| DADA HomeworkVAMPIRES - by skuldandyPart 11. Describe the appearance of a typical vampire Typical vampires usually are pale, wear long black capes, has fangs replacing two teeth and mostly has black eyes and hair. They are usually young, because it is said that they are immortal.2. Describe the appearance of a mythological vampire from anywhere in the world that is different to the typical vampire. In the modern folklore of Puerto Rico and Mexico, the chupacabra (goat-sucker) is said to be a creature that feeds upon the flesh or drinks the blood of domesticated animals, leading some to consider it vampiric. The "chupacabra hysteria" was frequently associated with deep economic and political crises, particularly during the mid-1990s. The chupacabra is also believed by some to be an extraterrestrial.3. What is said to keep a vampire away from you? Garlic, holy water, sun light. To kill a vampire you can also use a wooden stake or decapitation.4. What are the causes of vampirism? You can become a vampire if you've been bitten by a vampire (and some cultures say that you need to drink it's blood too), if you had a violent or unworthy death, if there was no funeral when you died...5. How are vampires checked for in Romania? Graves were often opened three years after death of a child, five years after the death of a young person, or seven years after the death of an adult to check for vampirism.6. Many cultures have various myths about bats and vampires. Choose one and explain. In South America, Camazotz was a bat god of the caves living in the Bathouse of the Underworld. In Europe, bats and owls were long associated with the supernatural because they were night creatures. On the other hand, the Gypsies thought them brought luck - they wore charms made of bat bones. And in England the Wakefield crest and those of some others have bats on them. There are only three species of vampires bats in the entire world, all of which occur in Central and South America. During the 16th century the Spanish conquistadors first came into contact with them and recognized the similarity between the feeding habits of the bats and those of their mythical vampires. It wasn't long before they began to associate bats with their vampire legends. Over the following centuries the association became stronger and was used by various people, including James Malcom Rhymer who wrote "Varney the Vampyre" in the 1840's. Stoker cemented the linkage of bats and vampires in the minds of people.7. What was Dom Augustine Calmet's opinion upon vampires? Dom Augustine Calmet, a French Benedictine monk wrote a book in 1746 which dared to question the existence of vampires, called "A Treatise on Apparitions, Spirits and Vampires" a.k.a. "The Phantom World". Calmet challenged the rampant vampire superstitions of the day and required proof before acceptance of a belief. He especially doubted that vampires could perform superhuman tasks, such as rising from the dead. He also analyzed and critiqued the supposed vampire epidemics throughout Europe, questioning their basis in reality. Part 2:Pick a vampire within film or television and discuss what historic tradition/myth it is most like? I picked Angel, a vampire from the TV show "Buffy, the vampire Slayer". Angel started to be a normal vampire, called Angelus. Bitten by another vampire (Darla, a female vampire), he became the most famous of all vampires - he became a legend. Along with Spike and Prusilla, Darla and Angel walked around the earth creating caos, feeding on whomever they saw, having better taste with children or "pure people". On day, though, Darla brought home a young gypsey girl to feed Angelus. However, when her faily found out about it, they cursed Angelus and gave him a soul. So now, Angelus was doomed to remember EVERY single victim he had feed of. Angelus tried to continue his life like he had been doing untill that day, but he couldn't. His soul wouldn't let him "eat" anymore babies or innocent people. Darla understood that and sent him away, telling him he was "disgusting". It wasn't long before he decided to work for good and change his name to Angel. Then, he met Buffy, a slayer, and fell in love. This kind of vampire - with a soul - despite the fact that he is the only vampire with a soul in the tv show, was communly used in japan, where they used to say a few words before going to bed so that every vampire around them would feel regrets for what they did and not bite them.Bonus:Post a picture of a vampire (some HOT vampire, huh? xD)Sources: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Vampirehttp://www.meta-religion.com/Paranormale/Vampires/in_the_age_of_ignorance.htm | |

Describe the appearance of a typical vampire (2) pale, with bright red lips(in my mind anyways) that stand out because the rest of them is so pale, dressed in black with black hair, tall. skinny. and have two fangs. 2. Describe the appearance of a mythological vampire from anywhere in the world that is different to the typical vampire. (2) 3. What is said to keep a vampire away from you? (2) they would give out garlic and whoever did not eat it was a vampire. 6. Many cultures have various myths about bats and vampires. Choose one and explain. (4) In slavic beliefs, a vampire could be considered of anyone who were born with teeth, tail or being buried the wrong way. the would put sharp things over a suspected vampire's neck when they were burried so that they would be beheaded. If animals started to die, it was suspected that a vampire was the one to be killing. 7. What was Dom Augustine Calmet's opinion upon vampires? (2) Part 2: Pick a vampire within film or television and discuss what historic tradition/myth it is most like? (10) the movie van helsing features an evil vampire named Dracula. | Part 1 1. Describe the appearance of a typical vampire (2)Vampires tend to be tall, thin, with pale skin and pointed fangs. They will normally have black hair and sharp features, and stereotypically dress in cloaks. 2. Describe the appearance of a mythological vampire from anywhere in the world that is different to the typical vampire. (2)In Northern India, there is a vampire called the BrahmarākŞhasa, which has a head encircled with intestines and a skull from which it drinks blood. 3. What is said to keep a vampire away from you? (4)If you have garlic about your person, a vampire is likely to stay away. Also, a silver cross, a house of God, and a crucifix will also keep vampires away. 4. What are the causes of vampirism? (4)The following are all said to be the causes of vampirism: suicide, heresy, sinners, witches and wizards, werewolves, illegitimate children of illegitimate parents, children with birthmarks, children with red hair, seventh sons or daughters. 5. How are vampires checked for in Romania? (2)Graves were opened three years after the death of a child, five years after the death of a young person and seven years after the death of an adult to check if they had become vampires. 6. Many cultures have various myths about bats and vampires. Choose one and explain. (4)In European cultures, bats have long been associated with vampires, because they are night creatures. For example, in Spain in the 16th Century, vampire bats were first recognised as such, given the name because of their resemblance in habits to vampires. 7. What was Dom Augustine Calmet's opinion upon vampires? (2)Calmet’s opinion was ambiguous to say the least. He produced a thesis in which he documented evidence for the existence of vampires, however he appeared sceptical towards their existence throughout his work. Part 2: Pick a vampire within film or television and discuss what historic tradition/myth it is most like? (10)I will be looking at Count Orlock from the film “Nosferatu”. The vampire in this film is one of the traditional sort: the sombre clothes, the pointed fangs, pallid complexion. The film was very similar to Dracula, having been loosely based on the book after the rights to film it were not given. As the film was German, the vampire in the film is stereotypical of the European vampire. At the end of the film, Orlock is destroyed when a character sacrifices herself to him. Describe the appearance of a mythological vampire from anywhere in the world that is different to the typical vampire. Ch'ing Shih are from china they appear as livid humans immaterial form is a glowing Sphere. They kill with their poisonous and not with the draining of blood. If a Ch’ing Shih comes across a pile of rice it must count it before moving on and it can be killed by normal weapons and course sunlight. 3. What is said to keep a vampire away from you? (4) Wearing garlic, wearing the holy cross and carrying holy water 4. What are the causes of vampirism? (4) Being killed by a vampire sucking your blood. Suicide, living a cruel or evil life, excommunication, being a witch or doing black magic, lycanthrope and revenge. 5. How are vampires checked for in Romania? (2) 6. Many cultures have various myths about bats and vampires. Choose one and explain. (4) 7. What was Dom Augustine Calmet's opinion upon vampires? (2) He was bias and wrote about encounters with real life vampires Part 2: Pick a vampire within film or television and discuss what historic tradition/myth it is most like? (10) Interview with a vampire- I think this story does not lives up to the traditional myth about vampires it keeps in contexts about the drinking of blood, the sunlight but that is about it. Anne rice’s story shows her own view on vampires and what she would think vampires would be like. In her story they have more compassion then most vampires and they also are show what they are like when they are week unlike most films where it only shows the power of vampires and never their weakness. The creature is always female and enjoys sucking the blood from children and women in labor. But men are not safe from it either. 3. What is said to keep a vampire away from you? Garlic - used on windows, doors, around neck, sometimes under armpits, mixed with water it can be sprinkled or sprayed. Holly - placed around your house. Fish nets - placed on windows or doors or in graves to distract vampires who are obsessed with detangling things. When he was told of his planned wedding, he asked to think about it and went walking. While out he heard a beautiful voice and turned to see a stunningly attractive woman. Even though he knew nothing of her, he begged to be allowed to marry her and it was agreed. Weeks of happiness followed the marriage, marred only by Nadilla's refusal to eat evening meals. Growing rather suspicious Abdul watched and followed Nadilla as she left at midnight. He witnessed her and her scary companions eating corpses. He confronted her, but she ignored his worries. That night she attacked him and he impaled her with his sword. Thinking her dead, her body was placed in a tomb. Three days later, Nadilla returned with superhuman strengthand Abdul ran for his life. The following day he went to he tomb and found her body in perfect condition and large amount of blood spilled in the coffin. He placed her on a pyre with spices and frankincense and burned her. Her ashes were scattered in the Tigris River. 7. What was Dom Augustine Calmet's opinion upon vampires? That they were men who have been dead for some time and would come back from their graves and disturb the living, sucking blood and draining their victims. | Part 1 1. Describe the appearance of a typical vampire (2) In most stories you'll hear that they have long fangs in the place of eye teeth, they are tall, very pale, however in folklore vampires are described to have dark ruddy skin. Nowadays we picture them in cloaks, and for thewm to be well dressed and quite good looking. The appeareance of the vampire has definately changed over time 2. Describe the appearance of a mythological vampire from anywhere in the world that is different to the typical vampire. (2) In nothern India there is a vampirelike creature called a brahmaparusha. Its head was incircled with intestines, and it had a skull out of which it drank blood. 3. What is said to keep a vampire away from you? (4) Garlic, holdy water, the crucifix, direct sunlight, on graves they would put these millet or poppy seeds, because vampires were supposedly obsessed with counting things. 4. What are the causes of vampirism? (4) If a vampire drinks your blood and you do not die, you will become a vampire, but to remain so you'd have to drink the blood of a vampire. (wow...) If you were born irregular, like with a tail, or if you were a suicide, a criminal, or had a extremly violent death, it was said you would be cursed to become a vampire. It was also said if you were born with teeth or were concieved on certain days, you'd become a vampire. 5. How are vampires checked for in Romania? (2) A vampire in a grave could be checked by looking for holes in the earth, a corpse that wasn't decomposed and had a red face, having one foot in the corner of a coffin, and if yo distributed garlic in a church, you could check who didnt eat it. 6. Many cultures have various myths about bats and vampires. Choose one and explain. (4) The Soanish in the 16th century saw vampire bats, noiced the similarities between them and their mthoical vampires and from then on added them to thier vampire legends. 7. What was Dom Augustine Calmet's opinion upon vampires? (2) He believed they existed, and put out a treatise in 1746 which explained why filled with reports and such, but on the whole it seemed that he was skeptical on the whole thing anyway. Part 2: Pick a vampire within film or television and discuss what historic tradition/myth it is most like? (10) COunt Dracula is the type of vampire many of us think of now. COuntless movies were made after the novel. Many Dracula first appeared to be quite a gentlemen, until you find him to be quite.. evil. He is a typical vampire. Black hair, pale face, fangs, and he sleeps in a coffin. He is what has made the stereotypical vampire which we see today. | Part 1
1. Describe the appearance of a typical vampire (2)There are many different appearances of the vampire these days, though the typical is that of a human though very pale. In more historical ideas, a vampire walks around in a black cloak baring its fangs all the time. 2. Describe the appearance of a mythological vampire from anywhere in the world that is different to the typical vampire. (2) The Romanian vampire is extremely different to that of a typical vampire. It can take any form, such as dogs, dragons or spirits and instead of drinking blood it is said to drink the sun and moon. 3. What is said to keep a vampire away from you? (4)Crosses, garlics, holy water, silver - all dependant of the myth you are looking at 4. What are the causes of vampirism? (4)Again, this depends on the myth and what part of the world it originates. The typical one is being bitten by a vampire and drinking its blood in return. In other cultures it is said that you can be born a vampire, for example if you are born with a tail or teeth. 5. How are vampires checked for in Romania? (2)The graves of the dead are checked for holes or other such things as scratch marks etc 6. Many cultures have various myths about bats and vampires. Choose one and explain. (4)In South America, Camazotz was a bat god of the caves living in the Bathouse of the Underworld.During the 16th century the Spanish conquistadors first came into contact with them and recognized the similarity between the feeding habits of the bats and those of their mythical vampires. It wasn't long before they began to associate bats with their vampire legends 7. What was Dom Augustine Calmet's opinion upon vampires? (2) He believed that if a vampire existed it would be from suicide victims. Part 2: Pick a vampire within film or television and discuss what historic tradition/myth it is most like? (10) Bonus: Post a picture of a vampire (5) http://www.eng.umu.se/monster/inger/doc/linguistics.htmhttp://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Vampirehttp://www.chebucto.ns.ca/~vampire/vhist.html | |
