| I know the films have yet to be released, but Becky told me earlier that they had some stills from the film on IMDB, so I went to look and it looks great! I hadn't realised they were so far into the making of the film. According to IMDB, it's going to come out this year! I really hope they do the book justice with this series of films, because I love the books. Although I never would have considered him, Daniel Craig is playing Asriel, and in the pics, he looks great! He has piercing blue eyes which seem to make him a very creepy, canon Asriel. Nicole Kidman is playing Mrs Coulter, which is OK I guess...I'd always pictured Catherine Zeta Jones as Mrs Coulter, but I can imagine Nicole doing the sweet-yet-deadly Marisa Coulter. There are a couple of pics of Lyra, and the girl who is playing her is an unkown. I think that she seems a little young, especially when you consider what happens near the end of The Amber Spyglass (I won't spoiler it for those who haven't read the books), but by the time they film that she would be older I guess. Here's the link to the IMDB photo gallery: http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0385752/photogalleryLee Scoresby looks older than I imagined, but still pretty much the same. From one of the pics I think we can see John Faa and Ma Costa, and they look good. I wish Will was in this book so we could see who is playing him! Overall, I can't wait for this film - anyone else looking forward to it? | |

| oh my GOSH I am excited for this film! The books were amazing, and the pictures look great! The girl looks kind of young, but I'm sure she'll mature enough by the next two movies. I had always imagined Nicole Kidman as Ms. Coulter... I can't wait to see what her daemon looks like | |

| This is another one of the action/adventure/fantasy movies that look really good. This one comes out on the 5th of December. Heres the trailer for those that want to watch it https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=oj61Q5KPues. This movie is based on a small girl who gets given the compass of truth and then has to go on a big adventure etc you catch my drift? But it looks really good. And heres the imdb link http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0385752/ | |

| I'm almost done reading the second book in the series and it is really good. The Golden Compass book is amazing, I'm really excited for the movie, but a little nervous because I like the book so much. If Nicole Kidman is playing who I think she is playing she will be perfect. | |

| I saw the preview for the movie the Golden Compass when I went to see Order of the Phoenix... it looked amazing! I knew it had to be based on a book, but somehow I have never heard of them. So now I'm on the 2nd book- the Subtle Knife, and I really have to say that I love these books. I too hope the movie doesn't ruin it! | |

| A lot of movies don't give credit for the books Harry Potter for one of them. What I have seen of the trailer I don't think it will ruin the book. | |

| Ahh...now you see I'm quite worried about the film. Perhaps not Northern Lights so much, but if (when) they make the other two...that's what I'm worried about. I've heard that they've cut out all the religious elements from the films. So where's the plot? Everything bad that happens to Lyra, everything that Mrs Coulter does...driven by the Magisterium, because they want to 'save' Lyra from temptation. If, as I've heard, they're replacing the Magisterium with the government - where's the conflict? - Spoiler:
Lyra and Will 'kill' The Authority - big part of the plot. Lord Asriel wants to build a Republic of Heaven in the new world - that's the whole point of him blasting through to it - what are they going to give as his reason now? The whole idea of Dust is related to religion, and it is Lyra's temptation (being the reflection of Eve's temptation) that causes the Dust to fall normally again and not drift away.
Then there's Baruch, Balthamos, Metatron, Father Gomez, Mary, The Oblation Board, the Consistorial Court...
In essence, religion is a huge part of the books, and to take it out of the films completely...it doesn't make sense to me. It's to do with money, in the end I think. They don't want to put out a controversial film because it might lose them money. But that means we'll probably see a compromise in the story. *sigh* They should so let the fans make the films!

| I am on the third book now, and they are amazing. I have been a little worried about the movie ever since I started the first book, and hearing that they took religion out makes me almost not want to see it (I won't be able to stay away). If you take the religion out of the book, you have completely changed the whole story. If they took religion out, they didn't make The Golden Compass, they make something totally different. Grrrrrrr beyond words | |

| it would really be a pity if they cut the plot *sighs* .. ... although I kinda understand the motivation behind it, it's ... censoring. And there are other religion-criticizing movies which they didn't cut ... I think the Code of DaVinci is one of them... *hasn't either read or watched it, but everybody talked about it at some point xD* ...maybe because it's a movie for kids, basically, they think the church will be angry if they "set the children against the church" ... which, again, is just pure .. poo. You don't change children's religious belief just by a movie. -_-" ... and if they really were afraid of that, they'd also have to censor the book and that, for crying out loud, is against the freedom of opinion XD whatever. XD I'll just read the Golden Compass once again, after the movie. Because really, I just remember the plot in general, I've forgot the details and it's just fine like that, I don't wanna sit at the movie just like I sat at HP OotP, complaining every 5 minutes that they left out this or that... XD ... I just wanna enjoy the movie | |

| So I watched this movie today and here are my thoughts:
- Spoiler:
So I liked this movie I think it did quite a lot of justice to the book considering a lot of the main idea for the plot was taken away. I also think that the girl who played Lyra was an amazng actress and she played the part perfect. I loved the speical effects and I think that they got the right of to a tee and this is a must see movie for anyone fan or the books or not. One thing I don't understand is why change the books from Northern Lights to the Goldan compass.

| There's actually an explanation for the change on wikipedia... but I don't feel like pulling up the link for the page haha. I personally think that the American name works better for America and the British name works better for England... but whatever. I don't know haha I'm seeing The Golden Compass tonight and I'm superexcited | |

| Well, i have read all three books *stil trying to find a copy of the 4th* and i adore them to bits, so i was rather apprehensive when i took to my seat this evening to watch the film. And what can i say, *gets spoiler tags ready* i had heard that lots of things had been cut from th films, i understand reasons for this but and i mean a BIG but, although this film was very good, i feel let down and disappointed. My complaints and likes are below. - Spoiler:
First up, i loved seeing Lyra at the very beginnning of the movie with Roger and Billy Costa, it was just great.
I also loved the fact that the film stayed true (well almost) to the point where Lyra goes to the shack in the North where a "Ghost" is.
Now, here is where, for me, things went down hill.
The boy in the shack was not and should not have been Billy Costa, we KNOW Billy makes it back to Ma Costa (with his Deamon who WAS NOT NAMED RATTA!) after helping Lyra and Roger break everyone out of Bolvanger.
Then of course comes the whole "FILM WARP" with Lord Asriel, whilst fighting those Samarians or whatever they are called, i thought i was watching a James Bond Film! So did John!
another thing about Asriel, he was being kept prisoner by the armoured bears not those guys who took on James Bond! *still thinks Jason Isaacs would have been so much better but loved Daniel as James, i mean Asriel anyway.*
What else....
Oh the whole "Iorek Byrnison becomes king before they attack Bolvanger" that annoyed me. WHY COULDNT THEY KEEP THE FILMIN SEQUENCE WITH THE BOOKS?
I so wanna be Sarafina, she rocked, was exactly as i pictured her in the books, and her going to Lyra on the ship didnt bother me, very cool.
I LOVED the fighting, kids Vs soliders, in come the Gypians and Iorek, was how i pictured it, along with Iorek's fights with the other bear whatshisname, so, the fighting was cool, loads of kids screamed (i cheered) when Iorek won and how brilliant a victory it was *whoosh off goes jar, whoosh broken neck whoosh i win* bloody brilliant!
And now for my big, film ruined complaint someone please tell me, how and WHY they felt the need to CUT THE ENDING OUT? hello, what about the next book? IT DOESNT START WITH LYRA!!! HOW ON EARTH ARE THEY GOING TO EXPLAIN THAT EH?
Nicole Kidman was brillaint as Mrs Coultar, she really did own the Charecter when she finds Lyra about to be sliced by that big machine.
Dakota as Lyra, a girl chosen from thousands at an open call, WAS BLOODY BRILLIANT! Well done to her!
Graphics and explosions were all cool. Overall a good film, i'd reccommend it to someone who HAD NOT read the books, if you've read the books tho, be prepared to sit and go thats nt right, thats wrong, what the hell....during the 2nd half of the film.
ah i feel better now . | |

| *will not click spoiler tags until she has seen the film* Which will still be in over a week... I heard they cut the ending because they didn't want to end the film on a sad note - Spoiler:
(Roger's death)
So the last three chapters of the book will be put into the next film, if it gets made. About the name change...I believe The Golden Compass was Pullman's original name for the book when he was first getting it published. Then he decided that he liked Northern Lights better, and changed the title to that, but the American publishers wouldn't change it to his preferred title. I think Northern Lights fits much better, because it's not a compass!! And the Northern Lights *do* actually feature. Anyway...I really want to go and see this! But I'm not going to see it dubbed into French, no way!

| I like the Golden Compass... I like to think that it "points to the truth" like a compass points to the north... plus, the truth is practically IN the north so it annoyed me that they never made that connection So ANYWAY just saw the movie and I thought it was faaaaaaaaaaantastic My thoughts: - Spoiler:
I like how they showed Lyra was a big storyteller right from the beginnning... the poinsoned robe story was cute. And the way she was friends with Billy Costa, their conversation was also very cute The kid who played Roger at first looked off to me, but I warmed to him as the movie went on. He was cute in a little mouse sort of way I actually disagree with Etta... I thought that the first half of the movie was a little off and then it kicked into its groove in the second half. All of the fighting was amazing... even though Daniel Craig's beating up the eskimos did scream, "LOOK, IM JAMES BOND!" The bear fight was also pretty good... jaw-dropping even.... HAHA joke. Get it? All the Bolvangar scenes were creepy like NO OTHER. I'm still shivering from it... ehhh. Just the way the adults were so obedient and their daemons were so blank... *shiver* All of the white walls and the children's clothes reminded me of an asylum. I thought it was a good place to end the movie I knew that they cut off the final 2 chapters of the book out of the movie, but one other girl in the theatre yelled out, "ARE YOU KIDDING ME?" when the final credits showed up... made the audience laugh I think that all of the changes from the book to the screen were necessary, and did not take away from the plot at all. Introducing little Tony and Ratter would have taken too long, so I like that they replaced them with Billy. I didn't mind. Didn't make the movie horrible. Aaaaand thats bascially all the spoilers I have.
So yeah, I liked it Go see it, everyone

| I saw this today, and here are my thoughts... - Spoiler:
I liked it. I went in expecting not to, because I'd heard they cut all religion, which I thought would ruin the plot. Well, technically, not so: we never really hear just who the Magisterium are - we're never explicitly told that they're the church, so if you've read the books you'll know it is, if you haven't, then not.
I thought it was a good adaption. I was a bit confused that they swapped the sequence of events around - Bolvanger after Svalbard instead of the other way around, but to be honest it didn't bother me too much. I can understand why they changed it, considering the way they chose to end the film.
Casting was fabulous - I'd worried before seeing it that the actress playing Lyra looked too young, but she was fine - her voice was very mature. Kidman and Craig were fantastic as Mrs Coulter and Lord Asriel, for the small amount of time they were in the film.
I liked seeing the cameo's from Derek Jacobi and Christopher Lee, and Ian McKellan's epic voice fitted Iorek perfectly. Lee Scoresby was great too, though his balloon wasn't very balloon-y!
The CGI worked well - for everything but the monkey. Did it have to look so fake? They could have done a lot better on the monkey, but the other daemons were really great, and the bears too. I loved how we actually saw the daemon being extinguished in a poof of Dust when their human died.
I also liked how we 'saw' Lyra's readings of the alethiometer by going into the compass and seeing the images through whorls of Dust. It sort of helps us understand without explicitly saying it that Dust controls the alethiometer.
I am a little annoyed that the ending was cut, but it didn't bother me too much because I knew it was coming, and it *does* leave a little more anticipation for the next film.
So overall, I did enjoy the film and I think they did a pretty decent job of bringing a very complex story to the big screen.
Now I can't wait for The Subtle Knife - and they'd better cast someone GREAT for Will!
Look what I found: http://blog.wired.com/games/2007/12/want-to-see-the.htmlIt shows an extra scene (the whole last part was filmed but scrapped), where Lyra goes to Lord Asriel at the end. Apparantly it's from the video game.
