Madeleine sighed in relief as the train finally pulled up to the station. She wasn’t old enough yet for her apparition license, but was praying for the day that finally came through. Excitedly looing out the through the frosty paned window, she could see the dark shape of an impressive looking castle rising above a quaint little village. That must be Hogwarts, she thought to herself.

Madeleine hurried to throw on her coat, a scarf, and a hat bearing the logo of Beaxbatons before hurrying out of the train compartment and onto the platform. With a spring in her step, she scurried down the platform stairs, slipping a bit on the last one, but grabbing the handrail just in time to save herself from a fall. She frowned down at the step. You’d think they could use magic to clear this off.

She stepped out into the snowy street, taking in the quaint little village. It looked very picturesque with the little roofs of the houses covered in snow, the chimneys letting up little poofs of smoke from the fires inside that were giving a warm glow to the entire village. Wreaths and fairy lights were hung on the houses, giving off a festive season to the air.

It was smaller than she had expected, but this was good news for trying to find her pen pal, Sarah. They were both part of a program run by the schools which allowed for international students to write to one another and learn about other countries’ cultures and ways of life. They’d been writing for over three years, but this was the first time they were going to meet in person. Madeleine couldn’t be more excited.

Checking a delicate watch on her wrist, Madeleine saw the train had arrived a little early. Unsure of whether Sarah would be coming from the castle itself or traveling from home, as it was the Christmas break, Madeleine thought it might be best to go check in to the Three Broomsticks, which is where she would be staying for the night.

She walked down the street from the train station, looking around at what appeared to be mostly houses. As she continued on, they gradually began to change into shops instead. Madeleine looked in contempt at a run down, dirty looking pub that had “The Hog’s Head” written above it. She sniffed disdainfully and continued on her way. You certainly wouldn’t see anything like that near Beaxbatons.

It wasn’t long, however before she heard the sounds of a more raucous pub, a large wooden structure with three broomsticks above the doorframe. This must be it, Natalie thought, pushing the door open.


With a sigh of relief, she saw a warm, welcoming, crowded inn, that at first glance appeared to be clean, though admittedly a bit smoky. A mirror behind the bar reflected the cozy atmosphere, and she could see drinks from Butterbeer, to Firewhisky, to mulled mead behind the bar. Madeleine approached the bar, to see about getting access to her room.

Sarah felt nervous and excited as she got ready to leave. She was planning on getting to The Three Broomsticks early just in case Madeleine’s train arrived ahead of schedule. They had been writing for years now, and Sarah could not be more ready to finally meet one of her closest friends in person.

Pulling on her socks and shoes and grabbing her coat and hat, Sarah called goodbye to her parents and went out into the street. She lived in one of the little houses just outside of the main square. A light snow was falling around her as she walked down the street, leaving a trail of footprints behind her.

She smiled at the familiar sights around her and breathed in the rich winter smell of fires and pine. The sound of carols coming from the radios of the homes around her and the Christmas lights glittery joined her on her walk to the pub. This was her favorite time of the year in Hosgmeade, which had been why she had suggested Madeleine come visit at this time. She was hoping she could visit Madeleine in France over the summer.

Sarah made mental notes of all the places she wanted to take Madeleine as she walked through the town square. Definitely Honeydukes, as she knew Madeleine had a sweet tooth, and she imagined she would also get a good kick out of Zonko’s Joke Shop. The Shrieking Shack was a also on the line-up, given Madeleine loved a good spooky tale.

Before she knew it, she was at the Three Broomsticks and pushing the familiar wooden door open to reveal the warm, cozy interior. Scanning the room, Sarah wove through the crowded tables until she found an empty one. Taking a seat, Sarah removed her gloves and hat.

Checking her watch, Sarah grew even more excited when she realized Madeleine’s train should be arriving any minute. Sarah went up to the bar and got two Butterbeers, and brought them back to the table. Keeping an eye on the door, Sarah sipped her drink nervously.

A few minutes later, she saw a short, beautiful blonde girl open the door, peering around wide-eyed. She had a huge coat on, and a blue hat with the Beauxbaton logo on it, and was making her way to the bar.


“Madeleine,” Sarah called. “Madeleine, over here!”
