Cadbury - A early history

Cadbury has been one and the same with chocolate since the year 1824, when John Cadbury from Birmingham in the UK, opened his first shop, a shop that began the world trend of the Cadbury’s chocolate we all know and love today. The well known recipe for Cadbury Dairy Milk; first launched in 1905 and is still a leader in the chocolate world today.

Who was John Cadbury?

John Cadbury was a ‘normal’ working class man who was one of ten children. His father Richard Tapper Cadbury was a well-known Quaker who had moved to Birmingham from the West Country in 1794. In 1824, when he opened his shop at 93 Bull Street, John was only 22.

John Cadbury had a extensive flare for advertising and promotion. His first advertisement was in the Birmingham Gazette in 1824, which quotes:

"John Cadbury is desirous of introducing to particular notice 'Cocoa Nibs', prepared by himself, an article affording a most nutritious beverage for breakfast."

He soon established himself as one of the leading Birmingham tradesmen and Growing sales of John Cadbury's cocoa and drinking chocolate of 'superior quality' determined the future of the business.
Cadbury timeline – the early years
*In 1824, John Cadbury opened his shop which began the Cadbury legacy
*In 1831 The manufacture of drinking chocolate and cocoa began.
* By 1842, John Cadbury sold 16 types of drinking chocolate and 11 cocoas
* In 1847 A larger factory in Bridge Street, Birmingham, was rented and John's brother Benjamin became a partner.
* In 1854, The Cadbury Brothers received the Royal Appointment as Cocoa Manufacturers to Queen Victoria.
* In 1861, John Cadbury stepped down and Richard and George took over the business.
* In 1869, Cadbury became the first business to put pictures instead of printed labels onto chocolate boxes.
* In 1875, The first Easter eggs were produced
* In 1886, Cadbury became one of the first firms to open dining rooms with kitchens and with food on sale.
* In 1889, John Cadbury died
