| Ancient Runes Essay: Runes and You
Welcome to the first essay of the new term! This will be the first of many essays within this class. This term we’ll start out with a rather simple one that hopefully everyone can enjoy. Please make sure that the essay is no more that 500 words and no less than 300 words. Be sure to discuss all points, opinions and facts within your essay. Your task, if you so choose to accept it, is to choose two runes within the Elder Futhark system (for example the fehu and uruz runes) and using what you know, relate them to yourself. Why do they best represent you as a person? As we know each rune stands for something. The essay is worth 40 points, if you include pictures for each you will receive an extra 5 points giving you a possible 45 points. The person with the best essay will also receive another additional 5 points making this class worth a:
Possible points total: 50
Make sure to add sources! Anyone that forgets to add their sources will automatically have 5 points deducted!
EDIT: Points possible for this class is now 70! | |

| Raidô & Mannaz Raido means ride, depart, arrival or journey which is the r-rune in the Elder Futhark. It can also mean wagon or chariot. I think it relates to me because currently, I'm am ready to start a new year at school so that means that I am 'departing' from summer vacation and 'arriving' at school. The wagon part of definition represent me because I move around a lot like traveling. Raido can also mean a cycle like the wheel of life. I think that relates to me also because I have to go to school every year (until I graduate from college) and that is a cycle that I have to go through. Also this rune can mean that it is a journey of self discovery. In my life, the thing that relates to that is learning more about myself. Throughout life I can learn what I am good at, what is my hobby and I think that is like 'a journey of self discovery' -which is another meaning of the rune. Mannaz means man, human being, or individual which is the m-rune in the Elder Futhark. That rune is pretty self-explanatory why it's related to me. The obvious meaning why Mannaz is related to me is because I am a human being. And even though the rune means 'man' and I am female, it has another meaning of 'the thinker' which means that whoever the rune symbolizes can think. That definition is related to me because after all I can think. Another meaning of Mannaz is the characteristic of the individual being. Some examples are: sly, shy and social. That relates and represents me because every individual have their own way of acting and I act my own way different from anyone else. Since the Mannaz symbol symbolizes humans, how they act and me, I think it means people in general. http://www.runemaker.com/futhark/raido.shtmlhttp://members.aol.com/Taransae/Raido.htmlhttp://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Mannazhttp://sunnyway.com/runes/meanings.html | |

| Gebô and KenazGebô represents gift or the ideal of generosity. Generosity definitely represents me as a person because I give a lot back to my Muggle community. Currently, for my Girl Scout Gold Award Project, I am running an arts camp for teens in a local shelter. I have completely managed and arranged for the boys and the girls to participate in and learn from various activities including cooking, drama, interior design, scrapbooking, karate, yoga and progressive relaxation, belly dancing, and music. All of the food for the cooking as well as ice cream parties I have planned have been paid for with money out of my own pocket, and I have spent over 110 hours planning and doing this project. In the winter, I help to host and run a holiday party for these teens. I help to collect holiday gifts to give to the teens through Girl Scout troops in my area and run the party in which the teens receive needed items such as clothing and toiletries. I also coordinate a project with my Tri-M Music Honor Society called Share the Music, where we raise money to buy instruments and collect new and used instruments to donate to schools who cannot afford instruments. Generosity definitely represents me as a person because of all I do to help my community. Kenaz represents creativity and passion. I always come up with creative ideas and solutions to problems I have. I find inspiration in the smallest of places and use it to create something bigger and better. The camp I have created for the teens, for instance, took much creativity and innovation to create. In my life, no matter how tough things get, I always try to enjoy and involve myself in activities that I am passionate about. I play clarinet and guitar to express my emotions and keep me balanced in my life. I also love to read, write, and manipulate photographs in Paint Shop Pro. I also love to be in charge, and I get much joy out of being treasurer of my Tri-M Music Honor Society, Captain of my Varsity Affirmative Debate Team, and Secretary of my Girl Scout group (Girls Enjoying Membership in Scouting). Kenaz also represents love, and i have love for many people in my life. I would be nowhere without the love I have for my parents, my sister, and my best friend. Everything I do I do because of the passion I have for it. Kenaz thus represents me as a person because it represents the creativity and passion I have for living my life. | Wunjô, which represents joy relates to me in many different ways. Oneis that I have lived a very happy life that and I do not regret anything that has happened over the past few years. I have two loving parents and many other relatives and friends that brighten my day everyday by making me laugh or just by hanging out with them. Even during those tough times they are there to help me get through them and in return I try to help them out as well. When I see that others are going through a rough time and they seem like they need some help I try to help them out. When I see that I was able to help someone else out I am quiet happy that I was able to make their day a bit more bearable. I try to help out as many people as possible and when I see that they are happy I am happy too.
ûruz reprsents water or precipitation in the form of rain. I am able to relate to water because a human body is composed mostly of water. Without water there would be no animal or plant life here on the planet Earth. Living things need water and this includes you, me and any house plants that you might have in your house. We need water in order to do our every day things or even just to be able to do whatever we like to do and without water we would just dry up and die. There are many planets without water and because of this they do not support any living life. If there wasn’t any rain then there wouldn’t be any plants. No plants means no animals. If this where to happen then we wouldn’t have any food to eat.

| Fehu Possessions won or earned, earned income, luck. Abundance, financial strength in the present or near future. Sign of hope and plenty, success and happiness. Social success. Energy, foresight, fertility, creation/destruction (becoming). Fehu Reversed or Merkstave: Loss of personal property, esteem, or something that you put in effort to keep. It indicates some sort of failure. Greed, burnout, atrophy, discord. Cowardice, stupidity, dullness, poverty, slavery, bondage.I think this rune applies to me because: I've won a lot of things because I got lucky. I'm about to get a job, which will give me income. My dad is about to get a big job and he'll get paid a lot more. I always try to look on the brightside of things and keep hope. Lately I've been really happy and have had a lot of success in whatever I try to do. I know a lot of people and I'm on good terms with most of them, so if I ever need something I can find a way to get it. I have a lot of energy. I can usually tell what someone is thinking or what they are going to say next. Thurisaz Reactive force, directed force of destruction and defense, conflict. Instinctual will, vital eroticism, regenerative catalyst. A tendency toward change. Catharsis, purging, cleansing fire. Male sexuality, fertilization. (Thorr, the Thunder god, was of Giant stock.)Thurisaz Reversed or Merkstave: Danger, defenselessness, compulsion, betrayal, dullness. Evil, malice, hatred, torment, spite, lies. A bad man or woman. Rape?I think this rune applies to me becuase: I usually do the first thing that comes to my mind. I hate when things stay the same for a long time. I am always doing dares and challenges, no matter what they are. | |

Tiwaz (T: Tyr, the sky god.) Honor, justice, leadership and authority. Knowing where one’s true strength lie. This relates to me in a huge level. As I’m working my way through; my current job placement as a police officer. I’ve heard these words several times within my platoon. These are the words each officer lives by, honor, justice, authority and leadership. An excellent source of a rune to be created that 100% relates to me. I do love how knowing where one’s true strength lie[i] statement. It sounds so correct and helps me to see that there is only one true strength, and we must learn to master it. I know that haven’t master this yet, as I’m not sure really what my true strength is yet, or in reality maybe I do but are unsure about it? It could be possible that each of us knows it, but can’t understand what it truly is? I guess then everyone needs to work on it and try to make the best judgment to the best of their knowledge.
Isa: (I: Ice.) A challenge or frustration. Psychological blocks to thought or activity, including grievances. Through the years I’ve had to face several challenges to get to were I am today. And I know that in the future there will be a lot more to come. I do like however that the runes states challenge or frustration as sometimes we like challenges and other times the challenge becomes a frustration. The statement [i]psychological blocks to thought or activity, including grievances started to sound a bit strange and it took me a while to understand what they were stating. I guess its trying to say something about my psychological mind and how it can take control and block to make you believe something that has happened.

| Laguz (L:Water, or a leek) I chose Laguz because it represents many different aspects of my life. The first being water. I'm a competitive swimmer and I can barely stand being out of water. When I swim it gives me a sense of peace, just me moving through the water. The next thing that Laguz represents that is very important to me is dreams. When I was younger, my grandma gave me a journal to keep memories of all of my dreams. I got through that journal in about 3 months, and have been writing and buying new journals since I was seven. My grandma used to tell me that I should pay attention to my dreams because they could tell me something that I wouldn't know on my own. After my grandma passed away, I couldn't sleep at all and I was pretty much devastated. The first night that I did fall asleep, I had a dream about her and after that it didn't hurt so badly. Those are my two reasons for choosing Laguz, but this rune also represents healing through renewal, travel, and imagination. It is the "L" rune in the Elder Futhark system. Kenaz (K: Beacon or torch) The second rune that I chose to represent me is Kenaz. This rune stands for creativity, inspiration, harnessed power, and passion. When I first read the description for Kenaz I instantly thought of acting because, in my opinion, it requires all of those. When I first started acting in third grade, I instantly fell in love with it and it quickly turned into my passion. I've met a lot of friends through all of the plays and classes I've taken over the years and we have always had fun making up new skits and basically just letting our creativity flow. This is the "K" rune in the Elder Futhark system. Clicky for Sourcey (: | |
