| I would just like to say that Halloween has lost its sparkle. It’s just not like it used to be. This year we received no trick-or-treaters. Before we would have to buy candy like crazy to hand out to the many little children dressed in weird costumes, but this year we were disappointed and left with a full bowl of candy. Well we we’re totally disappointed; at least we had some candy for our own. Even being at college I had noticed the lack of celebration. There were still the parties (what would college be without parties) but no one was dressing up but for a handful. Now that Christmas is coming around the corner there is more people decorating than what they did for Halloween.
Now of course you might all be thinking, well you’re just saying this. You have no proof. Wrong! I have done some research and now I will present it to you!
Now looking at this website, Halloween related statistics, you can see how Halloween is changing over the years. First I will point out the potential Trick-or-Treaters from 2007 to 2009. In 2007 there were 36.1 million in the United States but in 2010 there were 36 million. Less people are willing to go out trying to get candy from their neighbors, one tradition that many Americans have for Halloween. Compared to occupied houses in 2009 and 2010 there was a drop from 111.3 to 11.4. More people were not at home than the year before. There could be many reasons for this. Maybe they are working or maybe they were just at a party. Either way there were less places where kids could stop to get the yummy candy they look forward to. You might not think this is a major difference but if it continues to drop it might one day but it does show that there is a starting decline in Trick-or-Treaters. Another thing to look at is the stores and the candy. The amount of candy being sold went from 1billions pounds in 2007 to 931 million pounds in 2010. Less people are buying candy and it could be for the same reason that we didn’t buy much candy this year than last, there just weren’t any Trick-or-Treaters to take the candy. Also the amount of stores selling Halloween items went down from 2,011 to 1,184 from 2009 to 2010. There are less stores because there are not selling as much candy or costumes as before. They are not buying much candy or costumes like they did before because there aren’t many Trick-or-Treaters. It’s a vicious cycle.
Going about and getting candy is something we Americans love to do, going from house to house just to get some yummy candy. Also dressing up is the main thing that every little child does but there are less people buying the candy to give out, and less people going out to retrieve the candy. As you can see, compared to before Halloween isn’t as it used to be.
