David Tennant

David Tennant has recently sprung to fame as the Tenth Doctor in the successful Muggle TV series, Doctor Who. Before this, he was a well-known stage actor. His spring to the television and movie scenes has made many magazines rate him highly in their ‘Sexiest Men’ columns.
David Tennant was born, David McDonald on the 18th April 1971. At the age of 3, he told his parents he wished to become an actor, ironically because of his love for Doctor Who. David grew up in his home country of Scotland in the town of Renfrewshire. His father was the local minister and later rose to become the Moderator of the General Assembly of the Church of Scotland (like the Archbishop of Canterbury in the Church of England).
David Tennant’s desire to be an actor was a main part of his childhood. At the age of 17, David won a place at the Royal Scottish Academy of Music and Drama. He soon adopted the name Tennant, from a hero of his Neil Tennant, the lead singer of the Pet Shop Boys, as there was another David McDonald already in the actors' association Equity and he did not want to cause confusion.
His first work after graduating was generally slammed by critics, one claiming he had no ‘charm or ability whatsoever’. He auditioned and was turned down for Taggart 16 times. However, there was a light at the end of the tunnel. Tennant managed to land a role in the Scottish TV series, ‘Takin’ Over The Asylum’.
This success allowed him to move to London, where he lodged with the comic, Arabella Weir, who he became friends with and became godfather to one of her children. In London, he began to perform frequently performing with the Royal Shakespeare Company with such comedic parts as Touchstone in As You Like It. In 2003, he was rewarded with a nomination for the Laurence Olivier Theatre Award.
At the same time he slowly began to make his way on to TV screens, beginning at the bottom, with small parts in The Bill and The Mrs. Bradley Mysteries. These parts became bigger and bigger, until in 1996 he played a drunken undergraduate against Christopher Eccleston’s Jude, who would precede him as the Ninth Doctor.
After this, he performed in many more BBC programmes such as Blackpool in 2004 and Casanova in 2005. He broke onto the silver screen as Barty Crouch Jr. in Harry Potter and the Goblet of Fire.
At the end of 2005, David was given the chance to fulfill his childhood dream and become the Tenth Doctor. Needless to say he was overjoyed. During the filming he met his current girlfriend, Sophia Myles, who appeared as Madame de Pompadour in the episode, The Girl in the Fireplace and they have been dating since.
The future holds much for this young Muggle actor. He shows no desire to leave Doctor Who anytime soon and the offers for other roles are still flooding in.
