| BATTLE FOUR: His Dark Materials vs. Charmed Welcome to the fourth Fandom Battle of Fandom Month. This is the thread for the HDM vs. Charmed debate. Which supernatural tale is the best? Does the metaphysics of Lyra's world inspire you more than the magic of Charmed? Come up with arguments and points about why one is better than the other, remembering to back your arguments up with quotes, references, pictures etc. However - remember to always be polite and considerate of others views! This isn't a place to bash one or the other, but to have a proper debate. Only post in this thread if you have been assigned to one of the groups below. You may notice that some people have been assigned to more than one battle - however, they will still only end up with one score as it will be averaged. Remember to state which side you are arguing for at the top of each post. Good Luck! | I am here to represent Charmed as the better fandom. Charmed is the better fandom because it has real life mixed in with the magical world which makes it more complicated and therefore a stronger storyline. Cahrmed is also better because the plots aren't repetitive or boring, when something is done, its done.Charmed always has new characters in every episode which is credit to the writers, the only time that they have ahd the same characters is if it is a big storyline e.g Cole, and Bille and Cristy. | |

HDM, as a whole, is extremely more detailed and meaningful than Charmed, as a mere television show, can ever be. Simply looking at the fact that it is a book shows us how much more it can bring to the reader. Words have a certain magic of their own that can bring stories to life in our heads much more creatively than a television show can. The book form allows us to picture the characters and scenes for ourselves and develop our imaginations and creativity, rather than being shown an actor and having to conform the character to fit the actor’s appearance and self in your mind.
HDM also allows many subplots to occur throughout the series. Charmed, in which the characters must battle a new demon every episode, is thus just not able to carry along the same kind of deep plot as an ongoing series of books can. The main characters, though sometimes seeming a bit young for how they act, are very easily relatable, they all have flaws, just as a real person, and they have pasts and families and feelings and reasonable actions. The events and war they are forced through force them to grow up much quicker, making these books enjoyable and relatable to all audiences, both young and older. The stories themselves always keep the reader in suspense, always from the very first sentence, and is never predictable no matter how many times one reads it either. And while the story satirizes our world about religion and authority and teaches important lessons about growing up, inside the actual story lies our world—where Will comes from. And with our world actually being in the story itself, it just draws the reader more in and makes them feel like they belong, like they could actually be a part of the adventure. Which, really, when you think about it, is what makes the books so amazing in the first place. | |

| (HDM)
*applauds Shausto*
HDM was my Harry Potter before Harry Potter - all through elementary and the first part of middle school, this was my thing. I've actually begun rereading them, and can truly say that the magic hasn't been lost in the past few years.
In addition to what has been said in support to HDM, I would like to state a few things relating directly to the Charmed supporter's argument. Matt, in your post you pointed out that there is the real world mixed in with the magical world - HDM does that, but takes it a number of steps further. As Shausto said, one of the characters in HDM is from our world. The other main characters also visit this world, but they go to many other as well, which is what I found intriguing, not that they were in our world. Next, you said something about repetitive plots. At a first glance, HDM may (somehow) seem like a repeat, but let's take that first glance:

- Lyra Belacqua is content to run wild among the scholars of Jordan College, with her daemon familiar always by her side. But the arrival of her fearsome uncle, Lord Asriel, draws her into the heart of a terrible struggle - a struggle born of Gobblers and stolen children, witch clans and armored bears. And as she hurtles toward danger in the cold far North, young Lyra never suspects the shocking truth: she alone is destined to win, or to lose, this more-than-mortal battle.
Philip Pullman's award winning The Golden Compass is a masterwork of storytelling and suspense, critically acclaimed and hailed as a modern fantasy classic. Knife: - Quote :
- In this stunning sequel to The Golden Compass, the intrepid Lyra finds herself in a shimmering, haunted otherworld - Cittagazze, where soul-eating Specters stalk the streets and wingbeats of distant angels sound against the sky. But she is not without allies: twelve-year-old Will Parry, fleeing for his life after taking another's, has also stumbled into this strange new realm.
On a perilous journey from world to world, Lyra and Will uncover a deadly secret: an object of extraordinary and devastating power. And with every step, they move closer to an even greater threat - and the shattering truth of their own destiny. Spyglass: - Quote :
- Lyra and Will, the two ordinary children whose extraordinary adventures began in The Golden Compass and continued in The Subtle Knife, are in unspeakable danger. With help from the armored bear Iorek Byrnison and two tiny Gallivespian spies, they must journey to a gray-lit world where no living soul has ever gone. All the while, Dr. Mary Malone builds a magnificent amber spyglass. An assassin hunts her down. And Lord Asriel, with troops of shining angels, fights his mighty rebellion, a battle of strange allies - and shocking sacrifice.
As war rages on and Dust drains from the sky, the fate of the living - and the dead - finally comes to depend on two children and the simple truth of one simple story. The Amber Spyglass reveals that story, bringing Philip Pullman's His Dark Materials to an astonishing conclusion. To me, at least, this doesn't seem repetitive in the slightest. It is a magnificent original work of fiction that combines the growing up that we all have to go through with magic and mystery. Another thing to look at is the time span:
The Golden Compass was written in 1995. The Subtle Knife followed and was released in 1997. The last book, The Amber Spyglass, was released in 2000. In 2007, The Golden Compass was made into a movie. The love of HDM has spanned over ten years, and if that doesn't show how good a fandom it is, I don't know what will.
Like I said above, the first book was made into a movie in 2007. It featured many known actors (Nicole Kidman, Daniel Craig, and the voices of Freddie Highmore and Ian McKellan) beside new ones, such as the main character Lyra, who was played by Dakota Blue Richards. It was nominated 21 times in the Oscars, and won three: Best Achievement in Visual Effects, Excellence in Production Design and the Best Special Visual Effects.
