A HE Guide Challenge

PART 1

HE is such a huge place that, in the beginning it can be overwheling and people might not know what to do, or where to go next.

This is where your help will come in handy.

I propose that you write a guide, explainning everything we have in HE.

Bear in mind that his is a guide to newbies and therefore, the first thing in your guide would be directing the newbie for the sorting hat and so on...

You must cover every forum and sub-forum of HE, I know it might sound like a lot but will be worth it I promise.

If there is any forum or subforum you don't what its purpose is, let me know and I will explain it.

PART 2

If we want to leave your guide pretty and appealing, some graphics would come in Handy to introduce every forum/sub-forum.

It should be something small and simple, either an avatar of 100x100 or a small banner of 50x300.

PART 1

Because I know this is a huge task, the amount of points will be huge too.

Everyone who posts a decente entry (I'm aware that might take more than one post) gets 10.000 points. Yes, 10.000!!!

The person who posts the most accurate, clear and glorifying guide to HE will win 15.000 or, if I'm really impressed 20.000!

PART 2

Since there are quite a lot of foruns/sub-foruns you could win a ton of points becuase you will get 100 points per graphic. Winning graphic gets 200.

I can't wait to see what you have in store for HE!

REMEMBER, YOU DON'T HAVE TO DO BOTH PARTS, YOU CAN CHOOSE TO DO ONE OR THE OTHER, OR BOTH!

PostSubject: Re: A HE Guide Challenge   A HE Guide Challenge EmptyTue Aug 30 2011, 10:41

Welcome to The Hogwarts Experience! We are so glad you decided to join us! To make navigating this site a little easier for you, let's start with the basics and work our way up from there.

A HE Guide Challenge Sortin10
Getting Sorted into your house: If you scroll just a tiny bit down the homepage, you will see a box that says "Welcome to Harry Potter- The Hogwarts Experience." You will notice that the word 'here' is underlined and in parenthesis. This is a link that, when clicked, will take you to where you can sign up to be sorted into your house. You will notice some Howlers and Post-It Notes, these are some helpful hints and facts about the sorting process. When you are ready to submit your name, click on where it says "Sorting Request Post," click in the empty box on the bottom of the page (this is the text box, for when you want to make new posts), write a little message along the lines of "I would like to be sorted please," and then click 'send' when you are done. When the sorting hat has made it's decision, there will be a new post following yours with a link in it for you to click to see where you were sorted.

Hogwarts Express and Sorting Hat: Now that you have submitted your name for sorting, click on the 'Home' button on the top left of the page (it is lit up and the first in a list of buttons). Next, scroll down a little and click on where it says 'Hogwarts Express and Sorting Hat.' You are now on the Hogwarts Express. Here there are also some Howlers and Post-It Notes with information and some fun getting-to-know-you activities. If you scroll down, you will see some threads people have opened to say hello and get to know other members of the site. If you would like to post one of your own, scroll to the bottom of the screen and click on the 'New Topic' button. You can title your post whatever you wish (as long as it is appropriate, don't be vulgar or swear), click on a topic icon if you would like to, and write your message in the empty box. There are smilies that you can look through and use whenever you want. Just click on the one you like, and it will enter itself into the text box. There are also editing buttons available right about the text box, and these buttons will be there every time you post. I will go over some of the more simple ones right now:

A HE Guide Challenge Text_b10

A HE Guide Challenge Text_b11

When you are done, if you wish to see what your message will look like before you submit it, you can click on 'preview.' When you are finished, click on 'send.' Now you have created your own thread, where members can welcome you to the site. Please remember that double posting (making more than one post one right after the other) is not allowed. Wait for someone else to respond before you post again, or look at your post, and click on the top right where it says 'edit.' Edit will allow you to add to your post, or delete things from it, without double posting.

Now it is time to review some of the rules of the site, and to read some of the guidelines. Look to the top of the page, where there is a line of back-lit buttons, and click on 'home.' Scroll down a little bit past the welcome message and click on 'Entrance Hall.'

A HE Guide Challenge Entran10
Entrance Hall: This contains many threads of rules and guidelines for the site. Go through them at your own pace. Take special note of Signature Rules and Guidelines thread, as this seems to be the thing that people need to reference back to the most.

If you look at the top of the page (where the lit buttons are), two buttons to the right of 'Home,' there is a 'FAQ' button. If you click on this, it also contains some answers to some common questions regarding the site.

When you are through, click on the home link at the top of the page, and scroll down to under the Hogwarts Express and Sorting Hat, and click on where it says 'Notice Board.'

A HE Guide Challenge Notice10
Notice Board: The Notice Board contains threads for: New updates, an explanation of the award point bar, The site's email address info, how to promote the site, a few different ways to earn house points, a thread to let everyone know when you will be absent for a while, info on double accounts, a thread for you to mention if you see something amiss on the site, a list of our affiliates, when applicable, there is a sign up thread to work on the Pensive (our version of a newsletter/magazine), the newest addition of the Pensive, and the thread that contains the annoucement for who won the house cup at the end of the term.

The notice board also has a lot of sub-forums. We will go through them one-by-one.

A HE Guide Challenge Hospit10
Hospital Wing: This is where to go if you have a question, and could not find the answer in the Entrance Hall, or under the FAQ. If you have a question, click on Hospital Wing, and you will see something called Recovery. Look around in there first to see if anyone else had already asked that question and recieved an answer. If no one did, then click on New Topic on the bottom of the page and follow the instructions to post a new thread that you followed in the Hogwarts Express. There are also some Howlers and Post-It Notes in here to look at. Check back often, as anyone from the site is allowed to answer your question if they know the answer.

A HE Guide Challenge Hohoff10
Head of House Office: If you have any suggestions for the site, this is where you can put them. There are two Howlers to read, one that shows you past suggestions (check this before you post yours) and tells you what to expect if you do make a suggestion, and one that says to make a poll within your suggestion post. Here is how to make a poll:

Click on the New Topic button like you have before. Fill it out as usual, and then scroll to the bottom, where it says 'add a poll.' Where it says 'Poll Question,' write the gist of your suggestion, "Should we...." Then, where it says 'Poll Option,' list the voting options on idividual lines. For example, write "yes" then hit enter on your keyboard; then write "no" underneath the "yes." Leave the space that says 'Run Poll For' blank, keep the other two options at 'no,' and if you are finished, hit send. Don't forget you can preview it first. See example below.

A HE Guide Challenge How_to10
A HE Guide Challenge How_to11

A HE Guide Challenge Momban10
The Ministry of Magic: This is where announcements are made about staff changes, and where new available staff positions, new class policies, student of the year, head boy and girl, and house prefects are posted. Though head boy and girl and house prefects are not always appointed.

A HE Guide Challenge Record10
Hall of Records: This is where you can find site records to break for house points. There are a few Howlers and Post-It Notes to read, and a list of the records. You can also suggest new records. Click on each one to see what they are and what must be done to break them. They do require you to post links to the assignments/challenges etc, that you complete, so I will show you an example of how to do that.

Example: The Student-a-holic record. This record requires you to do more homework assignments than the previous record holder. To prove you have done the assignments, you must list them as links, this will be the same for every challenge listed. Here is how to do that: use the text box on the bottom of the page as usual, this time, however, you will be using another editing button. Once you have turned in your class assignment in the proper classroom thread, copy the web page address. Then you will paste it into the text box in the Student-a-holic thread like this:

A HE Guide Challenge How_to12

A HE Guide Challenge Awardf10
Award Forum: In this forum (when it is active) you can see past awards results, vote for awards, and suggest new awards to give site members.

A HE Guide Challenge Firepl10
Fireplace: This is where old notices are posted.

A HE Guide Challenge Flooba10
Floo Network: This is where you will find links to things pertaining to the site. There are links for: The Hogwarts Quill (the site for writer's of fan fiction), different chat rooms, the site's social networking accounts, the podcast (when it is running), the site's timeline (though it only goes to 2007), the yearbook, and the Daily Ongoing Funtrivia Challenge Tournament (where you can go daily to answer trivia questions for house points).

A HE Guide Challenge Winner10
Hogwarts Winner's Cups: This contains links to different awards rooms throughout the site.

Now we will go through the homepage:

A HE Guide Challenge Homepa10
The homepage: Running along the top of the homepage is the site's banner. Underneath that there is a row of back-lit buttons.

The Home button will take you back to the homepage.

The Calendar button will take you to a calendar that contains the birthday of any member that submitted their birthday on their profile.

The FAQ button takes you to a list of Frequently Asked Questions about the site.

The Search button allows you to search the site for any key words.

The Members button has a list of all of the members of the site. It will also show you what ranking you are as far as number of posts you have made. To see what number you rank, go to the drop down menu next to 'sort by' and choose 'number of posts,' then hit 'okay.' The member list will be rearranged in order of what member has the most posts, to what member has the least. Scroll through the list to find yourself. This is just for fun, some people find it fun to keep track of their ranking.

A HE Guide Challenge Profil10
The Profile button will take you to your own individual profile.

Your Profile: There are several tabs running along the top.

Information: Your username will be listed, as well as your e-mail address. If you wish to change your password at any time, this is where you can do so. Under where it says 'personalized profile' is the information that will show up for the rest of the site to see every time you make a post. This information is all optional. First is your gender, then your birthday (if you include your birthday, then your age will show up next to all of your posts, not your birthday), your location (do not give away your hometown, just the country/state, or a made up location), your real first name (no last names and this doesn't have to be your actual real first name if you don't want to share it), your country (just click on the bubble next to your country's flag), your house (this can also say things like Gryffindor at heart if you were not sorted into Gryffindor), any comments you wish to share (there is a word count limit), the crest for your house (again, click on the bubble next to the crest, this is helpful for staff members assigning points to you), a status (look at some other member's status' as this can be many things, but there is a word count limit). Underneath this information is space for you to share any links to your websites and instant messaging usernames, these will also show up next to your posts. When you have finished adding everything you wish to add, click on the 'save' button at the bottom of the page.

Preferences: This contains a list of preferences for your user settings and is where you can choose your language and date/time. Again, hit 'save' when you are done.

Signature: This is where you can add the words and graphic that will appear at the bottom of your posts. Remember to look at the rules in the Entrace Hall regarding signatures before you post one. You can upload pictures/graphics, and pick out any text you may want. Hit 'preview' to see what it will look like, and 'save' when you are done.

Avatar: This is the smaller graphic that shows up next to your name. You can make one of your own (no bigger than 100x100 pixels), or use one from the gallery. Hit 'save' when you are done.

Topics Being Watched: If you have elected to watch any topics (threads) for replies, this is where they will be listed. To watch a topic (thread) go to the bottom of the page (where you would enter your post) and click on this link:

A HE Guide Challenge Topics10

Drafts: If you have created a draft anywhere, this is where you can continue to work on it, and then publish it when you are done. For example, if you are doing an assignment in one of the classrooms, you would begin to type in the text box, as usual. If you do not have time to finish it, hit 'preview,' and then hit 'draft' (which is in-between 'preview' and 'send' on the preview page).

RPG Forum: Great Hall: This is where you can list information about your RPG characters that you would like to show up everytime you make a post. Remember to hit 'save' when you are done.

HQ: This takes you to another site, which is the Hogwarts Experience's Hogwarts Quill, a site for people who enjoy reading and writing fan fiction. The layout is the same as this site, and each forum has it's own rules and guidelines.

Log Out/ Log In: If you are logged in and click this, it will log you out. If you are logged out and click this, it will take you to where you can sign in.

A HE Guide Challenge Owlpos10
The little flying owl: When clicked, this takes you to the site's personal messaging system.

Inbox: To send someone an owl (message), you can either click on the little owl that appears at the bottom of their posts, or you can click 'new topic' in the inbox window. Once you have clicked 'new topic,' the window that comes up is exactly the same as when you post in a thread. The only difference being that you can look up someone's username with the 'find a username' button. You have to put something on the subject line for the message to send. On the inbox menu, towards the bottom, take speical note of the difference between delete marked and delete all. Many of us have accidentaly erased our whole inbox by pressing the wrong button. If you want to send a message in your inbox to your savebox, so that you can't accidentaly erase it, click on the little select box, and then chose save marked.

Sentbox: This is where you can view messages you have sent to people that they have opened.

Outbox: This is where you can view messages you have sent to people that they still haven't opened. This and the sentbox are useful if you are interested in whther or not someone read your message yet.

There is a box on the top right side of the messaging system that tells you how full (percentage wise) your inbox is.

Homepage cont.:
The box right underneath the lit up buttons on the top of the homepage contains links. The first one takes you to the thread where the newest announcents are made. The button that says #The_Hogwarts_Experience currently has # users, takes you to the site's java chat.

On the top left of the homepage, there is a box that shows you your screename, your avatar, how many posts you have made, how many new messages you have, and it has a link to your profile.

Right under that is a box that shows the current house point totals.

Under that is a box that shows who the headmaster/mistress and different heads of house are.

Under that shows who the current head students and prefects are (when applicable).

Under that is a list of all the different classes and their respective professors.

Under that is a box that shows who the current Student of the Year is.

Under that is a live feed fro the site's twitter account (when applicable).

Under that is a list of all the terms the site has been in existence, and which house won the House Cup and the Quidditch cup for each term.

Under that is a link to the Daily Trivia site, where you can answer trivia questions for house points.

Under that is a list of the latest topics (threads) that have been posted on. If you click on the name of the thread, it will take you to the lastest post.

Under that is a link for people who wish to make a donation to the site.

Under that is a image link to use if you would like to affiliate the site with your own website.

Under that is a list of links to our affiliates.

At the very bottom of the home page is, first, a box that contains: how many users are online, and if they are a member, their name, a list of members who have been on in the last 72 hours, a list of people with upcoming birthdays, a legend that shows you what the different colored usernames mean, and a line that shows you how many people are in the chatbox.

Under this box, is the chatbox. If someone is in there, their name will appear under the word 'chatbox.' If you would like to join in, click the log in button.

A HE Guide Challenge Classe10
Hogwarts Experience Classes: Here is where you can go to explore the different classrooms, and complete assignments for house points. Each class has it's own Post-It Notes and Howlers placed there by the professors that explain how the individual class works. You do not have to sign up for classes before you complete assignments, you can just jump on it. Anyone can do any classes (except Dark Arts, you must be 17 to sign up), and the assignments are always open, there are no more due dates. If you have not been sorted into a house yet, don't worry, you can still do class assignments, and your professors will assign points after your sorting is complete. Remember, that unless stated otherwise by the professor, the no double poisting rule also applies to the classrooms. If an assignment requires anything special, there will be instructions, or, you can send your professor an owl. You will notice, that at the bottom of everyone's post, there is an owl. Click on it, and it will allow you to send messages to individual people. If the class assignment asks you to post a picture, here is how to do that:

A HE Guide Challenge Save_a10

A HE Guide Challenge Save_a11

There is also a Library thread, where you can write essays for extra points, just be sure to read all of the Howlers/ Post-It Notes before you begin writing one.

A HE Guide Challenge Challe10
Challenge Chamber: This contains challenges that you can complete for house points. There is a thread to suggest challenges, a list of past winners, and another link to the Fun Trivia Ongoing Daily Quiz Tournament. Just make sure to read the rules of the individual challenge carefully before completion.

A HE Guide Challenge Examba10
Examination Waiting Room: When you reach different years, you can begin to complete different exams. These exams are: Wand (get your own wand), Apparition (get your liscense to apparate), Animagus (become an animagus), Disillusionment (learn to become invisible), and OWL (just like in the books). There are also threads where you can congratulate the people who have recently completed these exams. The exams all have multiple parts to complete, but this is just the sign up room. Each thread says what year you have to be to sign up for that particular exam (you cannot do any until you are at least a second year). They will all also earn you house points. When you are ready, click on the thread for the exam, and sign up. You won't be able to access the actual exam room until you have been added by the headmaster, and he is usually really busy, so be patient with him. There will be a new post in the thread when your name has been added to that exam, so just keep an eye out.

Hogwarts Experience Exams: When your name has been added to an exam, this is where you will go to begin working on it. Each exam has its own set of requirements, so read the Howlers/ Post-It Notes carefully. There are also two exams that are not available yet : Patronus and Occlumency/Legillmency. Staff members are still working on these ones.

A HE Guide Challenge Towerb10
Your House's Tower: Depending on what house you are placed in, your house tower will appear next. Each house has its own set of games/challenges/participation thread/question threads, so just take a look around, and if you have any questions, send your heads of house an owl.

A HE Guide Challenge Points10
Housepoints: This is where the list of running totals for individual house members is kept. There is a Post-It Note that shows you how many award bar points you will get for being a top point winner for your house, a Post-It Note that lists each year's top house point winner for the entire site, and a seperate thread for each house. Click on your house to see a list of members and their current house points (list is periodically updated, so if all of your points don't seem to be there, don't worry, they will be eventually). Each house thread also shows a list of the top house point earners each term for that particualr house. At the end of the term look here to see if you were one of them. The Purple Elf house is a thread for the former Head Mistress to keep track of any points she may earn/recieve throughout the term. Sometimes these points are awarded to different members for different things. The Purple Elf house thread is not a thread you need to worry about.

A HE Guide Challenge Quiddi10
Qudditch: When the Quidditch cup is running, and not on hold, this is where it is held. There are threads to show when the games are going to be, past matches, sign ups, rules and regulations, and separate threads for the different ongoing games (again, when they are running). When the games are being held, you do not need to be a member of the team to participate, as there is also usually a thread for spectators to cheer everyone on.

A HE Guide Challenge Eventb10
Event Forum: Keep an eye on this forum throughout the year, because when they are running, these events are an excellent place to rack up large amounts of house points. There are threads for sign ups, past winners, past events, and suggestions. There is also a sub forum for a second event. These events are not always running, so be sure to check back every so often.

A HE Guide Challenge Badgeb10
Badge Burrow: Here, you can complete different badges for house points. There are Howlers and Post-It Notes toward the bottom of the page that have information about the forum, a thread for questions, how to print screen, to make suggestions, a list of the bonus badges you can earn, and how to save a draft of what you are working on. There is also a Post-It Note for the badge gold, silver, and bronze placements. The members who do the most badges within the term earn extra points depending on whether or not they won gold, silver, or bronze. Under all of this, there are two threads: one for suggestions, and one that contains information on the Burrow Backyard.

There are several sub forums:

The Badge Display Case is exactly what it sounds like. When you have completed a badge, and it has been graded, a new thread will be opened in here under your screen name. This is where a list of all the badges you have completed will be kept by the head master. You do not have to do anything in your thread except look at it to see your lovely badges.

The next 5 are the different levels of badges. You will begin in Level 1. Make sure to look at the Post-It Note first, because it contains the very first badge you must do before working on the others. After you have completed that badge, you can scroll through and complete any badge that catches your eye. Levels 2-5 will tell you which badges you must complete before you can do them. For example, to do the Circus Performer Advanced Badge in Level 2, it tells you you must first complete the Circus Performer Badge in Level 1. Each badge tells you it's own requirements, but if you ever have any questions, you post them in the questions thread, or just send an owl to any staff member. The staff members are those listed as class professors on the left side of any page you are on.

The Burrow Backyard is mainly for people working on badges that require them to post about spirit week, such as the hand badges.

A HE Guide Challenge Greath10
Great Hall: This forum is for RPG. There are Howlers and Post-It Notes for rules, character workshops, reporting unused threads, questions, the master story line, and a place to keep track of new story lines. There is also one that contains a master list of all of the characters. The two sub forums are the Hogwarts Castle and Grounds, and The Wizarding World. They each have their own sub forums and rules. This is where you will do your RPGing. To add a new story line, you will add a New Topic, like you did on the Hogwarts Express. The Great Hall does not earn you any house points, it is just for fun.

A HE Guide Challenge Duelli10
Duelling Tournaments: When the dueling tournament is running, this is where you can sign up, ask questions, and read the instructions and rules, and participate in the duels for house points. You can also see a list of past winners, and in the subforum, see all of the past duels themselves. There is no harm in signing up, even if the duels are not currently running.

A HE Guide Challenge Debate10
Debate and Discussion Classroom: When it is running, this is where you can go to participate in debates for house points. There is a thread for sign ups, to exaplain the point system, for an expanation of the process, to ask questions, to suggest debates, and to explain about discussions. When the debates are running, there will be threads for participation, but there is a sub forum where you can look at past debates any time you want.

A HE Guide Challenge Quillb10
The Hogwarts Quill: If you enjoy writing, this is the place for you! Among other things, there are tournaments and challenges to participate in for house points. There are Howlers and Post-It Notes for tournament sign ups, information on the forum, a place to announce tournament winners, a place to post ideas for challenges, and information on reviewing member's fictions for house points. To participate in tournaments, sign up in the corresponding sign up thread, and go ahead and begin. You do not have to wait to be added to begin participating, just putting your name down is enough. There are separate threads for each tournament and challenge, and each thread will contain the rules and guidelines for that particular tournament/challenge. There is also a thread to talk to other members about what you are currently writing, a thread to promote your fictions, and a thread to recommend stories to other members to read. The sub forum contains past challenges and tournaments that you can look through. This forum is associated with, but separate from the actual Hogwarts Quill website.

A HE Guide Challenge Graphi10
Graphics Forum: This forum contains Howlers and Post-It Notes for tournament sign ups, tournament instructions, help on graphics, information about the forum, announcement of tournament winners, and your thoughts and opinions. As with the sign ups for the Quill tournaments, once your name is down, you can begin participating. There are threads for each of the different tournaments going on, the challenges that are going on, a thread with a list of free graphics programs, and different threads about making graphics, and sharing graphics you have made.

There are 3 sub forums

Graphics Tutorials and Requests: This is where you can either share a tutorial you have written about how to do a certain graphic, or participate in tutorials that others have posted to help your graphic making skills get even better. You can earn house points for posting new tutorials, and you may request certain tutorials be made. There is a sub forum in here so that you can ask certain site members to make you a graphic in their spare time.

Graphics Showcase: If you wish to create an album so that you can share the graphics you have made with other members, this is where you will post a New Topic. Be sure to read the Howler about the rules before you post anything. You may also comment on other member's graphics in this forum, but there are rules about that also, mainly to make sure you are respectful.

Past Graphics Challenges: You may look through this forum at the past challenges.

A HE Guide Challenge Artist10
Artist Alley: If you enjoy art, take a look around. There are challenges, threads about artists, a thoughts and opinions thread, and an inspiration thread. This is similar to the Graphics Showcase forum, in that this is where you can create an album to showcase your art.

A HE Guide Challenge Photob10

There are Howlers and Post-It Notes to read, and there are also threads for the current challenges, tips for beginners, your favorite photographers, your thoughts and opinions, discussions, and information on post processing. If you wish to see threads regarding the books, go to book discussions, about the movies, go to film discussions. Just be sure to be respectful if someone else has a different opinion from your own about something.

A HE Guide Challenge Walksb10
Hogwarts Walks: This is where you can discuss different ships (relationships) that you like. There is a Howler to read with information about the forum, and two sub forums. One of the subforums is Harry Potter ships, where you can discuss different relationships in Harry Potter. You can post a new thread if yours doesn't already exist, and please remember to be respectful to the other members' opionions. The second sub forum is for discussions of any relationships outside of the world of Harry Potter.

A HE Guide Challenge Commun10
Hogwarts Community: This contains a lot, so we will go through it slowly. This is where you can interact with members from any of the houses. There are Howlers and Post-It Notes for sharing your photos, congratulating people when they move up a year, signing in to the main chat room so that others know you are there (this is optional), congratulating people on their awards points, celebrating member's birthdays, and a common room where you can chat with the entire site (not just your house members). There are also pages of other threads about many general topics, feel free to look through them and post around. If there is not a general thread that you think should be there, you may add it yourself.

There are also many sub forums.

A HE Guide Challenge He_ban10

Welcome, to the Hogwarts Experience! We are so glad to have you here with us, and in order to make your life easier (as we know the site is a bit overwhelming at first), we'll be giving you a little tour of the site to help you figure out how everything works on the site. Your tour guide today will be Bobbina, who will take you through the basics first and then everything HE has to offer. Just remember, never tickle a Purple Hippo!

A HE Guide Challenge Thesortinghat
First things first, it's time for you to step into the Great Hall and be sorted into your house! Sorting is a very important step of your journery, as the House you are sorted into will become your family as you traverse to win the House Cup together. To be entered for Sorting, you'll need to go to the Sorting Request Post. While I've provided a link for you, it's important that you're able to find it yourself as well. There are two ways to do this, the first is to look just below the Announcement Board (located right below the HE banner) where you'll see a welcome message that includes a link to the Sorting. The second way is to go by forum; click on the second forum (Hogwarts Express and Sorting Hat), then at the top of the forum, you'll see a sub forum titled The Sorting Hat; that is where you'll find the Sorting Request Post.

Now that you're in the mighty prescence of the Sorting Hat, you may leave a little message to the Hat requesting sorting by pressing the "Add Reply" button in the top left hand corner of the forum. Please note, do not request a House. Sorting is done at random and ensures that each House has an equal number of members, so requests are not taken into account.

Sortings are done on Thursdays and Sundays so check back to see what House you've been placed in, but remember, you do not need to wait to be assigned a House in order to complete House Point Earning events! When you're Sorting has been completed, your House assignment can be found in the Sorting List. Good luck!

A HE Guide Challenge Postingonhe
We know that all the buttons on HE can be a little confusing before you get to know them, so we're going to take a quick break from the tour to go over how to post, and what each button does.

To Start a New Topic: To open a new thread, you'll need to click the New Topic button. These can be found in the top left corner of the forum, and the bottom left corner of the forums.

A HE Guide Challenge 2-NewTopic-1

To Reply to a Topic: In order to respond to posts in a thread, click the Add Reply button which is found next to the New Topic at the bottom of the forum. You may also use the Quick Respond box found at the bottom of each thread (above the Add Reply button) which allows you to post a response directly from that thread.

A HE Guide Challenge 3-AddReply

General Posting Options: Once you've reached the Posting box, you can write your resopnse. First we're going to go through where all your options are while posting before we work out what each button does.

A HE Guide Challenge 4-generaloptions

Buttons: Now that you know where everything is, let's take a look at what each button does.

A HE Guide Challenge 5-firstsetbuttons A HE Guide Challenge 6-secondsetbuttons

A HE Guide Challenge 7-thirdsetbuttons A HE Guide Challenge 8-fourthsetbuttons

Option and Adding a Poll: For more options and to insert a poll, look below the Preview, Draft and Send button where you'll see two long rectangular boxes, one marked "Options" the other "Add a Poll" (only available when adding a topic). All the way on the right of these boxes you'll see a small plus sign; click the plus sign and the menu will expand to allow you to add a poll or change options.

A HE Guide Challenge Otherpostingoption
If for any reason the HTML, BBCode, or smilies are not showing up properly in your post, be sure to check under the options tab (as discussed in adding a poll) to be sure that each of those three things are on, which can be seen in the left side of the box. If they are not, you should see options that can be checked: be sure that the boxes marked "disable" are not checked, and try posting again.

A HE Guide Challenge 9-OptionsToolbar

To be notified when a reply has been posted in that topic, check the box that says "notify me when a reply is posted", and an email will be sent when someone has done so. To turn this function off, you may uncheck the box, or click the "stop watching this topic" button at the bottom of the thread page beneath the page numbers.

A HE Guide Challenge 10-Stopwatchingthistopic

A HE Guide Challenge 2optionsforalreadymadeposts
Now that you know how each of the posting buttons work, let’s take a look at what posts look like in the actual thread. The tools for editing posts can be found at the top right edge of your post:

A HE Guide Challenge 11-editbar

The first button, called “multiquote” allows you to select more than one posts by separate users in your reply. Simply click the button on each post you want to quote in your new post (the stars at the top will turn red) and then click the reply button at the bottom.

A HE Guide Challenge 12-multiquote

The second button is the “quote” button, which allows you to quote only one reply from a poster in your new post. Simply clicking the button will take you to the reply menu.

The third button is for editing your post. Since there is a strict no double posting rule on the site, this button comes in handy for placing anything you forgot to say into the post or editing any typos.

The fourth button is the “delete button”. This will allow you to delete any of your own posts that you no longer want in a thread. For example, if you have accidently double posted, it’s a good idea to edit the original post to include what you have in the second, then delete the unneeded post.

Finally, the “report” button will allow you to report to an administrator if a post includes anything inappropriate or offensive so they can take further action.

Underneath the report button on other members posts, you’ll see a small bar with a plus or minus button.

A HE Guide Challenge 13-reputation

This is for reputation sites around the site. If a member has helped you out with a problem, or said something you strongly agree with in a debate, for example, pressing the “+” button will turn the bar green, and that user will gain one reputation point. If someone has said something offensive, pressing the “-“ button will cause them to lose one reputation points. These points show up on the sidebar profile (which we will be taking a look at next), as well as on the user’s profile. In some cases, in forums such as the hospital wing, giving a thumbs up to the answer that helped you out the most will turn the post green and give them four points. This is called the “thanks” option, and looks like a thumbs up.

A HE Guide Challenge 21-thankyou

Underneath each member’s post, there is a bar where all the contact information they have entered into their profile can be seen.

A HE Guide Challenge 14-contactinfo-1

The most important buttons to be aware of is the “profile” button, which takes you to that member’s profile, and the owl, which allows you to send a private message to that user. The rest of the contact information is for email, msn messenger, yahoo, and a website page. Finally, to see if a user is currently online, look at the end of this bar: if a user is online, it should say “online now”.

A HE Guide Challenge 15-onlinenow

A HE Guide Challenge 3sidebarprofile
Now let’s take a look at the information on the sidebar profile (we’ll get into editing this sidebar later). The first half is devoted to personal information, such as gender, age, number of posts, location, name, country and house. Above the member’s avatar, you can see the year the member is in, or, in the case of staff, what job they have around the site.

A HE Guide Challenge 16-profile

In the second half of the profile, you can see more information about them from the site.

A HE Guide Challenge 17-profile2

The warning bar is used to show other member’s if the user has ever done something to receive a warning: this could be from offensive material, double posting, spam, ect. If they have, the bar will be filled up to show how many warnings they’ve received. By hovering your mouse over the bar, you can see the specific number, which is out of three. Once a user receives more than three warnings, more severe actions will be taken from a temporary suspension to banning, depending on the offense.

The second bar is the award bar, used to show member’s how active they are in helping out around the site. This bar is out of 100 points, and points can be earned based on outstanding achievement, help around the site, or staff recommendation. Once a user has reached 100 points, they receive an Award for Special Services to the School.

Below the award bar, you’ll see the Contribution Points. These points are given depending on the forum in which you are posting. For example, every post you make in the Hogwarts Community forum, you receive one contribution point, you receive three for posting in class forums, but you receive none for posting in the games forum.

Below the contribution points is the Reputation points, which, as discussed earlier are given when you vote “+” on a post, or give thanks for help.

Underneath that is the user’s status, which is personalized by the user.

Finally, there is a spot for the RPG (role playing) character sheet to appear in the profile. I will go into how to edit this in the section on editing Profiles.

Before we move on to the main toolbar, let’s take a brief look at other options you have in the thread. If you scroll up to the top of the thread, on the right side of the screen you’ll see a tab that says “Actions”. When clicked, a pop up menu will appear with several options for you to take that can help you narrow down a search in the thread. You can also add the thread to your favourites, which will then appear in your profile (which we will get into later). By pressing the “Share” tab, you can share the pave with a number of blogs and other applications.

A HE Guide Challenge 21-thankyou

A HE Guide Challenge Themaintoolbar
Now that you know how to post and use the options in the thread, let’s get to work on Navigating around the site. The main toolbar can be found at the top of the site, and is used for many things. Let’s take a closer look at each one:
A HE Guide Challenge 18-maintoolbar

A HE Guide Challenge 4home
The home button will take you back to the main page of the site, where all the forums can be seen.

A HE Guide Challenge 5-calendar
The calendar button will take you to the site’s calendar, where all the member’s birthdays can be seen.

A HE Guide Challenge 6faq
The FAQ button will take you to the Frequently Asked Questions menu where help can be found for Hogwarts Experience Specific FAQ, Login and Registration Issues, User Preferences and Settings, Posting Issues, Formatting and Topic Types, User Levels and Groups, Private Messaging, and Forum Issues.

A HE Guide Challenge 7search
The search button will bring up a mini toolbar that will allow you to enter key words to find a specific thread or topic.

A HE Guide Challenge 8members
This button will take you to a list of all the members on HE. You can change how the users are sorted by clicking drop down member in “sort by” so you can see members based off of last visit, registration date, username, house, number of posts, web site, and usergroup.

A HE Guide Challenge 19-members

A HE Guide Challenge 9groups
The groups button will take you to a list of all the groups you are currently in, as well as an application for joining new ones. Groups are used in HE to define your house, what tournament your in, as well as access to examination (which we’ll get into later).

A HE Guide Challenge Editingyourprofile
This button is extremely important, as it allows you to edit several things about your profile. When you click on this button, it will automatically take you to the Informational part of your profile. This is where you can edit anything from your password, to your house and country as well as preferences.

Here are all the areas that can be edited in your profile. I will go through each one separately to give you an idea how they work.

A HE Guide Challenge 20-profiletab

When you click on the “Preferences” tab, it will take you to a list of options that can be checked or unchecked about things around the site. I would suggest taking a close look at each of these to be sure you don’t have a problem with any, but I will go through some that commonly cause problems if overlooked. Towards the bottom of the options, there are several regarding your signature, BBCcode, and HTML. Be sure these are all checked, or these things will not show up in your posts, meaning you can not bold, italicize or underling things, or insert pictures into messages. I would also be sure that the boxes for allowing users to private message you and to be sent a newsletter are checked “Yes” as well. The rest are very personal and depend on what you prefer, but if you ever have questions on any, feel free to contact a staff member to give you more information.

The next tab is the “Signature” tab. When you click this button, you’ll be taken to a page that contains what looks exactly like the new posts menu; it functions the exact same way too. Here you can add text or pictures to your signature in the same way you’d do so for a normal post. Remember, when inserting pictures, you must use BBCode. For example, in order to get my signature, I needed to enter:

Code:
 [center] [img]http://i829.photobucket.com/albums/zz216/kitkat736/safeandsound.png[/img]
[img]http://i62.servimg.com/u/f62/11/42/68/88/hptopw12.png[/img] [font=Trebuchet MS]
[color=yellow][b]H U F F L E P U F F  P R I D E[/b][/center][/font][/color]

Please remember, in an effect to keep each page loading quickly, the total width of images must not exceed 450 pixels and the total height of images must not exceed 350 pixels.

A HE Guide Challenge 10avatar
The avatar tab allows you to update the picture that shows up in the sidebar tool in your posts. This is much easier to do than the signature, as you have several options on how this can be performed, which range from uploading the picture from your computer to entering a specific url.

A HE Guide Challenge 11topicsbeingwatched
This tab brings you to a list of all the topics you are watching (meaning you get emails sent when users respond to them). This is an easy way to stop watching several threads at once, by checking the boxes, so you don’t have to go to each individual and turn it off manually, as shown in “Other Posting Options” above.

A HE Guide Challenge 12favourites
This tab brings you to a list of all your Favourite threads, as discussed in “Other Posting Options” above.

A HE Guide Challenge 13draft
This tab is incredibly important if you make a lot of long posts that you can’t always finish and need to get back to. As discussed in General Posting Options, you can save a post as a draft, and this is where you can find it again. To modify a draft to be published, simply click the “modify” button. If you no longer want that post, you also have the option of deleting the draft, but remember, once deleted, you cannot get it back.

A HE Guide Challenge 14rpgforumgreathall
Finally, this is the last area you can edit on your profile. As discussed in the side bar profile, you have an area devoted to making a role playing character. In this tab, you can edit the name, age, race, description, and side as well as a description for the character, which you can then use in the Great Hall forum, which is completely devoted to role playing.

A HE Guide Challenge Yourfinishedprofile
While we’re on the subject of profiles, let’s take a quick break from the main toolbar to look at your completed profile. This can be done by clicking the “profile” button beneath a post, as discussed earlier, or simply clicking on a user’s username anywhere on the site.

A HE Guide Challenge 23-profile

When you click on someone’s profile, you’re automatically taken to the “Profile” tab. This is where all the information that you entered in the “Information” tab appears, and what shows up on your sidebar profile in each post you make. You can also make edits by hovering your mouse over the text; a little green and orange arrow will appear, which, when clicked, will allow you to edit just that field.

A HE Guide Challenge 15visitorsmessages
The visitor’s messages tab will take you to a personalized “thread” that’s just for users posting to you. Similar to a wall on facebook, it allows you to post public messages to another user. If you do not wish the message to be public, it is better to send a private message, which we will be talking about soon.

A HE Guide Challenge 16statistics
The statistics tab will take you to a series of data regarding the number of points, contribution points, reputation points, and other information that you may be interested in. It provides a wide variety of averages that can be looked at, as well as a link to your visitor’s messages page.

A HE Guide Challenge 17contact
The contact tab will take you to a list of all the user’s contacts. When you click on the icons, it will also open up an email, private message, IM, or website that it has been linked to.

A HE Guide Challenge 14rpgforumgreathall
Finally, the description you made of your role playing character can be seen here as well as edited. When done editing, simply click the “modify” button to save.

A HE Guide Challenge 19HQ
Heading back to the main toolbar, the HQ button will send you to The Hogwarts Quill, our other site devoted solely to fan-fictions, novels, poetry, anything to do with writing that you wish to share with other members. I would definitely suggest taking a few minutes to explore the Quill, as there are some fantastic works that have been put up.

A HE Guide Challenge 20logout
The log out button will, of course, log you out of the site. Pressing the “log in” button will bring you to the page to log back into the site.

A HE Guide Challenge 21theowl
By clicking this owl, you will be taking to your Private Messages, which is similar to email. It’s completely private, so personal conversations can take place in here. To send a new private message, click “New Topic”, and to reply to a message, click “Add Reply” just as you would with any post. You can save or delete messages by clicking said buttons underneath the message.

Your inbox shows all the messages you received, the sentbox shows all the messages that have been opened, the outbox shows messages that have yet to be opened, and the savebox shows you any messages you’ve saved.

When you receive a new message, the owl will hold a red letter and, if you’ve checked the box in your profile preferences, a pop-up will alert you to the new message.

A HE Guide Challenge 24-owl

A HE Guide Challenge Theportal
Before we get into what each forum on the site contains, I’d like to draw your attention to the portal on the left side of the forum on every page. This consists of several widgets that are important to be aware of, as they contain a lot of information.

First, your avatar, amount of posts, and private messages can be seen at the very top, along with a link to your profile.

HE Daily Trivia

This box allows you to like our page on facebook, and also links you to the facebook page where updates are given.

Send Us a Donation

Affiliate With Us
Do you have a website of you own? Or do you know someone who has a website? This box has information on how to become an affiliate and get your icon placed on our list of affiliate sites.

Who is online?
If you scroll all the way down to below the last forum, you should see a box that says “The Members of the Hogwarts Experience”. This is where information regarding how many users currently online can be found, as well as members who have been on in the last 72 hours, and users having a birthday in the next week. This is a great way to see who’s online to chat with you, and also to see who you need to say Happy Birthday to!

Chatbox
Below the members box, there is the site’s Chatbox. This is an IM system specifically for HE members. Simply press the “log in” button to be added to the chat, where you can then talk to members who are on at the same time as you.

Java Chat
Along with the chatbox, HE also has a Java Chat account set up, which is the more commonly used instant messaging around the site. To reach the java chat, simply click here, or scroll up to the top of the page, under the main toolbar, and click #The_Hogwarts_Experience.

A HE Guide Challenge Thehogwartsexperience

Congratulations! Now that you know everything there is to know about how to navigate and post around the forum, we can get started on the fun stuff: what each forum does.

The forums in this section of the site are all very important for information regarding the site, sorting, updates, links, and special trophies and awards for members.

A HE Guide Challenge 22theentrancehall
This forum is important for everyone, both new and old, and it’s essential that you read through all the threads here carefully. It has information from rules and regulations to signature guidelines and safety information.

A HE Guide Challenge 23thenoticeboard
The Notice Board is one of the best forums to check on a regular basis. It contains information on a variety of things such as ways to help out and promote the site, double accounts, ways to earn housepoints, a place to post if you will be going away for a while and won’t be able to post, a sign-up for the Hogwarts Pensieve, the HE newspaper, as well as the latest editions, and a place to post when you vote for HE on topsites, as was discussed earlier. It also contains a thread that shows whose receiving award points and for what achievements. Most importantly, however, is the term announcements (which is viewable in every forum) and updated every time a new event, staff, or tournament is opened, among other things. The Notice Board also contains several sub-forums, which I will go into in greater detail.

Suggested Threads: Year 5 Announcements and Updates

A HE Guide Challenge 24thehospitalwing
Are you having a problem around the site that you just can’t figure out? Did the FAQ fail to answer your question? Have no fear! Simply stop by the Hospital Wing, where you can ask any questions or concerns you have about the site for other members to answers. In the Hospital Wing, you should see a sub-forum marked “Recovery”. Be sure to scroll through the threads in there first, as that’s where answered questions are placed, and one may contain the answer you’re looking for. If you don’t see your question in there, feel free to start a new topic and someone will attempt to help you. If you found someone’s answer particularily helpful, be sure to give them that thumbs up to thank them!

Suggested Threads: Has it Been Asked Before?

A HE Guide Challenge 25headsofhouseoffice
Here at HE, we’re always looking to make the site even better, and your suggestions are always taken seriously and considered. Come in to the Heads of House Office to voice your suggestion, but be sure to look over what suggestions have already been made to be sure yours hasn’t already been suggested and denied by someone else. Also, be sure to make your suggestion as a poll (see “Adding a Poll”) so that it can be voted on by members to see popularity.

A HE Guide Challenge 27hallofrecords
We love to award members for the hours of hard work they put into various activities around the site, and the Hall of Records is one of those ways. There are currently eight records you can hold: biggest tournament participant, most stories written record, most challenges accomplished record, student-a-holic-record (most classes), ultra-student-a-holic award (most exams), teachers’-pet-a-holic record (most essays), graphics-a-holic record, and perfect-wannabe record (most welcoming to new members like yourself). To be in the running for these records, you’ll need to give specific examples to prove you’ve done all of the item. For example, if you are trying to win the Ultra-Student-a-Holic record, you’d need to post links to each of the exams you completed this term. There are two ways you can do this:

The first is to use the link button in the toolbar above the message body. The first space with the picture of the link is for the actual web address, and the second line is for whatever you want the text to say (circled in red). For example, if you wanted a link to say “New Topic” you’d do the following:

A HE Guide Challenge New_to10

The second way is to just type out the code (it will turn out to be the same thing so just do whatever you’re more comfortable with) but the code is:

Code:
 [url=*insertwebadress*]*inserttext*[/url]
Ex. [url=http://hogwarts-experience.heavenforum.org/post.forum?mode=newtopic&f=14]New Topic[/url]

And then it’ll look like this:

Now leaving the Notice Board, let’s take a look at the Floo Network. The Floo Network gives you the opportunity to travel to various places outside of HE that are still part of us, such as the Hogwarts Quill (our site dedicated to stories and fanfictions) and our different chatrooms. A HE Guide Challenge Classes
The next big unit of forums is the classes forums. This contains all the wonderful courses that HE offers. I’ll give you an overview of how the classes work and then give you links to each individual subject and the professor who currently teaches.

Classes on HE can earn you a total of 100 points per assignment and are graded by the current professor. Each professor has put up their own sticky notes and howlers that give specific information on their grading process and how each individual class words, so be sure that you read through those before completing anything. The harder the class, the more points you’ll earn for completing it. Assignments are always open, and you do not need to sign up, or even be sorted yet, in order to complete them. As soon as you have been sorted, the points will be added to your House. Anyone can do classes, except for our new Dark Arts Studies, which you need to be over seventeen to enter. All the professors are always willing to answer any questions you have, so feel free to send them a private message by clicking that owl we talked about underneath their posts. Each class also has a sub-forum for old classes, which can no longer be completed, but if you’re interested to see what other assignments there have been, you may of course look through there. Here is a list of each class, and the current professor:

Ancient Runes – Samantha Granger
Art, Drama and Creative Writing – Sashi
Arithmancy – amberg93
Astronomy – Raistlin The Wizard
Care of Magical Creatures – FaerieOfDoom
Charms – Sashi
Dark Arts Studies – Samantha Granger
Defense Against the Dark Arts – Raistlin The Wizard

Some classes also have special forums dedicated to extra studies in a certain area, with special activities that are worth more points. Below is a list of all the special forums by subject. Please also be aware that the Astronomy class has a special grading system different then all the others that ranks classes by difficulty for much larger point scales with more work.

Ancient Runes: Advanced Rune Studies
Astronomy: Space Travel Simulation Chamber
Care of Magical Creatures: The Creature Chronicles
Charms: Through a Maze
Defense Against the Dark Arts]Daring’s Chamber
Flying Lessons: Quidditch Classes

A HE Guide Challenge 34examinationwaitingroom
As you move up in years (dependent on the number of posts you have) you can sign up to begin taking exams, all of which have multiple parts to complete, can be challenges but are quite rewarding, earning you a certificate and housepoints. No exams can be taken until you are at least a second year, and others must wait until fourth year. The exams are as follows: Wand Examinations, Apparition Examination, Animagus Exam, Disillusionment Exams, OWL Exams, and soon, Occlumency, Legilimency and Patronus Exams. In the waiting room, each of these exams has a separate thread devoted to signing up, so when you reach the required year, be sure you come back to sign up. Once accepted, the Headmaster will give you permission to access the exams.

Hogwarts Experience Exams: This forum is home to many sub-forums, all which need special permissions to view. These permissions can be gained by signing up for each individual exams. The exams often have subforums as well, so be sure to read through all the howlers and post-it notes so you have a good idea of all the requirements and expectations.

A HE Guide Challenge Hogwartstowers

A HE Guide Challenge 35houseforums
Hogwarts Tower is home to your House forum, which can only be seen once you’ve been sorted. After sorting, you will gain the permissions to view your house. Each House has it’s own howlers, games, activities and scheming, so be sure to look through the forum and contact your Head of House if you have any questions.

A HE Guide Challenge 36housepoints
The Housepoints forum is one of the most important forums, filled with information regarding where your House stands in the race for the House Cup. You can find post-it notes with information regarding how many award points you receive for being the top house point winner, threads for past winners, and individual House threads that are updated to show how many points your House has in total, as well as who is earning those points and how many they’re receiving. Don’t worry if all of your points aren’t there: the threads are updated every few months, so just because a professor has graded an assignment you’ve completed, it does not necessarily mean that they have been added to the total. The Purple Elf House is a thread for our Former Head Mistress to keep track of any points she earns throughout the term, which are often dispersed throughout the Houses or to different members: in the overall scheme of things, this is not something you need to be concerned about.

A HE Guide Challenge Hogwartsgrounds

A HE Guide Challenge 37quidditch
When the Quidditch tournament is being held, this is place to cheer on your teams or even take part in the games yourself. Quidditch is played in role playing form, and points are awarded based on how well you interact with others, not on which team necessarily wins. In this forum, there are threads on how the games run and sub-forums dedicated to past games, which you can read through as examples. You do not have to be on a House team in order to participate, as there are always threads for cheering on your team in the stands.

The Event forum is where all the holiday events, for Christmas and Halloween, are placed, and hold many challenges to be completed, so pay special attention to this forum around the holidays!

The Badge Burrow
The Badge Burrow is a great place for earning House Points. Here, you complete different badges, many of which have different levels for different house points). In the main forum, there are many threads and Howlers on how the Badge Burrow works that you should look over carefully, as well as information on gold, silver, and bronze placements (for the number of badges completed in a term), and threads for questions, suggestions, and instructions on how to print screen as well as a list of all the Badges available to earn. There are several sub-forums in the Burrow:

The Badge Display Case
Upon earning a badge, each member gets a thread of their own where their badges are placed under your username. As you watch your number of badges pile up, this is the perfect place to stare at all your lovely achievements.

Badge Levels
There are five levels to badges: level one contains the easiest, while level five contains the hardest. You must begin in Level One with the Badge Member Badge before any other badges can be earned (linked below). After completing the Member Badge, you are free to work on any badge that interests you. Levels two through five often require the badge below it in order to earn it. For example, the level one Designer Badge must be completed before you may earn the Level Two Advanced Fashion Designer Badge. Each badge has its own requirements, so read the instructions carefully, and, like always, feel free to contact the staff if you have any questions or concerns.

Burrow Backyard
This subforum is for members who may need a thread to plan a event or post various links regarding the badge they are attempting to earn. This is mainly for Hand Badges, which require ideas about spirit week, or party badges that ask for detail planning. Make sure you read the rules and regulations before participating, and have fun! There is a sub-forum, called the Graphical Games Garden, where an online games tournament is held for house points.

Do you have your own website? Do you love another site as well? This is the place to promote any other websites you think other members would be interested in, or to discuss other websites. Be sure to read the rules and regulations carefully before creating a thread.

This forum is where all the old threads go. It is split into several sub-forums that reflect the main forum, so if you’re looking for old Mix and Mingle threads, go to the Mix and Mingle section of the Filing Cabinet. While you can no longer post on them, feel free to look at them for examples or just for fun.

This marks the end of your special tour of the Hogwarts Experience. I hope you had an enjoyable time and have come to know the site that much better. Remember, if you ever have any questions, the staff is always willing to help you out. Continue exploring and have fun!
