| This class is for my Bronze Hand Badge and will be graded by the current professor. Thanks! Cover Art is an important aspect of publishing books; how the books cover looks is often tied to who decides to buy it. The more interesting the cover looks, the more likely someone is to pick it up. For this class, take a book (it can be any book you want!) and write a short paragraph about the cover art. Do you think it adds to the book or could it be better? Why do you think they chose the cover art they did? Please post a picture of the cover too!
Once you’ve analyzed the cover, you get to create your own! This can be done by hand or on a computer. Be creative with what you do with the cover and be unique! Post the picture here and write another short paragraph about why you think your cover art is also good for the book and why you chose to do what you did.
Have fun and good luck!

The Selection is a dystopian novel set in the future where much of what was the US is gone and a new country has risen from the ashes. A young girl, America Singer, is picked from her poor humble caste and thrust into a competition to win the heart of the country's Prince. Because the book is a bit like the tv show Bachelor meets Brave New World, the cover fits perfectly. America's new wardrobe is indeed made up of pretty, pretty dresses and her image, which is multiplied many times, represents the 34 other girls vying for Prince Maddox's heart. The arm over her face hides her identity, which fits America and her reasons for staying in the competition. She's not interested in being the new princess because her heart already belongs to another, so she keeps to herself until she slowly builds a friendship with the Prince. In the meantime, the dress represents all the new social activities and niceties she must now put up with. It's a gorgeous, rich cover that easily goes with the plot without giving anything away.
My Cover:
I chose a group of girls, because even though the book is about America and her place in this dystopian world and her relationship between the boy she left at home and her friendship with the Prince, the main plot is The Selection. A lot of her time is spent with the other candidates, and the group of girls, while all beautiful, are all very different. I think this cover would definitely shed light on the competition, and again here America's identity is hidden because she's part of a crowd. There's a tension to the poses, which goes well with the fact that even though the girls are at the palace to snag a prince, they are in danger from frequent rebel attacks. It makes the girls seem a little edgier than the soft frilly dress in the actual cover, but I still think it would work. | |

| Linger, written by Maggie Stiefvater. I believe they chose this cover, because a lot of the book takes place in the forrest. The main character falls in love with a werewolf, and the werewolf, and his "family" live in the forest, located behind the main characters house. No intentions on giving a spoiler alert, but towards the end, the male werewolf leaves the picture, and the girl carries on in life, but still waits for him by the forest. Thus, the wolf semi hidden in the bottom left side, just watching over the girl, "Lingering" around. The Lingering wolf is the most brilliant part of the books cover. The solid colors, brings attention to anyones eyes, which makes readers want to pick the book up and skim through it. When they ready the story line after noticing the beautiful cover, they will want to buy this amazing book! Cover, by HeatherrrBrooke. I chose to use a picture of a girl holding a camera in a forest, because in the begging of Linger, the main character thrives off of taking photos of the forest from her bedroom window. And when she meets the werewolf, and learns about the secrets within the forest, through out the book she creates a hobby out of capturing lovely photos of the wolves in the forest. I believe using the attractive female will appeal to teenage girls, which would be the popular age group and sex, to read this romantic, love story. This cover will attract the attention of any teenager in general, and women of any age. My friends and I that have read the book, prefer my cover over the actual cover because we feel it speaks more for the story itself. | |

| Before I Fall is a novel set in modern day about Samantha Kingston, an average popular girl in high school, until she dies on February 12 in a car accident. When she wakes up the next day, she realizes that it's February 12th all over again and relives the same day for 7 days. Throughout the novel, it shows her struggle to understand her death and to unravel why it happened and if it can be prevented. I think that the cover is an alright cover. It shows a girl that looks like Sam, laying down outside with her eyes open. So, the eyes being open as she lays down could easily show Sam, fallen but aware of what is going on, just like in the novel. It's an easy to interrupt version of why they would have picked that cover. That being said, it's very simple and although it's bright and eye grabbing, I'm not entirely a huge fan of it because I think that it could have been done better. For the remake of the cover I decided to go in a slightly different direction. I picked an actress I believe to resemble Sam (at least in my own mind), standing tall and facing forward with just a bit of sass. The girl and the way she holds herself, fitting the attitude that Sam has in the book, she's pretty and popular and she isn't someone who will go down without a fight. In the background, I chose a forest because although it isn't the main setting of the book, the forest ends up playing a huge role in the story and ultimately in the ending of the novel. The faded clock, which doesn't seem to be all there, or all right, representing how time works within the novel, frozen on the same day and not working properly. Overall, I think my cover gives more to hint at (even if I was terrible at placing the text on it) and ties more into the important details in the book. Of course, Sam still had to be present and a focus because the book is from her point of view and is about her. | |
