Welcome to another DADA class, some of the older members will find this class similar to one done before, however I will be checking if they get carried away in copy/pasting.

Part 1

For this part I want you to write an essay involving a number of aspects that identify the Death Eaters:

· Recognizing the Signs:

o Relation with other

· Adult behavior:

o Psychological characteristics

o Ways/methods of killing

· Ideology

o What do they seek?

o How they feel about their goals and in what way that interferes with others welfare

This part is worth a total of 60 points, and a minimum of 300 words is required! You can add your intuition about this subject to your essay once there’s a formal place where you can find this, though what you do find don’t forget to cite your sources!

Now I want you to pick your favorite DE or the one you think it fits the most with the general Death Eaters profile and explain his/her characteristics and life comparing it to the what you said above. 40 points, 150 words minimum for this and the same rule as the first part.

Part 1

Death Eaters are mostly born in family that practice Dark Arts or their parents are Death Eaters before them. When they are just children, their parents might encourage them to learn Dark Arts, and insult other 'low class' people. The Death Eaters to be will also be encouraged to make friends with the children of real Death Eaters to gain status among them. Even if the kid is not born in a 'dark' family, they could be a Death Eater nevertheless. For example, Peter aka Wormtail, the main reason that he turned 'dark' was probably because he either wanted power or was scared. Peter was the kind of person who was always a follower. He liked to hide behind the people who he thought was the most powerful to feel safe. So the other ‘signs’ that a child may become a Death Eater is probably because of fear. The signs that an adult are Death Eaters are less obvious. Even though they may look perfectly sane and work for the government (like Lucius Malfoy), they does not mean they are not a Death Eater. But most Death Eaters have an insane look, like Bellatrix Black Lestrange, because of the years they are kept in Azkaban, and the things they see during the war. Death Eaters like to make their victim suffer. One method that Bellatrix use on the Longbottoms was the Cruciatus Curse which makes the victims suffer almost intolerable pain. One curse that the Death Eaters use to just cleanly kill of their victims in the famous Avada Kedavra curse that was used on the Potters. Many believe that the Death Eater’s become death eaters because they like to kill for fun. While that might be true, Death Eaters also want revenge on others, power, and some like Lucius Malfoy want to eliminate all Muggle-born people so they would not ‘taint’ their world. If their plan does not go as they want it, they mostly get scared because they don’t want their master (Voldermot) to be angry at them. The most famous symbol that is associated with Death Eaters is the Dark Mark. The Dark Mark is on each Death Eaters left arm and the Death Eaters always put this symbol over the place they had just destructed or the people they had just killed like a symbol of ‘landmark’ with the words of Morsmordre.

Part 2

The person who I think fits the traits above is Lucius Malfoy. He is a typical Death Eater who grew up in a ‘dark’ family and was a ‘ring leader’ during his years at Hogwarts among the Slytherins. The important thing is that he is a pure-blood that is in the high class in society since he

He hates Muggle-borns as most Death Eaters do and was seen visiting Knockturn Alley with a list of ‘dark’ artifacts for the owner of Borgin and Burke's. He has quite an influence over the Minister of Magic and seemed to sway him by donating a lot of money and saying he had been under the Imperius Curse during Voldemort's first rise to power. Lucius is in Voldemort’s Inner Circle and was a Death Eater since the first war. Like many Death Eaters he likes to hurt others and think that he is the most superior. For example, he thinks Dumbledore is a poor headmaster and tried to kick him out in CoS. He also mistreats his house elves. Even though he lost Voldemort’s favor after the disaster in Department of Mysteries, he is still a typical symbol for a Death Eater.

MY ESSAY HAS SOME QUOTES FROM THE DEATHLY HOLLOWS!

"Death Eaters. Those words strike fear in the hearts of many. Most of the time, you can tell how a child will be, by their parents behaviour. For most of the death eaters, they grew up in houses filled with dark artifacts, and "pureblood's first" thoughts clouding ther little brains. They were tught at an early age to hate all the muggle borns, mudbloods, and to kill muggles. It was supposed to be those only of the purest blood were allowed to know the secrets of magic, and that they must band together, and never intermingle with those less worthy. Their were meetings of these death eaters at their house from time to time for as far back as they could remember, and they were taught to play only with the children of other death eaters. They were taught that Lord Voldermort, the "Dark Lord", was going to rid the world of all the evil for them.
Their relationships with their parents could differ. They might be close to their mother, since she would be the one always home, and look up to their father, even though he was away all the time, just because he was away on business for "Their Lord". Lord Voldermort was somthing of a superman to these children. Some might never see their parents, being kept content by a relative, or mabey even a house elf. Some may even have been left at home alone for long periods of time, or brought along on missions so their mothers could feed them.
Their relationships with others all matterd on the others blood. If they were of purebloods, they might either be a lover, or a minion. Most of these children never had friends. They walked in gang, with the biggest, or most influential person at the time the leader. They spread their hate, and walked around praticing curses and hexes on others. They usually were conceited, and deemening. Still, some may just be the frightened and weak that followed the other children, trying to fit in.
As adults, they were inducted into the death eaters, and went on to follow through with their lords bidding. They might look insane, but most could put up a sheild and never show the world their ture feelings. Not one of them was innocent, as they killed for fun, and destroyed their souls. They might be important figures in society, or just another guy on the street. They all had an unhealthy obsession with killing, and praticing the dark arts was one of their favorite things. Most of them had minds so clouded with the pureblood ideal that they didnt even care about killing the innocent, and they remained perfectly sane, untill after azkaban.
Their main method of killing was the Avada Kedvara curse. Some just did this to anyone in their way. Others, like Bellatrix Lestrange, liked to "play with their food before they killed" (dumbledore, deathly hollows). They would tourture, chase, and tease their pray, then jump as they tried to escape, or mabey even just do somthing worse. In Bellas case, she left two of her "prey" in a state worse than death. She tourtured the Longbottoms into insanity.
Most of them seek to rid the world of the those unworthy. They kiled the mudbloods and muggles so that they could eventually come out of hiding. They feel that their goals were the best, and that "Magic is Mite" (Deathly Hollows).
Some of the symbols associated with Death Eaters is the Dark Mark, a picture of a skull with a snake coming out of its mouth. This is associated with them because it is the picture that is burned into their arm, and the symbol that they put into the air after a killing.

What to watch for, and how to prevent it.

Every wizarding parent wants there child to, grown and evolve into the best human witch or wizard they can be. The worst fear of many is that there child grows up to be a cruel adult and having them turn into a follower of You Know Who. Many people cant spot the signs of becoming a Death Eater, but as researchers have found, there is a specific pattern that many death eaters followed, on there road to becoming what they are. Though your child at a young age or even an adult age could be on this path, you as a parent can prevent it from happening, just by noticing the signs and stopping a chain of events that occur for the transformation from a normal witch or wizard… to one of the cruel human beings that kill muggels and cause havoc among the wizarding world.

So what signs can you look for in a child to know if it’s on the wrong path? Well simple as it seems, if you get reports that your child is not acting out in class, but around peers, you simply have something to worry about. Most death eaters are not stupid, but do take joy even at a young age of ruining the moods of others around them. If you constantly get messages from the headmaster of the school about how well your child is doing in class, but how there social skills are not as brilliant as there grades, you should immediately take action with your child. Putting them into functions and other areas, and teaching them yourself how to socialize. Be careful not to pester them about it to much though, be very casual as pestering in itself can also cause a chain of events leading them to become a follower, and the blame in your own hands. As for there relationship with you, most children will grow slowly away from you, that in itself is normal. The thing you should look out for is if a child suddenly goes astray for you, and is younger than the pre-teen age. This can sometimes be because of the loner, mood killing stage that should apply to there relationship with others. The other thing to look for is if your child is past the pre-teen stage and is constantly trying to get your attention and love. Most teenagers like the distance that they create between there parents and them, if your child is constantly wanting more and more attention from you, so much so that its overbearing, please give them this attention, they are usually trying to test weather they are truly loved or not. As for certain behavior, if a child ever draws a purple hippo on anything, it is a sign it’s very important that you inform them never to repeat this action. It creates a very bad psychological problem in the brain making there pattern progress and leaving it so that not all steps will show.

What signs should you be aware of for an Adult? Pets… there is almost always a definite way of telling that this person is either a death eater or on there way to becoming one by the pets they have and the way the pets themselves act. Three main pets that are common among death eaters are rats, snakes, and dogs. These pets usually are well trained and end up having a purple glow on the edge of there eyes that only comes from being tortured by the cruciotous curse constantly. Most adults will stray away from there parents, and cease as much contact as possible. If this is occurring in your own family, continually send letters to the person in question, and remind them how much they mean to you as much as possible, as again most death eaters lack love that is very needed from there parents. Another way of telling if a person is on there way or already a death eater is to ask them to kill a spider. If they simply smash the spider, chances are they are just as happy and normal as any other witch or wizard, but if they pull out there wand… and torture the spider to death, that is usually a sign of becoming a death eater.

Why would your child ever want to become a Death Eater? What would make this happen? Again I bring up the most talked about thing in this pamphlet. Love. Many Death Eaters lack the love in there life that they needed, as a child, and as an adult. Love is the one thing that cuts off all evil. Also, there is some blame to be set, and the blame is usually in the hands of either other children you associate them with or in your own hands. As a parent, teaching your child about blood lineage and how it is important is only an obvious factor in making a child turn to the dark side. Children with the blame is quite another story. If a child is constantly harassed by its peers then the loneliness can sometimes result into anger and hatred, giving you the two common characteristics all death eaters have. The other problem, is that peer pressure does exist. If your child is constantly surrounded by peers that constantly tell him that He who must not be named, is the new found god, then they will learn unto them that its true. To much ambition can also be a sign of becoming a death eater, if ambition takes over so much that they are willing to hurt another witch or wizard to get were they want, then something is wrong.

As for the theory that all death eaters look the same, that is completely untrue. Two death eaters we know to truly evil: Peter Pettigrew and Bellatrix Lestrange look nothing at all alike. Pettigrew is a rat like wizard whose filthy ways and ugliness has always shown, but Bellatrix Lestrange was one of the most beautiful girls in her time at her school. A main symbol that death eaters end up using over and over again is, as I bring up again, a purple hippo. Most parents would think that the main symbol to look out for was the Dark Mark, but the purple hippo is a sign of loneliness and depression, most soon to be death eaters will draw it all over a certain notebook or diary to express themselves. If you see a child or adult doing this, it is important to immediately warn them to stop.

All of those things, add up to numerous patterns that make up a death eater, if your son or daughter shows up to three of these signs, please contact St. Mungos Hospital as they will need to take a few tests, and therapy will be able to be given.

The character I chose is Bellatrix Lestrange. I think she fits the traits I described in many ways. First of all, she grew up in a family with pureblood ideals, and dark artifacts. Her parents supporeted Voldemort, and she loved him, and all he stood for. Bellatrix, as we know, treats even her sister poorly, which shows she though of most people her minions. Bellatrix married a rich pureblood, one who certintally has never associated with muggleborns. Her sister was shunned for marryng a muggle-born, and she fully supporeted that. Bellatrix killed and tortured many people, and was sent to Azkban after the torture of Frank and Alice Longbottom. There, she spent years in a cell for Voldemort, and was drove allmost completly mad by the Dementors. Bellatrix has been branded with the dark mark, and her husband is too. They come at Voldemots every call, and live their lives ridding the world of the unworthy. Bellatrix is the true example of Voldemorts model Death Eater.

Part 1

For this part I want you to write an essay involving a number of aspects that identify the Death Eaters:

Many people claim that they can identify a Death Eater as soon as they see one because of their recognizable “characteristics”. Depending on how they act to certain people and also by how they look. Most people think of them as some heartless people that enjoy hurting and killing others. Some believe that they are born Death Eaters, meaning that since birth they can tell as to weather or not they will join the Dark Lord.

At a young age, some believe that those youngsters that in the future will become Death Eaters are mean and hateful when they are younger. They are what other kids will call the bullies and they will beat up or pick on kids that are younger or smaller than they are. Depending on weather or not their parents are Death Eaters too they would show they respect and show a liking in what they do for a living. If their parents don’t like the Death Eaters and are completely against what they do they might show a lack of respect and do what they were told not to do. When they are old enough and they start going to school they will pick out friends that they could use to their advantage or if their friendship would help they to gain something that they wouldn’t be able to do on their own.

As they become adults they will once again pick out those friends who will help them get to the top. If they have to they will destroy those whom they befriended just to get closer to the boss. They will do everything in their power to please those who are ahead of them so that they can be awarded. When the Dark Lord asks them to do something they will do it without even asking why they should do it or even what the purpose is for if the Dark Lord chooses not to tell them. When they are told to kill someone some of them enjoys it and will first “toy” with their victim before actually killing them. They will use all three of the unforgivable curses like the torturing curse, causing them as much pain as possible before they use the killing curse which kills them instantly.

The one thing that everyone thinks of when they think about Death Eaters is the mark they carry with them. As soon as the Dark Lord accepts them into his inner circle they are granted the privilege to bear the Dark Mark. The Dark Mark is used when a Death Eater has killed someone. They cast this mark into the air for all to see. Many are frighten to see this because once they do they know that someone has died.

Snape

At first glance many would think that Snape is a true Death Eater. He favors those who are in Slytherin, the house where the most Death Eaters come from, and also he has be mean to Harry who just so happened to bring down the Dark Lord when he was just a baby. Going by the essay I had just written Snape would prove just how right I was, that is if you haven’t really gotten to know him or his past. When he first came to Hogwarts everyone picked on him because he was that weird kid that loved the Dark Arts. People would also see him pouring over a book that was filled with horrible spells and potions. Also he had hanged out with those who wanted to join the Dark Lord and he and his friends called themselves Death Eaters. Then later in his life there was one thing that changed his mind and made him instead deiced to help Dumbledore instead of the Dark Lord.

After hearing the prophecy in the Hog’s Head he quickly dashed off to the Dark Lord and told him about what he had heard. The Dark Lord then decided that it was Harry Potter he must kill along with the women that Snape had loved- Lily Potter. Snape had pleaded him not to kill her but to let her live because he loved her but he dared not tell the Dark Lord this. Instead he met up with Dumbledore and asked him to watch over his son. Snape then accepted a job at Hogwarts where he acted like he hated Harry and couldn’t stand him, making Harry believe that Snape was in fact a Death Eater working for the Dark Lord more than one time.

Then at the end at the last battle Snape showed his true side but only to Harry. The Dark Lord had killed Snape believing that it would make him more powerful but before Snape passed away he gave Harry some memories to see. These memories proved that Snape was good all along ever since that day the Dark Lord killed his parents.

Yes I will admit that before the Dark Lord had killed Harry’s parents that he did fit most of my description of a Death Eater. He thought that he was better than others and he wanted to gain power. He acted so much like a Death Eater that many thought he was one but he had something that other Death Eaters didn’t have, a heart. He loved Lily Potter so much that once she was killed by the man he was serving he decided to risk his own life just so that Harry could continue on to live, something most Death Eaters would never do.
