| (Opt-in) - Quote :
- “The opt-in system, where people sign up to be donors if they die, reflects Christian concern to celebrate and support gracious gifts, freely given,” a statement by the Church’s Mission and Public Affairs Division said.
I agree that a person should have the Opt-in choice for donating organs. I know there are several families out there that wish to not donate any organs, for god created them with everything the body needs. And if by chance you need a new organ, then it’s only fair to say that your body is telling you something.
It’s hard to know what the donor is going through. Some people believe that donors show a sign of life before and organ is removed. This is associated with pain, which raises questions if they truly are. Figure it this way, in order to get an organ the person has to be almost dead for you to receive it. For it might save your life by killing another. You see when someone say is getting heart transplant, the patients heart has to still be beating by machines. Its possible that there could be some brain activity left in this person, to feel its heart being ripped out of their chest before they officially die.
Now let’s say that you decided to do a heart or any organ transplant, after this person officially died after giving you the organ it is fully possible that your body won’t accept the new organ due to the fact that your body attacks it thinking it’s a parasite or disease. There are just a few reasons that a person should have the choice about donating. It should never be chosen for you until you wish it to be. You wouldn’t want to be volunteered for something before you chose to volunteer. It just wouldn’t be right for someone to make a serious choice involving the death of someone else. This is why I fully support the Opt-in approach to donating.

| (Opt-out)
It is true that some people are fundamentally opposed to donating their organs. In the Jewish religion for example, we are allowed and it is even encouraged to donate organs that will help another while not harming the donor, such as donating a kidney. There are huge waiting lists for donors. Imagine if everyone was eligible unless they opted out. The lists would be so much shorter and so many lives could be saved!
Getting back to the religion issue, though, Jewish law prohibits desecrating a dead body. Therefore we are not allowed to donate vital organs (which would deem the person dead once they were donated) or even not-so-vital organs once the person is already dead. According to Jewish law, dead bodies are sacred and the complete body must be buried--after terrorist bombings in Israel, there is a special group that goes around to collect all the human bits scattered about for cleansing and burial...
But anyone who is Jewish and religious would know this, and would therefore sign up to NOT be eligible for organ donating. Everyone who was fundamentally opposed to donating their organs, for whatever reason, still has the option to OPT OUT. It's not like in Animal Farm where the poor old horse is sent off to the glue factory while he thinks he's being sent to a farm to live out his days in peace. We're not being fooled here. We're explicitly being told--your organs will be eligible for donating--unless you opt out. And if you want to opt out for whatever reason, you can and SHOULD.
Otherwise, if people just never signed up to be an organ donor because they just didn't get around to it, out of laziness, or because while they were alive it seemed to them to be a horrible thing to do--you think they care after they've died? It's not like their principles were against it. If they really cared, they would've opted out.
Another issue--all the people that choose to be cremated. Now gimme a break. You think THOSE people care what happens to their organs? Heck, they don't care what happens to their flesh! They want to be just ashes in a pot, or scattered over the ocean or whatever! You think they care if there is an inch less ashes in the pot?
That's why I agree with the opt-out system. If anyone really cared, they would opt out. If they didn't, it's a waste and a shame for all those people that die while on the waiting list for a heart, liver etc.
