| Subject: Godric's Hollow, Who was There ? Wed Dec 17 2008, 16:27 | |
| The events that night at Godric's Hollow are pivotal to the story and so far we've been teased with only snippets of information. I can't imagine that we'll not get the details in Book 7, and I can't imagine after all this time that there won't be a surprise or two in that reveal. There is no doubt in my mind that Severus Snape's backstory will play a huge part with regard to Harry and what he has to do in Book 7. JKR herself has told us we'll learn more about the werewolf prank, and we'll also learn something about Snape's love life. Dumbledore's ironclad trust of Severus has been brought up many, many times. We'll have to learn the originations of that trust as well. It is also my contention that if Voldemort's primary weakness is his inability to love or understand love, that we have to see incidences of that weakness leading up to his ultimate downfall. It obviously did the first time as he underestimated Lily's love for her child and overlooked the ancient magic that came into play by her sacrifice. I fully believe that Voldemort knew of Severus' feelings for Lily ( Professor Snape's "heart on sleeve" comments). So I can see the possibility of Voldemort attributing Severus' presence at Godric's Hollow to try and save her as an act of weakness rather than outright betrayal. In that case, if Voldemort wanted to secure Severus' service in the future (he was very usefully placed at Hogwarts next to Dumbledore, after all), Voldemort may have seen the value of sparing Lily in order to hold her safety over Severus' head to keep him in line and achieve his ends. It's one possibility, and we've certainly seen that Voldemort does manipulate other's feelings of love (Draco) for his own purposes. It is obvious (to me) that Severus and Dumbledore both felt, at the end of GoF, that Severus might be walking away to certain death by returning to Voldemort. It would have been imperative that Severus be able to convince Voldemort that it was Harry he hated, Harry he blamed for Lily's death, that he had gone through a period when he was weak because of his feelings, but that he was now ready to prove his loyalty to Voldemort once and for all. By taking Professor Severus Snape back, Voldemort once again underestimated love (Severus' love for Lily) and by so doing, placed Severus in a position from which he can help Harry vanquish him. During the "year" that Pettigrew was passing information there were near misses, I believe that Severus Snape may have been the one to anonymously warn the Potters. Couldn't Severus Snape have learned there was to be a meeting prior to Godric's Hollow and attended it using James' cloak? After all the Headmaster had James Potter's invisibility cloak. One could ask the question, why did the Headmaster have Potter's cloak ? Could it have been given for a well-placed spy to use when needed ? Also, considering the number of parallels we already have between Harry and Severus, I'm thinking we could see a mirroring event at Godric's Hollow with Severus also having been immobilized and forced to watch helplessly while someone he loved was killed.
PoA, Ch. 19 "Like father, like son, Potter! I have just saved your neck; you should be thanking me on bended knee!"
Professor Severus Snape has just saved Harry, Hermione, and Ron from Sirius Black which apparently mirrors a time in which he saved or attempted to save James (like father, like son), James should have been thanking him on bended knee.
PoA, Ch. 19 "You would have been well served if he'd killed you! You'd have died like your father, too arrogant to believe you might be mistaken in Black -- now get out of the way, or I will make you. "
I know that many feel this statement relates to James' choice of Sirius as Secretkeeper. I think it relates directly to James' refusal to believe the secret had been given up, that very night, and the wasting of valuable time arguing the point. I personally believe that if Severus knew the secret, he knew the secret because Lily wanted him to know.
He's the one that tells Voldemort the Prophecy. He's the leak that gets the Potters out of the fray thrice. (speculation) All Hallows Eve comes about. Severus heard the plan to kill them. He goes and warns them. James' is his usual self, doesn't want to hear what Severus says. Then, the-one-who-thinks-he-is-immortal shows up ready for the showdown. Severus has no where to go. So he casts a Disillusionment Charm, hiding himself from view. Therefore, he is forced to watch his schoolboy enemy being killed. He has to watch his only love being killed. He has to watch the attempt on Harry. Once The Immortal One is gone he ends the charm and goes to the Headmaster. This, in my opinion would explain Dumbledore's ironclad trust in Severus Snape. It would show, as well, to Harry that Severus really did care. I think this shall open the door for one of the Lily revelations. After all Ms. Rowling herself has said that there will be several things revealed about Lily. Severus didn’t say he was at Hogwarts the night when ( he doesn’t even mention the word night) Voldemort died. He tells Bellatrix LeStrange and Narcissa Malfoy that he was at Hogwarts when Voldemort fell, period. Small difference but it means if he wasn’t at Hogwarts the moment Voldemort fell he lies. Severus Snape is a double agent, his words in Spinner's End are dubious, that whole chapter is dubious for a lot of reasons but his words don't equal "canon." The only thing canon is that Snape would have a lot of believable reason to lie to Bellatrix or "Spin" the truth. That's his job.

| Well I dunno about the whole Severus hiding with a disillusionment charm during Lily's and James' deaths. After all wouldn't the Dark Lord have noticed him. He's a powerful wizard and he would have noticed a flicker of light or something if Snape moved just a little. Snape's powerful but I don't think he's powerful enough to create a Disillusionment charm that would make him fully disappeared. This, however is when I turn to Harry Potter Wiki.
- Quote :
- Severus suffered terrible remorse when Voldemort decided that Harry Potter was the subject of the prophecy, and that Lily was now in danger as a result of his actions. He begged Voldemort to spare her in exchange for the lives of her husband and son. He also approached Albus Dumbledore to ask for his help in saving Lily. Dumbledore agreed, but insisted that Severus serve him as a spy among the Death Eaters. Severus secretly defected from the Death Eaters and joined the Order of the Phoenix, under Dumbledore. When Voldemort went to kill the Potters, he did give Lily a chance to step aside, but when she did not, he killed her anyway. When Severus learned of Lily's death, Dumbledore persuaded Snape to help him protect Lily's son Harry, reasoning that it was the best thing he could do for her.
So I read this and came to the conclusion that Snape was not there. So the Dark Lord did give Lily a chance to live and so Snape would have expected him to do so, so why would he have gone there? As for him not being at Hogwarts...well their death took place on Halloween... I think the wizards have that day off so it wouldn't be wierd that he took off Halloween. Probably to go off and do some Death Eater stuff. So yea I don't think he was there
