Part 1: Creatures

1. Write a short account upon a subject, muggle or wizard, who has the lycanthrope disease. Remember to include facts!
In the Greek Myths, Lycaon was the son of Pelasgus and Meliboea and fathered the first kind of Arcadia. As a whole he had 50 sons. He one day put a plate of human flesh before Zeus and Zues didn't like that. It was rumored he killed his own son Nyctimus and tried to serve him to Zeus. But Zues became angry and after Lycaon sacrificed a child in front of Zeus he was then turned into a wolf creature. The characteristics he portrayed were savageness, blood-thirsty for human flesh and cursed to return to human when the moon was gone from the night's sky. It soon became known that there was a 'wolf creature' created from a human every time one would sacrifice humans to Zeus.

2. Document in short a boggart occurrence in the muggle world, one that has already been reported. The belief in mosters. Muggle kids have a fear of monsters in closets and under the bed and in dark places. It's known throughout history that this fear hits almost all of them at one age or another.
3. Choose one wizard familiar, ie cat, rat etc, and discuss the importance of the species. Cover aspects of protection, aid and anything else you wish to include.

The cat is one of the most independant creatures known to wizards to be reliable and useful. With their sharp sense of sight, and smell then are able to find what they seek. They are gentle but can be aggressive. They have sharp teeth and claws and are often snippy if you upset them. They're quite protective though they usually favor themselves. However they tread quietly on soft padded paws and run less rish of being caught or discovered.

Part 2: Symbols

1. Write a short account upon a peace symbol and discuss why that particular symbol could have been chosen for that particular society. The dove is a symbol of peace. Releasing a white dove into the air is a sign of peace, and harmony. It is because it is atranquil creature who doesn't conflict or try to harm anyone. It is a noted symbol of grace and good will in the christian religion.

2. Discuss the relevance of the skull and snake in the symbol of the dark mark.

The Dark Mark is used to summon the Death Eaters. It starts with a skull representing death and a snake portrude from it's mouth. Snakes are poisonous and wicked and many are able to kill quickly.

Part 3: Humans and their Environment

1. Compare Lord Voldemort to another fictional character. What are the similarities? Discuss why you think that these similarities are important.

Lord Voldemort and Narnia's Ice Queen.

They have the following simularities. A lust for power, greed and will be very sneaky about getting things their way. They also both lack patience and want everything done right then and there and do not think out the outcomes or how something could go wrong. They are cocky and will kill whoever gets in their way. They both are powerful but take their powers for granted. They could both be quite stronger if they'd actually be more strategic and have a back up plan for when they are to face their foes.

2. Briefly document how you could determine a dark wizard from a wizard on the good side. Dark wizards are often sneaky, shady characters who keep company with other dark ones. Most can be found around Knockturn alley and in dark, desolate places. A lot of them might be dressed in dark clothing but that doesn't always mean anything. Many have cold dispositions, or get uncomfortable or irritable if someone starts snooping around in their business. They often have cold eyes, vacant expression and scowl a lot.

3. Cover at least three aspects within the environment and discuss in detail how these could aid you in the final battle, both in magical means as well as muggle means. On the grounds of Hogwarts:

Outside, it's best to use some of the most powerful spells you can and try to accio tree limbs or even some debris or whatever you can get your hands on. Outside, you have no limits on magic and so hit them with everything you've got. Avoid using spells that are easily reflected and try to form a team with your allies- everyone work together as a unit.Earth and Air spells and charms would be most useful outdoors.

Inside Hogwarts: Use the accioing charm along with just pushing things over on your enemies or knock them down. Throw whatever you can, use the secret passageways. Lead them through places you know they will have difficulty in. Spells dealing with fire and water are good in this case. Make sure to use all the magical properties that the castle has to offer and don't hold back.

Diagon Alley: Make your way through the shops but avoid the ones where you could have things used against you. Practice your strong spells here but try to prevent from anyone-allies and bystanders- getting in your firing range. Perhaps good punches and kicks are best here as you don't want to accidentally blast anyone. So push things over, throw things and punch and kick with all of your might.

Part 1: Creatures

1. Write a short account upon a subject, muggle or wizard, who has the lycanthrope disease. Remember to include facts! There have been many accounts in the world of strange half human creatures. One was at the Hahn Airforce base in Germany in 1988 several military police respond to an alarm from a fence sensor. When they arrived, they reported seeing a large "dog-like" animal stand up on its rear legs, look at them, and leap over a 7.5 foot tall fence.

2. Document in short a boggart occurance in the muggle world, one that has already been reported. The boogie man which I think would pretty much sum up the way a boggart is. The boogie man takes on the form of the child's worst fears. Whether it be a scary movie villian, a scary animal or what ever. The boogie man is a fearful creature that only exists because of fear.

3. Choose one wizard familiar, ie cat, rat etc, and discuss the importance of the species. Cover aspects of protection, aid and anything else you wish to include.
Dogs have been called man's best friend, but they too can be a familiar. The Goddess Artemis was always sided by a hound on her hunts. A dog is usually kind hearted and noble, although some can become menacing. Dogs have been known to rescue perfect strangers from death. They are smart and loyal. Dogs have also been known to wake their families before natural disasters, such as, fire, earthquake, tornado. Because of their sixth sense they are a prominent canidate for being a familiar. Not to mention their ability to guard us and our property from danger.

Part 2: Symbols
1. Write a short account upon a peace symbol and discuss why that particular symbol could have been chosen for that particular society.
The Peace Symbol or Nero's Cross A broken, upside-down cross. To Roman emperor Nero, who hated and persecuted the early Christians, it meant destruction of Christianity. Revived in the sixties by hippies and others who protested nuclear weapons, Western culture, and Christian values, it now symbolizes a utopian hope for a new age of global peace and earth-centered unity. But many of heavy metal rock fans would agree with Nero and use it to mock Christ and His followers.

2. Discuss the relevance of the skull and snake in the symbol of the dark mark.
The Dark mark was used to bring the followers of He-who-must-not-be-named together, to show when death eaters had killed someone and to put fear in the hearts of wizards, witches and muggles alike.

Part 3: Humans and Their Environments
1. Compare Lord Voldemort to another fictional character. What are the similarities? Discuss why you think that these similarities are important.

Lord Voldemort and Emperor Palpitine.

Each wants to bring a downfall to what is good in their respective worlds. They want to rule with a iron hand over all they survey. They enjoy bringing fear and hatred to the world. Power is their only friend.

2. Briefly document how you could determine a dark wizard from a wizard on the good side.
Dark Wizards are usually not a nice lot. They tend to hate what is beautiful or gentle in the world. Good Wizards are usually interested in helping others. Giving back to their environment and caring for animals and people. Dark Wizards are only interested in what they can prophet from their Environment.

3. Cover at least three aspects within the environment and discuss in detail how these could aid you in the final battle, both in magical means as well as muggle means. On the grounds of Hogwarts:
On the grounds of Hogwarts you can use many things from the environment. Poisonous plants, mandrake for healing, plants and trees to levitate and drop on your foe. Boober Tubers, Hinky punks, cornish pixies, etc.

END OF YEAR TEST!!!!!!!! Empty
PostSubject: Re: END OF YEAR TEST!!!!!!!!   END OF YEAR TEST!!!!!!!! EmptyFri Aug 18 2006, 12:30

CLOSES 18TH AUGUST 2006
This end of year test will cover only the classes in which have been completed this first HE year. The total possible housepoints is 60 and these will be marked slightly harder than normal, so be detailed and bring in those extra last minute housepoints for your house!

Part 1: Creatures

1. Write a short account upon a subject, muggle or wizard, who has the lycanthrope disease. Remember to include facts!

Lyncanthropy, according to some folk lore, is an ability that a person has to transform from a man into a wolf. In other words, lyncanthropy is similar to a person having the ability to transform-although unwillingly-into a werewolf. And one such werewolf is Remus Lupin. He was bitten at a very young age by Fenrir Grayback, and, as there is no cure for lycanthropy, he was forced to endure the very painful transformations. When the time came for him to attend school, his parents were, reasonably, hesitant to let him go. But, Albus Dumbledore, the former headmaster of Hogwarts, allowed him to attend as long as certain measures were taken. So, a passageway was built from the school into Hogsmeade, to a newly constructed building known as the “Shrieking Shack”. Locals thought that the screams coming from the edifice were that of violent spirits, but they really were coming from young Lupin. When a werewolf transforms, he (or she) becomes blood thirsty and wants to attack humans. Since he was isolated from other humans, in frustration he would bite and scratch himself. To this day, the Shrieking Shack is known as the most haunted building in Britain, and the rumors about it run wild-with some encouragement from Dumbledore himself, so as to distract them from the truth that there was a werewolf in their midst. Nowadays, Lupin drinks a wolfsbane potion that allows him to become a tamer werewolf when he transforms, but he still must isolate himself from humans during times of the full moon.

2. Document in short a boggart occurrence in the muggle world, one that has already been reported.
In Manchester, England, there is a park called “Boggart Hole Clough”. It has earned its name because it is believed that a mischievous boggart dwells there. There have been a few sudden and apparent disappearances that have occurred around this area during the early 19th century in particular. These strange happenings have been attributed to the “Boggart of Hole Clough”.

3. Choose one wizard familiar, ie cat, rat etc, and discuss the importance of the species. Cover aspects of protection, aid and anything else you wish to include.

A very popular animal familiar is the wise owl. One of the common uses owls have in our world is that they deliver our letters. These letters can be very important-discussing business such as the Order, or sending for help-or trivial gossip. But, a mail service is not all they are good for. Owls have sharp talons, which can be used to attack a foe, if trained to do so. And they are very stealthy creatures, the design of their feathers allow for virtually soundless flight, which is very good for a sneak attack. Their beaks are also quite painful, and can be used to poke out the eyes of an enemy (am I getting too graphic?). Their necks are long and extremely flexible neck, which allows it to see in 270° around them, so they can tell when someone-or something, as sometimes is the case in the wizarding world- coming towards them. Since they are all nocturnal animals, they need to rely on their hearing in order to hunt. Because of this, they have exceptional hearing and could hear noises from far distances away, which could help alert to an intruder approaching. Their hearing is so exceptional, they can also pinpoint where any sound is coming from.

Basically, the owl is an excellent animal familiar because, with the right training, you could be able to teach it many things that would be helpful to you.

Part 2: Symbols

1. Write a short account upon a peace symbol and discuss why that particular symbol could have been chosen for that particular society.

The olive branch is a symbol of peace due to its place in the Bible. When Noah sends out a dove (another symbol for peace) it returns with an olive branch, signifying that land has been found after the flood. Today, the olive branch is used when describing the end of war, and, in a way, God was ending the war he had with the “evil of mankind”.

2. Discuss the relevance of the skull and snake in the symbol of the dark mark.

A skull is typically used to symbolize death. The snake is showing Voldemort’s heritage, as he is the last descendent of Salazar Slytherin. The Dark Mark resembles the basilisk coming out of Salazar Slytherin’s mouth in the Chamber of Secrets. Also, the incantation “Morsmordre” can be translated to “Death bite”-or “Death Eater”, as the followers of Voldemort are called. So, maybe the death symbol (skull) is combining with the snake, and some species of snakes can swallow things much larger than them whole. (I know this is all somewhat rambling, but if you think about it, it does make sence-somewhat)

Part 3: Humans and their Environment

1. Compare Lord Voldemort to another fictional character. What are the similarities? Discuss why you think that these similarities are important.

Voldemort has many similarities with Sauron in Lord of the Rings. In both cases, calling either of them by their real name was thought to bring bad luck. Voldemort is called “The Dark Lord” and “He Who Must Not Be Named” and Sauron was called “The Enemy” or “The Nameless Enemy.” They are both very powerful, and went to any means to gain their power. They also have little remorse, and are very evil. Voldemort kills so that he could live longer, he has even killed his parents. They both are desire as much power as possible, and believe it’s “their way or the highway”. They cannot be changed from the way they are, the only way to stop them is to destroy them completely. After their original “defeat” Voldemort and Sauron both lost their bodies and regained them to some extent. When they regained them they both continued their world domination plant as though they had never been defeated in the first place.

2. Briefly document how you could determine a dark wizard from a wizard on the good side.

Well, there is always the method of checking on their forearms for the Dark Mark. But, if they somehow have this concealed, then you could give them Veritaserum and have them tell you that way. Or, if you are a powerful wizard skilled in Legilimency, you could enter their mind and go through their memories and see if you can learn anything that way.

3. Cover at least three aspects within the environment and discuss in detail how these could aid you in the final battle, both in magical means as well as muggle means.

Hogsmeade: In Hogsmeade there are many shops and alleyways, which would be ideal for hiding in wait to ambush the enemy, or to conceal oneself while running from them. There is also a convenient passageway from Hogwarts to Hogsmeade, so if one needed to get from one places to the other, use of this passageway could come in quite handy. Since it is the only entire wizarding village in Britain, there is no need to worry about muggles getting involved in a fight there, so they will be relatively safe (as long as the fight is contained to Hogsmeade). Anyone who’s there is at least 13 years of age and capable of doing magic. This could end up going the wrong way for the “good” side, but as long as enough wizards that are of age are there, some serious magic can be done. I mentioned before a passageway from Hogwarts to Hogsmeade (in that case, Honeydukes sweet shop), but there is another from Hogwarts via the Whomping Willow to the Shrieking Shack. That could be used as a sort of headquarters, because very few people go there due to the rumors of it being haunted by violent spirits. Hogsmeade is also close to the Hogwarts Express, which might be able to be used as some sort of transport device for people. Inside the Hog’s Head, it is very easy to hide in plain sight due to the strange crowd that it attracts, so if you want to meet someone there and show up with a veil on your head, you won’t attract too much attention. Also, it is possible that there are secret passages to and from the Hog’s Head, if someone were to locate them they could become extremely useful.

The Burrow: The Burrow is a highly magical building, and therefore would be a good place for a HeadQuarters. Perhaps the ghoul in the attic would also be helpful in some way? It is also in plain site and odd things must’ve been happening there for a while, so the muggles wouldn’t notice. The gnomes in the garden could also be used as some sort of weapons and be thrown at the enemy.

St. Mungo’s: St. Mungo’s would be useful because it is, of course, a hospital. Wounded wizards-and, upon occasion, muggles-could be taken there. Since it is hidden from the muggle world there is no fear of being discovered. However, it would need to be heavily protected. St. Mungo’s has many floors and since all of the Healers there are skilled in magic it would be good to have most of them on your side.
