| Welcome to the first essay of the term!
For the first essay I would like a minimum of 300 words and no more then 500 to discuss the controversey of Runes and their readings. As we already know Rune Readings can be very obscure and aren't always reliable. But there are those that truly believe in the readings. In your essay choose a side and debate the finer points of your arguement. Remember to please site your sources or points will be deducted from your essay. The person with the best essay will receive an extra 5 points on their essay which is worth a total of 50 points.

| Okay I think I've done this wrong but well at least I tried eh.
Many people believe that runes are untrue and that the are mindless scribbling. But these are the words of our ancestors they wrote down these things millions of years ago and they properly never thought that we would read them. One problem though is how do we know what we are translation is correct. We could have got the whole alphabet wrong and be making up any random rubbish and posting it. But do you really think that is possible? If we had gotten it all wrong how come the translated version of a rune makes sense? So I bring it to you how could we possibly get the translations wrong yeah we might get a few odd bits wrong but never full translations because then they could come out like odhgu jagj rrr instead of Mrs Polly Potter. Many people might think that they are inaccurate because there is absolutely no evidence that, that is what they say. Yes of course we have the word of translators but how can we not tell that maybe they have taken educated guesses at it all. How do we all know that they haven’t simply messed it all up or that the runes were children drawing on rocks. Things like this could not possibly be true “The world of Suikoden uses "runes" as a source of special abilities and magic. In addition to the common "lesser runes" there are 27 "True Runes" from which the lesser are born. True Runes hold immense power, and grant immortality to the their bearers. But many times, it is not all it is cracked up to be, especially considering that True Runes have a will of their own, and a weak-minded person will not be the master of the rune, but a mere vessel for it.” How could something hold a powerful thing. Well simple that is properly an old tale told my many people over and over again. And so the evidence that the runes are true is incontrovertible. Every argument that the other side has can be crossed as shown above. | |

| Acquiring Spells Magic such as Glorantha consists of myths such as re-enacting of a god, and when using these myths it alters the material world by which the caster chooses. When a priest or initiate learns of a new spell, they will be taught the myth and how to use it to change the material world. By learning these new spells gives a person more status in gaining points for there cult such as the Lore Skill. However, a person will lose no power, but they may not have the strength in magic to use the myth on the world. Within each chant has a set of rune which is different for each cast. Those runes are what power the spells and help the caster in creating his goals. Spells are divided into to different areas, one being spells and the other being rituals. The runes that are listed below are the most efficacious runes to use to date. If a cult wishes to use a divine spell but don’t have access to a certain rune; it is possible to substitute for a different one. For example, a Storm Khan wishes to cast Spirit Block, but does not have a Spirit rune, and so decides to use two Death runes to power the spell. Opposed Power Runes cannot be used (e.g., cannot be used to cast Heal Wound.
Acquiring Runes Normal people don’t realize that we all have unexpected power within ourselves. It’s not enough to use divine spells unless they use divine magic. The magician has to convert their power to a runic power. Worship ceremonies a priest may convert one or more points from an unexpected power to an aspect of their god. Runes that are owned by a god can be obtained by a supplicant. When a person first joins a cult there is a ceremony. In this ceremony an aspect of their power is placed to a rune within the cult. This is the greatest sign of piety to convert more power at one time.
