Here I sit before you all,
Of which I see are very tall,
Thinking which house you must go
Sometimes turning your friend to foe.

The founders gave me a place,
And it is not above your face,
To sort the future students
Into houses instead of tents.

Right now you might be thinking
'Well there here and got the liking
To do thier job of picking.'
So I tell you in the future
When you are all more mature
The founders won't be here for sure.

I am a hat not a blouse
So I can place you in your house.

Gryffindor might be your fate
Or Slytherin we all love to hate,
Sweet Hufflepuff whom are kind
Or Ravenclaw with steady minds
But whatever house your in

Just about a week ago
Gredric ripped me off his head
he told the other founders
I could help and choose instead
The four founders thought and sat around
they planned all day and night
they needed a place to call a school
a place to teach just right
they found a castle and changed the name
to Hogwarts such great joy
they promised each other they'd teach the magicked
every single girl and boy
Gryffindor wanted only those
who could hold their heads up high
Ravenclaw claimed all them
whose intelligence is nigh
Slytherin took only pure of blood
and shoved the rest away
but hufflepuff she took the rest
and taught them every day
Get ready to learn
if knowledge is what you need
to help you get ahead in life
Magic will help you to sucseed
Now if you're brave and willing
please put me on your head

To sort you is my task
This will be my first try at that
In one of four houses
You shall be placed

Where you are put you shall fit
I shall make sure of it
The four founders of the school

The ones with Godric shall be brave

Though houses may quarrel

You wouldn’t think I’m cool,

In this school of friendship and fun,
We have our houses four,
Hopefully you won’t hide and run,
Maybe you’ll be a Gryffindor?
These red lions are brave and daring,
Though in their hearts, they are caring.

Perhaps you’ll play in the Quidditch league,
As many are wont to do,
Or maybe you’ll need some TLC,
When duelling matches are through?
Perhaps I’ll sort you into Slytherin, the house of the snake,
But if I place you there, what kind of member will you make?

Then there are the many classes,
To prove your brains and wit,
But will your efforts result in passes,
Or will you simply quit?
The Ravenclaw’s aren’t afraid of working,
But there are those that prefer lurking.

Perhaps a game of chess will be won,
It’s a bucketload of fun,
Watch out! There's much work to be done,

The last house of the four is dear old Hufflepuff,
Their members are fair and loyal, they’re made of stronger stuff!

Welcome to Hogwarts, my lovely little mice
Relax. No need to be tense,
I shall have you all sorted in a thrice
The wise, the middling and the dense.

Some of you are nervous, and some less so
I beg you not to worry,
The Founders did upon me bestow
The wisdom to sort out this flurry.

The bravest of you shall in Gryffindor be
As great Godric was of nothing afraid,
The most cunning shall shelter in Slytherin's lee
He acquiesces, though he wants to be paid.

All the clever and intelligent ones, you'll find your place
In Ravenclaw, where these qualities abound,
And those that care most about loyalty and fairness
Will in Hufflepuff soon be found.

I entreat you to listen, and try to understand
Separation is at times a necessary venture,
But you must be separate while learning hand in hand
Thus you can embark on the ultimate adventure.

I ask you not to twitch while I look in your head
I promise it won't hurt a bit
Though I am just a hat, neither alive nor dead

Where I do have to choose

With student very cunning,
If I see that talent in you,

No matter what choice I do make,
There’s something you must know.
These houses must work together
If we’re all to grow.

On that day, there I sat
Up atop Godric’s ear
As I listened to the original four
Argue their way through another year.
I feared for the future
Of their wonderful school
And only hoped
That all didn’t end in a duel.
Then it all got quiet
Except for the slam of the door.
Anyone could count
There were three, instead of four.
The remaining leaders
Knew what must be done,
And then I was bewitched
And began to have fun.
They explained what would come
And how I must complete my job,
Determining their place in the school
Be them named Alice, Jakur, Famel, or Rob.
Godric Gryffindor would only take
Those who where full of courage and honor.
Salazar Slytherin was prideful and wanted
Only those with a magical mother and father.
Rowena Ravenclaw was sure
She only wanted those with the best minds.
While Helga Hufflepuff would gladly
Take any and all kinds.
Now take a seat on my trusty stool,
Don’t worry, I won’t treat you wrong
And I’ll gladly place you
Where you belong.
