Lupin's Life before Hogwarts?

I was listening to the latest episode of potterficweekly, and they brought up a really good point about Lupin, which then raised further questions on what he did in the time between the Potter's death and going to Hogwarts to teach.

So we first see him on the train, and he is described as having a suitcase with Professor R. J. Lupin on it in peeling letters.

This seems to indicate that the suitcase is old - the peeling letters. Yet it says "Professor". So are we to believe that Lupin was a professor prior to teaching in Harry's third year?

If so, where?

Perhaps his Father was a professor, and had the same initials.

Or is this just a mistake on JKRs part?

And any theories on what Lupin did in those 12 years?

Well he would have had to gone to school or something for teaching. I don't think they would pick any old wizard off of the street to teach. Well than after that he could have bought the suitcase saying that very thing and maybe for about 8 years (if it takes four years of schooling to become a teacher) he would have been looking for a job. Over those eight years he could have been teaching or wondering around trying to find a teaching job. I would like to say that he was teaching but which school would take a werewolf?? Maybe schools would take him until the students or parents found out he was a teacher and tossed him out of their school and he would move onto another one. It would explain why is his suitcase is so old. He didn't have the money to buy a new one over the years while he was changing from school to school. That's my thoughts
