| Part One. 1. From Greek Mythology, who is Cassandra? (1) Cassandra was the daughter of the King and Queen of Troy. Apollo, who had fallen in love with her, granted her the power of prophecy, or seeing into the future. 2. What was the deal which she made and broke with the god Apollo? (1) Cassandra had agreed to be his lover, but then changed her mind and broke her promise. 3. How did Apollo take his revenge and the consquences on the people of Troy? (2) Angry, Apollo put a curse on Cassandra so that no one would believe her predictions about the future. When Cassandra prophecised the Greeks' seige of Troy, because of that curse, no one believed her. 4. What was Cassandra's most famous prediction about the greek siege? (2) She had warned everybody about the Trojan Horse, as we now know was a main factor in the fall of Troy. She had also warned of the death of a Greek commander and her own death. 5. Who swore to avenge the wrong done to Cassandra and why? (2) Athena, though on the side of the Greeks, was outraged when Cassandra was attacked in the sanctuary of her temple. Therefore, she sent storms to the attacker's ships, sinking them. The man escaped and swam to a rock, but Poseidon split the rock in two, letting the man perish in the water below. Part Two. 1. What is a Psychic? (1) A psychic is a person that claims to have extra-sensory abilities. 2. What does ESP stand for? (1) ESP stands for "extra-sensory perception" 3. Name all seven types of Psychic sensing and what they are. (7) 1. Clairvoyance- where the person can see distant persons, objects, or events 2. Clairaudience- where the person can hear thoughts from the living, dead, or spirit world 3. Clairsentience- where the person can sense information 4. Precognition- where the person can see events that have yet to take place 5. Retrocognition- where the person can know something about a past event through psychic means 6. Telepathy- where the people can communicate with the mind, without using speech or their bodies 7. Aura Reading- where the person can see the energy field radiating off of another, and therefore can interpret the other's mood or personality 4. Who is Nostradamus and why do so many believe his words? (1) Nostradamus was a 16th century psychic. Able to see future events and visions, he was known as the "Prophet of Doom" because many of his visions included death or war. People believed him, because many of his predictions have come true. He predicted the French Revolution, the rise to power of Hitler, the assassination of John F. Kennedy, the Great Fire of London, the destruction of the spaceship, Challenger, and he predicted the events of September 11. 5. In your own opinion did Nostradamus predict the tragic events of September 11th? (2) "In the year 1999 and seven months The Great King of Terror will come from the sky, He will bring back to life the great king of the Mongols. Before and after the God of war reigns happily." -an interpretation of Nostradamus's prediction I believe that Nostradamus predicted the events of 9/11. The first line gives us a date- some time in September 1999 (only two years off), as September was the seventh month in the 16th century. The second line tells us that terror will come from the sky, as the planes did when they crashed into the World Trade Center. The last line says that war will reign afterwards, and now there are many wars going on around the world and especially in the Middle East. Part Three. 1. What is a medium? (1) A medium is a person who claims to recieve messages from spirits in the afterlife. 2. Who is Derek Acorah and why has he come under harsh critism? (3) Derek Acorah is a popular British television personality, who claims he is a spiritual medium, or can talk to spirits. He has come under critisism because he has been caught "channeling" fictional characters. Some of the spirits he has "channeled" were Kreed Kafer and Rik Eedles, which are anagrams for "Derek Faker" and "Derek Lies", respectively. 3. What is automatic drawing? (1) Automatic drawing is a means of expressing the subconscious. Holding a pencil or an Etch-a-Sketch, the hand moves freely and randomly across the page or knobs. Since drawing like this is almost completely free of rational control, the picture may be an insight to your own psyche or subconscious. 4. What is Cold Reading? (1) Cold reading is a technique used to convince another person that you know more about them then you actually do. 5. What did John Edward do in 2001 to spark a national outcry from the American public? (2) In 2001, John Edwards started filming a special episode, in which he met with the families of those killed in the World Trade Center attacks in order to channel their spirits. The outcry from the public was so great, the producers canceled that episode. Part Four. Max of 20 points) Chose one from any of the following: ~ Cassandra and the Greek Gods ~ ~ Derek Acorah ~ ~ John Edward ~ Now write an essay (no less then 60 words) on the effect the peron you have chosen has had on todays world and how we view them. Also take into account how TV Shows, Books and their Authors, Films, Plays and Poetry have used them to either mock or idolise them. John Edward is a popular television icon today. His show, Crossing Over, has many fans, as well as many skeptics. Many people believe he is a fraud, that he either met the families on his show beforehand or uses different ways other than psychic powers to "channel" the spirits. MadTV on Comedy Central has had a skit mocking John Edward by having an impersonator make extremely obvious comments about the audience, and the audience being in awe of his "powers." Jon Stewart of the Daily Show, also on Comedy Central, has called John "a crazy TV psychic guy". Other shows such as Family Guy, Royal Canadian Air Farce, and South Park have each made fun of Edward, each saying he is crazy or a fraud. Comedian David Cross has also mocked him and others like him in one of his acts. So is John Edward a medium, someone who can channel spirits to help comfort those who have lost a loved one? Or is he a fraud, as much of the media thinks, making up these powers to make money by having a television show? That's for you to decide. :D For anyone who completes the whole homework with full correct answers will receive a further 2 points taking their House Points to the Maxium of 50. | Enjoy the homework Etta darling - I tried to make sure it wasn't too long for you!
Welcome back mes petit pois! I do hope that this new term brings a lot of empty heads for us to fill up. Homework for today (and every other day until i close it) is as follows:
Part One.
1. From Greek Mythology, who is Cassandra? (1)
In Greek mythology, Cassandra ("she who entangles men") (also known as Alexandra) was a daughter of King Priam of Troy and his queen Hecuba, who captured the eye of Apollo and was granted the gift of prophecy. However, when she did not return his love, Apollo placed a curse on her so that no one would ever believe her predictions.
2. What was the deal which she made and broke with the god Apollo? (1)
He would teach/give her the art of prophecy if she were to return his love for her. She denied him though.
3. How did Apollo take his revenge and the consequences on the people of Troy? (2)
He would place a curse on her that would lead to no one believing her predictions. Also anyone that would be betrothed to her would die - this happen to three different men. When Cassandra foresees the destruction of Troy (she warns the Trojans about the Trojan Horse, the death of Agamemnon, and her own demise), she is unable to do anything to forestall these events. Her family believes she is mad, and, according to some versions, kept her locked up because of this. From her appearances in various plays, it seems that the incarceration drove her truly mad, at least by the time of Troy's destruction.
4. What was Cassandra's most famous prediction about the greek siege? (2)
She warns the Trojans about the Trojan Horse, the death of Agamemnon, and her own demise.
5. Who swore to anvenge the wrong done to Cassandra and why? (2)
On account of Cassandra's rape this outrage the Achaean kings assembled, and Odysseus advised to stone Ajax the Lesser to death for his crime. However, no punishment was decided by the assembled Achaean leaders, and accordingly the gods made them pay their omission and their having despoiled the shrines by sending storms and contrary winds. And much more in addition, as the offended goddess declared:
"I will impose on them a return that is no return." [Athena]
In one of these storms, Athena threw a thunderbolt against Ajax the Lesser's ship; and when the ship went to pieces he made his way safe to a rock, but then Poseidon smote the rock with his trident and split it, and Ajax the Lesserfell into the sea and perished.
Part Two.
1. What is a Psychic? (1)
A psychic is a person who claims or who is believed to possess extra-sensory abilities, including: clairvoyance, psychometry and precognition.
2. What does ESP stand for? (1)
Extra-sensory perception
3. Name all seven types of Psychic sensing and what they are. (7)
Clairvoyance - is defined as a form of extra-sensory perception whereby a person perceives distant objects, persons, or events, including perceiving an image hidden behind opaque objects and the detection of types of energy not normally perceptible to humans
Clairaudience is the ability to hear things not audible within normal hearing ranges. This is an example of extra-sensory perception (ESP). Clairgustance is defined as a form of extra-sensory perception that allegedly allows one to taste a substance without putting anything in one's mouth. Clairsentience is the umbrella term for the psi (or psychic) sense of touch. A clairsentient person is able to perceive energy fields (through physical sensations), including a person's aura and vibrations (such as voice and how words are strung together). This may also explain the ability to "sense" the presence of non-corporeal entities, such as ghosts. Precognition is a form of extra-sensory perception. Believers in precognition say it allows a "percipient" to perceive information about future places or events before they happen (as opposed to merely predicting them based on deductive reasoning and current knowledge). Retrocognition, also called postcognition, is the supposed ability to know something about a situation after its occurrence through psychic means. Retrocongition often involves ability to know the past (sometimes including distant past) of oneself and others, without direct observation of events. Psychometry and past life regression can both be considered kinds of retrocognition.
Second sight, a term denoting the opposite of its apparent significance, meaning in reality the seeing, in vision, of events before they occur. Foresight expresses the meaning of second sight, which perhaps was originally so called because normal vision was regarded as coming first, while supernormal vision is a secondary thing, confined to certain individuals.
Telepathy ("feeling") is the claimed ability of humans and other creatures to communicate information from one mind to another, without the use of extra tools such as speech or body language. Aura Reading - reading field emanating from the surface of a person or object. This emanation is visualized as an outline of cascading color and may be held to represent soul vibrations, chakric emergence, or a reflection of surrounding energy fields.
4. Who is Nostradamus and why do so many believe his words. (1)
Nostradamus (December 14, 1503 – July 2, 1566), Latinized name of Michel de Nostredame, was one of the world's most famous publishers of prophecies. He is best known for his book Les Propheties, the first edition of which appeared in 1555.
5. In your own opinion did Nostradamus predict teh tragic events of September 11th? (2)
"In the City of God there will be a great thunder, Two brothers torn apart by Chaos, while the fortress endures, the great leader will succumb", The third big war will begin when the big city is burning"
- Nostradamus 1654 "City of God"
Assuming "the City of God" is New York City, then the "two brothers torn apart by Chaos" must be the fallen towers of the Word Trade Center. The "fortress" is obviously the Pentagon, the "great leader" succumbing is the United States of America and "the third big war" can only mean World War III.
Now to anyone that would seem plausible - but is it? Why would New York be considered the city of god to begin with? You would really have to stretch this passage for it to even be believable. Further if you look at the date very closely - it's 1654. Nostradamus died in 1566. So how did he come to be connected with this in the first place we have to wonder?
Part Three.
1. What is a medium? (1)
In spirituality, a medium or spirit medium (plural mediums) is an individual who claims to have the ability to receive messages from spirits (discorporate entities), or claims that he or she can channel such entities — that is, write or speak in the voice of these entities rather than in the medium's own voice.
2. Who is Derek Acorah and why has he come under harsh critism? (3)
Derek Acorah is the stage name of Derek Johnson. He is a popular but controversial British cable and satellite television personality, who has come to fame as a purported "psychic medium" (a person who claims to be able to talk to the dead).
He has also come under harsh criticism when he was caught on numerous occasions claming to be in contact with the spirits of fictional characters, and in one case became possessed by one of the fictional characters. One was "Kreed Kafer" that is an anagram of Derek Faker, another was "Rik Eedles" also an anagram for Derek Lies. These names where said to be mouthed in ear shot of Mr Acorah by parapsychologist Ciarán O' Keeffe, just before the cameras rolled for the Living TV show Most Haunted, to trick Derek into taking the bait, and to prove he was in fact a fraudster.
3. What is automatic drawing? (1)
Automatic drawing was developed by the surrealists, as a means of expressing the subconscious. In automatic drawing, the hand is allowed to move 'randomly' across the paper or Etch-A-Sketch. In applying chance and accident to mark-making, drawing is to a large extent freed of rational control. Hence the drawing produced may be attributed in part to the subconscious and may reveal something of the psyche, which would otherwise be repressed.
4. What is Cold Reading? (1)
Cold reading is a technique used by salespeople, interrogators, hypnotists, psychics, graphologists, palmists, astrologers, con men and others to convince another person that they know more about them than they actually do.
5. What did John Edward do in 2001 to spark a national outcry from the American public? (2)
Shortly after the World Trade Center Attacks in 2001, John Edward began filming a special in which he met with some relatives of the victims of the terrorist attacks on the World Trade Center and the Pentagon and would have tried to communicate with those who were killed; however, news of the show's filming spread quickly, sparking a national outcry. The production office of "Crossing Over with John Edward" and the offices of the SCI-FI Channel, which aired "Crossing Over" until 2004, were flooded with angry phone calls. After terminating the program, the producers issued a statement claiming, “We did not expect to get such negative comments about this particular program.”
Part Four.
(Max of 20 points)
Choose one from any of the following:
~ Cassandra and the Greek Gods ~
Now right an essay (no less then 60 words) on the effect the peron you have chosen has had on todays world and how we view them. Also take into account how TV Shows, Books and their Authors, Films, Plays and Poetry have used them to either mock or idolize them.
The word Cassandra has become widely used. In modern usage, however, a "Cassandra" tends to describe someone who makes true predictions which are disbelieved.
The Cassandra Syndrome is used to describe someone who believes that he or she can see the future but cannot do anything about it. A fictional character Dr. Kathryn Railly explores this syndrome and those who suffer from it in Twelve Monkeys - a 1995 science fiction film written by David and Janet Peoples and directed by Terry Gilliam. The movie deals with time travel and memory and is inspired by the French short film La Jetée. The film stars Bruce Willis, Madeleine Stowe, and Brad Pitt.
Cassandra is also known as Alexandra. In the video games Soul Calibur II and Soul Calibur III, there is a character named Cassandra Alexandra, the sister of Sophitia Alexandra. In Soul Edge, however, Cassandra's name was mistranslated as Kathandra.
In more modern literature, Cassandra has often served as a model for tragedy and Romance, and has given rise to the archetypical character of someone whose prophetic insight is obscured by insanity, turning their revelations into riddles or disjointed statements that are not fully comprehended until after the fact. Notable examples are the character of River Tam from the science fiction TV series Firefly and the science fiction short story "Cassandra" by C. J. Cherryh.
The story of Cassandra was also used in a song by Norwegian goth band Theatre of Tragedy, entitled "Cassandra" on the concept album Aégis, and also in multiple songs by epic metal band Blind Guardian.
Folk and popular music group ABBA also used the story of Cassandra in one of their last recorded songs entitled "Cassandra".
Down in the street they're all singing and shouting Staying alive though the city is dead Hiding their shame behind hollow laughter While you are crying alone in your bed
Pity Cassandra that no one believed you But then again you were lost from the start Now we must suffer and sell our secrets Bargain, playing smart, aching in our hearts
Sorry Cassandra I misunderstood Now the last day is dawning Some of us wanted but none of us could Listen to words of warning But on the darkest of nights Nobody knew how to fight And we were caught in our sleep Sorry Cassandra I didn't believe You really had the power I only saw it as dreams you would weave Until the final hour
So in the morning your ship will be sailing Now that your father and sister are gone There is no reason for you to linger You're grieving deeply but still moving on You know the future is casting a shadow No one else sees it but you know your fate Packing your bags, being slow and thorough Knowing, though you're late, that ship is sure to wait
I watched the ship leaving harbor at sunrise Sails almost slack in the cool morning rain She stood on deck, just a tiny figure Rigid and restrained, blue eyes filled with pain Sorry Cassandra I misunderstood Now the last day is dawning Some of us wanted but none of us could Listen to words of warning But on the darkest of nights Nobody knew how to fight And we were caught in our sleep Sorry Cassandra I didn't believe You really had the power I only saw it as dreams you would weave Until the final hour
I'm sorry Cassandra I'm sorry Cassandra From what we know of the tale of Cassandra in Greek mythology this is a depiction of what occurred in troy. No one in Troy believed her predictions and therefore it led to the destruction and fall of Troy.

Precognition is when information about the future is known. Yet it has to do rather with feelings rather then concrete information. Telepathy is when a person is about to communicate to another person through their minds instead of word of mouth. John Edward is a “psychic medium” that lives in the United States. He has a television show on the Discovery Channel called ‘Crossing Over with John Edward’. He contacts various audience’s dead family members. He created a large controversy when he tried to go to victim’s families after the September 11th attacks to contact the victims. He has both been praised and criticized in the world today. A psychiatrist by the name of Gary Schwartz has tested Edward’s powers and claim that he is real. | <b>Part One.</b> <b>1. From Greek Mythology, who is Cassandra? (1)</b> Cassandra was the daughter of King Priam and Hecuba of Troy. Unfortunately, the princess caught the eye of Apollo, god of the sun. He gave her the gift of seeing into the future, but when she told him she did not love him, he made it so no one would believe anything she said, though the prophesies she uttered were true. <b>2. What was the deal which she made and broke with the god Apollo? (1)</b> In one myth, Cassandra promised Apollo that she would be his consort, but she broke the promise. <b>3. How did Apollo take his revenge and the consequences on the people of Troy? (2)</b> Apollo made it that no one believed Cassandra when she saw the devastation that the men in the Horse would do. She was thought mad, and some myths say that she was kept away from others. <b>4. What was Cassandra's most famous prediction about the Greek siege? (2)</b> I believe that the most famous prediction Cassandra made was that the Greeks were inside the giant Horse. Unfortunately, she was not believed. <b>5. Who swore to avenge the wrong done to Cassandra and why? (2)</b> The Goddess Athena, because it was in her temple that Cassandra was raped. <b>Part Two.</b> <b>1. What is a Psychic? (1)</b> A psychic is someone, also called a medium, which is responsive to psychic forces. <b>2. What does ESP stand for? (1)</b> ESP stands for extra sensory perception. <b>3. Name all seven types of Psychic sensing and what they are. (7)</b> The six psychic senses I could find are these: claircognizant, clairaudient, clairboyant, clairsentient, clairgustant and clariscentrist. The first, claircognizant, means that things just come to you, things like knowing who is calling and who is at the door. The second, clairaudient, means that instead of seeing, you hear sounds inside your head. The third, clairvoyant, is seeing things using your inner eye. The fourth, clairsentient, is when you feel something in your gut, to put it blandly. The fifth, clairgustant, is when you taste something even when your mouth is empty. And lastly the sixth, clariscentrist, means that you smell things even when nothing that should smell that way is around you. <b>4. Who is Nostradamus and why do so many believe his words. (1)</b> Nostradamus was born in the early 16th century in France. A quatrain is a poem with four lines and something Nostradamus cryptically used to tell the future. People believe him because some of his quatrains seem to point to recent events. <b>5. In your own opinion did Nostradamus predict the tragic events of September 11th? (2)</b> "In the City of God there will be a great thunder, Two brothers torn apart by Chaos, while the fortress endures, the great leader will succumb", The third big war will begin when the big city is burning" - Nostradamus 1654 I found this in an article concerning Nostradamus’s predictions. After reading it and deciphering what I think it means, I was pretty spooked out. I believe that he did, because it fits perfectly with what happened. ‘The City of God’ could mean NYC. ‘Two brothers’ the Twin Towers. ‘The Fortress’ the Pentagon. ‘The Great Leader’ the USA. ‘The Third Big War,’ well, we’ve had two haven’t we? The attack of the Towers could’ve started another. <b>Part Three.</b> <b>1. What is a medium? (1)</b> A medium is someone thought to be able to communicate with the dead. <b>2. Who is Derek Acorah and why has he come under harsh criticism? (3)</b> Derek Acorah claims to be a medium. He is under harsh criticism because he has claimed to talk to the spirits of fictional characters. <b>3. What is autoatic drawing? (1)</b> (Automatic drawing?) Automatic drawing takes place when a medium draws on paper or even an Etch-A-Sketch. The marks made are supposed to be controlled by a spirit that had taken over the medium’s body. <b>4. What is Cold Reading? (1)</b> Cold reading is when someone convinces you that they know more about you then they actually do. <b>5. What did John Edward do in 2001 to spark a national outcry from the American public? (2)</b> John Edward is a psychic medium, proved to be so by Gray Schwartz. In 2001, he talked with families that had lost loved ones in the bombing. <b>Part Four.</b> <b>(Max of 20 points)</b> <b>Chose one from any of the following: ~ Cassandra and the Greek Gods ~ ~ Derek Acorah ~ ~ John Edwards ~ Now right an essay (no less then 60 words) on the effect the person you have chosen has had on today’s world and how we view them. She has been written about in many books including, <u>Age of Bronze: Sacrifice</u> by Erik Shanower. She has even been in video games: Soul Caliber I and II as Cassandra Alexandra. The Cassandra Syndrome is a term used to describe someone who thinks they can see the future. As you can see, Cassandra is still with us now, and will live on through myth. | Part One.
1. From Greek Mythology, who is Cassandra? (1)Cassandra was the daughter of King Priam of Troy and the Queen Hecube. In greek means “she who entangles man”. Cassandra (also called Alexandra) was the Trojan seeress who uttered true prophecies, but lacking the power of persuasion, was never believed. 2. What was the deal which she made and broke with the god Apollo? (1)There are two accounts of how Apollo granted Cassandra the gift of prophecy. The most well known is that Cassandra had fall asleep in the temple of Apollo. Her beauty roused the lust of Apollo who promised to teach her the art of prophecy in return for sexual favours. Cassandra agreed to Apollo’s terms but after learning the art of prophecy she denied her body which made Apollo very angry. 3. How did Apollo take his revenge and the consquences on the people of Troy? (2)Apollo instead of taking Cassandra’s gift away, added a condition to it, though Cassandra would always speak the truth no one would ever believe her. Because of that Troy was doomed. Before and during the Trojan war, Cassandra predicted countless times what would como of the war, tough no one believed her. 4. What was Cassandra's most famous prediction about the greek siege? (2)her most famous prediction was about the Trojan horse. While everyone received the horse with joy, thinking it to be a gift from the greeks, cassandra was the only one who saw the deceit behind the gift. 5. Who swore to anvenge the wrong done to Cassandra and why? (2)The goddess Athena was the one who avenged Cassandra, because Cassandra was raped by Ajax in one of her Temples. Athena asked permission to Zeus to punish Ajax, Zeus not only allowed it but also gave her a thunderbolt which she throw at Ajax’s ship who went safe to a rock but Poseidon on Athena’s request split the rock with his trident and Ajax fell into the sea and died. Part Two.
1. What is a Psychic? (1)A person with the ability to see, heard and feel by use of senses other than the natural senses. 2. What does ESP stand for? (1)Extra-sensory perception. It’s what a psychic has, the ability to know and see facts by using other than the senses of the physical body. 3. Name all seven types of Psychic sensing and what they are. (7)Clairvoyance – a form of ESP in which a person perceives distant objects, persons or events, or even perceiving hidden images and also the detection of types of energy no normally perceptible to humans. Clairaudience is the ability to hear things not audible within normal hearing ranges. This is an example of extra-sensory perception (ESP). It includes the audible perceptions of ghosts, spirits and those who are in the astral realm. Clairgustance is defined as a form of extra-sensory perception that allegedly allows one to taste a substance without putting anything in one's mouth. It is claimed that those who possess this ability are able to perceive the essence of a substance from the spiritual or ethereal realms through taste. Clairsentience is the term for the psi (or psychic) sense of touch. A clairsentient person is able to perceive energy fields (through physical sensations), including a person's aura and vibrations (such as voice and how words are strung together). This may also explain the ability to "sense" the presence of non-corporeal entities, such as ghosts. Retrocognition, also called postcognition, is the supposed ability to know something about a situation after its occurrence through psychic means. Retrocongition often involves ability to know the past (sometimes including distant past) of oneself and others, without direct observation of events. Precognition is a form of extra-sensory perception. Believers in precognition say it allows a "percipient" to perceive information about future places or events before they happen (as opposed to merely predicting them based on deductive reasoning and current knowledge). 4. Who is Nostradamus and why do so many believe his words. (1)nostradamus was born december 14th 1503, in France. He dedicated a good part of his life to medicine and healing. However he’s most famous for his prophecies. And the reason so many believed his words is because lots of his prophecies actually happened. 5. In your own opinion did Nostradamus predict teh tragic events of September 11th? (2)"In the City of God there will be a great thunder, Two brothers torn apart by Chaos, while the fortress endures, the great leader will succumb", "The third big war will begin when the big city is burning" - Nostradamus 1654." This is the quatrain that is believed to have predicted the 9/11, there’s only one big problem 1654!!!! Nostradamus was already dead! Maybe nostradamus really have predicted the 9/11 has he has predicted other events, but it’d have to be another quadrain, and as i’m not familiar with his work I can’t tell if there’s a more accurate quadrain. Part Three.
1. What is a medium? (1)A medium is a person who has the ability to talk with and for spirits. A medium can also be a chanel for the spirits to get inside it and get active voice. 2. Who is Derek Acorah and why has he come under harsh critism? (3)Derek Acorah is the stage name of Derek Johnson a supposed british medium. Derek come under harsh crticism because we was caught several times to be in contact with the spirit of non-real persons. He even once got tricked in a show into getting in contact with the spirit of fake people. Derek fall for it and claimed to be in contact with the spirit of those persons. So we was lying because those persons never existed. 3. What is autoatic drawing? (1)Is a way of expressing the subconscious. It was developed by the surrealists and it consists of allowing the hand to randomly across the paper. 4. What is Cold Reading? (1)It’s a technique used from interrogators to psychics in which they convinced someone that they know more than they actually know. 5. What did John Edward do in 2001 to spark a national outcry from the American public? (2)He started filming a special in which he’d met the relatives of the WTC victims and try to communicate with those who were killed. But the production office got so many agry calls that the special was cancelled. Part Four.Chose one from any of the following: ~ Cassandra and the Greek Gods ~ ~ Derek Acorah ~ ~ John Edwards ~ Now right an essay (no less then 60 words) on the effect the peron you have chosen has had on todays world and how we view them. Also take into account how TV Shows, Books and their Authors, Films, Plays and Poetry have used them to either mock or idolise them. ~ Cassandra and the Greek Gods ~Cassandra and her twisted gift has untill today repercussions in the world. She became a model for tragedy and romance in modern literature and she’s also the archetypical of someone who tells the truth but is not taken seriously. Cassandra has also influenced characters like River Tam from the TV series “Firefly” as well asplays inspired in her own story. Music hasn’t escaped to Cassandra’s influence too, from popular bands such as the ABBA to goth bands like the norweigen band “Theatre of Tragedy” they both have written a song named Cassandra. Anyway Cassandra’s unfortunate fate still has great influence in modern world, remembering us that sometimes someone who might look crazy is not that crazy. ---------- Sources http://www.nostradamus500.com/misconceptions.htmhttp://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Medium_(information)http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Derek_Acorahhttp://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Automatic_drawinghttp://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Cold_readinghttp://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/John_Edwardhttp://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Cassandrahttp://homepage.mac.com/cparada/GML/Cassandra.htmlwww.arthistory.sbc.edu/imageswomen/papers/fittoncassandra/cass2.html

| (I am very sad now I was almost done with my homework. And then I pressed a wrong button and EVERYTHING was erased *cries* So now I have to restart... And you better like my answers *growls* I had to do most of this twice And I'll try hard to find all my sources again...) Part One. 1. From Greek Mythology, who is Cassandra? (1) Cassandra was the Daughter of the Trojan King and Queen, Priam and Hecuba. She was said to be very beautiful, and she was a seer. However even though all her predictions were true no one belived her because the curse of Apollo. 2. What was the deal which she made and broke with the god Apollo? (1) She was to become his lover, if he taught her to be a seer. She however broke her promise and did not. Apollo was insulted and cursed her. 3. How did Apollo take his revenge and the consquences on the people of Troy? (2) Since no one believed her predictions, when she predicted about the Trojan Horse being a trap no one believed her causing tons of things to happen and making Troy fall into disarray 4. What was Cassandra's most famous prediction about the greek siege? (2) The Trojan Horse. She had predicted that The Trojan Horse was filled with armed forces, but no one believed, so they let the horse in. So later that night the armed forces came out, opened the gates for the rest of the armies and slaughtered whoever they pleased. 5. Who swore to anvenge the wrong done to Cassandra and why? (2) Athena, because she saw Cassandra being raped, and she did nothing about it because she was not on the Trojan's side but Cassandra was her priestess, and this rape disgusted her and filled her with rage. Part Two. 1. What is a Psychic? (1) A psychic is someone with paranormal abilities from mental telepathy to seeing into the future. 2. What does ESP stand for? (1) extra sensory preception 3. Name all seven types of Psychic sensing and what they are. (7) clairvoyance- This comes from the words clair and voyance in French which means clear seeing. Clairvoyance is when someone "sees" distant object, people, or even events. clairaudience- This is when someone can hear things that are not usually in the normal hearing range. It's said that they can hear ghosts or spirits. clairgustance- This is when someone can taste something before they even put it in their mouth. clairsentience- This is the ability to just touch something and know about it's present and past. And they may be also to feel someone's aura. precpgnition- This is the ability to see things before they happen. retrocognition- This is the ability to see the past without ever really studying what happened in that sepcific past in the first place. It's just knowing. second sight- This is the ability to see the future in visions, which are often symbolic. 4. Who is Nostradamus and why do so many believe his words. (1) Nostradamus was a man born in the 1500's. During his second marriage (His first marriage his wife and children died from the plague) he had become predicting things. He predicted things that could have saw the forecoming of Hitler, he even predicted his own death. That was actually his final prediction. He had looked to a priest and said "You will not find me alive at sunrise" He died that night. 5. In your own opinion did Nostradamus predict teh tragic events of September 11th? (2) No. The whole thing was a hoax. They put 1654 on there and at the time he was already dead. He may have predicted other things.. I am not sure. Maybe even some of his predictions have yet to come true, or maybe they will never come true. I'm not sure, but that quatrain in itself was a fake. Unless of course what I was readin was wrong and he did infact predict it.. If he did, I'd be quite amazed. But other things, other predictions in general say that he might be real. I saw a prection of Hitler somewhere that was quite creepy. But yes I'm pretty sure this prediction was not actually made by him. Part Three. 1. What is a medium? (1) Someone who porclaims that they can speak to the dead and spirits as well as the living 2. Who is Derek Acorah and why has he come under harsh critism? (3) One of the reasons was because he claimed on many occasions to be talking to the spirits of fictional characters. And he was said to be "possessed" by Kreed Kafer, which is an anagram od Derek Faker, and was also "possessed" by Ric Eedles which is an anagram of Derek Lies 3. What is autoatic drawing? (1) *coughs* automatic *coughs* This type of drawing is where someone's hand randomly moves across the paper (with their pencil) and its said to reveal some of your pyche. 4. What is Cold Reading? (1) Cold Reading is when you study someone, just by their looks, or limited knowledge they have of you to make it appear that you know more about them than you actually do. People from con artists, to palm reads, even to salespeople use this technique 5. What did John Edward do in 2001 to spark a national outcry from the American public? (2) After the September 11th attacks he was going to bring famlies over that were affected and try and speak with their dead loved ones. This caused tons of hate mail and such, so that show never aired. Part Four. Max of 20 points) Chose one from any of the following: ~ Cassandra and the Greek Gods ~ ~ Derek Acorah ~ ~ John Edwards ~ Now right an essay (no less then 60 words) on the effect the peron you have chosen has had on todays world and how we view them. Also take into account how TV Shows, Books and their Authors, Films, Plays and Poetry have used them to either mock or idolise them. Now John Edwards was an interesting man... He has a show called Crossing Over. I remember watching it once where he put his hand to his head and said "Is there a mother here who's name starts with an A?" He walked up to a lady who raised up her hand and he asked her if she'd experienced any loss recently and she said yes and started crying... As a child I thought it was phony. Snata had always seemed much more reliable. But at the same time paranormal events interest me. Their interesting! Come on! People like John Edwards bring those kind of things into the spot light. I'm not saying I believe he is real now. I'm just saying he is one of those people when your young, when you see him, that make you wonder. Or when your old I guess too. It doesn't matter. It's people like him that get you to questioning the world. If this is a good or a bad thing... I'm not sure. TV shows and such do make fun of him. South Park had made a show about him where they made him out to be a fraud who gets very angry if you question his abilities. In many cases the media loves to crack jokes about people like him who claim to have these abilities. I guess he can't be a horrible person. He supposedly gives closer (sp?) to people who had their loved one's taken away quickly, but once again, I don't believe in this. But at the same time it makes me sad, because a lot of times now, people don't have faith. They don't believe in things they can't see. Santa leaves children's minds younger and younger now. But then again John Edwards tries to convince you that he's actually doing these things. It's not faith at all. Maybe he is a fraud. Maybe our media is right to beat down his con mission. At the moment, I do have to say I don't care. Some people love this man, some people when they hear his name roll their eyes and walk away. All I really have to say is he's one of those people I'll never really believe, but his subject (of paranormal events) will always facinate me. http://www.in2greece.com/english/historymyth/mythology/names/cassandra.htmhttp://homepage.mac.com/cparada/GML/Cassandra.htmlhttp://www.arthistory.sbc.edu/imageswomen/papers/fittoncassandra/cass2.htmlhttp://www.arthistory.sbc.edu/imageswomen/papers/fittoncassandra/cass4.htmlhttp://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Cassandrahttp://homepage.mac.com/cparada/GML/WOODENHORSE.htmlhttp://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Extra-sensory_perceptionhttp://www.activemind.com/Mysterious/Topics/Nostradamus/biography.htmlhttp://www.activemind.com/Mysterious/Topics/Nostradamus/index.htmlhttp://www.activemind.com/Mysterious/Topics/Nostradamus/quatrain.htmlhttp://www.dreamscape.com/morgana/91101.htmoshttp://www.google.com/search?hl=en&lr=&rls=GGLG,GGLG:2006-09,GGLG:en&defl=en&q=define:medium&sa=X&oi=glossary_definition&ct=titlehttp://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Derek_Acorahhttp://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Cold_readinghttp://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Automatic_drawinghttp://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/John_Edward | |

| Divination Homework Part One1. From Greek Mythology, who is Cassandra? (1)Cassandra was the daughter of Priam and Hecuba of Troy. She had such beauty, that Apollo granted her the gift of prophecy. She had a curse placed on her so that nobody would believe her predictions. 2. What was the deal which she made and broke with the god Apollo? (1)She promised to be his consort. 3. How did Apollo take his revenge and the consequences on the people of Troy? (2)He placed the curse upon her that no one would believe her predictions, and so when she predicted the downfall of Troy, no one believed her. 4. What was Cassandra's most famous prediction about the Greek siege? (2)She warned of the Trojan horse and the death of Agamemnon. 5. Who swore to avenge the wrong done to Cassandra and why? (2)When Cassandra was raped by Ajax the Lesser in Athena’s temple, Athena swore to avenge her. Athena sunk Ajax’s ship. Part Two1. What is a Psychic? (1)A psychic is a person who is said to have special abilities, which include the ability to see the future, to contact dead people amongst others. 2. What does ESP stand for? (1)Extra-sensory Perception. 3. Name all seven types of Psychic sensing and what they are. (7)1. Clairvoyance- This is where the person can see distant objects, people and events. 2. Clairaudience- This is the ability to hear things not within the normal auditory range. 3. Clairsentience- This is the psychic sense of touch. 4. Precognition- Where a person is able to see events that haven’t happened yet. 5. Retrocognition- where someone can see a past event by looking through psychic means. 6. Telepathy- this is communication of the minds. 7. Aura Reading- an aura is an energy field surrounding a person, and people who have the ability can aura read. 4. Who is Nostradamus and why do so many believe his words. (1)Nostradamus was one of the most famous publishers of prophecies in the 16th century. He predicted many things, which people believe are still true to this day. People believe him because it seems as though several of his prophecies have come true. 5. In your own opinion did Nostradamus predict teh tragic events of September 11th? (2)No. Whilst I will not rule out prophecies and the like, I don’t believe that someone could predict things so far into the future. What happened on September 11th was not foreseen by anyone. Part Three.1. What is a medium? (1)A medium is a person who claims to have the ability to communicate with the dead and receive messages from them for their loved ones. They could also have the ability to channel the spirits. 2. Who is Derek Acorah and why has he come under harsh critism? (3)Derek Acorah is a medium who made his name in television programmes such as Living TV’s “Most Haunted”. He claims to have a spirit guide named Sam. He has come under such criticism because he has been caught on numerous occasions claiming to be in contact with spirits of fictional characters. The names of these were whispered before the filming of Most Haunted to try and prove that Acorah is a fake. 3. What is automatic drawing? (1)An automatic drawing is a drawing, the style of which was developed by surrealists, and is said to be an expression of the subconscious. The hand is allowed to move randomly across the paper and the end result may reveal something about the psyche. 4. What is Cold Reading? (1)This is a trick which is used by some to convince someone else that they know more about you than they do. Cold readers analyse by looking at clothing, hairstyle, gender, religion, race and ethnicity. 5. What did John Edward do in 2001 to spark a national outcry from the American public? (2)He met up with some of the relatives of people who had been victims of the attacks on the world trade center, claiming he could contact those who had died. However, when people found out about the show, it was cancelled before it aired. Part FourDerek AcorahI do not believe Derek Acorah to have had much of an effect on the world today, apart from getting people addicted to the television programme “Most Haunted”. Having watched the programme a few times, it is clear to me that no paranormal events occur during filming, everything seems to be a set up. However, it is fair to say that Acorah will have had an effect on the lives of individuals: he works as a medium, and allows people to believe he is contacting their deceased relatives or friends. Whilst I am sceptical about this, it could bring closure and happiness to a person. Sources: www.wikipedia.org | |

In your own opinion, did Nostradamus predict the tragic events of September 11th? I do have lots of trouble believing that such an event could be predicted. But Nostradamus made so many predictions, most of them predicting horrible events such at this one, that some of them were probably bound to happen. Part Three.1. What is a medium? A medium is someone who says he can receive messages from spirits or that he can channel such entities. 2. Who is Derek Acorah and why has he come under harsh critism? He was a psychic-medium, and the reason why he was so criticized was because he often said to be in connection with people who were merely fictional characters. 3. What is automatic drawing? Automatic drawing was developed by surrealist. It is a way of expressing the subconscious by letting the hand wander on the paper, drawing random things. 4. What is Cold Reading? Cold reading is a tactic used by people as hypnotist, salespeople, psychics, astrologist and etc. to convince someone they know more about him than they actually do. 5. What did John Edward do in 2001 to spark a national outcry from the American public? He started filming a special movie, meeting people who were relative to the World Trade Centre and Pentagon’s victims, and trying to contact those latter. Part Four.

Chose one from any of the following:
~ Cassandra and the Greek Gods ~
~ Derek Acorah ~
~ John Edwards ~
Now right an essay (no less then 60 words) on the effect the person you have chosen has had on today’s world and how we view them. Also take into account how TV Shows, Books and their Authors, Films, Plays and Poetry have used them to either mock or idolize them.Cassandra, as a part of the Greek Mythology, is still very talked about. She has a literary effect, mostly, because lots of people still read about her. I don’t think how we could see her though; the talk about seers and people who have been granted the gift of prophecy is really controversial. But already, we can see that her story is not really taken seriously as she is part of mythology, and myths are not usually believed to be true. She is not exactly idolized, but not mocked either. She is mostly talked about in Homer’s book, the Iliad, and a little bit in the Odyssey. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Cassandrahttp://www.arthistory.sbc.edu/imageswomen/papers/fittoncassandra/cass4.htmlhttp://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Psychichttp://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Extra-sensory_perceptionhttp://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Clairvoyancehttp://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Clairaudiencehttp://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Clairgustancehttp://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Clairsentiencehttp://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Precognitionhttp://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Retrocognitionhttp://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Second_sighthttp://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Nostradamushttp://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Medium_%28spirituality%29http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Derek_Acorahhttp://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Automatic_drawinghttp://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Cold_readinghttp://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/John_Edward
