HALLOWEEN 2008: Drabble Challenge

Write a drabble to do with Halloween. It can be for any fandom you wish, or even an original piece. A drabble is a short, self-contained fiction, which should ideally be exactly 100 words long.

Length: Exactly 100 words, or as close as possible (10 words more or less)

The pumpkin sat on the countertop, glaring at her from raggedly cut slits. The gaping jaw seemed intent on catching her tender fingers, the nostrils flared in anger. The pumpkin’s insides had been diligently scooped out, and lay in a messy pile next to it. Blackening the inner walls of the pumpkin lay one white candle, it’s wax beginning to spill.

The girl turned her back on the pumpkin, grabbing a piece of candy. When she turned back the carving knife was gone. She felt, rather than saw, the first cut. Flickering smile in place, the pumpkin took its revenge.

100 words exactly!

The cat sat on its fence, watching. With a lazy flick, its tail moved in slow, calculated curves – otherwise, it was absolutely still and stationary.

Children walked past and hardly noticed the cat, so busy were they chatting and counting their cache.

But other things noticed.

The spirit floated forward and assessed the cat, its solid black, glossy fur, its piercing, yellow eyes. The cat was intelligent for its kind. It knew what night it was and what it meant. It was the protector of the house, and would keep out all malignant spirits from its territory.

Feeling defeat already, the spirit went to haunt another, lesser, house.

The people stood around the forest, gazing up at the night sky. One of them wimpered in the background when an owl hooted in the trees. Katheryn smiled knowing that she would be fine. She was the tihing they were afraid of. There was only one monster in the forest, on that Hallowe'en night, and it was her. She stood amung the people, acting human, talking human and walking human. She couldn't wait to get at them, she fed on their fear, and she wuld be going back to her cave with a full stomach.
