Cadbury Chocolate

Cadbury is a name that nearly everyone in Britain will know. It is a name synonymous with chocolate since 1824, when John Cadbury opened his first chocolate shop.

Cadbury is perhaps most famous for its Dairy Milk, which was launched in 1905, and has just celebrated 100 years of being the top selling chocolate bar in Britain.

John Cadbury, a young Quaker, opened his first shop in 1824 in Bull Street, Birmingham. At the time, it was a grocery store, but by 1831, he had specialised and become a manufacturer of drinking chocolate and cocoa, and so, the Cadbury legend was born.

John Cadbury began manufacturing his products at a factory in Bournville, Birmingham. It drew workers from all around; in fact, many of the houses in that area were built specially for the factory workers, which came to be known as Bournville Village. Bournville remains the home of the Cadbury factory today. The factory is now part of ‘Cadbury World’, which houses an exhibition on the origins of chocolate, a tour through a working part of the chocolate factory, where you can taste the chocolate. You also learn about the history of Cadbury, watch some of the companies famous advertisements (such as the series of Milk Tray adverts). You can see the model used in the Coronation Street sponsorship adverts, take a ride through ‘Beanland’, and visit a museum displaying the products through the ages.

Today, Cadbury chocolate remains a firm favourite of children and adults alike, and it’s not hard to see why it is so popular. With a distinctive taste, and many different products (e.g. Twirls, Flakes, Time Out, Crunchie, Milk Tray, Roses, Heroes etc.), Cadbury is a successful worldwide brand.

It remains to be seen if Cadbury will continue being the favourite chocolate of British people in the 21st century, but for a brand that has had a lifetime of 182 years, I believe that it will continue manufacturing chocolate for many years to come.
