Rowena Ravenclaw, the Fair

Rowena Ravenclaw is one of the great founders for Hogwarts school for witchcraft and wizardry. She is stated to be born and raised in the glens. This most likely is in Scotland, perhaps where the Great Glen is located. She is said to be an only child in an upper classmen family. She went to the most privileged private schools during the day while she had a private tutor that her parents paid to teach her magic at night. To the world, the Ravenclaw family was just normal and rich. Although they still kept their magical upbringing and powers, they maintained a dignified face to society. They were successful and popular. Yet as Rowena grew older, she wanted to make more of the magic she had develop it, as well as encourage others to develop their magic to their highest ability. She then disappeared from her parents home and went in search for a larger magical community where magic was expressed freely and not taught in the darkness of their home.

The name Rowena comes from the old German language meaning fame and joy. This was exactly what she found in the wizarding community. Yet she couldn’t find a school that she approved of to teach magic at. So she, and three of her close friends Helga Hufflepuff, Salazar Slytherin, and Godric Gryffindor, decided to open their own school called Hogwarts school of witchcraft and wizardry. For her house, Rowena Ravenclaw chose students who were smart and clever. Intelligence was the most important quality to have in this house. The symbol that represents the Ravenclaw house is an bronze eagle or raven on a blue background.

There is no known heirloom that was left behind by Rowena Ravenclaw. Yet it is stated in the chocolate frogs that she is the main creator of the revolving staircases and moving rooms. For this brilliance, she is remembered most by her intelligence.
