and the New Years Countdown in New York which is fun to watch on TV before you let your fireworks go lose. Some places have good farm land to, like in the south and some north. Most people, like me, complain about America thought. Maybe just some of us don’t really like it here. Maybe because Global Warming as finally got to my head. But it can be fun here sometimes.

We have lots of stores. And cars, which is really bad. Factories pollute out air to, but hey, if they haven’t cared yet, they shouldn’t now. They should try and go Green…close them down and work like people did before! No…not really, but they could try and be a little more Green then what they are. One day, they are going to regret all they have done though. And when we are swimming in waters with chucks of ice and lava in it….well….lets not say bad things that could happen one day.

School is awesome, depending on what you like and how you spend your days. If you like me and goof off but does your work, then you just had one perfect day of school! Well….that’s how school is for me. But you do have to take a language course, PE, and the four main subjects with either 3 or 4 electives. Math, English, Math, and Science are the main subjects you take. The others depends on what your school can afford or find safe for you to actually do.

Cant wait for you letter!

PostSubject: Re: World Membership Badge   World Membership Badge EmptyMon Sep 29 2008, 05:58

As the whole question thing would be useless without this: What country do you live in?

drkangelcat:
The United States of America.

SlytherinPride7:
The USA.

And do you come from there originally or have you lived in another country before?

drkangelcat:
Always in the same country. Though originated from a different state.

SlytherinPride7:
Born and raised here - I've never lived in any other country.

Who rules your country?

drkangelcat:
The USA are ruled by those with money and power. The president, George Bush, doesn't do much of anything and is truly just a puppet for their control.

SlytherinPride7:
At the moment - George Bush, but in November it's going to change, but basically a bunch of people who don't care about the little people and all about keeping their pockets full.

Do you know of any prejudices people have against the country or people living/coming from there? Do you know prejudices people in your country have about other countries?

drkangelcat:
Well racial, sexual, and religious prejudices are ones I notice a lot around here. Also social and wealth classes. As far as other countries I think the biggest people have are against the French since there are a lot of jokes about them. I suppose some of the stereotypes of other countries could be prejudice too since most think of English (not me though) as snobby jerks with messed up teeth and well for some reason a lot of people automatically think all Germans are Nazi. I've yelled at lot of people over their ignorant prejudices. America = Stupid basically *nods* Oh and I forgot....most are prejudice against rednecks calling them stupid and such. I was born a redneck and I am one of the smartest kids in my area in the city. Also I forgot to mention the KKK, which sadly still exists and is prejudice against anyone not white. Stupid people...

SlytherinPride7:
I know that some other countries residents look down upon us and think that American's are arrogant and some other not so nice things. As far as our country having prejudices against other countries, probably only Afganastan at the moment, and that's because of September 11th - but it's not that we hate the people or anything, we just hate some of the residents.

Are people generally patriotic in your country?

drkangelcat:
Well I suppose a lot of them are given that we celebrate our Independence every year on the 4th of July, though we mostly all aren't too fond with our government at the time...

SlytherinPride7:
Most of the time yes, but I think September 11th kicked them into overdrive, now you can't go anywhere without seeing an american flag.

Which religions are most popular in your country? Is there a single main religion?

drkangelcat:
About 75% identify themselves as Christian and the most popular type of Christian is Roman Catholic. But of course given the many cultures within the United States, citizens' religions vary.

SlytherinPride7:
Um I don't think there's really a specific religion that's most popular since you can go just about anywhere and find someone of a different religion walking down the street. In my neighbor hood there are a lot of those scientologists people but that's just in my area. But I guess I'd say that the biggest influence is probably Christian in the US.

What's the school system like in your country?

drkangelcat:
We for the most part have public education, with some private schools for the more wealthier people and those who are able to obtain scholarships. There is also home schooling and Independent Study, the latter of which I am part of. Ages of schooling rage from 5-18, with some 4 and 19 year olds. Each year we are placed in a different grade unless we get held back for not passing. The grade order is pre-school (which is optional), kindergarten, and 1st grade - 12th grade. The schools are typically divided as such: pre-school gets its own location and is not usually attached to a large school, kindergarten - 6th is together with kindergarten with its own little area (this is an Elementary School), 7th-8th grade is in a Junior High School or Middle School (name varies for some reason), and 9th - 12th is in a High School. Of course this isn't always the grouping since some schools are kindergarten-8th, 6th-8th, 7th-9th, or like my brother is at 3rd - 8th (which in my opinion is ridiculous) .
For pre-school through 6th you get one teacher for each grade. 7th - 12th you get multiple classes and teachers separated into class periods. Typically Junior High and High School students get a choice of electives such as other languages, art, and so on, but sometimes a student loses those electives if they need a support class.
Lunches are about $1 to $2 depending on school district (each county has its seperate school district which includes schools for each grade grouping and even multiple ones). Lunches can be free if your parent can not make enough money to pay for the lunch. Or you can bring lunch to school. Elementary kids get a break during school called recess, and some Junior Highs and High schools have a break too.
Oh and college (which is optional after graduating high school...that is if you have the money or a scholarship for it) has classes you choice in order to get a better job. You can earn degrees of all sorts, which I don't feel like listing World Membership Badge 410894

SlytherinPride7:
It depends on state to state really, but it's basically grade school from the age of 5 to 18 and then you go to college (university) if you want, but it's not a requirement.

Is there a sport that's popular in the whole country?

drkangelcat:
Well I'd say football is a big one, but basketball is too. But I think America is known for baseball in a way since it is dubbed the "All-American sport".Ice hockey is up there too and NASCAR.

SlytherinPride7:
Football or Baseball I'd say. Pretty much everyone watches the Superbowl every year.

Are there any traditions shared by (almost) everybody in your country?

drkangelcat:
Really the only traditions our practically uncultured society shares is celebrating Presidents' birthdays, which we only spend doing what we do on weekends, and commercial holidays such as Christmas (even non-Christians) with presents, Thanksgiving with a big family meal, Valentine's Day with gifts to your loved one, 4th of July with fireworks and BBQs, and of course New Years with fireworks also and sparkling cider. Oh and holidays that no one gets the point of, much like President birthdays.

SlytherinPride7:
Thanksgiving - The Fourth of July (Independence Day) - Memorial Day. Basically all of the holidays that are about our country.

Could you name some food that's typical for your home country?

drkangelcat:
Hot dogs, the all American food for the all American sport. At least that's what I hear XD

SlytherinPride7:
haha - Fast Food, Pizza, Chicken Fingers, Corn Dogs, Mac n Cheese.

What is it about your country that annoys you the most?

drkangelcat:
Prejudice...there is a lot of bashing

SlytherinPride7:
Um - the economy and how much it sucks right now, and how hard it is for the everyday person to live and survive.

What do you personally think is special about your country (if anything)?

drkangelcat:
The people...they are real special...XD lol I think what is special is, well, um, *thinks* Banana Nut! Sorry there really isnt much I see as special...just stupid.

SlytherinPride7:
I think the fact that everyone has a choice about what they want to be in life, no matter where they come from is special in it's own right, since I know that in some other countries people don't have that privillage. I also think it's special how much we as a country seem to care about those less fortunate then ourselves and generally as a country try to help.

Do you like living in your country? Is there any other country you'd rather live in?

drkangelcat:
I do and I think I'd rather live in England, Ireland, or Scotland. I probably wouldn't mind Germany or others but I don't know the local lingo.

SlytherinPride7:
I want to live in England, not because of the Government or anything, but just because I love old things, and well here in America we don't have much of that - at least not as old as things in England.

Anything else you'd like to add, concerning your country preferably?

drkangelcat:
Umm the war we are having is stupid...I hope Obama wins and doesnt get shot....and I will end up ruling by offering yummy moist cake

SlytherinPride7:
Nope lol

***

Hi Pen Pal,

Or "Hallo!", as we say around here. And no worries, that'll probably the only bit of German you'll ever see me write to you, for I hate the language to no end. Go you for speaking English! But alas, I feel bound to tell you some bits and pieces about this oh-so-lovely (not) country: Germany.

I've heard it that we are believed to be prim, polite, accurate and precise people. As a matter of fact, that'd explain why I feel so displaced around here, but then again it isn't really true from my experience - just the typical stereotype that fits few people. What is true, though, is our government is more bureaucracy then the democracy it claims to be. You want to do something, have something, be something; be assured you can complete about a hundred forms beforehand.

Now, our school system. As a toddler, you can be sent to kindergarten if your parents are the type who need or even want to work (or if they simply are looking for a way to get rid of you). Then with 5 to 7 years, depending on your development and exact date of birth, you start primary school; that's your place for the next four years.
After that, say hello to secondary school confusion. After the first half of your fourth primary year, you'll have a recommendation on your report card saying in what kind of school you should continue. We have, let me count, about at least six types of secondary school. Three are ranging from not-that-good in school to excellent students, one school where these three are combined, and then there's two types of special schools (which may also be included in that combined school).
On the different 'normal' schools you spend 5-6 years (not-so-good and alright performance schools) or 9 years (excellent student school, to be made into 8 years). After 6 years on the first secondary school, you might also continue on with the 9 year school if you graduated with marks good enough.

Of course your life isn't finished after that, but let's not get into the German working, studying, and general further learning system right now as that would take another dozen pages. What else is there to know? Our infrastructure is quite nice, we got roads and expressways (called autobahns), you can get to most places by train, and to the closer cities you can often also cycle easily.

The weather is also fairly alright, though summers are getting more mixed and winters are warmer all the time, and the seasons all just blend together and in the middle of fall summer pops up for some days and it all just starts to annoy me. Whatever, though, since we have an awesome fifth season! At least in parts of Germany, that is: carnival season. There's regions where most people are crazy about it, and I live in one of those. Crazy, but immensely enjoyable. If we ever get around to seeing each other, you should come here by that time (mostly some days in February).

Alright, I'll stop for now since you probably have specific things you're interested in anyway. Just let me know in case you have further questions, and I shall try and answer them in my next letter World Membership Badge 436937
Can't wait for you reply,
Gemma

PostSubject: Re: World Membership Badge   World Membership Badge EmptyMon Oct 27 2008, 16:03

1. What country are you currently living in?

Etta: ENGLAND ..... Although according to the BBC and most Americans, i live in Scotland BUT I DON'T!!! England!!!!!!!!! *giggles*

Raisty: Motherland of suckers, aka, Portugal, okay maybe that not over the top but seriously there's so much to be improved but also so much potential I won't deny that.

2. Have you visited any other countries? If so, which ones?

Etta: Scotland, Wales, France, Canada, and in 3 weeks i'll be in Holland, then Germany. :D

Raisty: Oh yeah, I lived in Poland for a year to study. Then I've been brieflu, like a couple hours in Spain, and well XD I've been in the airport of London (UK), Munich (Germany) and Vien (Austria).

3. If I visit your country should I lie and say I’m a Canadian, or is being an American abroad acceptable?

Etta: Lie and say your an Eskimo.

Raisty: LIE! If you're in Europe, LIE! Asia is another story Americans are big over there. The American stereotype unfortunatly is wide spread over here, and to tell the truth all my time in HE only proved that there are exceptions as in everything but nothing to really make that stereotype going away, if even only to strenght it.

4. Tell me about a unique dish that is served in your hometown but that we wouldn’t find on the average menu.

Etta: *thinks* We don't really have a unique dish that's served here, but i guess since its a fishing villiage i hail from, i will say.............

Thick cut chips and Cod served in a John Smith's ale batter (the fish not the chips) with NO mushy Pea's *erlack mushy peas*

Raisty: Octopus! Sounds bad but it's good! Plus a dish made of chicken or pork's blood, I personally prefer the chicken blood a lot softer and nicer. Also any type of cod we can cook cod in more than 1000 ways. Desserts also is something to be tasted and they seem endless! Europe has a far better relation with cooking than UK or the USA.

5. What’s the weather like in your neck of the woods?

Etta: At the moment its cold, cold, with a bit more cold, lotsa rain and we had snow fall for the first time this week.

Raisty: Very mild temperatures, not harsh cold winters or blazing summers, though this is changing, it's getting colder and hotter.

6. What do you think about David Hasselhoff?

Etta: Is he the one with the wax forehead? *goggles him*

I shall sum him up in one word.

ERLACK.

Raisty: BAYWATCH! And he likes Derek, Britney Spears impersonater so Go David!

7. What type of currency system do you have in your country, and will you loan me the equivalent of one million U.S. dollars? Just kidding, I mean will you give me the equivalent of one million U.S. dollars as I have no intention of paying you back?

Etta: We have POUNDS and noooooooooooooo i won't give you £500,000 because i need it as part of my kidnapping HOT F1 Drivers Fund. I'm still £499,997 off my goal but i'm getting there slowly.

Raisty: We have the EURO, which is a common coin to several European countries and I tell you it's soooooo useful, not have to be changining money all the time
[Rigby: as Raisty did not say no to my request for one million dollars, I am taking his silence as consent. Hundred dollar bills will be fine.]

8. What sight should I not miss if I come visit you?

Etta: Angel of the North and the Tyne Bridge (the Aussies bought the design from us so really, they have the tyne bridge and not the Sydney Harbour Bridge.) and the Sage oh and The Castle Keep which was built by King Henry 2nd in around 1168 ... totally cool place, we used to try and lock our mums out on the roof and run away .... beautiful place to go honestly. Oh and i'd even give you a guided tour round the Byker Wall, that was built to keep the Scots out ... there's this joke you see, and goes "What do you do if you find a Scotsman in the Byker Wall (the wall has now been turned into flats)?" the answer "Kick the pig back over it!" *stiffles a giggle* did you know that you are allowed to kill a Scots man here (and in York) hehe. Oh and there's Durham Cathedral .... *thinks* Oh here and There's the Theatre Royal and the Laing Art Gallery, Granger Town, the old Washington Hall OH! and Seaton Delavel Hall, which the National Trust are currently trying to raise £6million to buy off the Delavels to save the Hall - its AMAZING and i can tell you the witch story about Lord Delavel and the Holy Cross Ruins (which are near to where i live). Oh and of course, if you wanted i could show you the TOP SECRET (to outsiders anyway) RAF base which was built here *points to secret location* during WW2 and then theres the old Deadly Diseases hospital, hey you could stay in the hotel that was built on top of it! Its haunted! And then theres the local history like the old Mining shafts, Holy Cross Ruins, the WW2 forever sight oh and if you wanted to walk, you could do the Robert Western (author) tour and the Stan Laurel (from the comedy duo Laurel and Hardy) tour .... i doubt you'll have heard of Ant and Dec or Alan Shearer or Cheryl Cole, but there's unoffical tours for their places of birth/childhood.... OH! And before i forget, i could take you to Sting's old flat! Ha bet you weren't expecting me to say that. Wow i must have rambled oh well! [Rigby: I totally love Sting!]

Raisty: The airport! Go away! Why are you here? Are you nuts???? (Too many historical places to mention XD).

9. Do you hate Americans? Come on now, tell the truth, I can take it.

Etta: Nope, i lobe all Americansssssssssssss, however the rest of Newcastle ... nah only joking, we're the friendliest city you will find here in England *points to polls* we win every year and look *points to recent Sexiest Accent Poll* We have the sexiest accent as well, and have a huge international community, lots of Latinos and Chinese people, mainly students who didn't want to leave when they finished school.

Raisty: I don't hate them, I just don't agree with their culture though I understand it and must say it's the reason why they're so sucessfull. Plus USA must be great for the ones of wealthy means and I plan to visit, though I'd only consider living either in LA or NY.

10. Wow, that was really uncalled for. Now that you’ve insulted my homeland, can I come stay with you?

Etta: Sure, but just so you know, i'm moving to Oxford in December. grin

Raisty: Again? NO! Go away! Run for your life!

Dear Pen Pal,

Hi, my name is Kate and I live in Richmond, Virginia, USA. Richmond is located on the East Coast and is just a few hours away from our nations capital of Washington, D.C. It’s a very diverse and heavily populated area with lots of attractions and events going on all the time.

I’m writing to you in hopes of sharing discourse with someone outside of the USA. I think it’s very important to understand and appreciate other cultures. Often times the US is criticized as being ego-centric, and I have to agree. Although I do love living here, there are so many other countries that I wish to visit and learn about!

So let me tell you a bit of what it’s like living here, and then you can write back and tell me how things work where you’re at. Virginia is very beautiful, we have lots of trees and mountains and beaches. We’re not only close to D.C., but where also close to West Virginia, Maryland, North Carolina, and Tennessee. The thing I love about the East Coast is that our states get a lot smaller, so travel time is shorter. Eventually I plan on traveling to New York and Massachusetts, both which are within a days travel.

The weather here comes in four distinct seasons, we get sunshine and warmth in the summertime, changing leaves and falling acorns in the fall, snow in the winter, and rainfall in the spring. I recently moved back to Virginia after having spent over ten years in Oklahoma. Oklahoma is in the Midwestern part of the US, and the weather there is hot, hot, and more hot. In the winter time Oklahoma has ice, but then it goes back to being hot.

I’ve been happily married for six years now, and my husband, Aaron,, works as a Manager of a home design store. Recently I’ve been working as a home health companion, which I am really enjoying. My hours at the moment vary drastically, but it’s rewarding work.

We have one dog, Emmy. She’s part Chihuahua , part Dachshund- we call her a ChiWeenie, since Dachshunds are often called Weenie dogs since they resemble hot dogs. We also have to chubby cats, Riley (male) and Joey (female). Joey got her boyish name because my husband was against getting her at first, so I named her after Joey Ramone, the lead singer of the Ramones- a punk band my husband loves.

Perhaps if things go well you can come visit us here. There are so many interesting historic sights that I would love a chance to show you. With D.C. just a short car drive away, there will be enough to keep you occupied for weeks. In fact, that was one of the major reasons I used to convince Aaron to move to Virginia. XD

Please write back soon!

Love,
Katie <3

polly

1.Where do you live?
Crewe, England
2.What do you like about living there?
Well the town I live in is quite a rough place and if you don’t know how to deal with the streets then it can become quite dangerous so the town I live in I really quite hate and I just wish I could get out of here but England herself is okay. A lot of the time I get annoyed by the way our society runs now but we have such fascinating History.
3.What do you do during your free time?
I do a lot of martial arts as many people know. Doing Judo, taekwondo and karate though its not that big around here. Its extremely large in local areas and I travel a lot to do courses with the national sensei’s.
4.What are some of the most famous sports played there?
Well around where I live I would say football though the karate club I go to attracts many people from all over the country. And for England I would say possibly the same. Football is of course a very large sport in this country but the karate we have for the KUGB (Karate union of great Britain) is a large organization which gives more than a lot of organizations and martial arts.
5.What’s the weather like there?
Do you need to ask? I live in England :g: its rainy of course XD.
6.Is there more than one language spoken there?
Yeah I like people from all over the world come over here. I think the most would be the Polish at the moment but we do have people from just all over that come to England and the town I live in.
7.What are some of the biggest holidays celebrated there?
MY BIRTHDAY! Well Christmas is always the biggest one and nothing else really compares to that we don’t have stuff like thanksgiving over here but we also have easter and Halloween which are quite big.
8.Would you consider ever moving and living somewhere else? If so where?
Yes perhaps to Scotland so I’m still close to home but more in the country side and just away from the place I live. But if I was thinking big I would go away to Australia and America.
9.What are the main religions practiced there?
I think we have pretty much every religion practiced here but I don’t take a particular interest in that area but I would say Christianity and COE (church of England). But every religion is practiced.
10.What bands are popular there?
Well I don’t think there’s an untimate band here and depending on the person I feel it depends on the music they like. People I hear a lot of are My chemical romance, Scooter, Leona Lewis stuff like that ^.^

Herbaceoustraitorous

1.Where do you live?
Canada Ontario

2.What do you like about living there?
I love the fact that I can just do a hop, skip and a jump and be camping

3.What do you do during your free time?
Create Graphics, or working.lol

4.What are some of the most famous sports played there?
Hockey and Baseball

5.What’s the weather like there?
Right now, its mild, kind of feels like falls coming fast. =(

6.Is there more than one language spoken there?
Yes, French and English are the norm.

7.What are some of the biggest holidays celebrated there?
Canada Day, and Civic Holidays.

8.Would you consider ever moving and living somewhere else? If so where?
Maybe Florida..lol. During the winter season.

9.What are the main religions practiced there?
Christians

10.What bands are popular there?
Anyone who can pick up a guitar.

Dear Pen Pal,

My name is Stephy. I live in the United States of America in the middle of nowhere. It is quite nice iving here since I'm not bothered by much. In the coty the neighbors are quiet close to each other and so you must have to be careful not to get too loud and end up disrupting them. Where I live you can do just about everything you want and not get in trouble for it, unless you got some pretty crazy nieghbors than they might try calling the cops on you for doing something that is legal.

Well if you haven't heard just recently we had votes for our next president. The two running canidates were McCain and Obama. After many months of running for president the voting had finally came. Soon America was to learn that Obama was to be the next president. This shows that America has come a long way since they have voted for an Aferican American seeing as to what had happened in our past history and this makes me quiet proud. I look forward to seeing what all he can do for our nation. Our country will need a lot of help, especially since the econmy is so horrible. Because of the enconomy going down, many people have lost their jobs and less people are buying things which isn't helping our economy at all. I hope soon that the economy will get better. It will make every's life so much esiser.

Even though Obama is now going to be our president there are many people who are trying to prove that he's not a citizen. For this I am short of ashamed. If he wasn't a citizen than he wouldn't of have been picked to be a canidate. Of course I guess with each new president we get people will always have something bad to say about them and because of our rights there's not much they can do to stop it. I'm sure that Obama will try his hardest to do all that he can. He seems to love America and I know he'll do his best.

I love living in America. It's the land of the free and because of the consitution and it's many rules I have so many rights. There are many other places in the world who don't have the rights I do and because of this I am truely grateful. If you ever get a chance you should come to America once and look around.

Love your pen Pal,
stephy

Raistlin The Wizard
amberg93

1. What country do you hail from, and how long have you lived there?
Portugal, 22 almost 23, minus 1 year I was abroad in Poland
The United States of America and for 17 years (aka my whole life XD)

2. What's the most spoken language over there?
Portugese
English, though Spanish is catching up

3. If I already speak your country's language, is there another one I should learn just to be well prepared?
Since you dont speak my language, then no XD But you'll do fine with english
Nah you can get service in English anywhere

4. Which false stereotype do you wish you could erase about your country?
We aren't all short with mustaches
We're not all douchebags who only care about ourselves and think we're able to play God in everyone else's affairs XD

5. Alternatively, is there a stereotype that you find to be true about it?
Yes, we are indeed a welcoming country
Well... Americans are kind of arrogant in general. Most people do seem to think we're the best country on the face of the planet, some are just more upfront than others XD

6. What would you say is your country's national sport?
Football without a doubt (unfortunately)
Football. Not soccer, American Football (the one you play with your hands XD). Such a bad name. ((**I agree XD**))

7. What about culture? Is your country greatly known on the cultural scene, for its movies or painters or even its architecture?
Not in a million years, why do you think I want to escape? Though some musicians are starting to be somewhat known
That's a good question XD I'd say we're probably most well known for Hollywood in that sense XD

8. Do you find most people to be patriotic in your country? If so, how do they usually show it?
*starts laughing hysterically* They say they're patriotic but in the end they do nothing concrete to promote the country
Our country is mostly patriotic I'd say. People differ greatly in the way they show their pride for our country but a lot of people own clothing with the flag on it and have their own flags at their houses, we have two at mine.

9. If I were to visit your country and wanted to take part in a festival of some kind, which one should it be, and around what time of the year?
Really? Visit my country? Now why would you do such a thing? Have you no love for your money? Anyway... August, the festivities in the northern part of the country, tourists seem to love the folklore there.
Festivals are mostly localized actually, though most are held in the spring or summer, sometimes early fall so I guess it'd depends on where you wanted to go for your festival. Mardi Gras is a festival XD If you wanted to go down to New Orleans with the crazies in February XD

10. What about touristic attraction? Which one would you say I would simply *have* to see or else my visit would be worthless?
That depends. If you're a beach person you should go south and enjoy our beaches. If you're for monuments and stuff, than you should visit either the capital Lisbon or the second main city Oporto.
I dunno XD We're a freaking huge country, see whatever you want XD Go see the Statue of Liberty or the Sears Tower in Chicago or the Grand Canyon XD There's lots of options for whatever XD

11. Do you think your country resemble another in any way? If so, which and why?
Brasil, their language derives from ours, it's Portuguese but it's Brasilian Portuguese.
I think we resemble Canada only with an ego and a need to butt into everyone else's affairs XD But mostly Canada, besides some of their laws and stuff, seems like it's pretty much a lot the same as the U.S. XD

12. Would you say your country is generally diverse and open minded?
They appear to be but down the road they're not.
I'd say out country is in some senses and isn't in the others. We're pretty racially diverse at this moment and there are some new laws that prove open mindedness but at the same time there are still lots of closed minded people and we do have laws that reflect that. Also, religiously we're hardly that diverse and we reflect that

13. What kind of climate and sceneries would I be likely to experience if I were to visit your country?
South for beaches, north inferior for mini-mountains and hills. Climate? Mild summer, mild winter.
Our country is big, dunno if I got that across yet, but it's big XD You'd see a lot of everything depending on where you're at. We have mountains and beaches and valleys and plains and deserts and blah blah blah, the list goes on

14. What is school like in your country? Do you find that the education you've received/are receiving is well? How does it work as a whole (how are the years divided and what age do you graduate)?
NO I do not find our education system well, it's lame, protects the weak and doesn't promote the good students. Kingergarten til 4-5 years, primary school til 9-10 years, elementary school til 11-12, first cicle til 13-14, second cicle til 15-16, high school til 18-19, Bachelors, Masters, Doctorate. That's the main system. Of course there's side options
School is... it's school. I find the education I'm receiving to be alright, but I know that there are other places where they get taught crap and places where they get taught much better. It's divided whatever way the school wants to be, but usually that depends on size. Sometimes school districts are split up into Upper and Lower elementaries (K-2 in one building, 3-5 in another), sometimes they're all in one elementary school (K-5), some districts have more than one elementary school and each of them are set (K-5). Some are set as (K-4). Some middle schools are (5-6), while others are (6-8) and usually with the ones that have (5-6) middle schools they have (7-8) junior highs. Then you get to high school which is almost always (9-12). Some schools are (K-12) if there aren't that many kids. Like everything else in our country, there is a lot of diversity. Most kids will graduate at around 18 or 17 (depending on when they were born in the year) but of course we have a lot of kids skip grades and many fail and graduate later.

15. Finally, if you were to consider moving from your country, where do you think you would go? Would it be because it is similar to where you are now or because it is different?
DIFFERENT! For Sure. Either England, US (limited to NY), Canada, Ireland or perhaps Germany
Canada. It's different and it's similar and it's awesome

(Huge thanks to them both for bearing with me XD love you guys)

__________________________________________

Dear Penpal,

I'm very excited at the prospect of having someone new to write to, and so I will begin by telling you a bit about where I am from, with the hopes that you will do the same when you come around to responding. I live in the south of Quebec, which is the biggest province (province, not territories, with those included we come second to Nunavut) of Canada. It is also one of the most diversified for its culture and language that sets us apart from, as we call it, the English part of Canada. You see, in Quebec, we are most commonly called French Canadians among other countries, because our roots vary from that of the rest of the country, except for parts of the Atlantic provinces. While Canada is, technically, a British colony, we belonged to France before England fought and conquered us before expanding their North American territory - at the beginning, most of what they called 'New France' was what today is Quebec, New Brunswick, Nova Scotia, Prince Edward Island and Newfoundland and Labrador, along with a small part of Ontario. Here lived immigrants from France, though admittingly not the pick of the litter - prisonners, orphans, street workers... the kind of people they no longer desired in their own country, whom they sent away to develop a new territory. When England and France fought their war, France abandoned us to them. That's when the English came over and started taking over the country, trying to convert us from Catholicism to Protestantism, from French to English, from one culture to another. We fought, and for the most part, we won. Quebec is, to this day, a french speaking province.

We have our very own culture and stereotypes of lumberjacks and igloos, though you can easily guess those are not true. Well, to be fair, our country started out with a lot of what we call 'coureurs des bois', meaning runners of the woods, which were men who lived in the forest with their families and that, for a living, hunted animals for their meat and fur. I'm sure you'll have figured out, however, that this is no longer the case. Canada is a very beautiful country, because of its diversity - it is the second largest country in the world, and the largest in the Americas. From coast to coast, you will find maritime towns, vast prairies, majestic mountains, sunny valleys and the frozen north. Canada is the country which touches the most water at its borders, surrounded by the Pacific, Arctic and Atlantic oceans. And with such great territory comes a diversity of cultures, from western towns to the big cities, and whatever you are searching for you are likely to find. And when you come over, there are foods that you will need to taste, for you can't find them anywhere else - poutine is the very first meal I'll advice you to take. Yes, it looks gross, and it is a complete disaster to your digestive system in every way, but it has to be the best thing you will ever taste, to the point where it's now starting to invade the United States, for once they've visited us and tasted it, they need some more.

You may have guessed by now that I love my country, and that I am proud of it. It has its weaknesses of course, like any other country, and some things we would do without - I could definitely deal without the hockey craze, because it is not true that every Canadian loves hockey... though I admittingly did cheer rather loudly upon their winning their Olympic games - but at the end of the day, it is my home, where I am happy and free.

Until next time,

Marie

1. What country are you from?
FaerieOfDoom: Australia

TheLucky666: I'm from Bosnia and Herzegovina.

2. What language(s) are spoken in your country?
FaerieOfDoom: Gosh a lot of different ones: the predominant one is English, but we're multicultual, so Spanish and Chinese and Japanese and Arabic...

TheLucky666: In my country, official languages are Bosnian, Croatian and Serbian. (It's basically the same language. Don't ask "How comes?")

3. What is the climate like throughout the year?
FaerieOfDoom: Pretty warm and humid in Summer and Spring, cool and windy and warm in Winter and Autumn

TheLucky666: Moderate, I dare to say. We have all 4 seasons, and they're pretty much what you have seen already.

4. What type of landscapes can be found in your country (mountains, plains, desert, ect)?
FaerieOfDoom: We're not very mountainous, but we have some along the east of Australia called the Great Dividing Range. There's a few deserts: the Simpson desert, the Great Sandy Desert which are pretty much in the centre of Australia. There's the tropical rainforest in Queensland. Dunno about plains. Plains of desert? Um the urban areas cluster along the east of Australia, but then there's quite a few people in Perth, Darwin, Hobart and Adelaide, but still on the rim of the country. Some people live in the centre but it's pretty hard living in the outback. We have a lot of wild bushland (we're famous for it) which is dry and arid, for the most part. Gumtrees and whatnot. It's basically a forest, but more sandy, more dry, and full of underbrush. And we have the Great Barrier Reef, which is full o' fish.

TheLucky666: Mountains, plains and karst topography. (If you search the 'Karst' on English wiki you'll find picture of Kravice waterfalls, which is in B&H World Membership Badge 436937)

5. Do you have any holidays that differ from the US (specific to your country)? If so, what traditions go along with it?
FaerieOfDoom: We don't have July 1st (duh) and we're not that into Halloween. We have Australia Day, which is the 26th of Jan. It's generally celebrated with lots o' beer and a BBQ this is during the school holidays, and people get the day off for it. We also have the Queen's Birthday (I don't know if you have it) where we also get the day off: beer and BBQs (sensing a pattern?) um... think that's it.

TheLucky666: No. World Membership Badge 436937

6. Do you like living in your country?
FaerieOfDoom: Sure, it's better than some places, but the heat gets to me sometimes. I'm not a fan.

TheLucky666: Yes. Yes, I do. XD

7. What are some popular musicians in your country?
FaerieOfDoom: Australian musicians? Um Powderfinger, Silverchair, Bliss N' Esso, Ladyhawk (she's from New Zealand though) and Kisschasey.

TheLucky666: UGH! Don't ask me which musicians are popular (I don't really like them). The most popular ones are Dino Merlin and 'Hari Mata Hari'. They used to have good songs, but now they suck (if you ask me, that is). I'd recommend: 'Dubioza Kolektiv', 'Zabranjeno Pušenje', 'Indexi' and 'Bijelo Dugme'. If you, by any chance, get around something labeled as 'turbofolk' genre, do avoid it! It's the worst trash in the world!

8. What’s your favorite part about living in your country?
FaerieOfDoom: The fresh seafood. I do love seafood.

TheLucky666: Traditional meals!!! World Membership Badge 549390

9. What’s your least favorite part about living in your country?
FaerieOfDoom: The heat!

TheLucky666: Politics and nationalism. Definitely.

10. What are some popular sports?
FaerieOfDoom: NRL (rugby), netball, cricket.

TheLucky666: The most popular sport here is football (or 'soccer', in American English). My country also makes great results in martial arts (karate, especially) and sitting volleyball.

11. What advice would you give to someone traveling to your country for the first time?
FaerieOfDoom: 30+ sunscreen. None of that pansy 15+ SPF. Won't work, you'll get burnt. And don't be stupid at the beach - they'll film it and Aussies will laugh at you. (they film the lifeguards at Bondi and in every episode some foreigner almost drowns 'cause they're silly) And aussie is pronounced 'auZZies' z sound. Not 's' and don't try and argue about it, we hate that.

TheLucky666: Mmm.... None, I guess.

12. What foods do you have that are traditional to your country?
FaerieOfDoom: Nothing cool, just lamingtons and vegemite.

TheLucky666: My fav part! We have an entire cosine! But, the highlight would probably have to be the epic 'ćevapi' (it pronounces sort of like: chewapy; do note it's pl. in nominative) I think it has to be the only meal in the World that can be called a 'tourist attraction'! (OK, I'm exaggerating a lot.)

13. Fun fact about your country?
FaerieOfDoom: It's a continent.

TheLucky666: Mmmmm.... I don't know. It depends on what do you mean by 'fun fact'. There are a lot of interesting stuff, so drop by and see for yourselves!

14. What types of animals are most common to your country (besides house pets)?
FaerieOfDoom: Rabbits and cane toads. There are heaps of 'em threatening our wildlife. But the traditional 'aussie' animals are kangaroos, koalas, wombats, platypuses, and whatnot. But there aren't as many of those as introduced species.

TheLucky666: Domestic animals, such as horses, cows, goats and sheep. Also, Bosnian pony is our indigenous species of horse.

15. What kind of government does your country have?
FaerieOfDoom: Um it's complicated... wikipedia says it's "The Commonwealth of Australia is a federal constitutional monarchy under a parliamentary democracy."

We're under the power of the Queen of England (as one of Britain's colonies), but we have like our own system... Um a Prime Minister, then the House of Representatives and stuff. Elections where the people vote in a new leader (as we just had). It's some super special British design of government, my mum says.

TheLucky666: We have a government? Wow. (OK, I'm kidding!) That would be 'federal democratic republic'. The only one in the World with 3 presidents. (It's painful to explain, just check Wiki)

Hi!

It’s me, Katie, your American pen pal! I hope you’re doing well! I’m sure you already know quite a bit about America but I’ll just tell you a bit about where I live and what I think of the US. ^_^

I like in the Northeast in a tiny state called Connecticut. It’s only about an hour to an hour and a half away from New York City if you drive so I get to go into the city quite often and see some really good Broadway shows and shop (hehehe).

The town I live in is super boring. It’s a small town that’s pretty much in a forest. The houses are all far apart so you have to drive to get anywhere. I guess you could bike but it’s so hilly here that I don’t think I’d be able to make it up half of the hills! World Membership Badge 410894 It’s starting to get really cold up here since we’re nearing winter. In Connecticut, we get all four seasons which is nice because right as you get bored with the heat or the cold, the seasons move on.

I’m fifteen years old (sixteen in December!) and a sophomore in high school (10 grade). The systems for our school work in a range of ways, but usually students start pre-school when they’re four or five. Usually 5-6 year olds are in kindergarten and ages 6-10 are in grades 1-5 which is called elementary (or sometimes intermediate) school. Ages 11-13 go to Junior High (or Middle) school (grades 6-8) and then ages 14-18 go to High School for grades 9-12.

Since the US has a democratic government, we get to vote in all of our leaders and representatives. Just last week we had an election for the House of Representatives and the Senate, both of which are very important parts of our government in keeping checks and balances on the president and making sure no one person gets too much power. Though I don’t get to vote since I’m not 18, I still hear quite a bit about it.

You might be wondering what types of foods are typical for America, but we have quite a range. Because our country was founded mainly on immigrants, cultures from all over the world have shared their types of cuisine with us. You find all sorts of restaurants here: Chinese, Indian, Italian, Mexican, ect, but not all of them are similar to what’s actually served in those regions. Typical “American” food is usually hotdogs, cheeseburgers, steak and fast food. (;

The two most popular sports we have over here is football (the American type with their hands though…not feet…don’t ask as to why we call it that…it’s stupid. xD) and baseball which is supposedly the All-American-Sport. A lot of people wouldn’t say no to a good game of hockey or a NASCAR race though!

What’s it like over there for you? Hope you’re well!

From your American friend,
Katie

Part 1

Paula (Hermione.Granger)

1) What country do you live in? Philippines

2) Do you like living there? Well yes and no. haha I'm not that sure.

3) Have you ever lived anywhere else? Nope. How I wish

4) Do you ever want to live somewhere else? Where? Yes, California or maybe somewhere in Europe. Like Belgium and Norway or Denmark.

5) What languages do you speak? What is your country's main language? I speak English, Filipino Language called "Tagalog" well a little of Spanish because some of Filipino words are originally from Spain and ...... a little of Nihongo or Japanese language. And yes! Our main language is "Filipino" or "Tagalog".

6) What's your weather like? We only have two weathers here. Sunny and Rainy. So yeah, pretty much like always "Hot" or sunny in here.

7) What is your favorite traditional meal? Hmm... Maybe, Afritada? or ..... nilagang baka (nilagang baka is "Boiled Beef" or something like that xD)

8) Where is your favorite place to vacation? Wow! I love to spend my time in a beach even though we're not always visiting any of many beaches here. :/

9) If I came to visit your country, what should I make sure I see (landmarks, beaches, palaces, etc)? Hmm. You should see the Chocolate Hills, the Mayon Volcano, Boracay (one of the most popular beaches here because it has white sand) and... maybe Corregidor? I wish there is a palace here but unfortunately there is NO palaces or castles here

10) What is your country's biggest holiday? Any special traditions for it? Biggest? Well, we celebrate like EDSA day because in that particular place is where People Power is held (sorry for my grammar xD) But actually, we celebrate so many holidays including New Year and Christmas xD

11) Are there any stereotypes about your country that really aren't true? I think? Yes? But I don't really know exactly what it is

12) The United States' mascot is the bald eagle. Does your country have an animal mascot? What is it? I think we don't have mascot

13) What is a fun fact about where you live? Well, honestly, I think in our country, every afternoon you'll see people going out their houses and staying outside there house to talk with their neighbors, you know? chitchat. LOL! I admit, people here aren't PERFECT since some are judgmental but some are very friendly

Ellen:

1) What country do you live in? Scotland (I prefer saying I'm Scottish than I'm brittish)

2) Do you like living there? Yeah! best country EVER! Yeah it's in a recession with lots of job losses and the stereotype isn't too good but I'm proud to be Scottish.

3) Have you ever lived anywhere else? No, lived here my whole life

4) Do you ever want to live somewhere else? Where? No, scotlands brilliant.

5) What languages do you speak? What is your country's main language? We speak english but in the same way that america and australia have their own ways of speaking so do we. We tend to write in proper british english but we speak a wee bit differently. Oh wait wee's a scots word. So we type a bit different to. You sometimes find books in scots. There brilliant. I read the twits in scots once and theres comics like "oor wullie" and "the broons" it scots. We don't really go full out scots we speak it a little bit genrally.

6) What's your weather like? You get the image of rain all the time here but it isn't really that bad. The weathers always changing. The saying red sky at night shephards delight doesn't seem to work here. It might rain one moment and then be sunny the next. It seems to never settle. Its cold in the morning for one thing.

7) What is your favorite traditional meal? Haggis, Neeps and Tatties! Or as a not Scot would say Haggis, Potatoes and Swede. It's so yummy. I don't care if its sheeps insides stuffed inside a sheeps stomach. They come inside plastic now. I don't care what its made of. The rest of the sheeps being used, why should it be chucked in the bin or biology class? I'll tell you what I don't like vegitarian not haggis at all. In my opinion not haggis at all. I think they should put real vegitarians in it. Then its haggis. To a point.

8) Where is your favorite place to vacation? Mull. Its this island in the hebradies. There are three groups of islands the orkney and shetland isles to the north and the Hebradies to the west. Mull is one of the biggest one and is shaped like a back to front C and we always go right to the end of the lower point and go camping. Its amazing.

9) If I came to visit your country, what should I make sure I see (landmarks, beaches, palaces, etc)? Well atleast one castle and one loch. Dunnotars my favourate castle and loch lomond and loch katrine ae both good lochs. There abit far from dunnotar though. Since you love Harry Potter you should go to fort william to go on the jacobite steam train aka the hogwarts express you ride over the glenfinnan viaduct which is that bridge in the films.

10) What is your country's biggest holiday? Any special traditions for it? We mostly have the same holidays as you Christmas is the biggest and same traditions apply. We have two holidays all to own Burns night 25th Jan celebrating our national poet Robbie Burns and St Andrews day 30th Nov saints day of our patron saint. Theres not much of a fuss about them. I suppose there is hogmany (New Years Eve). A tradition linked with it is the first footer. The first person to enter the house after the bells has to have dark hair and carry a gift of coal or fruit cake or something I don't know of anyone who follows this. We turn the telly onto the channel with the Scottish celebations which are always in edinburgh on it and at the bells there piping and stuff from the castle and a famous cannon called mons meg is fired at 12. Robbie Burns songs are always song.

11) Are there any stereotypes about your country that really aren't true? Yeah, Ginger people who all drink a lot and always wear tartan. Its sort of based on the truth. I know theres more gingers here than in any other country. A lot of people drink but not all and we wear as much tartan as any other country exept some people own kilts for special occasions. Most men wear them at weddings.

12) The United States' mascot is the bald eagle. Does your country have an animal mascot? What is it? No, we have the same ones as the rest of britain. We have a flower though. The thistle. A rather bright and prickly weed.

13) What is a fun fact about where you live? There are only four citys with populations over 100000 Glasgow, Edinburgh, Aberdeen and Dundee

Part 2:

Hello Friend!

Since this is my first time writing to you, I thought I would go over some basic stuff about where I live. I live in the USA in the middle of the country. Last September I moved from a city of a couple million people in the middle of the desert to a town of about 1100 people in the middle of farm lands. Kind of a crazy move on my part, but it is easier to save money here as everything is much cheaper.

The USA is a democracy, which generally means that the people get to vote on what goes on within the government. It is a pretty decent system, but in a country this large, any system is going to have its fallbacks. Not having to worry too much about having somewhere to live, or going to work without having to worry about someone blowing me up is pretty nice. Since this is such a big country, I will try to focus more on where I live in particular.

The country in general has varying ecosystems and pros and cons, but the place I moved from was strictly hot. I moved to this state (in the midwest) from a state called Arizona. Arizona has a couple months out of the year where it will be in the 60s during the day but the rest of the year it is 90-120F something. The odd thing about desert weather is it can be scorching hot during the day and then freeze at night. And there is a rather long monsoon season that involves a lot of flash floods. I had lived there way too long, but a big city is kind of hard to save money in, so I moved to the tiny town I live in now.

Where I live now is in a state called Nebraska. It is in the midwest and smack in the middle of farmlands. Not having much city around me is a little annoying sometimes when I feel like going shopping or to the movies, but for the most part it isn't too bad. It's very pretty here. The weather is ridiculous. It doesn't seem to know what season it is. It will be 70 and hot one day, and then snow the next. I am only going to stay here long enough to save money to move somewhere I actually want to live. Hopefully in another country for a while to gain some worldly perspective.

More generally about the country, we have a pretty basic school system. Elementary from 4 or 5 years old to 10 or 12. Then junior high for 2 to 3 years depending on where you live. Then you go to high school and then college. As long as you have decent grades in high school, you can pretty much pick where you want to go to college, and what you want to be. Unless you have overbearing parents, no one will tell you what you have to pick. The freedom of choices in your life are a pretty big deal here. That is the main reason I like this country; because for the most part it allows you to be whomever you choose to be.

Looking forward to hearing from you!

Samantha

First, I want to thank amortentia773, a fellow Hufflepuff, and Hermione.Granger, another Filipino just like me, for sparing me some of their precious time.
1. From what country do you live?
I live in the United States of America
Philippines

2. Were you born in that country?
Yup! In a little town in the mid-west!
Yes

3. What languages do you use in your country?
English!
Tagalog and some other languages from different provinces.

4. If you were to choose, where do you really want to live?

Hmm...let's see...if it can be anywhere in the world, I'd love to live in Australia.
Europe. Scotland, Denmark or England.

5. If I were to visit your country, what place do you recommend me to have a look?
Ooo, there are so many awesome places here...if you like nature, the west has a lot of awesome national parks. The Grand Canyon is always a good one to see, but Nashville and New York City are both awesome cities as well so I'd recommend those too.
The beautiful beaches here.

6. Does your country has a dominating religion? What religion is it?
Christianity is our number one; you can find that no matter where you go in the US.
I think? I'm not pretty sure but it's Catholic.

7. What kind of government do you have in your country?
We have a democratic government that's headed by a president whom we elect every four years. In order to maintain checks and balances over power, we have three branches of government (judicial, legislative and executive) that make sure nobody gets too much power and dominates over anything. It's a pretty good system if I do say so myself.
Democratic

8. If you were the leader of your country, what changes will you make?
I'd stop trying to pass all the ridiculous health care laws because they're all gonna fail miserably...I'd also like us to be a little less involved in foreign problems because we're in all sorts of conflicts right now that we don't really need to be in.

The equality and poverty.

9. How about those things you will retain if you were the leader?
The capitalist system for businesses because it's successful overall. And of course all of our original amendments in the Constitution.
The peace and discipline of the people.

10. How many years of study do you need to have a degree in your country?
It generally differs from whatever you're planning to major in for your career, but I think most people average it to be around four years. It can be much higher for degrees in the medical field though.
I'm not pretty sure about this. Maybe 4 years?

11. Does education necessary to land a job in your country?
For most things, yes, education is highly valued when applying for a job and are more likely to have better salaries and oppurtunities when they've studied and worked hard.
Yes.

12. What is the most common form of public transportation do you have?
Hmmm...I'd say it's probably taxis or subways in the bigger cities and buses in towns.
Jeepney

13. At what month of the year do you experience summer?
June through August.
March.

14. Briefly, how will you describe your country to attract tourists?
We're a large country with an amazing amount of diversity in the people that live in the United States, as well as a large range of land types: mountains, prairies, deserts, forests, ect. so there's something for people will all types of interests to see no matter what interests them. Also, there are some amazing cities that can be found all around the country which all have fun activities that can be done there. While we don't have a lot of very old history since we're a relatively new country, there's still many things for those history geeks too. I'm sure anyone who was to travel to the United States could find something that they'll enjoy.
Philippines is a small country but has many site attractions. They'll find white sand beaches here and a perfect coned volcano.

---***---
Hi friend,

I came from the land of hospitable people, Philippines. If you were a nature lover person as well as an adventurous one, I would like to invite you here in our country.

We have beautiful beaches which you will not regret. The popular Tubbataha Reef which was nominated for the New 7 Wonders of the World lies within the territory of the Philippines. The Puerto Princesa Underground River, a semi-finalist to the New 7 Wonders of the World, could be found in the Philippines as well.

Our country is rich in historical sites such as the Luneta Park in Manila where Jose Rizal was shot. You might also want to visit the Dambana ng Kagitingan in Bataan which was built in loving memories of soldiers who died during the World War II.

How about sight-seeing? You might want to take a look with what Banawe Rice Terraces. How about the Chocolate Hills? I tell you, it really changes color when it rain. Have you seen any mountain with a perfect cone shape? I did. The Mt. Mayon in Albay has a perfect cone shape, though now, because of its eruptions you’ll find the tip missing. You might also want to have some lunch while on a tour around Loboc River

Do you want some adventure? Try to visit Surigao for a great surfing experience. Excited with the rapids? Cagayan de Oro and Davao has river with great rapids though those exciting rapids might be lousy in some months. A hotel in Cebu city will let you experience to walk on the edge of the building. You might also want to try riding the edge coaster. It will let you move around the building while sitting on a cart which will be tilted by 30-55 degrees. I’m pretty sure you’ll have a great view of what’s below you. By the way, that gimmik of that hotel in Cebu is the first world-wide, so you might not what to miss something original.

If you are planning to visit Philippines, the best time would be around April-May for you to have an assurance of a dry weather. Because when it rains, you might not be able to enjoy the view as well as the adventure you wanted. And I suggest, better to have an arrangement with a travel agency for your itinerary. Though, you could tour around on your own. Filipinos are surely hospitable.

A friend from another time zone,
IAMAPUREBLOOD
